Rescue Dogs Trained To Be PTSD Service Animals For Vets: From Shelter to Service. In a powerful Special Episode Podcast of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show, listeners are introduced to an inspiring story of second chances, for both people and dogs. Brett Simon from Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Palm Beach County, Florida, joins host Jay Wiley to share how rescue dogs are being trained to become PTSD service animals for veterans. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, is available for free on their website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and many other podcast platforms. “Every dog deserves a chance, and every veteran deserves help,” says Simon, a former Police K9 Handler and Military Combat Contractor who spent years working with canines in high-stress combat zones. “When we connect the two, a rescue dog needing purpose and a veteran needing healing, something extraordinary happens.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. From the Shelter to Service At Big Dog Ranch Rescue (BDRR), the largest cage-free, no-kill rescue in the United States, dogs once abandoned in shelters are given new lives through their Veteran Service Dog Training Program. The initiative not only transforms the lives of veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also saves the lives of the dogs themselves. Look for supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . The program's mission is simple yet profound: give rescue dogs a second chance by training them to become PTSD service dogs for veterans and active-duty military personnel. “We're giving hope twice,” Simon explains. “To the veteran who's struggling and to the dog who was once unwanted.” Rescue Dogs Trained To Be PTSD Service Animals For Vets: From Shelter to Service. The Healing Power of the Human-Animal Bond PTSD service dogs are specially trained to perform tasks that help alleviate symptoms and improve daily functioning for individuals living with post-traumatic stress. These dogs offer comfort, protection, and companionship, often becoming an essential part of a veteran's healing journey. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. Some of the trained tasks include: Interrupting flashbacks or anxiety attacks: by nudging or placing their head on their handler's lap. Providing comfort: through deep pressure therapy by leaning or lying against the veteran. Blocking and covering: positioning themselves in front or behind the veteran to create a sense of security. Waking from nightmares: recognizing distress and gently waking the veteran. Encouraging social interaction: helping veterans reconnect and feel more at ease in public spaces. “PTSD doesn't go away overnight,” Simon says. “But when you have a loyal companion who senses your anxiety and helps ground you, it changes everything. These dogs are trained not just to obey, they're trained to care.” Rescue Dogs Trained To Be PTSD Service Animals For Vets: From Shelter to Service. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Backed by the Veterans Administration The Veterans Administration recognizes Big Dog Ranch Rescue's program as a “Non-Traditional and Innovative” form of therapy. Through this recognition, BDRR works closely with the VA to ensure veterans receive comprehensive support while integrating their new service dogs into their daily lives. Training is provided entirely free of charge for veterans, although those from out of state are required to complete a 21-day on-site training session at the ranch in Florida (which may be spread over several months). Sponsorship opportunities are often available to help offset travel expenses. Each veteran-dog partnership is unique. BDRR's professional trainers use positive reinforcement techniques, tailoring each dog's training to match the veteran's individual needs and lifestyle. The dogs receive full vaccinations, microchipping, and access to reduced-cost veterinary care during their first year through BDRR's veterinary healing center. The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Brett Simon's Personal Journey Brett Simon's credibility in this mission comes not only from his professional background but from his personal experience. As a Police K9 handler, Military K9 contractor, and combat veteran, Simon has lived through the trauma many of these veterans face. Rescue Dogs Trained To Be PTSD Service Animals For Vets: From Shelter to Service. “After my deployments, I struggled,” Simon admits in the podcast. “PTSD isn't something you can see on the outside. But working with dogs again helped me reconnect, with myself, with others, and with purpose.” His story of PTSD recovery resonates with countless veterans who find traditional therapy incomplete or inaccessible. Simon emphasizes that service dogs are a complement to, not a replacement for, existing mental health treatment plans. “A dog isn't the cure,” he says, “but they're part of the healing.” You can find the show on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn, as well as read companion articles and updates on Medium, Blogspot, YouTube, and even IMDB. Science Supports the Bond Research has shown that PTSD service dogs help reduce anxiety and depression, improve emotional stability, and foster social connection. One study noted that veterans paired with service dogs reported a significant decrease in symptom severity and an improved quality of life. The unique human-animal