JB leaps into spring with music from the likes of Adam Holmes, Michael Walsh, Doc Watson and the Island's own guitar guru - Davy Knowles
Interview with internationally-known guitar maker and musician Paul Reed Smith. 2024 Paul Reed Smith - Eightlock is a band of high-level musicians who are friends and have “locked” together recording and performing a new kind of groove with its roots in Baltimore funk, DC go-go and New Orleans swing. The band's sound is a heady brew of blues, soul, rock, funk and other roots sounds, all stirred-up into a groove-alicious gumbo. The line-up is three drummers, a bass player, a female singer and three guitar players, and the excitement around their three drummer groove is infectious. The band's three drummers are: Dennis Chambers (John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin) who was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2001; Gregory Grainger (Whitney Houston, Acoustic Alchemy); and Ju Ju House the legendary DC Go-Go drummer (Roberta Flack, Trevor Horn and The Chuck Brown Band). Bassist Gary Grainger has performed with John Scofield, Nancy Wilson, George Duke and Bill Evans. Vocalist Mia Samone Davis has a beautiful multifaceted voice that got its start in gospel music at a very young age. Guitarist Mike Ault regularly performs with high caliber artists including Rachelle Ferrell David Grissom, and Davy Knowles. Guitarist Bill Nelson is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center where he was introduced and invited to join the band in their efforts to raise money for cancer patients and families. “This group of highly respected and world-renowned musicians have a lot to say musically and spiritually,” Paul Reed Smith says. “It's been an absolute joy to be the catalyst for their gifts resulting in the music found in Lions Roaring in Quicksand.” Added guitarist/vocalist Dr. Bill Nelson: “The musicianship in Eightlock is extraordinary, but what amazes me most is that the music - both the recordings and live performances - just keep getting better and better. Locking into an Eightlock groove is a dream." And dynamic lead singer Mia Samone summed it up by saying, "Creating this CD reminded me that, ‘Peace is the price when the mind is at war'......inner peace is priceless." In addition to performing and recording with his own band, Paul Reed Smith has played with artists such as Santana, Alter Bridge and the Doobie Brothers. He was honored by Vintage Guitar Magazine as a Hall of Fame inductee in 2011. Paul has countless industry connections through all of the artists that endorse his guitars, plus invaluable marketing opportunities through his guitar company and all of the music stores around the world that sell his guitars. Grammy-award winning Mexican rock band Manaì had him open their residency at the LA Forum this year, John Mayer and Santana have taken him on tour. In addition to 10 powerful original songs on Lions Roaring in Quicksand, the new album features a cover of a Manaì song in English, “Ay, Doctor,” that the band has agreed to share on their social media to their millions of fans, as well as scintillating versions of the Al Green soul classic, “Love and Happiness,” the legendary Edwin Starr song, “War,” and “99,” a chart hit for the original version in France. Super excited to announce new guest, Ben Brandt, to The Story! One could say Ben Brandt was born with a guitar in his hands and this would not be far from the truth. The son of a professional musician, Ben cannot remember a time when the guitar was not a part of his life. As a baby he was fascinated by the instrument and by the time he was three he was picking out riffs on his father's guitars. In 1999, at the age of 10, Ben started his own band, the Ben “Jamin” Brandt Project and his talents were discovered by a local radio station in NJ, WDHA. They promoted his music and booked him at festivals where he shared the stage with the likes of Savoy Brown and Billy Hector. In 2010 Ben moved to Harrisburg, PA and started the Ben Brandt Trio in which he was both vocalist and lead guitarist. They played throughout the PA/MD/DC/VA region where they quickly gained a wide fan base in the Blues/Rock scene. Over the years Ben and his band have had the opportunity to open for a number of well known acts such as Jimmy Thackery, Doyle Bramhall II, Gary Hoey, Coco Montoya, The Record Company, etc. He has also been called to the stage to sit in with notable guitarists such as Davy Knowles, Artur Menezes and Albert Castiglia. Ben also is a member of the Central Pennsylvania Blues Society (BSPA) and frequently performs at their weekly jam sessions. In 2019 Ben teamed up with singer/songwriter Kevin Koa and formed the Soul Miners Union, a roots and blues based project that featured original songs with great grooves and catchy lyrics. Their debut album was recorded and produced by legendary guitarist/producer Josh Smith at his Flat V studio in Los Angeles. The album was released in September 2020. Blues Rock Review wrote, “Brandt brings a gritty, seasoned approach to the songs he captains.” At times Ben provides “crisp licks and understated solos” whereas other songs allow Ben “the space to stretch out and cut into some aggressive playing” with “riff driven rhythm and ominous lyrics.” The album contained “deft playing, seamless transitions and memorable choruses” and was a “fresh take on a few different blues areas.”Ben's influences over the years have included a very eclectic mix of Blues, Prog and Rock from Chris Cain, Gary Moore and Eric Johnson to Andy Timmons, Robin Trower, Steve Vai and Alex Lifeson. These different genres and playing styles provide Ben with a broad palette to pull from to hone his craft. Dynamics and phrasing are key components in Ben's playing where every note has meaning and purpose, and his impeccable tone is sought after by guitarists both young and old.Ben's skills are well known in Harrisburg, PA and the surrounding tri-state area where he continues to perform on a regular basis. Ben is not one to be put in a box and always strives to learn new things, pushing himself and the musicians he plays with. At 32 years of age and over 20 years of playing live Ben has acquired a lot of experience yet he has truly only begun to show the world what he is capable of.You can find Ben and his projects here:Website: https://www.soulminersunion.com/newsSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5ezvhPd5zaWyKCWFWAjPSYFacebook: Ben Brandt & the Soul Miners UnionSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

