We're talking with Jamie Kern Lima! Jamie is the founder of IT Cosmetics. She and her husband Paulo started IT in their living room in 2008. Through a long road of overcoming the tough knocks and naysayers… they were able to build it into the #1 luxury makeup brand in the United States! Not only that but they were able to sell IT to L'Oréal for over a billion dollars… and… as they did… Jamie became the first female CEO in L'Oréal's 100+ year history. It's an incredible story… that Jamie chronicles in her brand new book, “ “Believe It - How to go from underestimated to unstoppable!” We talk about the journey… but more importantly… we dig into the backstory of how she got clear on this dream… how she found ways to dump the doubt… and defy the naysayers… to do it her own way. It's an inspiring and very raw conversation. Plus... Jamie tells us a heartfelt story she doesn't typically share about the specific and surprising “nudge” she got the first day she set foot in her brand new office! It shocked her… but also set her up for this next exciting chapter in her life. I loved this convo and I think you will too! MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE: Jamie Kern Lima didn't grow up sitting at the “cool kids table.” She was dismissed because she didn't look like what people told her she needed to look like. But… she'll be the first to tell you that it was tough and felt like a “set back” at the time… but later she realized all of that was a “set up” for an amazing future. That's because when she and her husband Paulo started IT Cosmetics… they did it in a way that industry experts said would NEVER work. As a result, she was shut out. She was turned down. She was told “NO more times than she could count. But they stayed with it. And as they did… they featured REAL women of REAL beauty in the REAL world. She pushed through and went from the underestimated… dismissed underdog… to become an unstoppable force for good that she is today. They set up a table to record at, and opened the mic up for the bar regulars to tell their tales. I am so happy to welcome Kevin and Jaime to the show. We go over how Egan’s came into their lives, and what inspired them to record the bars stories. We discuss the equipment they bring, and how they chose which stories to share. Today’s guest on Just the Tips has done something that, as far as Dean and I know, is nearly impossible: Built a thriving, rapidly expanding business while also raising four boys. Jaime Cross is the founder and CEO of Mighty in Good handcrafted bath and body collections, and her story is truly inspiring. It’s not just the fact that she’s built a successful business while balancing family life, it’s that her business has philanthropy hardwired into its model. If you’re looking for something to listen to that will get you fired up and inspired for the new year, this is the episode you were looking for. A company built around impact, not profit Jaime told us an incredible story of being home with her first chil and having a literal dream that became the blueprint for Mighty in Good. She says she can still see the dream and the blueprint to this day, and she’s never strayed from that vision. And as she tells us, she believes that if you run a profitable company, it’s your duty to give back, so Mighty in Good has partnered with organizations to help fund work to stop human trafficking, and donated products to chemotherapy patients to help them feel better. And the company makes organic sex oil. So really, all the bases are covered here. How Jaime slew Goliath Jaime says that her vision for her company has allowed her to compete directly with the big players in the skincare industry, by focusing on their values and what makes their products so different and so important to people. And that has made Mighty in Good the fastest growing organic skincare company in the world right now. She allowed us to share what their monthly revenue is, and I’m not going to put it in here, you’ll have to listen. And you’ll want to hear Dean’s mind being blown live on air, as well. Better the pain of discipline than the pain of regret Jaime talks about how entrepreneurs need to have the proper mindset for growth, and for overcoming obstacles, in order to achieve their dreams. She told us about a quote she has “inscribed anywhere I can have something inscribed” that reads “Better the pain of discipline than the pain of regret.” And as she says, that mindset encompasses a number of different viewpoints, including forcing yourself to do difficult things, but also surrounding yourself with people whose skills complement yours. It’s a really insightful and inspiring conversation that’s perfect for anyone at any stage of the entrepreneur growth chart. Own your audience Jaime is so forward-thinking in terms of where her industry is going and where her business within the industry is going. She read the tea leaves about wholesaling and selling through retail, and turned instead to e-commerce and click funnels where her company can interact directly with its audience, and she’s never looked back. This is truly an episode that will get you motivated, and get you thinking about your own path. If you listen to one episode of a podcast in 2018, make it this one. Jaime is an avid hockey fan. He loves the competitive spirit and the team aspect of the game. He enjoys the sport so much that he decided to integrate his passion for the sport into his passion for marketing. Jaime has been working in the sales and marketing arena since he left the US Army as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division in 1994. Working for three different fortune 100 companies, Jaime learned quickly how to build relationships. The challenging aspect of working for a large company was having the ability to be creative. This is the main reason he went out on his own and started his own business. As time progressed, Jaime found that he really enjoyed making websites for people and so he started Slapshot Studio in 2013 and never looked back. Jaime enjoys traveling, boating, playing guitar, hanging out with family, and playing hockey. TWEET: Ep. 65: Jaime Jay - Don’t Let Others Fence in Your #Dreams How one guy successfully dealt with the fear of starting his own business. When Jaime Jay left his service in the 82nd Airborne division of the U.S. Army he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He waited tables for a while then got into some corporate jobs where he learned a ton of things. One of those things was that he had enough ambition and dreams of his own that he really needed to