Saturday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time - A Different Kind of Messiah

The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many people followed him, and he cured them all, but he warned them not to make him known. Matthew 12:14–16This passage goes on to say that Jesus withdrew to a more deserted place to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah the Prophet (Isaiah 42:1–4). That prophecy is the first of what is referred to as “The Songs of the Suffering Servant.” In these songs or poems of Isaiah, the Messiah is presented to us as one who would be sent on a mission from God, would suffer injustice for the sake of others, would be rejected, and ultimately be vindicated and exalted. The mission of the Suffering Servant was to bring justice and salvation to all, including to the gentiles. At that time, the idea of a messianic king was still prominent in the minds of many. They anticipated the coming of a messiah who would be a political leader and would lead the people of Israel out of oppression, making them a free, prosperous and powerful nation. But Jesus acts in the opposite manner. Instead of raising up an army to combat the evil intentions of the Pharisees and to overthrow the Romans, Jesus withdrew from them and invited people to come to Him for healing and to receive His teachings.Jesus perfectly fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah by becoming the Suffering Servant. And because His messianic role was much different than what many people had anticipated, Saint Matthew points us to the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah as a way of clearly showing that Jesus truly was the promised Messiah. He was just not the form of messiah that many expected. He was One Who was humble and gentle of heart. He was One Who would redeem people by the Blood of His Cross. And He was One Who would extend salvation to all people, not only the people of Israel. One lesson this teaches us is that even today we can have false expectations of God. It is easy for us to set forth our own idea of what God should do and what true justice demands. But we also read in Isaiah, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Is. 55:8–9).Just as it must have been difficult for the people of Israel to come to accept the promised Messiah as a servant Who suffers and Who redeems all people through that suffering, so it is often difficult for us to accept our Lord as He is. It is difficult to shed our own ideas of what we want God to do and this is especially difficult when He calls us to share in His own suffering and servanthood. To serve, suffer, sacrifice our lives, and the like can be difficult to accept. But this is the way of our Lord—it is the way of the Suffering Servant of God.Reflect, today, upon your own expectations of God. Do you have a long list of things that you think God should do? Do you pray for that list of your ideas, thinking that if you only ask enough, God will grant your requests? If your requests flow from His perfect will, then praying for them in faith will bring them about. But if they flow more from you and your own ideas of what God should do, then all the prayers in the world will not bring them to be. If this is your struggle, then try to start anew by turning your eyes to the Servant Who Suffers for the salvation of all. Reflect upon the fact that God's thoughts and ways are most often very far above your own thoughts and ways. Try to humble yourself before the Suffering Servant and abandon all ideas that do not flow from His Heart. My Suffering Servant, I thank You for Your suffering and death and for the redemption that flows from Your sacrifice of love. Help me to shed all false expectations that I have of You, dear Lord, so that I will be guided by You and Your mission of salvation alone. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

What is it that satisfies you in life? The answers to this question could be quite varied from person to person. One may find satisfaction in work, another in family activities, another in community service, another in wealth and worldly rewards. There are many and varied responses people will give. But the answer shouldn't be varied. There should be one answer for us all. And that answer is that you find true satisfaction in life by being with your Lord, resting in His Heart and being close to Him. This may make sense to most people in a theoretical way, but in a practical way it may not connect. What does it mean to be “resting in His Heart and being close to Him?” The only way to discover this real and practical meaning is to do it. All the books in the world will not teach you. You must discover His Heart, love His Heart, be alone in His presence, and only then will you discover what true satisfaction is all about (See Diary #1021).Do you understand, practically and experientially, the total satisfaction in life that comes from living close to the Heart of Christ? When you hear this does it make sense to you? Reflect upon this question today and if you realize that you do not know what it is to know Him this way, then admit that to yourself and begin to seek Him out. If you seek, with your whole heart, you will find. And when you find, you will be eternally grateful you did.Lord, I want to be one with You. I want to dwell in Your presence and bask in Your Divine Mercy. Help me in my weakness to turn to You with every power of my soul and to encounter Your Divine Essence. I reject all false “satisfactions” in life and turn to You and You alone. My Jesus, my Lord, I trust in You.Source of content: www.divinemercy.lifeCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. We who are familiar with the Gospels may suffer, at times, from a certain indifference to the sufferings of Christ. We hear the story read each year, have seen many images of the Passion, and as a result of this familiarity, we can fail to allow it to have the proper effect on our lives. But the Passion is real, it happened, and we should give it our full attention. Though it may not be pleasant, on one level, it is an act of love so mysterious that it requires much grace to enable us to penetrate its meaning and significance in our lives. Every scourge, ridicule, nail and thorn wounded not only our Lord's body, but it caused excruciating pain to His soul. But every pain that He endured He took into His Heart and redeemed it, offering it to the Father for the salvation of all. We must see this great mystery of our faith and gaze upon it in awe and holy wonder (See Diary #948).Have you gazed upon the suffering Jesus? Have you allowed yourself to see His pain and His suffering? Have you seen Him endure all in silence and acceptance? Reflect upon this incredible mystery of our faith this day and allow yourself to grow in love and compassion for Him who endured so much for you. Know that His suffering destroyed the effects of sin and transformed suffering itself into the instrument of His Divine Mercy.Precious Lord, I thank You for Your suffering. For in this act You took human suffering into Your glorious soul and redeemed it. You endured the effects of my sin and said not a word. Lord, You paid the price for my sins and You did so with perfect love and resolve. Give me the grace, dear Lord, to embrace all that I suffer and to unite it to the redeeming power of Your holy Cross. In that unity, free me from my sins and pour forth Your abundance of Mercy. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: www.divinemercy.lifeCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