bond offers veterans structure, companionship, and unconditional support — qualities often difficult to find after leaving the military. “Every partnership is different,” Simon explains. “Just like people, every dog has its own strengths. We simply find the right match.” A Mission of Hope and Second Chances At its core, Big Dog Ranch Rescue's Veteran Service Dog Training Program is about rescuing dogs from shelters and rescuing veterans from isolation. Rescue Dogs Trained To Be PTSD Service Animals For Vets: From Shelter to Service. Don't miss this episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. “Our mission is to end dog homelessness,” Simon says. “But in doing that, we're also ending hopelessness for so many of our nation's heroes.” Veterans interested in the program can apply through Big Dog Ranch Rescue's website or reach out via their Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn pages. Sean Houle is a former police officer and K9 handler who served in North Carolina for nearly a decade. In 2021, he was critically wounded in the line of duty—shot twice at point-blank range with his own service weapon. Since medically retiring, Sean has become a sought-after speaker on faith, resilience, and the lifelong commitment to service.. In this unforgettable episode of Zone 7, Crime Scene Investigator Sheryl McCollum welcomes retired Officer Sean Houle for a powerful firsthand account of survival and purpose. Sean recounts the harrowing night he was ambushed by a suspect from an earlier call—an encounter that would change his life forever. He shares the moments of chaos, the struggle to stay conscious, and the clarity that surfaced as his life hung in the balance. Together, he and Sheryl discuss the split-second decisions officers face, how department policy shapes those choices, and the unbreakable bond between handler and K9 partner. But Sean’s story doesn’t end on the pavement. During recovery, a surprising moment on a family beach trip reminds him that his calling to serve wasn’t finished—it was just taking a new shape. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: Moving through the phases of behavior acquisition for maximum training potential and skill retention and generalization. Developing Mark, Move, and Reward as your protocol. Using markers, such as try-again markers, to teach your dog variations of learned behaviors. Making place a valuable and a safe place to be for your canine. Using the place command to train perimeter neutrality. Key Takeaways: Dogs say “no” all the time - we have to have a way to make them want to go to a place and compel them to go to a place when we're developing this command. Depending on your dog, the place command can be used in different ways and with different rewarding protocols to improve the utility of the command. Place allows us to work the dog away from us. Don't be married to only training one way. As you train more dogs, you will learn that different dogs train better in different ways. You, as a handler, will also evolve in your training. This is the boring side of great training. Sometimes the greatest training starts with training the place command and neutrality. Make use of your downtime and dead time. Work on neutrality and train that using place commands instead of just doom scrolling. "This is a really simple behavior that's really hard to mess up, and it allows the handlers to get tons and tons of practice at using marker systems, at using both direct and indirect rewarding protocols. If there are mistakes, there's much going to be much less fallout than if we were in the context of detection or article indication or anything like that." — Jerry Bradshaw Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training: www.tarheelcanine.com Youtube: tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon: patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/ Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/ Sponsors: ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com Superior Canine Website: https://superiorcanine.ca/ Aaron's Superior Canine Email: aaron@superiorcanine.ca Superior Canine Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/superiorcanineinc Superior Canine Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/superiorcanineinc/ The Drive Company: https://thedriveco.com/ The Drive Company Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedrive.co Find out more about Hold The Line Conference 2024 at https://htlk9.com/ Train Hard, train smart, be safe. Caught up with Mike Lilley for an interview. Unfortunately, Rich was having some technical difficulties and could not join us. We will be rectifying this by the next episode. I believe you will find Mike's methods to be innovative and sound. The proof is always in the pudding. His name is more and more becoming synonymous with solid tracking. He's just one of the more humble, pleasant, talented men in the business. Hope you enjoy this one as much as we did. There's a lot of information to unpack. Training working dogs was a skill passed down from my father at an early age. This knowledge proved invaluable during my K9 handler recruitment as a Law Enforcement Officer and once again during my certification as a Police K9 trainer. My first K9 partner, Roscoe, was a yellow Labrador we rescued from a local shelter. He put all my training to the test, but we became an unstoppable team. Roscoe showed me the potential of misunderstood dogs and sparked what would