This week im chatting I'm chatting to Tod Bowers. In 1998 he helped form The Steepwater Band along with Jeff Massey& Joseph Winters, and over 20 years released 6 studio albums, 2 live albums, a few EPs and numerous singles. Steepwater notoriously known as road-dogs, performed well over 2,500 gigs worldwide, including supporting amazing artists like ZZTop, Gov't Mule, Wilco, Buddy Guy, Drive-By Truckers, T-Model Ford, Bad Company, Leon Russell, Blackberry Smoke and Taj Mahal. In 2019 he parted ways from Steepwater, and quickly was recruited by Manx-born musician Davy Knowles for his band. Shortly after Tod joining the group, Davy was signed by Mascot Label Group/Provogue Records. Make It UpCruzados, Nine Million TearsSamantha Fish, FasterNathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Love Me Till I'm GoneMike Younger, Baby What Can I SayAlly Venable, Hateful BluesTroy Wilson & Aaron Gillett, Blues In The DarkDavy Knowles, One & The SameArchie Lee Hooker & The Coast To Coast Blues Band, My BabyLake Street Dive, Know That I KnowStarlite Campbell Band, Stone Cold Crazy

A more mid-tempo show lies ahead, without quite the hectic usual pace. Davy Knowles, Tony Holiday, Buffalo Nichols, Hanna PK, and Miss Lady Blues shine in this hour. There are a couple of new names in that list with Roadhouse debuts, too. So, maybe a little less tempo but no less another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Anthony also has a lot of sonic ties to Michigan, including mastering albums for Red Tail Ring, Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, Stephen Lynch, Sky & Signal, and The Red Sea Pedestrians. We talked in February 2018 at his private studio, The Drake, nestled into a a quiet neighborhood in Logan Square.
We rewind our way through the years of great performances by the best guitarists from and passing through Music City. It's a tribute to the instrument that made Nashville possible, drawing on electric and acoustic masters. Featured are bluegrass rising star Molly Tuttle, the jazz ease of Pat Bergeson, country twang from Kenny Vaughan, plus all around mastery of Jim Oblon and the always in-demand Guthrie Trapp. The show closes with a full set by the fiery young Englishman reviving 1970s blues rock tradition, Davy Knowles. Guitar geeks will love it but all are invited.
This week on MCR, three from Nashville and a one man British invasion. The celebrated band Blank Range demonstrates exquisite song craft and harmony vocals in a shaggy indie rock style. Hugh Masterson, a recent transplant from Wisconsin, delivers straight up country rock and well told stories. And from a literal isle in the British Isles, emerging blues star Davy Knowles. Also on the bill, a return visit from hard country phenomenon Emi Sunshine. She played Roots when she was ten years old adn she was darn good. Now she's 13 and the growth has been exponential.

A reappearance of this guest on the Amps and Axes Podcast, he has just begun his new tour, which looks like it's going to take him to quite a few places across the globe this year, so find a comfortable podcast consumption position and welcome back, from the Isle of Man, Mr Davy Knowles. Enjoy!