This weekend we finish this June series on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We can only paint a few broad brushstrokes, but we have seen how this devotion, which places us before the mystery of the human and divine love of Jesus Christ for each one of us, is rooted in Sacred Scripture and in the prophecies of the Old Testament that reach their fullness in the Lord. Two weeks ago we considered the Heart of Jesus as the place of rest and origin of the virtues in which we too must participate. Last Sunday, we spoke of the Heart of Jesus as the source of the torrent of life that is the Holy Spirit. Today we conclude this triptych by going to the foot of the Cross and contemplating the pierced Heart of the Lord. Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may [come to] believe. For this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled: “Not a bone of it will be broken.” And again another passage says: “They will look upon him whom they have pierced.” (Jn 19:31-37). At this moment of the Passion, St. John pauses and places a special emphasis. A great mystery is being realized here: that fountain, which Christ announced last week, was closed until a spear threw it wide open on Calvary. We have already said that the Heart of Jesus is a symbol of love, and that in Jewish culture, the heart is a symbol of the interior life. In this last text of this weekend, however, St. John gives us a final element: the Heart of Jesus is a heart that we have pierced. It is a Heart that loves and is repaid with ingratitude. We pierce it when we are ungrateful to him, when we wound him. It is a wounded Heart! And we must look at this Heart with sorrow because it is wounded, and because I have wounded it. Reparation is one of the foundations of devotion to the Heart of Jesus, but sometimes, when we speak of reparation, it seems that we are referring to the sins of others. Reparation is to look at the Heart of Jesus with sorrow not only because it is a pierced heart, but because I have pierced it. Moreover, the wound of the Heart of Jesus is a wound that is always open, for in the glorified body of Christ, his Heart is still alive and wounded. We see this in the apparition to St. Thomas after the Resurrection: "Take your hand and thrust it into my side," says the Lord to his disciple (Jn 20:27). As Pope Benedict said back in 2007: “The Lord took his wounds with him to eternity. He is a wounded God; he let himself be injured through his love for us.” Because the Heart of Jesus is alive and open, it is sensitive today, now, to my response. I pierce him now with my ingratitude and my sins because he loves me now, because his Heart beats with love for me now. This is not the fruit of a very devout piety that is theologically inaccurate. No, we are at the very core of our faith! Devotion to the Heart of Jesus is based on the three central truths of our faith: the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, which makes us recognize Jesus as the Son of God; the mystery of the Incarnation, which makes us recognize in the Lord a man like us; and the mystery of the resurrection of Christ, which makes us understand that He is alive and that the love and sentiments of His Heart are as real now as they were two thousand years ago. When I look at Christ crucified, when I contemplate his open Heart, I look and contemplate the One whom I have pierced again and again with my sins. My life matters to Christ! He truly loves me! He loves me with a human heart like mine! Our sins are especially painful for the Lord because he has called us his friends (Jn 15:15), and the sins of a friend do particularly intense harm. It is necessary for me to see my sin in the Heart of Jesus, in order to find life and hope, forgiveness and mercy. Let us ask for the grace to weep for our sins, which perhaps are not as great as others that we see or hear about, but which make the Heart of Jesus suffer more because they come from those who are His friends and from whom He expected to find affection, love and fidelity. Only after weeping for my sins, will I be able to make reparation and weep for the sins of others, of those who do not weep for their faults. Here we will end our brief discussion of this mystery, which over these three weeks has led us to consider briefly three passages of the Holy Gospel. I encourage you all to enter into that open Heart in order to find there all the love of God, all the light of heaven, all life and redemption. May the Lord make our parish a community where the Heart of Jesus, alive in the Eucharist, is more and more welcomed, honored and loved. May Mary, who at the foot of the Cross collected the blood and water that flowed from that fountain, help us to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the remission of our sins, and the divine grace that comes from the Sacred Heart.

When you pray, and when you pray long and hard, the Lord will enter in. He will commune with you and unite His Heart to yours. You will experience these effects in various ways. One common effect is that the closer you are drawn into union with Christ, the more you will desire this union. And the more you desire this union, the more you will be drawn into union. Your prayer has a cyclical effect upon your union and your desire. This is good to be aware of so as to allow our Lord to use your desires to be drawn into greater holiness of life (See Diary #867).What do you desire the most in life? What is the treasure you seek? This is an important reflection to make in an honest and sincere way. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be” (Mt. 6:21). If the Lord is your greatest treasure in life, then your heart will be drawn to Him in a powerful way. You will desire intimacy with Him and that desire will draw you close. Reflect, honestly, upon what you desire and allow the insight you gain to reorder the priorities you have.Lord, please help me to make You the central Treasure of my life and to seek You and to desire You with all my heart. As I am drawn to You, increase my desire, and as You increase my desire, draw me closer. Lord, I pray that every aspect of my life may ultimately become consumed with a longing to serve You and Your holy Will. Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus - The Font of Mercy

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2021 6:19

But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. John 19:33–34John's Gospel is filled with deep spiritual imagery and symbolism. It is clear that this imagery and symbolism was divinely inspired so as to give us spiritual food for reflection and meditation. One such image is given to us today as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As Jesus and the two criminals on either side of Him hung upon their crosses, the soldiers came to hasten their deaths by breaking their legs to cause them to more quickly suffocate. But when they came to Jesus, He had already died. So one of the soldiers, traditionally known as Longinus, thrust his spear into Jesus' side, and blood and water flowed forth. Some traditions identify Longinus with the centurion who cried out after Jesus' death, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” (See Matthew 27:54.) Other traditions state that he converted at that moment, making him the first convert to Christianity. And still other traditions state that Longinus could not see well, and the blood and water from Jesus' side poured upon his eyes, healing him. Regardless of whether