later become my driving philosophy as a pet dog trainer. It wasn't until my second Police K9 partner, a Belgian Malinois named Neko, that I rooted my training principles and began helping local dog owners in my area with their unruly pets. Neko and I decided to retire in 2018 after an outstanding career in law enforcement and quickly embarked on the adventure of managing a pet training business. We strive to provide families all over Tennessee and the Southeast US with a clear communication system and ultimately keep misunderstood dogs in good homes and out of shelters.https://ridgesidek9tn.com/https://www.mlk9.com/Email: Suzi@mlk9Phone: 239-243-1459 Please welcome Ray Allen Manufacturing as a sponsor to the podcast. We chat about how Sgt O'Reilly started with the K9 unit, what is involved with training a police dog, and what it's been like having Radar as a partner during his career. We explore the difference in bond with a working dog vs. a companion dog and discuss how dogs purpose-bred for police work may not be well-suited to life as a family pet. Did you know that some swell people in California are trying to ban police K9's because they believe that they are racist? You can't make this stuff up and California seems to be circling the drain quicker than my exit plan. Check out this article from the LA Times: California bill would ban police dogs from arrests and crowd control, citing racial trauma. In today's episode, Coach Ashlie Walton revisits SB 960 as it's related to the recent effort that California is making to further endanger their officers. Send this show to a law enforcement friend and reach out to your local officials to ask if they too plan on carrying over these ideas into your state. ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://bi3xbvVont.ly/ CLICK HERE for our best-selling products: https://amzn.to/3xaG3xw and https://rdbl.co/3DIQVUC CLICK HERE to join our free Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/38w2e7r Check out our website and learn more about how you can work with LEO Warriors by going to: https://www.leowarriors.com/ Like what you hear? California Assembly Bill AB 742 would try to eradicate the use of police dogs, and that is a big problem for safety in our cities. Everyone can agree that crime is out of control in many cities and states - including here in California. I got the unique opportunity to interview California Senator Kelly Seyarto who has been quite vocal in his support of police and his opposition of this bill. Our chat will help you better understand how the laws are proposed and ultimately passed. Even if you're not in California, this is a great watch because these radical policies may come to your city one day. Here are the links to find what committee hearings are scheduled: Senate: https://www.senate.ca.gov/calendar Assembly: https://www.assembly.ca.gov/schedules-publications/todays-events There, you can view each committee and the floor agendas to see bills that will be heard. You can watch a video, listen in, and find call-in instructions as well. Make your voice heard wherever you live. #policedogs #california #doglover
Mike Reaver of Adlerhorst K9 has been involved in police dogs for most of his life. The son of Dave Reaver, founder of Adlerhorst K9 and the father of "police dogs." Mike and I finally got a chance to sit down and talk about police dogs, buying, training and selling them and most importantly the lives they save. Adlerhorst has placed thousands of police dogs, military k9 and personal protection dogs over the last 50+ years. We discuss the critical topic of CA Assembly Bill AB 742 - the bill that aims at eliminating police dogs as we know them. This is dangerous for police officers and deadly for citizens that are protected by these dogs every single day. This chat is one of the longest podcasts I've done and I think you'll agree that it could have gone on for a lot longer. Mike is a man of great character, a guy who loves dogs and speaks from his heart and soul. California Assembly Bill CA AB740 is being presented by California Assemblyman Corey Jackson. This bill aims at eliminating the use of police canines (k9s) in many situations including apprehending potentially dangerous suspects. He claims the bill will help right the wrongs of the past - a "carryover from a dark past." He uses inciteful language such as: "The use of police canines has inflicted brutal violence and lifelong trauma on Black Americans and communities of color," and more. This type of language will create knee-jerk reactions among policymakers and place many people, especially those in under-served communities in great danger. We've seen the problems things like defunding the police does to communities and I hope this video will open people's eyes to the true benefit of police canines. Michael Goosby is a decorated LAPD police officer, he served as chief K9 trainer for the LAPD and has been a police officer for over 30 years! I can't imagine a person better qualified to talk on this topic than him. This chat will give you great insight from a man of the highest character, a police k9 expert, and a man of color who cares about people. I hope that Assemblyman Jackson will watch this video and rethink his position or at least sit down with someone like Michael to educate himself on this topic. I'm assuming he didn't before proposing / writing this bill. Please contact Assemblyman Jackson here to voice your concern: 1021 O Street, Suite 6120, P.O.
