Pope Leo released his encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, on “safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence” today, May 25. (Read the encyclical here. Pope Leo presented the encyclical at the Vatican along with the panel of experts, including Christopher Olah, a co-founder of one of the world's leading AI developers, Anthropic. In a speech at the presentation, Leo stressed that the encyclical had been born out of a process of listening–to scientists and engineers developing AI; political leaders, parents, and teachers; and people concerned about autonomous weapons systems and various forms of exclusion happening on the basis of mass data gathering. Leo recaps the evolution of Catholic Social Teaching through its major documents and by explaining its key principles, in many places anticipating and rebutting criticisms that the church should either stay out of politics or completely rule it. He then moves on to the explicit examination of AI, its development and its effects on humanity in the spheres of education, labor, technology addiction, democracy and many other areas, giving concrete recommendations on how AI development could be better supervised by various configurations of local and international civil, religious and educational authorities. He denounces repeatedly the ways in which A.I. will exacerbate global inequalities, and how it is already concentrating power and decision-making in the hands of a minority of powerful individuals. Leo stresses that, for all of us, the ethics of AI cannot be simplified into “good use of A.I. is good, evil use of A.I. is evil”—AI is not, he says, a morally neutral tool, but “embodies choices and priorities through what it measures, ignores and optimizes, and how it classifies people and situations.” In other words, the moral discernment of AI cannot merely look at the uses to which it is put, but also how it is designed and what vision of the human person and society” is embedded into it . As expected, Leo turns to the use of A.I. in war. In a particularly interesting paragraph, he dismisses just war theory as “outdated,” saying it has “all too often been used to justify any kind of war” and that “Humanity possesses far more effective and capable tools for promoting human life and resolving conflicts, such as dialogue, diplomacy and forgiveness.” The document ends with a long meditation on peace, in which Leo outlines “five paths toward daily and public responsibility.” Magnifica Humanitas includes challenges and fruitful insights for everyone no matter their position in society, and we highly recommend giving it a read. After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday, President Trump warned the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestinian terrorist franchise Hamas that it must live up to its agreement to disarm. Then he added that, if that didn't happen, there were numerous nations who would be willing to use force to “wipe Hamas out.”  Unfortunately, Hamas spokesmen have repeatedly insisted that the jihadists never committed to lay down their arms. And it's unclear whether even a single country – other than Israel – is prepared to engage in the kind of costly combat required to  disarm the terrorists, let alone eliminate their organization. The likely sources for claims to the contrary are two unreliable so-called U.S. “allies”: Hamas' enablers, Qatar and Turkey. If Hamas is actually to be “wiped out” – as it must be – only Israel has the will and the capability to accomplish it. Make it so. This is Frank Gaffney.

As we continue exploring Colossians, we will dig deeper into the mixing (a.k.a. “syncretism”) which is happening in the church today between the gospel of Jesus and the powers of this world. We will specifically explore the god of Domination and the god of Self, which have so infected our body with “empty philosophies” and “high-sounding nonsense.” To untangle their influence over us, we will explore what it means for Christ to have “disarmed the rulers and authorities” of our world, and what it looks like for us to reject their influence in our own lives. By repenting of our syncretism and re-focusing on Christ above all, we may yet find a way to live in this broken world set free from the powers seeking to corrupt the gospel.

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Jason Ritchie from Pearland, TX. Our text today is Judges 5:6–8. “In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned, and travelers kept to the byways. The villagers ceased in Israel; they ceased to be until I arose; I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel. When new gods were chosen, then war was in the gates. Was shield or spear to be seen among forty thousand in Israel?”— Judges 5:6-8 Deborah paints a grim “before” picture of Israel. The roads were unsafe. Villages were abandoned. Ordinary life was in hiding. And why? Because “new gods were chosen.” They forgot God's resume and hired other “saviors.” These idols couldn't protect them — in fact, they opened the gates for war. Even worse, there wasn't a shield or spear among forty thousand in Israel. Disarmed. Vulnerable. Exposed. When God's people stop remembering His past faithfulness, they stop trusting His present protection. The result? Fear replaces courage, culture decays, and the enemy moves in. Spiritual drift never starts loud. It begins with a quiet forgetfulness. A skipped prayer. A neglected truth. A replaced affection. Before long, God's resume is dusty and idols are on the payroll. The cost is high. We lose peace. We lose protection. We lose purpose. This is why remembering matters — because the moment we forget, we're already drifting. Leaders must recall God's resume daily, and followers must cling to it as if their lives depend on it — because they do. ASK THIS: Where have you been tempted to trust a “new god” instead of the one true God? How do you recognize the early signs of spiritual drift in your own life? What specific truths about God do you need to recall to stand firm today? Who in your life needs to be reminded of God's resume right now? DO THIS: Identify one “idol” in your life — something you've looked to for safety or satisfaction — and replace it today with an intentional act of worship toward God. PRAY THIS: Lord, don't let me drift. Keep Your faithfulness at the front of my mind so no false god can take Your place. Protect me from the slow fade of forgetting You. Amen.