these traditions are true, we know that Jesus' side was pierced and blood and water flowed forth. The symbolism of this act was more than a mere human symbol. It was an instrument of the profound spiritual reality that was taking place at that moment. As Jesus' Sacred Heart was pierced, the blood and water that poured forth was the new sacramental life of the Church. The Blood was the Most Holy Eucharist and the Water was the gift of Baptism. And when Jesus had previously “breathed His last” and “handed over His Spirit,” the Sacrament of Confirmation was bestowed. When we celebrate those Sacraments today, it is easy to see them as mere symbols of what we partake in. But in our Christian Tradition, the Sacraments are so much more. The symbol is also the reality. It is the instrument of what it symbolizes. Therefore, every time we witness a Baptism or partake in the Holy Eucharist, we are mystically present with Longinus, receiving the grace and mercy of our redemption, pouring forth from Jesus' wounded side, so as to heal us and make us whole. The human heart is, physically speaking, a bodily organ responsible for pumping blood throughout. But from a spiritual perspective, given that we are both body and soul, the human heart is also the source of our life. Without it, we physically and spiritually die. So it is with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was not only a physical heart that was physically pierced by the lance long ago. It is now also the source of our ongoing spiritual life, and, without Jesus' Sacred Heart of Mercy, we will die in our sins.Reflect, today, upon the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. See His Heart as the ongoing source of your new life in grace. Understand that His Heart is more than a symbol of His grace and mercy, it is the spiritual source and the font of that mercy. Prayerfully place yourself before His Cross, this day, and allow the blood and water, flowing from His wounded side, to cover you so that you, too, may believe. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, You poured out upon the world the love and mercy of Your transforming grace through the instrument of the blood and water pouring forth from Your wounded side. Help me to gaze upon this font of mercy and to be covered with it through the gift of the Sacraments. May I always be open to all that You wish to bestow upon me by these precious and transforming instruments of Your love. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

The devil will tempt us in many ways. One common way the devil likes to attack us is to remind us of our sins, including those we have confessed. He loves to try to convince us that we are on the wrong path, that we are not pleasing to God, that we are liars and sinners. And while it’s true that we are sinners, the evil one always fails to see our sin through the lens of God’s Mercy. To overcome his deceptive temptations, while he reminds us of our sins, we need only to remind ourselves of the Mercy of the Heart of Jesus. As we gaze upon His Heart, we will have no fear about admitting our sin. This act of honesty will not produce anxiety, despair and doubt as the evil one desires. Instead, facing our sin in the light of the Mercy of God, will refresh us and lift our spirits, filling them with an abundance of hope (See Diary #520).Think about the ways that the evil one may tempt you to despair over your sins. To mourn for your sins is a good and healthy act, but never in despair. Christian mourning leads to the Mercy of God, and the contrition you feel in this holy act lifts your burden and fills you with joy.Precious Lord, free me from the deceit and attacks of the evil one. Keep me safe, oh God, and help me to never forget the abundance of Your Mercy. As I see that Mercy, help me to daily repent of my sin so as to rob from the evil one all weapons of his malice. The Mercy of the Heart of Jesus shines forth with great radiance. This was the image of Divine Mercy seen by Saint Faustina. The open Heart of our Lord burst forth with an outpouring of light and grace on the world. Jesus wants to continue to shine forth on the world, and He wants to rest in your heart so that He may shine on others through you (See Diary #514).What is in your heart? Is it bitterness and pain? Is it sin and darkness? Or is it the Heart of our Lord? Does Jesus live in your heart? These questions are so very important to answer honestly. If you cannot honestly say that the Heart of Jesus rests in your heart, then this is an important revelation to ponder. Seek to let His Heart melt away any sin and dispel any darkness. In their place, let His light shine forth. When the Heart of Jesus rests in yours, your heart will radiate Mercy and bathe others in its rays.Lord, as I look at my heart, I see sin and darkness at times. Calm Dignity Amidst Great Adversity Lourdes Pinto, 4/15/21 Calm Dignity, Message of 3/16/21 The time is quickly approaching in which you will be judged as My followers. Do not be afraid, My little one, for I have walked this path before you. You too will approach your persecutors with “calm dignity.” The time draws near for the great sifting of mankind. All will have to choose to believe and follow Me or forsake Me and walk away. The few that remain faithful to their God and Savior will usher in the Eucharistic Reign of My Kingdom, but before this takes place, much blood will be shed. My little one, prepare My mustard seed for the great shake-up so that my remnant of followers can give Me testimony through their calm dignity amidst great adversity. Know that I am with you, guiding you and filling you with My life. Continue to persevere as My prophet of these end times… A Reflection on Jesus' Calm Dignity: The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Anne Catherine Emmerich "He (Jesus) would have been perfectly unrecognizable even to her (Mary's) maternal eyes, stripped as He was of all save a torn remnant of His garment, had she not instantly marked the contrast between His behavior and that of his vile tormentors. He alone in the midst of persecution and suffering looked calm and resigned, and far from returning blow for blow, never raised His hands but in acts of supplication to His Eternal Father for the pardon of his enemies." (p.187) "The brutal guards dragged our Lord up the marble staircase and led Him to the end of the terrace, from whence Pilate was conferring with the Jewish priests. The Roman governor had often heard of Jesus, although he had never seen Him, and now he was perfectly astonished at the calm dignity of deportment of a man brought before him in so pitiable a condition." (p.194) Jesus is entirely abandoned in His Father. He lives consumed in the Father's love—receiving His love fully and fully returning love to the Father. This divine embrace is the Holy Spirit, the fire of consuming love, the zeal of Jesus' Heart. He knows the Father's love and His perfect plan of Salvation.  Jesus knows who He is as the Father's Son. He also knows His purpose as the Son of Man: to fulfill the Father's will through His death and resurrection. In this act of love, He glorifies the Father by making Him known to us so that we be saved.  This consuming love is His driving force to complete His mission. His consuming desire is to draw each of us to Himself when He is lifted up on the Cross so that we can become a new creation. This fills Him with calm dignity.  His calm dignity is expressed in His silence, a silence that holds within an intense and consuming love, a silence that is an expression of His agonizing prayer of intercession for us before the Father. His silence is His perfect Fiat to His Father and complete commitment to our Salvation.  Through His silence, in His calm dignity, we can see and enter His gaze. It's as if, His silence and calm dignity force humanity to enter His gaze, which draws us into His Heart, to be touched by Mercy.  Jesus' calm dignity during His passion reveals to humanity how He lives the commandment He gave His apostles during the Last Supper. "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (Jn 13:34-35) This new commandment to love is placed in John's Gospel between Judas' foretold betrayal and Peter's denial. Jesus is teaching us, His disciples, that we must choose love as He did, in our most extreme pain, betrayal, and abandonment.  The love of God will stretch your love beyond your physical capacities. The expansion of the tent of your hearts is a most painful process. You

