Annual feast honors the power and significance of the name "Jesus," which means "God saves" or "Savior" in Hebrew/Aramaic. Observed during first week of January using varying dates & names by Catholics and some Protestant denominations (Anglican, Episcopal, and Lutheran), the invocation is rooted in the biblical account where the angel Gabriel instructs both Mary and Joseph to name the child Jesus. While the feast focuses on the primary name "Jesus," the Bible uses many other venerated names and titles to describe Christ's nature and mission. Devotion to the Holy Name was popularized in the 15th century by the Franciscan friar Saint Bernardine of Siena, who encouraged people to place the Greek monogram of Jesus' name, IHS (from the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus), on their doors. Full Text of Readings The Saint of the day is Most Holy Name of Jesus The Story of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Although Saint Paul might claim credit for promoting devotion to the Holy Name because Paul wrote in Philippians that God the Father gave Christ Jesus “that name that is above every name” (see 2:9), this devotion became popular because of 12th-century Cistercian monks and nuns but especially through the preaching of Saint Bernardine of Siena, a 15th-century Franciscan. Bernardine used devotion to the most holy name of Jesus as a way of overcoming bitter and often bloody class struggles and family rivalries or vendettas in Italian city-states. The devotion grew, partly because of Franciscan and Dominican preachers. It spread even more widely after the Jesuits began promoting it in the 16th century. In 1530, Pope Clement V approved an Office of the Holy Name for the Franciscans. In 1721, Pope Innocent XIII extended this feast to the entire Church. Reflection Jesus died and rose for the sake of all people. No one can trademark or copyright Jesus' name. Jesus is the Son of God and son of Mary. Everything that exists was created in and through the Son of God (see Colossians 1:15-20). The most holy name of Jesus is debased if any Christian uses it as justification for berating non-Christians. Jesus reminds us that because we are all related to him we are, therefore, all related to one another. A person's name represents that person and to make fun of one's name is an insult and a sign of disrespect. So how much more important is it that we never misuse the name of Jesus? St. Bernadine of Siena shows us how important it is to respect the Holy Name on today's reflection from Fr. Kubicki.
Welcome to the SSPX Podcast, and Happy New Year. This week, like last week, we're offering a special presentation on the podcast, bringing together a sermon and a reflection for the great feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. As we come to this Sunday in the traditional calendar, the Church invites us to linger over something very small in sound, yet immeasurable in meaning: the Holy Name of Jesus. This feast draws us back to the earliest days of Our Lord's life on earth, to the moment when His name was spoken and given according to the will of the Father. Before He preached, before He worked miracles, before He shed His blood on Calvary, He bore a name that already revealed His mission. In Sacred Scripture, names are never accidental. They express identity and calling. In the case of the Child born at Bethlehem, the name given to Him tells us exactly why He has come. Jesus means “God saves.” It is not a title He assumes later, but a truth present from the beginning. Even in His infancy, at His circumcision, He begins to fulfill what that name proclaims. The Church has always understood that this name is not merely to be spoken, but revered, invoked, and lived. The liturgy bows before it. The saints return to it again and again. They teach us that the Holy Name is light for the mind, strength for the will, and comfort for the wounded heart. It steadies the soul and recalls us to what matters most. Today's reflections draw from Scripture, from the Church's prayer, and from saints who loved this name deeply, especially Saint Bernard, whose words we will hear in full. January 1, 2026Today's Reading: Luke 2:21Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 61:1-11; Luke 1:57-80“And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” (Luke 2:21)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.There is something remarkable and yet so subtle in the Christmas story: the Holy Child of Bethlehem is not called Jesus until the eighth day when He is circumcised. Before verse 21, He is referred to as the baby, the child, Christ, and Lord, all glorious titles, but the personal, saving name of Jesus is bestowed upon Him in the covenant of circumcision. This is not merely a name His parents have placed upon Him from their own whims. It is the Name given by the Father in Heaven. “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Jesus means “YHWH saves.” This is God's covenant Name for His Son. And Jesus lived by it to completion. He is what His Name declares: YHWH saves. From His circumcision to His crucifixion, from that first cut of blood to the New Creation of His resurrection, Jesus fulfills the meaning of His Name for you and me. And now, you who are baptized, you are in His Name. You have been baptized into the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). You are clothed in Christ. His Name is on you even as you now dwell in His Name. When the Lord sees you, He does not remember your sin or your shame, but sees the beloved child now dwelling safely in the shelter of the Name of Jesus, “YHWH Saves!” So call upon His Name. Live under His Name. And rejoice that, as Acts 4:12 says, “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” The Name was given, the flesh was cut, the covenant fulfilled. Your name was given, the Water and the Word applied, and now the salvation declared in the Holy Name of Jesus is yours.In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Lord God, You made Your beloved Son, our Savior, subject to the Law and caused Him to shed His blood on our behalf. Every mantra is a medicinal dose. It has to go in the ear. It's auṣadhi. Hear, then it goes into your heart. So, you get 108 individual medicinal doses per round. Think of it as 108 individual medicinal doses, and each one you've got to put the dose here (points to the ear). So, make sure it goes here (ear); then it'll go here (heart), and it's perfect. It's pūrṇa means there's nothing perfect in this world, except for the Holy Name. So, as soon as you hear the perfection in the name, then you'll start drinking the whole bottle as fast as you can. O people of faith! By the order of Lord Gauranga, O brothers, I beg these three requests of you: Chant "Krsna!", worship Krsna, and teach others about Krsna. 3) Being careful to remain free of offenses; just take the holy name of Lord Krsna. Krsna is your mother, Krsna is your father, and Krsna is the treasure of your life. 4) Giving up all sinful activities, carry on your worldly duties only in relation to Lord Krsna.
