The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many people followed him, and he cured them all, but he warned them not to make him known. Matthew 12:14–16This passage goes on to say that Jesus withdrew to a more deserted place to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah the Prophet (Isaiah 42:1–4). That prophecy is the first of what is referred to as “The Songs of the Suffering Servant.” In these songs or poems of Isaiah, the Messiah is presented to us as one who would be sent on a mission from God, would suffer injustice for the sake of others, would be rejected, and ultimately be vindicated and exalted. The mission of the Suffering Servant was to bring justice and salvation to all, including to the gentiles.At that time, the idea of a messianic king was still prominent in the minds of many. They anticipated the coming of a messiah who would be a political leader and would lead the people of Israel out of oppression, making them a free, prosperous and powerful nation. But Jesus acts in the opposite manner. Instead of raising up an army to combat the evil intentions of the Pharisees and to overthrow the Romans, Jesus withdrew from them and invited people to come to Him for healing and to receive His teachings.Jesus perfectly fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah by becoming the Suffering Servant. And because His messianic role was much different than what many people had anticipated, Saint Matthew points us to the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah as a way of clearly showing that Jesus truly was the promised Messiah. He was just not the form of messiah that many expected. He was One Who was humble and gentle of heart. He was One Who would redeem people by the Blood of His Cross. And He was One Who would extend salvation to all people, not only the people of Israel.One lesson this teaches us is that even today we can have false expectations of God. It is easy for us to set forth our own idea of what God should do and what true justice demands. But we also read in Isaiah, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Is. 55:8–9).Just as it must have been difficult for the people of Israel to come to accept the promised Messiah as a servant Who suffers and Who redeems all people through that suffering, so it is often difficult for us to accept our Lord as He is. It is difficult to shed our own ideas of what we want God to do and this is especially difficult when He calls us to share in His own suffering and servanthood. To serve, suffer, sacrifice our lives, and the like can be difficult to accept. But this is the way of our Lord—it is the way of the Suffering Servant of God.Reflect, today, upon your own expectations of God. Do you have a long list of things that you think God should do? Do you pray for that list of your ideas, thinking that if you only ask enough, God will grant your requests? If your requests flow from His perfect will, then praying for them in faith will bring them about. But if they flow more from you and your own ideas of what God should do, then all the prayers in the world will not bring them to be. If this is your struggle, then try to start anew by turning your eyes to the Servant Who Suffers for the salvation of all. Reflect upon the fact that God's thoughts and ways are most often very far above your own thoughts and ways. Try to humble yourself before the Suffering Servant and abandon all ideas that do not flow from His Heart.My Suffering Servant, I thank You for Your suffering and death and for the redemption that flows from Your sacrifice of love. Help me to shed all false expectations that I have of You, dear Lord, so that I will be guided by You and Your mission of salvation alone. And the reason I wanted to have you back tonight is because it feels like conspiracy theorists are just getting more and more prevalent, or at least more and more people seem to be falling victim to conspiracy theories. And I saw somebody I pulled up to Walgreens the other day in my little town that I live in this, you know, cute, quaint little South Jersey town, and somebody had a Qanon bumper sticker. So I’m walking around Walgreens like, well, who’s the crazy person in here? And it’s just so weird. People used to hide the fact that they were like crazy conspiracy theorists and Christian Perez 1:31Now they put it on their bumpers. Heather Warburton 1:32Right? Am I wrong in thinking that it’s more prevalent now? Christian Perez 1:36No, I mean, I would say it’s definitely more prevalent. conspiracy theories have always been around, you know, since the beginning of time since the beginning of modern history. You know, you can go back to the Middle Ages. But I think now, with the rise of the Internet with, you know, the election of Barack Obama in 2008, there’s definitely been a rise in conspiracy theories when it comes to social media, when it comes to the internet. Conspiracy theories are now more than ever able to spread, proliferate, change, evolve, mutate, I guess. They’re definitely more prevalent today. We have an emboldened Republican Party headed by President Trump and any number of his his followers that now we see post election , an election that they’ve clearly lost still pushing this conspiracy theory that that the election was rigged, that there’s some kind of movement against them. And you know, it’s not going to stop, these people aren’t going to go away. And I think Trump has shown a, you know, a playbook almost for future conspiracy theorists or future megalomaniacs who want to rise to power, all you got to do is lie, the media will have no idea how to cover you will give you all kinds of free publicity. And you could make your way into power. So I think you’re absolutely accurate and thinking that they’re more prevalent today because they are. The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray. Luke 5:15–16This line concludes the beautiful and powerful story of a man who was full of leprosy and who came to Jesus, fell prostrate before