Each night, as you go to sleep, you are invited to sleep in the grace and Mercy of our Lord. You are invited to rest in His arms so as to be rejuvenated and refreshed. Sleep is an image of prayer and, in fact, can become a form of prayer. To rest is to rest in God. Every beat of your heart must become a prayer to God and every beat of His Heart must become the rhythm of your rest (See Diary #486).Do you sleep in the presence of God? Think about it. When you retire to bed, do you pray? Do you ask our Lord to surround you with His grace and to embrace you with His gentle arms? God has spoken to the saints of old through their dreams. He has put holy men and women into a deep rest so as to restore them and strengthen them. Try to invite our Lord into your mind and heart as you lay your head down to sleep, this night. And as you wake, let Him be the first one whom you greet. Allow each night’s rest to be a resting in His Divine Mercy.Lord, I thank You for the rhythm of each day. I thank You for the ways You walk with me throughout my day and I thank You for being with me while I rest. I offer to You, this night, my rest and my dreams. I invite You to hold me close to You, that Your Heart of Mercy may be the gentle sound which soothes my weary soul. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: www.divinemercy.lifeCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

We take a moment to plug our previous magical girl episodes, including our HeartCatch PreCure episode, Our Madoka Magica episode, and our spectacular crossover with Trey of The Full Spectrum Podcast as we all covered the PreCure Miracle Universe movie. Honestly we're quite proud of ourselves and are happy to continue covering more Magical Girl media. The Discussion Question is posed at 4:22, "what aspects of Easter appeal to each of the Tropical Club members?" You just know Manatsu is going to be sprinting around looking for eggs. The main episode starts at 12:02, in which we discuss Asuka and Laura at length, Manatsu's efforts to get her club officially accepted, and a search for the penguin statue from last episode! We also talk about My Little Pony quite a bit more than in previous episodes. Also, is Tropical Rouge PreCure "On Acid?" Or shall we have to rebuke whoever had levied such foul accusations? Plus, Joel makes a promise from His Heart to Yours to watch more Kira Kira before episode 8 of the podcast- will he succeed? We share our Crack Theories at 38:08 to end the episode. We shall not spoil them, of course, but we are always excited to hear your silly ideas

Where do love and sin meet? They meet in the persecution, ridicule and malice inflicted upon our Lord. He was the Incarnation of perfect love. The Mercy in His Heart was infinite. His care and concern for all people was beyond imagination. And yet the soldiers mocked Him, laughed at Him and tortured Him for entertainment and fun. He, in turn, loved them with a perfect love. This is a true meeting of love and sin (See Diary #408).Have you encountered the sins of others? Have you been treated with spite, harshness and malice? If so, there is an important question to ponder. What was your response? Did you return insult for insult and injury for injury? Or did you allow yourself to be like our Divine Lord and face sin with love? Returning love for malice is one of the most profound ways we imitate the Savior of the World.Lord, when I am persecuted and treated with sin, I find myself hurt and angry. Free me from these tendencies so that I may imitate Your perfect love. Help me to face all sin I encounter with the love overflowing from Your Divine Heart. Help me to forgive and so be Your presence to those who are guilty of much sin. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: www.divinemercy.lifeCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. Homily from the Third Sunday of Lent.Is the question, “Can I trust God?” Or is the better question, “Can God trust me?"There is something that all of us discover about ourselves the moment we have a minute of self-reflection: we have the capacity to do the things we hate. In spite of our best efforts and sincere desires to be consistently good, we have this thing in our chests that ought not to be trusted. We have treacherous hearts. And yet, Jesus entrusts His Heart to ours at every Mass. When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6:34What is compassion? It’s an attribute by which someone sees the suffering of another and experiences true empathy for them. This empathy, in turn, leads the person to reach out and share in the person’s suffering, helping them to endure whatever they are going through. This is what Jesus experienced within His own Sacred Heart as He looked out upon this vast crowd. The Scripture above introduces the familiar miracle of the feeding of the five thousand with only five loaves of bread and two fish. And though the miracle itself offers much to ponder, this introductory line also gives us much to ponder regarding our Lord’s motivation for performing this miracle. When Jesus looked out at the large crowd, He saw a group of people who seemed lost, were searching and were spiritually hungry. They desired some direction in their lives, and, for that reason, they were coming to Jesus. But what’s very helpful to reflect upon is Jesus’ Heart. He was not annoyed by their insistence, He was not burdened by them; rather He was deeply moved by their spiritual poverty and hunger. This moved His Heart to “pity,” which is a form of sincere compassion. For that reason, He taught them “many things.”Interestingly, the miracle was simply an extra blessing but was not the primary action Jesus took on account of His compassionate Heart. First and foremost, His compassion led Him to teach them.Jesus looks at each one of us with the same compassion. Whenever you find yourself confused, lacking direction in life and spiritually hungry, Jesus gazes at you with the same gaze He offered this vast crowd. And His remedy for your needs is to teach you, also. He wants you to learn from Him by studying the Scripture, by daily prayer and meditation, by reading the lives of the saints and learning the many glorious teachings of our Church. This is the food that every wandering heart needs for spiritual satisfaction.Reflect, today, upon the most compassionate Heart of our Divine Lord. Allow yourself to see Him gazing at you with the utmost love. Know that His gaze is one that drives Him to speak to you, to teach you and to lead you to Himself. Trust this most compassionate Heart of our Lord and allow Him to reach out to you in love.Lord, help me to see You as You gaze at me with the most heartfelt love and compassion. I know You know my every struggle and my every need. Help me to open myself up to You and Your mercy so that You become my true Shepherd. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS fee