start his own business. But it was scary. All of the uncertainties that come from not having a consistent paycheck and all of the responsibilities being on your shoulders were very present and very real for him. How do you deal with that kind of pressure successfully so you can move on and make your business a success? Jaime Jay shares his story on this episode of Chasing Dreams. He discovered that being stubborn and selfish are great things. Two things that Jaime Jay says were instrumental in his success are that he was stubborn and that he was selfish. What he means is this: You can’t stick with it during the hard times to overcome obstacles and achieve your goals if you aren’t stubborn. And you can’t expect to be a blessing or benefit to anyone else if you can’t first provide for yourself, so you’ve got to be determined (stubborn) and you’ve got to be clear on accomplishing what you want and need to accomplish (selfish). If you’ll take the time to hear how Jaime describes his perspective on those two things it will make a lot more sense to you and hopefully inspire you to put those two things to work for yourself. TWEET: #Leaders are always asked the #questions. When do they get to #ask their own? Leaders are always asked the questions. When do they get to ask their own? When Jaime Jay’s business team started to grow he discovered within a short amount of time that as the leader of the company, everybody came to him for answers. That was OK, he didn’t resent it or feel overwhelmed. But what he realized was that he didn’t have anyone that he could ask the questions he had. That’s when he first took the steps to get involved in a Mastermind group so that he could get help, insight, and benefit from the experiences of other leaders who were on the same business path that he was. Jaime has a lot of great things to say about masterminds and wants to encourage you to get into one as soon as you can. You can hear his challenge on this episode. Success is not in what you achieve, it’s in the goals you set. When it comes to business success most people measure it in terms of dollar signs. That’s a worthy aspiration and one that has to be in place in order to truly be profitable. But Jaime Jay says that he’s learned that viewing that long term goal as the measure of success is a sure way to become discouraged and impatient. Instead, he measures success by setting goals for each day and the accomplishment of those goals. That way he’s able to have victories every day, build momentum, and stay optimistic about the path he’s on and the ultimate results that will come from the little, daily victories. It’s a refreshing perspective that you can take away from this episode so be sure you listen to find out how Jaime implements it. In today’s episode of the podcast you’re going to hear a very detailed, step by step account of how a brand new Amazon Private Label seller went from zero to $10K per month in roughly 30 days… and he did all of it AT THE SAME TIME he was working a full time job. How is it possible? It takes dedication, attention to detail, and lots of hard work. Scott is happy to highlight Jaime’s success story here today because it’s proof not only that an Amazon Private Label business can work, but that anyone can do it… even people who are busy or working full time already. So grab a pencil and paper (you’re going to need it) and take some good notes because Jaime drops a couple of mind bombs on us in this episode. The value of “Just in Time” learning… and how Jaime did it in his business. In the process of building any business there are so many details, so many ins and outs to pay attention to that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Very easy. Building an Amazon Private Label business is exactly the same. That’s why Scott advocates and practices what he calls “just in time” learning, which is the process Jaime followed in establishing his business and products on Amazon. What is JITL? It’s doing enough research and study of the process to do the next step only. That way you are able to focus, do one thing at a time, and move ahead only when you’re ready. You’re not looking at 20 steps in the whole process, you’re just focusing on one. Hear how Jaime applied the JITL approach to his product research, samples, launch, and sales in this episode of The Amazing Seller. Pay attention when you start interacting with potential product suppliers. You can learn a lot. This is one of the biggest info bombs Jaime drops in this episode of the podcast. He contacted many suppliers to potentially source his products and then he started watching their interactions with him. Did they respond promptly? Did they respond professionally? Were they easy to communicate with? Did they send things to him in the appropriate time frame and in packaging that was right for the product? All of these things added up to show him whether the company he was talking with was trustworthy, concerned about quality, and reliable to do what they said they would do. Jaime explains it so much better from his real life experience, so you’ll want to listen to this interview. Logos and branding issues for Amazon Private Label Products can be a pain. Many people find a designer on Fiverr or someplace similar to create their logos, take their product photos, etc. And that’s a fine way to go about it, but both Jaime and Scott have found that finding someone local to where they lived was a wonderful thing. Why? The communication and time frames were much better, the quality was great, and the ability to be a part of the process was so much easier. Jaime even went to his product photo shoot and got to give input on how he wanted the products displayed and photographed. It’s another tip Jaime shares from his success that you can take from this amazing episode. 30 minutes a day to keep his Amazon product updates and rolling. No kidding. Now keep in mind, we’re not talking about the product research and launch phase. This is after all that work has been done and the product is live on Amazon for the first time. Watching the stats and sales, keeping products supplied, tweaking PPC campaigns, responding to customer issues - all of it takes 30 minutes a day or less. How it that possible? Because Amazon does the heavy lifting by handling all your marketing, shipping, and sales. It’s an amazing business to get into. Now don’t hear that to mean that it’s easy. The product identification and launch process is anything but… but it’s a rewarding way to build a business, not just an income stream. Hear how Jaime and Scott are doing that on this episode.