Him and pleaded with Jesus to heal Him if it was His will. Jesus’ response was simple: “I do will it. Be made clean.” And then Jesus did the unthinkable. He touched the man. The man, of course, was immediately healed of his leprosy, and Jesus sent him to show himself to the priest. But word of this miracle spread fast, and many people kept coming to see Jesus as a result.It’s easy to imagine the scene of people talking about this miracle, thinking of their own ailments and those of their loved ones, and wanting to be healed by this miracle worker. But in the passage above, we see Jesus do something very interesting and prophetic. Just as the great crowds gathered and just as there was much excitement about Jesus, He withdrew from them to a deserted place to pray. Why would He do this?Jesus’s mission was to teach His followers the truth and to lead them to Heaven. He did this not only by His miracles and teachings but also by setting an example of prayer. By going off to pray to His Father alone, Jesus teaches all of these excited followers what is most important in life. Physical miracles are not what is most important. Prayer and communion with the Father in Heaven is what’s most important.If you have established a healthy life of daily prayer, one way you can share the Gospel with others is by allowing others to witness your commitment to prayer. Not so as to receive their praise, but to let them know what you find most important in life. When you commit yourself to daily Mass, going to church for adoration, or simply taking time alone in your room to pray, others will notice and will be drawn into a holy curiosity which may also lead them to a life of prayer.Reflect, today, upon your mission to evangelize others by the simple act of allowing your life of prayer and devotion to be known by them. Let them see you pray, and if they ask, share with them the fruits of your prayer. Allow your love of our Lord to shine forth so that others will receive the blessing of your holy witness.Lord, help me to be committed to a life of true prayer and devotion each and every day. Help me to be faithful to this life of prayer and to continually be drawn deeper in my love of You. As I learn to pray, use me to be a witness to others so that those who need You the most will be changed by my love of You. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Luke 17:15-16This leper is one of ten that Jesus healed as He traveled through Samaria and Galilee. He was a foreigner, not a Jew, and was the only one to return to Jesus to offer thanks for his healing.Note that there are two things this Samaritan did once he was healed. First, he “returned, glorifying God in a loud voice.” This is a significant description of what happened. He did not just return to say thank you, rather, his gratitude was expressed in a very passionate way. Try to imagine this leper shouting and praising God out of a sincere and deep gratitude.Second, this man “fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked Him.” Again, this is no small act on the part of this Samaritan. The act of falling at Jesus’ feet is another sign of his intense gratitude. It’s not only that he was excited, he was also deeply humbled by this healing. This is seen in the act of humbly falling down at the feet of Jesus. It shows that this leper humbly recognized his unworthiness before God for this act of healing. It’s a beautiful gesture which acknowledges that gratitude is not enough. Instead, profound gratitude is necessary. Profound and humble gratitude must always be our response to the goodness of God.Reflect, today, upon your approach to the goodness of God. Of the ten who were healed, only this one leper manifested the right attitude. The others may have been grateful, but not to the extent that they should have been. How about you? How deep is your gratitude toward God? Are you fully aware of all that God does for you every day? If not, seek to imitate this leper and you will discover the same joy that he discovered.Lord, I pray that I may daily turn to You in deep and total gratitude. That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. Luke 24:13–16This appearance of Jesus to two of His disciples is intriguing and fascinating. They were quite distraught and didn’t seem to know what to think about Jesus’ death. They had hoped He was the Messiah but then He was killed. And then there were some who claimed His tomb was empty. What should they make of all this?As the story goes on, Jesus “interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures.” With that, these disciples realized that this man with whom they were speaking had incredible wisdom and understanding, so they invited Him to stay with them. Jesus stayed and sat down with them in their home. While there, Scripture says that “he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.”Again, this is intriguing and fascinating. Why did Jesus appear to them, conceal who He was, sit down and break bread with them, allow them to suddenly recognize Him and then vanish into thin air? Well, He did it for a reason and we should be very attentive to this.Jesus wanted those disciples, as well as all of us, to know that He who rose from the dead was very much alive and that we would recognize Him in the breaking of the bread. We would recognize Him in the Most Holy Eucharist!This appearance of Jesus to these disciples was, in fact, an appearance to teach all of us the simple truth of His presence in the Eucharist. It was at that moment, as they “took bread, said the blessing, broke it,” that Jesus was suddenly made manifest to their minds and souls. Jesus is alive in the Eucharist! But it also tells us that He is veiled in the Eucharist. This combination of being veiled and truly present gives us wonderful guidance in our faith.Jesus is here, right now, in our presence, but we most likely do not see Him. But He is truly here! These disciples were in the presence of Jesus and they did not realize it. The same is true for us. We are constantly