Intro: Welcome to the podcast Coronavirus Crisis: Carpe Diem!, where by God's grace, you and I rise up and embrace the possibilities and opportunities for spiritual and psychological growth right now, in these days, all grounded in a Catholic worldview.   We are going beyond mere resilience, to rising up to the challenges in our lives and becoming even healthier in the natural and the spiritual realms.  I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski and I am here with you, to be your host and guide.  This podcast is part of Souls and Hearts, our online outreach at soulsandhearts.com, which is all about shoring up our natural foundation for the Catholic spiritual life, all about overcoming psychological obstacles to being loved and to loving God and neighbor -- it short, this podcast is all about relationships -- it's all about becoming much more relational in our lives and in our faith.   This is episode 45, released on December 7, 2020 Thank you for being here with me.   and it is the ninth episode in our series on shame.   and it is titled: How Shame Leads Us to Idolatry We are now Diving into the spiritual dimension of shame. This podcast is all about transformation -- fundamental transformation of all of us -- all parts of us.  Even the parts we keep secret, hidden.   This podcast is all about removing psychological obstacles to following the two great commandments Not entertainment.  Not about having a good time, just enjoying a entertaining podcast, funny and distracting. No this podcast is about developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit, a personal relationship with God our spiritual Father, and a personal relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary, our spiritual Mother Any psychological obstacles you have to relating with others, you will have in relating to God.   You will bring those relational inhibitions, those relational problems into your spiritual life because they are formed into you and they have not been healed through experiencing throughout your whole being who God really is.    Spiritual realm is not some special place where the relational limitations you have are just dispensed, you're no longer trouble with them.  No, you are still you in the spiritual realm.   Any psychological issues you have with your earthly father and mother you will bring into your relationship with God as Father and Mary as Mother.  Child psychologist -- transferences Two major assumptions in the natural realm for why we don't have a personal relationship with a loving God. Assumption 1.  We do not believe that we are worthy to be in relationship with God -- driven by shame   Assumption 2.  We do not believe that God is worthy to be in relationship with us -- driven by negative God images -- see episodes 23-29 Idolatry.  We are not worshiping God as He is.  And here is the more tragic part:  We stay with those assumptions, even though they are so manifestly problematic and harmful.  We don't seek, we assume that assumptions one and two are true.   Her is the great offer I am making to you.  I am inviting you on an adventure, an adventure to discover who you really are, an adventure to discover who God really is, and adventure in learning to relate and to connect with our God, our God who is personal, who is relational, who is loving, who is Love Himself.   If you really knew who God was and you really knew who you are, and you really knew how God truly saw you -- you would always run to His loving arms.  You really would.   But you don't know these realities at a deep, integrated level.  We know them to some degree in our heads, in a theological way, in an abstract way, we can quote the Catechism.  But not in our hearts, our souls, and our bones.   In fact, at a gut level, at an intuitive level  the vast majority of us have varying degrees of certainty or confidence in very warped assumptions about ourselves and assumptions about God.  These assumptions are wildly different from what God reveals to us about who he is and who we are through Scripture, through Tradition, and through the perennial teachings of our Catholic Church.  In our hearts, in our bodies, in the depths of our souls, in our unconscious, We believe in lies.  This is so common.  And it's deadly and so much of it is driven by shame.   Review of Shame  Definition of Shame Explored this in a lot of detail in Episode 37, the first in our series on shame.  Shame is:  The primary problem we have in the natural realm -- foundational problem.  Grace perfects nature, if our natural foundation is infused with shame, it makes the foundation for our spiritual life shaky, unreliable, uncertain.   That gives birth to so many secondary problems -- we tend to focus on the secondary problems, the problems that are further downstream -- so we are not getting to the root.   Shame is:  a primary emotion, a bodily reaction, a signal,  a judgement, and an action. (Click to episode 38 for a summary)   Qualities of shame Shame is hidden.  Hidden from others, hidden from God, often hidden from the therapist, hidden from self.     Shame inhibits positive emotions   Strategies for coping with shame   Chronic shame needs to be attenuated, reduced, titrated, ordered, regulated.  Chronic shame develops when a little boy or little girl has a sense of being rejected, unwanted, a burden.   When the child changes behaviors, does what he can to be better in the eyes of the adult and still is rejected, he can conclude that he just is a bad kid.   The difficulty is in the response of the others -- the caregivers.   But the child bears the burden of shame caused by the shaming of the caregivers.   Child sees parts of himself that are unacknowledged and unacceptable Ostracized or invaded.   And we assume that God responds to us like our shaming caregivers -- soulset.  We generalize from our experiences of shame and assume that God is like those caregivers.  This is called a transference.  Transference is a phenomenon within psychotherapy in which the feelings a person has about their parents, as one example, are unconsciously redirected or transferred onto the therapist. It usually concerns feelings from a primary relationship during childhood. Ubiquity of Shame.   Shame as the silent killer -- Episode 37 Shame can lead to spiritual death.  Shame is the Silent Killer who Stalks you from inside  (episode 37) and despair is the murder weapon.  Spiritual view on this Primary struggle is against powers and principalities.  Satan's goals -- personal relationship with you.  Satan is real, folks.  Big effort in certain very mainstream Christian circles to undermine belief in Satan.   Satan loves this.  Very helpful and useful for him.   He wants to work unobserved. IFS recognizes malevolent spiritual forces -- has a name for them -- unattached burdens.   Blindness -- keeping us in the dark Despair, giving up   Nathanson (1992, 1997)  Four defensive scripts for avoiding shame:  attacking self, attacking others, isolating from others, avoiding inner experiences.   Attack self  -- I am unworthy.  I am bad, I am nothing.   Attacking others first -- preemptive.  Sarcasm, cutting humor, Condemning others.   This can include God.  Via poor God images.    