First, Executive Director of Climate Group North America Angela Barranco joins with Sammy Roth, Climate Columnist at the L.A. Times and host of the new podcast Boiling Point, on how major print publications are covering climate and communicating climate risk, how this has changed, and what we can do to combat misinformation. Then, Climate Group's Adam Lake speaks with Stephanie Abrams, Meteorologist at The Weather Channel, to explore how broadcast coverage of climate change has evolved and how audiences are responding to more frequent instances of extreme weather. Finally, Climate Group's Liisa Kaufman joins with Kira Akerman, Director of the climate change documentary Hollow Tree, to walk us through her filmmaking process and how longform media and storytelling can shape the narrative around climate action.

Hi, Curious Listener! Today's episode finds us in the small town of Apple Valley, Ohio where a massacre took place in the middle of the day. The horrific nature of the crimes rocked this community, but there is a survivor. A true hero. Today, I tell you the story of three murders and a kidnapping, of the monster who perpetrated the crime, and of the little girl who became her dad's (and a lot of other people's) hero. For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to writer Philip Miller to discuss his new novel 'The Hollow Tree', which will be published by Polygon Books on the 4th April. It's the second in the Shona Sandison series of novels, following on from the critically acclaimed 'The Goldenacre', and Phil talks about the challenges of writing a sequel, the balance between writing something recognisable but new, the importance of first lines and grabbing readers' attention, the influences on the series, writing multiple characters, and what comes next. They also discuss genre writing, the uncanny, small town dynamics, writing about home, Phil's other fiction, and much more, including the current situation in terms of the arts in Scotland, and its coverage in the media. The Goldenacre was one of SWH!'s favourite books of 2022, and 'The Hollow Tree' among the most anticipated for 2024, and it was such a pleasure to be able to talk to the author himself. In this episode I admit that I am truly exhausted and weary right now - partly from my own personal life and also because of the troubles of the world and our planet right now. But I've been inspired by a new book of poetry (Love Notes fro the Hollow Tree by Jarod K. Anderson) and by the coming birth of my first grandchild and I'll share with you how I'm regrouping and becoming re-energized through a connection with nature. I hope you find it helpful! Yes, I know this is a funny title. What is this edition of The Anxious Morning about? Why, Drew? WHY????You know that thing where you break up with your partner because no matter how hard you try and no matter how many times you beg, plead, reason, or argue, things are just not working out? You want it work out. You really do, but in the end you have to end the relationship because it’s never going to be what you hoped it would be.We’ve all been there. It sucks. Reality is super inconvenient and does not care about our feelings. Now imagine that you work through all the pain and the heartache and make all the adjustments that come along with a breakup. You do the hard work. You’re finally getting over it and moving forward with your life. Excellent! Then one day out of the blue you get a letter from your ex. WTF? What is this all about?According to the letter, your ex has changed. Lessons have been learned. Growth has happened. They’re better now. They love you. They want you back. You have a three page handwritten letter in your hand designed to convince you that THIS TIME WILL BE DIFFERENT! You know you should throw away the letter and never think about it ever again. Keep walking. Keep moving forward. Move on. But … reason is sometimes no match for emotion so you send a text and next thing you know the relationship is back in full swing and you are believing that this time it really is different.Until it’s not. Two weeks later you’re hurt, frustrated, disappointed, disillusioned, and kicking yourself for ever believing a word of that letter. Now you have to process the breakup again. More emotional heavily lifting now complicated by the fact that you are judging yourself really harshly for falling for the lies again. Raise your hand if you’ve been here before. Many of us have.Nice story, but what’s the point, Drew? What else rolls in on you when you think it’s over, dumps a metric ton of words and thoughts on you to convince you that THIS TIME is different and special, then leaves you wondering why you followed along and got fooled AGAIN?Think about it. I bet you know the answer.Next time you get a letter from your ex, acknowledge that they are super charming and very convincing. Acknowledge that you are drawn on