in His presence and we do not realize it. This is especially true when we are at Mass but it is also true in countless other ways throughout our day. We must commit ourselves to seeing Him, to recognizing Him and to adoring Him. We must discover the resurrected presence of Jesus all around us.Too often we think that our Lord is present only in extraordinary ways. But that is not true! He is constantly present to us in very ordinary ways. He is here with us right now, loving us, speaking to us, and calling us to love Him. Do you see Him? Do you recognize His presence?Reflect, today, upon the experience of these disciples. If you were them, you’d be blessed to be in the presence of the Savior of the world. What an honor! The truth is that God is with you now and always. He is constantly with you and is constantly speaking with you. Look for Him and listen to His voice. You may be surprised at how near He really is.Lord, thank You for loving me so much that You are always with me. Help me to see You and to recognize Your gentle and still voice. Give me the eyes of faith to see You present in the Most Holy Eucharist, and help me to discern Your presence in every ordinary event of my day. I love You, dear Lord. I hate to be really heavy about that, but I think actually, you know, to put a positive slant on it, I reckon we're gonna come out the other side of much better society and a much better community. I think we're getting a really good reminder of what's actually important in life. And I think that's a good that's a good thing to hang on to. That one. Dan Ilic 14:41There was such a weird point in kind of time where the smoke you couldn't really avoid it anywhere like you like with the corona virus. I feel like you can probably do if you don't have it, you can probably do your best to not have it for a long time. But the smoke was just so unavoidable because you couldn't really escape to any place that didn't have it. Unknown Speaker 15:01Yeah at one point I was sharing it the water tank where I was staying actually got permeated with smoke. It was like sharing scotch. It was not pleasant. I feel Unknown Speaker 18:18like Dan Ilic 18:20it is consistent with like this government's long term war against teachers, namely that it's hoping that instead of having to underpaid them, though, they can just get what? Unknown Speaker 18:42destination crook? Unknown Speaker 18:44Yeah. It's funny. Remembering the value of all of these kind of jobs like nurses and teachers, right. Dan Ilic 18:50What is what is it Darren, I mean, you're someone who's seen the brunt of this kind of attitude from our government that there seems to be a dislike or distrust of expertise of really smart people who know things. Why is it that this government does have all got this government? Not in this not it's not particularly this government coming through all around the world? Yeah, have a have a distaste and a distrust of people with expertise and doing everything they can to seemingly defund them and get rid of them. I think Unknown Speaker 19:22the brutal truth of that is because they delivered some uncomfortable facts and truth to them that didn't suit their sort of political ends. And so they undermine them as much as they could, you know, people have been profiteering politically and financially for years of undermining facts and truth. Dan Ilic 19:38But getting rid of like that getting rid of like the pandemic unit for the CDC in America seems like a completely counterintuitive act, Unknown Speaker 19:48given that we're just they're just sitting around doing nothing. It's just Dan Ilic 19:52wasting money, and then we can get them back. We want them we know where they are. We can get them back whenever we want. Unknown Speaker 20:00No like firemen, they just sit around all day doing nothing get rid of them. Unknown Speaker 20:03Most medicine? Dan Ilic 20:05Do you honestly think Darren that that is like that is the motive like it's it is purely, you're you're delivering information that is too dangerous for us politically to even have. Unknown Speaker 20:14But I think well, you're probably I mean, if you look at the climate change, the climate change is an obvious one, you know, that's where it seems to be the lightning rod for this sort of approach of denying truth, or whatever you want to call it. And it was literally that there were some really rich people and big companies that were, you know, their profits are under threat, and they've spent a lot of money trying to prop up those profits by sitting down, you know, we saw the tobacco companies do it before them and then and then what's happened is the political parties have all figured out that that's a really good way of getting hold of power is to is to take that approach, you know, and I think that that's fine when the threat is just as existential as the as the coronavirus, but it's, you know, 20 or 40 years down the road and suddenly that model doesn't work when the threat is very real and very now, huh? Dan Ilic 20:56Well, here are some good things about Kovac 19. There has been a huge reduction in co2 emissions up to 10%. In some countries, because of the ban on cruise ships, the Venice canals have become extremely clear and you can see to the bottom bottom of them without pollution and sediment. And another good thing about the Cova 19 is that your revision has been cancelled for this year. So no Eurovision what are the good things have we seen out there because it covered 19 do you think Unknown Speaker 21:25a lot of videos of penguins loose in zoos looking at the fish for them all sounds pretty good. Unknown Speaker 21:32I think my favourite good news story was the directive from ISIS that came out through the way Unknown Speaker 21:41ISIS put out a press release banning the Unknown Speaker 21:47suicide bombers from going to Europe because obviously, you know, Venice, probably beautiful but you know, even all h&s sit up today. They've ended it. If terrorists you go into Europe Unknown Speaker 