All distorted God images are attacks on God that allow us to justify cutting off the relationship or distancing ourselves from Him.  Episodes 23-29  God images of parts -- modes of operating   Isolate from others -- Isolating from God.  Cutting ourselves off from relationship So we won't be seen  So the shame won't be known, brought to light, increased  Genesis 3.  What does God do?  Shame can drive flight from God.   Avoiding God Not praying -- not entering into relational prayer.  Mechanical vocal prayer.  Prayer before meals.   Not going to confession -- big one.   Fantasy that we will, by our own power, somehow redeem ourselves, make ourselves acceptable to God.   Pelagianism Or somehow just waiting will change something.   Or just not thinking about the future -- not looking where this road will lead.  Shortsighted vision.  Some parts when they are in control do not look very far ahead.   Avoid inner experiences  We are so afraid of ourselves -- parts afraid of parts. Makes sense.  We can't resolve the situation by ourselves.   Controlling-caregiving -- viewing others as more deserving, as more in needs   Denying my own needs by extending myself to serve others but it's not out of charity -- it's a defense, a way of running away from my own shame  keeping just ahead of my shame shadow.     Despair is the murder weapon, despair is the knife.   Unforgiveable sin -- blaspheming against the Holy Spirit Satan uses our shame.   Work with the parts of us burdened with shame that are abandoned, exiled within us.     Wants us to be low-maintenance, caught in prisons that we maintain.  Parts of us like prison guards keeping shame at bay.   Thomas A Kempis, Imitation of Christ Choosing our own spiritual reading -- problem   Wretched worm spiritual literature Helpful for some -- parts with strong narcissistic defenses.   Shame and Pride Antidote to Shame is Love:  There is one thing that disarms shame.  One thing.  And that one thing is Love.  Real authentic Love.  Charity.   Love rescues us from shame.  It transforms us, makes us immune to the shame who no longer has power over us.  Love heals us from shame.  Not our own efforts.  So let's talk about love. God's message I want a relationship with you, right now, as you are, with all parts of you, all of you, including all that you consider undesirable in you.  I can heal all of it.  But not without your permission.   Nothing too dark, too shameful for God to accept in you and to heal   Healthy ways to deal with Shame Childlike trust in God -- Absolute confidence in God, especially in God's love for us as a good Father for a little child.  Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God is made up of such as these.   Childlike trust in God -- Need to be small, like a little child, like a parvulus -- see episode 30 -- How small are we supposed to be, really? Recommend book:  The complete spiritual doctrine of St. Therese of Lisieux.  Fr. François Jamart, OCD.  Society of St. Paul, 1961.   St. Therese of Lisieux: "In order to belong to Jesus we must be little, but there are few souls who aspire to remain in that littleness."   St. Therese of Lisieux: "My peace consists in remaining small; hence, when I fall on the road I can quickly rise again and Jesus takes me by the hand."   We want to be big -- because we believe at a gut level that is safer -- we want to solve our problems by ourselves, we want to make ourselves presentable, overcome our sins, faults, failings, by our own efforts, we want to take over the role of God for ourselves, we want to be God for ourselves, we try to redeem ourselves.  And that doesn't work.   Proverbs 3:5 --  Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on our own insight.  RSVCE2 Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not upon thy own prudence.  Douay Rheims.   Nothing pleases God more than for us to trust in him like a child, like an infant or toddler in a good father, knowing by faith first that he will provide for all our needs.  That honors Him more than anything else.  More than any penance, any mortification, any sacrifice, anything else we could give him.   St. Therese of Lisieux: "In order to remain a little child, we must expect everything from our good Lord, as a child expects everything from his father, without worrying about anything.   St. Therese of Lisieux: "The thing that pleases Jesus when He beholds my soul is that I love my littleness and my poverty and I have a blind hope in His mercy. We won't feel it at first -- this is based on faith and hope.   We want to trust in us.  That won't work. Not trusting ourselves -- giving up the unwarranted confidence we have in our own vision.   Humility in addition to the childlike trust and absolute confident in God. St. Therese of Lisieux:  "If I am humble, I am entitled, without offending the good Lord, to do small, foolish thing until I die.  Look at little children.  They constantly break things, tear them up, fall, and all the while, in spite of that, they love their parents very much.  Well, when I fall in this way, like a child, it makes me realize my nothingness and my weakness all the better and I say to myself: 'What would become of me?  What would I be able to accomplish if I were to rely on my own powers alone?'"  St. Therese of Lisieux: "Sanctity does not consist in this or that practice.  It consists In a disposition of the heart which makes us humble and little in God's arms, conscious of our weakness and confident even unto audacity in the goodness of the Father."     Repentance: Shifting our vision from our sins, faults, weaknesses, failings, limitations, our shame -- to God's goodness and his love for us.  Trusting in it before we feel it.  Scene in the 1989 film Indiana Jones the Last Crusade -- the leap of faith.  Villain says to Indiana Jones:  It's time to ask yourself what you believe.  The narrow bridge appears only after Indiana Jones steps into the chasm.   St. Therese of Lisieux:  "It is only when His children ignore their constant lapses and make of habit of them and fail to ask His pardon that Christ grieves over them; but He is full of joy at the sight of those who love Him and after each fault ask His pardon and cast themselves in His arms.   St. Therese of Lisieux: "…I have learned that the way to Jesus is through His Heart.  Consider a small child who has vexed his mother by a display of bad temper or disobedience.  If the child hides in a corner through fear of punishment, he feels that his mother will not forgive him.  But if instead he extends his little arms toward her and with a smile cries out 'Love, kiss me mamma,  I will not do it again,' will not his mother press the little one to her heart with tenderness, and forget what the child has done?  And yet, though she knows very well that her dear little one will misbehave again at the first opportunity, that means nothing if the child appeals to her heart.  He will never be punished…"   Abandonment to God's mercy.   Exercise -- parts of you.   Wrap Can start by sharing these podcast -- spotify, apple podcasts, google play, amazon.  Share it on social media -- buttons are on our website at soulsandhearts.com/coronavirus-crisis  -- get your word out there, with your personal recommendation -- how these episodes have helped you.  Share them, let others know  Get on the waiting list  soulsandhearts.com/rccd  You can reach out to me at 317.567.9594 or at crisis@soulsandhearts.com  This Wednesday, second Wed.  December 9, 2020 at 7:30 -8:30 PM EST.   dicussion shame and the spiritual life.   Patronness and Patron.