an emotional level to believe every word and open that dialogue with them again. Allow yourself to be human and feel that natural pull. Recognize the PROCESS.Then stop. Be still. Allow all those emotions and feelings and desires to be there. Breathe. Make a little space for yourself to operate in. You can do that. Then take that letter from your ex, with all its marvelously persuasive language … and burn it.The rest of your day might be kinda tough once you do, but you’ll likely feel stronger, prouder, more capable, and even a bit more confident tomorrow.Sorry, ex. Not today.I’m currently reading Love Notes from the Hollow Tree by Jarod K Anderson. It’s the second poetry/prose compilation from this author, and I’m enjoying his thoughts as much in this book as I did in the first. Oh, and I’m reading it with someone very special. You know who you are. Every Tuesday I’ll let you know what I’m currently reading. I read quite a bit on psychology and philosophy, but really you never know what I’ll have in my Kindle or Audible libraries! If you’re on Goodreads and into books, you can follow/friend me over there. Here’s a link to my “currently reading” shelf. I’d love to see what you’re reading and what you recommend. In November of 2010, police entered the Ohio home Tina Herrmann shared with her boyfriend Greg and her two children, 13-year-old Sarah and 11-year-old Kody. All of the residents of the house were missing, in addition to Tina's best friend, Stephanie Sprang. Evidence inside the home indicated a brutal slaughter had taken place there; however, neither of the missing people nor their bodies could be found. Shoeprints from 13-year-old Sarah were found leading to a car missing in the garage. If Sarah made it out alive, she was now in the clutches of a monster who had a 24-hour head start on them. On this weeks episode the girls decide to un-pigeon hole themselves (TAKE THAT, RANDY!) and travel to Italy for a quick little diamond heist, courtesy of Sam. She breaks down the absolutely insane (but honestly impressive) burglary that was known as the Antwerp diamond heist. The amount of work and planning that went into it was exhausting to even think about, but Sam's lady boner for the break down of the whole thing is some how MORE impressive. . Amanda's portion is once again real murdery. With big thanks to Mary, we travel to Knox County, Ohio for what will come to be known as the Hollow Tree murders. In a secluded area of Ohio, one families lives were changed forever, because of a former tree trimmer and tree enthusiast (Maybe part time Lorax). Hey guys! We were unable to record last week (election week) due to stalking the news, and working the polls. So we pulled this episode from our archive. This was recorded in our old setup so I'm sorry if the quality is not the greatest, we just really wanted to still get an episode out! -Madison details the horrific crimes of Mount Vernon, Ohio murderer Matthew Hoffman. Despite what happened, he still sticks by the story that this was a robbery gone wrong. Matthew staked out this home, brought a giant knife, and then murdered this innocent family when they found them. There is murder, kidnap, and the most insane details of his home....ever. We’re talking about a guy who was clearly a little too obsessed with trees, and I think you’ll see a common theme of trees throughout this story leading up to the event that would land him in jail for murdering three people and holding a 13 year old girl hostage. We're talking about Matthew Hoffman and the hollow tree he stuffed his victims into. Vancouver's Jett Pace aka Old Man Canyon started out as a sort of indie folk artist and he found quick success with his first release the Phantoms & Friends EP. Many songs off that record ended up in poignant montages on several popular television shows (for example MTV's Awkward, Showtime's Shameless and Bravo's Suits). After a break, Old Man Canyon returned in 2016 with a new record Delerium (his debut full length). This time Jett has added synthesizers to his sound while leaving the folkier stuff behind. I hung out with Jett before his record release party. While we chatted, his phone kept buzzing. Many family members needed directions to the show. Here's a list of the things we talk about in the van: the jungle psychedelic mushroom trip that helped him refocus his music, how to find the right people to take on the road, moonwalking to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" for his mom, feeling trapped by the folk acoustic guitar song format, becoming a vintage synth nerd, urine on the tour van floor, and much more. Listen! Tracks played on the show... 1) Old Man Canyon, Delirium (2016) “Hollow Tree” 2) Old Man Canyon, Delirium (2016) “Back to the Start” 3) Old Man Canyon, Phantoms & Friends EP (2013) “Phantoms & Friends” 4) Old Man Canyon, Delirium (2016) “I Don't Wanna Go Out” ALL songs CANCON