22:03you don't want to you know, blow off a building while you're feeling a bit snotty in the nose there Unknown Speaker 22:10is a one way ticket surely I don't quite know what they're saying. Unknown Speaker 22:16And then I believe the the mayor of Baltimore has ordered everyone to stop shooting each other so they can. So they can create rooms for in the hospitals for covered victims. So I think they'll be a massive downturn in street violence until we run out of toilet paper and then there'll be a massive upturn in street violence. Dan Ilic 22:37Well, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been making great content from his home he's been advocating for social distancing you may have seen earlier in the week him feeding his ponies inside his home. Here is one of him sitting in a sitting in a in a hot tub, smoking a cigar giving some very good advice. Unknown Speaker 22:55I just finished a bike ride and a little bit of workout and I just didn't keep staying at home all the way from the crowd and away from outside. The reason why I'm saying that is because I still see photographs and videos of people sitting outside compares all over the world and having a good time and hanging out in crowds. That is not wise, because that's how you can get the virus. That's how you get it, like contact with other people. So stay away from crowds stay away from being in restaurants and outdoor cafes, especially now it's springtime, all the kids are going to the beach and celebrate and drink and all that stuff. This is not a good idea to stay away from the crowd, go home, and then we can overcome this whole problem. This whole virus in no time, but you got to go and follow those orders. Just remember, stay at home. Don't go go to crowds, but they took it down. Dan Ilic 23:55Think he's been incredibly responsible. He is the most responsible vendor out there. I've been trying to tell my mom to stay away from her church and stop going to the shops. But she just ignores me She completely says she says, you young people are too worried we're at church and we're not coughing over each other. The upside of that is I can say my inheritance will be coming a little bit earlier than I expected, but it's silver linings, a silver lining, how do we convince how do we convince our parents that they should be staying home kalon that there's a property that they can buy inside their already existing property? Unknown Speaker 24:33negatively? Unknown Speaker 24:38Many negatively, Unknown Speaker 24:41that it just sort of folds in on itself, and then they'll never leave. They'll always be searching for that next property that we can't have Unknown Speaker 24:49a good excuse for them to be more xenophobic, because then they can blame someone for them. Having to be Dan Ilic 24:57I hate to tell this story, but my mom, you very quietly xenophobic. whenever she's telling anecdotes she will dip her voice whenever she has to name the race of the person in the anecdote so she'll be like, and then at the shops I saw, man and he just went. Well, that's nice Alicia, Alicia blunting is xenophobia. Unknown Speaker 25:18My mom went from complete and utter coronavirus denial to full blown prepper in 24 hours. So I had a quiet word to use. A lot of people have suggested to me that I'm not taking Corona virus seriously enough by comparing it to the hopes of climate change. Oh, God. Well, let me tell you Cova 19 as they're calling it, that some sort of scientist or something Ah God, nerds. kovat 19 is a hoax much like carbon dioxide. I haven't seen it with my own eyes so it doesn't exist. And my eyesight is very good, like posted on the door on the other side of my Southern Highlands studio where I'm broadcasting from for the next six months for no reason in particular, I could read a sign that says warning stay 1.5 metres away from this door. Nothing to do with coronavirus I've just got to keep the home studio sounding crystal clear. Don't want some sort of goose coming in here squawking at me, and I'm not talking about any easy God. “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen.” Matthew 4:15-16This passage from Matthew’s Gospel is quoted from Isaiah the Prophet at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. After quoting Isaiah, Jesus goes forth saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”This prophecy from Isaiah is clearly fulfilled in Jesus’ coming. Jesus is the “great light” of which Isaiah speaks. Therefore, Isaiah is prophesying this particular historical moment when Jesus appears in our world preaching His divine Word.But Isaiah’s words should not only speak to us about this one-time historical event of the coming of Christ and His public ministry, it should also reveal to us the fact that Jesus is the “great light” who continues to shine in whatever darkness we encounter.Sit with that image. Imagine complete darkness covering the entire land. Perhaps imagine being out in the wilderness on a very cloudy night with the stars and moon completely covered. Imagine, then, the clouds parting as the sun immediately begins to rise. Slowly the darkness is cast aside as the rising sun sheds light across the entire land. This is not only an image of what happened long ago when Jesus came and began His ministry, it also happens every time we sincerely listen to the Word of God and allow His Word to penetrate our minds and hearts. Jesus’ words must fill us with Himself for He is the Great Light of Truth. Reflect, today, upon the area of your life that seems to be covered with darkness. What is it that leaves you feeling hurt, angry or confused? What is it that burdens your heart more than anything else? It is this area of your life, more than any, that Jesus desires to enter and to shed the rays of His glory upon.Lord, come to me and enter the darkness of my mind and heart. Come and cast aside the sorrow and pain that I feel this day. Bring clarity to my confusion and replace it with the bright knowledge of Your loving presence. Jesus, I trust in You.