(Rv.14:14-19;   Ps.96:10-13;   Lk.21:5-11)   “Use your sickle and cut down the harvest, for now is the time to reap.”   Brothers and sisters, you will “hear of wars and insurrections,” and “there will be great earthquakes, plagues, and famines in various places, and in the sky fearful omens and great signs.”  “These things are bound to happen first, but the end does not follow immediately.”  The end does not follow immediately from the signs, so do not set your hearts upon them – “take care not to be misled” by those whose seed has no root and so jumps up at any indication of travail.  There has been travail throughout human history and the end, which is upon us every moment now, will only be fulfilled at the angels' cry.  When this will be, be assured you do not know. In John's vision, at the first angel's cry “the one sitting on the cloud wielded his sickle over all the earth and reaped the earth's harvest.”  At a second angel's cry another “wielded his sickle over the earth and gathered the grapes of the earth… [and] threw them into the huge winepress of God's wrath.”  And so the end comes.  But does John see the future only, the past or the present as well… or a time that exists quite apart from our own?  And even the angels did not know the time had come until they obediently acted upon the word of their God.  And would you yet listen to the anxious rantings of those without eyes, those whose vision does not approach the heavenly reality? The Lord “shall rule the world with justice and the peoples with His constancy” when “He comes to rule the earth.”  This you can know even now; of this you can be assured.  But when “the heavens [shall] be glad and the earth rejoice… [and] the sea and what fills it resound,” none can say – this word is in His mouth alone, and when the Mighty One shall pronounce it is known to His Heart alone.  He has spoken once at the coming of Christ, but when He shall speak finally cannot be ascertained; it is but for us to be prepared for that Day.  For He will come again, we know, and the angels' sickles shall be sharp, and separate with certainty the wheat from the chaff.  The time of harvest is at hand. (In the harvest of the wheat and the grapes of the earth at the end of the age is made perfect this Body and Blood of Christ we eat and drink from our altar today.  The saints' flesh and blood become the Lord's own.)   ******* O LORD, when harvest time comes,   let us not be fearful but rejoice   in the return of your Son. YHWH, you rule the world with justice and in the end your justice will be known.  There will not be left a stone on another as you reap the harvest you have sown and cast the unrighteous into the winepress of your wrath. Those who love you, LORD, shall rejoice at your coming, at the return of your only Son and all His angels with Him.  They shall rejoice that the end has come and your justice will be fully known.  And you shall gather them into your barns.  But those who are not your own, LORD, will not be able to endure that day, for they will be anxious and afraid at the glory that comes to rule the earth.  Turn all hearts from the empty illusion of this passing world and set them on your kingdom which passes not away but is fulfilled in the judgment of your Son on the Day of His return.  Let us not fear the violence coming upon the land but look to the peace that follows.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. Matthew 11:29 (Year A Gospel)Happy Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus! To some, this can seem like an old and outdated celebration in the Church.  It can be seen as one of those ancient feasts that have little meaning in our lives today.  Nothing could be further from the truth! The Sacred Heart of Jesus is exactly what we need to know, experience and receive in our lives today.  His heart, that heart which was pierced by the lance and from which flowed blood and water, is the sign, symbol and source of the burning love of His very soul.  The blood is an image of the Most Holy Eucharist and the water is an image of the cleansing waters of Baptism.  This celebration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a celebration of Jesus pouring out on us His whole life and all of His love.  He held nothing back which is symbolized by the pouring forth of the last drop of this blood and water from His Heart as He lay there dead on the Cross.  Though it’s a very graphic image, it’s graphic to make a point.  The point, again, is that He held nothing back.  We need to realize that Jesus continues to give us everything if we are willing to receive it.  If you are finding that you need to know His love more deeply in your life this day, try spending time reflecting on this Scripture: “...but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out” (John 19:33-34).  Spend time reflecting upon that last self gift, the gift of that water and blood flowing from His wounded Heart.  It is a sign of His infinite love for you.  Reflect upon it being poured out especially for you.  See it, be immersed in it, and be open to it.  Let His love transform and fill you.  Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.  I thank You, dear Lord, for giving all to me.  You held nothing back from me and You continue to pour out Your life for my good and for the good of the whole world.  May I receive all You give to me and hold nothing back from You.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary of Divine Mercy #699)This message, spoken by Jesus to Saint Faustina in 1931, has now come true.  What was spoken in the solitude of a cloistered convent in Płock Poland, now is celebrated by the Universal Church throughout the whole world!Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament was known to very few people during her lifetime.  But through her, God has spoken the message of His abundant mercy to the entire Church and world. What is this message?  Though its content is endless and unfathomable, here are five key ways that Jesus desires this new devotion to be lived:The first way is through meditation on the sacred image of The Divine Mercy.  Saint Faustina was asked by Jesus to have an image of His merciful love painted for all to see. It’s an image of Jesus with two rays shining forth from His Heart. The first ray is blue, indicating the font of Mercy coming forth through Baptism; and the second ray is red, indicating the font of Mercy poured forth through the Blood of the Holy Eucharist. The second way is through the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday.  