And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Luke 17:15-16This leper is one of ten that Jesus healed as He traveled through Samaria and Galilee. He was a foreigner, not a Jew, and was the only one to return to Jesus to offer thanks for his healing.Note that there are two things this Samaritan did once he was healed. First, he “returned, glorifying God in a loud voice.” This is a significant description of what happened. He did not just return to say thank you, rather, his gratitude was expressed in a very passionate way. Try to imagine this leper shouting and praising God out of a sincere and deep gratitude.Second, this man “fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked Him.” Again, this is no small act on the part of this Samaritan. The act of falling at Jesus’ feet is another sign of his intense gratitude. It’s not only that he was excited, he was also deeply humbled by this healing. This is seen in the act of humbly falling down at the feet of Jesus. It shows that this leper humbly recognized his unworthiness before God for this act of healing. It’s a beautiful gesture which acknowledges that gratitude is not enough. Instead, profound gratitude is necessary. Profound and humble gratitude must always be our response to the goodness of God.Reflect, today, upon your approach to the goodness of God. Of the ten who were healed, only this one leper manifested the right attitude. The others may have been grateful, but not to the extent that they should have been. How about you? How deep is your gratitude toward God? Are you fully aware of all that God does for you every day? If not, seek to imitate this leper and you will discover the same joy that he discovered.Lord, I pray that I may daily turn to You in deep and total gratitude. May I see all that You do for me every day and may I respond with wholehearted thanksgiving. Jesus, I trust in You.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16This is the most popular verse in the Bible. It tells us we will have eternal life through Jesus Christ. It also reveals the heart of God. What motivated God to send his only son? It was his love for the world.Seven hundred years before John wrote his famous verse there lived a man named Isaiah. He was a prophet who spoke on God’s behalf. He wrote about the coming of a very special child given to this world steeped in darkness. The details surrounding this child are not what one would expect. The baby is from an out of the way place. He is born to an unwed teenage peasant girl. The first to hear the news are marginalized shepherds. Many parts of the Christmas story are not what they should be. Or are they? The world does not recognize greatness in this way. I hope you see that God loves to bring greatness and power into your life in ways you do not expect.But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29Why do we spend great amounts of time, money, and thought trying to make ourselves great? Why do we want to be seen as strong? When we are full of ourselves there is less room for God. A simple definition of sin: “Me first!” Isaiah reminds us we were born into a darkened existence but light has arrived through the birth of a baby. The names of this baby can only be attributed to God. Amazingly, the child comes to us as a gift. This gift causes you to swallow your pride. It confronts you with the reality that you have a desperate need to be rescued. At the same time it shows you how important you are. God loves you and sent his son to die for your sins. This is the true spirit of Christmas and when we embrace this love we in turn, love others.

This passage depicts God’s saving acts not only on behalf of Elijah, but also on behalf of those who are associated with the prophet, even a foreigner, the widow of Zarephath.8The word of the Lord came to [Elijah,] saying, 9“Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” 11As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” 13Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.” 15She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.Psalm: Psalm 146The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down. RSecond Reading: Hebrews 9:24-28The letter to the Hebrews describes Christ as a high priest who offers himself as a sacrifice for our sin. Christ does not die again and again each year. He died once, is alive with God, and will reveal himself on the last day.24Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; 26for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, 28so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.Gospel: Mark 12:38-44After engaging in a series of public arguments with religious leaders in the temple, Jesus contrasts the proud and oppressive ways of those leaders with the sacrificial humility and poverty of the widow.38As [Jesus] taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! 40They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”41He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Mark 10:23–31 23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

I attended Mass this morning as I do every Friday. I find much comfort in the intimate setting of the chapel with only a handful of faithful Catholics in attendance. One of today's readings was particularly inspiring. There are many passages in the Bible that speak of God's profound love for us and our call to love one another equally. But for some reason, this one really resonated with me.