Jesus told Saint Faustina that He desired an annual solemn Feast of Mercy. This Solemnity of Divine Mercy was established as a universal celebration on the Eighth day of the Octave of Easter. On that day the floodgates of Mercy are opened and many souls are made holy. The third way is through the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.  The chaplet is a treasured gift. It’s a gift that we should seek to pray each and every day.The fourth way is by honoring the hour of Jesus’ death every day. “  It was at 3 o’clock that Jesus took His last breath and died upon the Cross. It was Friday. For this reason, Friday should always be seen as a special day to honor His Passion and ultimate Sacrifice. But since it took place at 3 o’clock, it is also important to honor that hour each and every day. This is the ideal time to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. If the Chaplet is not possible, it’s at least important to pause and give thanks to our Lord every day at that time. The fifth way is through the Apostolic Movement of The Divine Mercy.  This movement is a call from our Lord to actively engage in the work of spreading His Divine Mercy.  This is done by spreading the message and by living Mercy toward others. On this, the Eighth Day of the Octave of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday, ponder the above desires of the heart of Jesus.  Do you believe that the message of Divine Mercy is meant not only for you but also for the whole world? Do you seek to understand and incorporate this message and devotion into your life?  Do you seek to become an instrument of mercy to others? Become a disciple of The Divine Mercy and seek to spread this Mercy in the ways given to you by God.My merciful Lord, I trust in You and in Your abundant Mercy!  Help me, this day, to deepen my devotion to Your merciful heart and to open my soul to the treasures that pour forth from this font of Heavenly riches.  May I trust You, Love You and become an instrument of You and Your Mercy to the whole world. Jesus, I trust in You!Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Tuesday of Holy Week - Painful Betrayal

Reclining at table with his disciples, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, “Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”  John 13:21It’s very important to note here that Jesus was “deeply troubled.”  This shows His humanity.  Jesus had a human heart and loved Judas with a divine love through His human heart.  As a result of this perfect love of Judas, Jesus’ heart was deeply troubled.  It was “troubled” in the sense that Jesus could do nothing more than He had already done to change the mind and heart of Judas.  It’s not that Jesus was personally offended or angered by Judas’ betrayal.  Rather, it’s that Jesus’ heart burned with a deep sorrow at the loss of Judas whom He loved with a perfect love.  Judas had free will.  Without free will Judas could not freely love Jesus.  But with free will, Judas chose to betray Jesus.  The same is true with us.  We have free will and we are given the same ability that Judas had to accept the love of Jesus or to reject it.  We can let His loving gift of salvation and grace enter our lives or refuse it.  It’s 100% up to us.Holy Week is an ideal time to seriously contemplate the road you are on.  Each and every day of your life you are invited by God to choose Him with all your might and love.  But, like Judas, we so often betray Him by our refusal to enter Holy Week with Jesus, embracing His Cross as ours.  We so often fail to give completely of our lives in a sacrificial and generous way, as our Lord did that Holy Week.  Reflect, today, upon the love Jesus had for Judas.  It was His love for Judas, more than Judas’ sin, that brought so much pain to Jesus’ Heart.  If Jesus didn’t love him, the rejection would not have hurt.  Reflect, also, on the love Jesus has for you.  Ponder whether or not His Heart is also troubled as a result of the actions in your life.  Be honest and do not make excuses.  If Jesus is troubled in any way as a result of your actions and choices this is no reason to despair as Judas did.  Rather, it should be the cause of rejoicing that you are aware of your weakness, sin and limitation.  Turn that over to Jesus who loves you more than you love yourself.  Doing this will bring your heart much consolation and peace.  And it will also bring much consolation and peace to the Heart of our Divine Lord.  He loves you and is waiting for you to come to Him this Holy Week.My dear suffering and rejected Lord, I do love You but I also know that I cause Your Heart to be troubled by my betrayal.  Help me to see my sin honestly this Holy Week.  In seeing it, may I let go of that which keeps me from loving You more deeply, so as to walk with You to the Cross to share in Your glorious triumph.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Homily from Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion.Let that “one more” be you.One of the primary difficulties for us as Christians is to truly understand our role in the story of Christ’s Passion. Our role is difficult to face. Our role is that “I am responsible for the death of Christ”. But Merciful Love reveals another role we can exercise: we can console Jesus in His agony, suffering, and death. How? We console Jesus by allowing Him to extend the mercy He won for us to us. By trusting Jesus in our weakness…by bringing our sin and our broken hearts to Jesus in Confession, we are giving Him the victory that He gave everything to accomplish. By letting Jesus forgive us in Confession, we are consoling His Heart by not allowing His sacrifice to go to waste on us.Mass Readings from April 09, 2017:Isaiah 50:4-7Psalm 22:8-9, 17-20, 23-24Phillipians 2:6-11Matthew 26:14—27:66TO ORDER THE BOOK MENTIONED AFTER THE HOMILY FOR THE LENTEN SERIES, TAP ON THIS LINK OR PASTE IT IN YOUR BROWSER:http://a.co/7MYwxrDTO DOWNLOAD THE BIBLE STUDY TAP ON THIS LINK OR COPY THE FOLLOWING LINK IN YOUR INTERNET BROWSER (Chrome, Firefox, Safari):http://bulldogcatholic.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Wholehearted-You-Win.pdf
