The bodybuilding coach who guided Wade to victory 25 years ago is back, helping Wade crush his 50th birthday. One day back in 1996, our host Wade Lightheart happened to catch a lecture at the BC provincial bodybuilding championships. Scott Abel was presenting the lecture, and Wade quickly noticed Scott's impressive knowledge of bodybuilding. One of Scott's students stood on stage during the class, and her bodybuilding physique was aesthetically flawless. The experience made an impression on Wade. Over the next year, while Wade struggled in all of his bodybuilding competitions, usually coming in dead last, he kept noticing how multiple students of Scott's were winning contests and looking fantastic onstage. Wade decided he should find out what these other bodybuilders were learning from “Coach Abel.” So, Wade hired Scott to be his bodybuilding trainer, which turned out to be one of those defining moments in Wade's life. Scott guided Wade to many victories - not only in bodybuilding competitions - but also internal wins involving fitness, nutrition, mindset, and developing high-performance habits. As Wade approaches 50, he has hired Scott a second time to be his fitness trainer to help guide his 50 weeks to 50 fitness plan. Wade wants to hit his 50th birthday feeling fantastic (and he is documenting the entire process for biOptimizer followers), and Scott is highly qualified to help Wade achieve this milestone. Scott Abel is a 40+ year veteran of the fitness industry whose expertise is in using metabolism to transform the physiques of both everyday people and bodybuilders alike. Scott loves helping ordinary and everyday people lose weight, look better, and feel great - so don't think this episode is only for bodybuilders. Far from it - the groundbreaking information in this episode is already helping overweight, average Joes and Janes get into the best shape of their lives without feeling deprived by food restrictions. Intrigued? Be sure to tune in! In this podcast, we cover: Why Scott thinks the Keto diet is “the worst diet ever.” What is the “cycle diet?” How Scott's high-performance bodybuilding history makes him one of the best fitness coaches for “regular people” What you need to do to stay fit and healthy beyond age 50 Metabolism changes as we age and how hormones play into this Scott's recent pivot on plant-based diets Why Scott has never been a low-carb advocate Some gold nuggets found in Scott's exciting books What Professional Eaters Teach Us about Metabolism Scott was ahead of his time back in the 1970s with metabolism. He and Wade talk a lot about the science of metabolism, along with the hype and misinformation out there. As a high-performance expert who constantly seeks out real-world evidence before making claims, Scott points out how his book The Cycle Diet talks about professional eaters and what they teach us about metabolism. He points out a petite, skinny female competitive eater they call the Black Widow and how she can eat crazy amounts of food in a short amount of time - like nine pounds of cheesecake in ten minutes - yet she remains “skinny as a rail.” Her example supports everything Scott has taught about metabolism for forty years. Competitive eaters eat very little before a competition. This is what Scott teaches with the Cycle Diet: regular undereating with well-timed “refeeds.” This approach keeps your metabolism in fat-burning mode rather than getting sluggish and shifting into a fat-storing mode. You see, diets - meaning long stretches of food deprivation that only work if they last forever, are not the right approach. They set people up for failure because when someone only eats a low-calorie diet for a long time, their metabolism goes into starvation mode, meaning it slows way down to a standstill. So then, when you do enjoy a cheat meal, your body stores it as fat. This illustrates why most diets don't work in the long run. Accept the reality of where you are physically. Scott talks about his spiritual transformation over the years and how he is a different person now. Scott Abel from the 1980s was much different. One of Scott's spiritual principles he now takes to heart is “acceptance is better than resistance.” He points out that none of us can change the aging process, so it is better to accept the reality that aging is not something you have to fight off. Aging is not a bad thing. Go ahead and accept how aging is like a snowball going down a hill. “It accelerates as we age, and it's a very real thing. You're going to lose muscle. And you're going to have to accept that. You can mitigate it to some extent, but you cannot stop it.” “In my book Physique After 50, I say that ‘it's not enough to stop comparing yourself to other people based on your age, gender, or whatever. You must stop comparing yourself to the younger version of yourself.” If you are 50 years old and Scott is starting a training program with you, he will not have you doing the same routines you did in your twenties. “Why would you try to approach it with the same mindset?” Scott tells Wade, “One of my favorite sayings about aging is ‘consistency is more important than intensity. Back when you (Wade) first hired me, I would have slapped someone who said that. I used to be all about intensity.” “But now, I can throw my back out in my sleep. I used to be able to train with a little bit of backache. Now, I can hurt myself getting out of bed in the morning.” “People want to deny all this, but if you try to deny it, there's going to be some serious consequences. I like to say, ‘train your age.' If you're “past your prime” physically, yet want to get into better shape and optimize your fitness so you can live at the highest optimal level possible for you, then be sure to tune into this episode. Keep in mind this is Wade's trainer here. If you value and respect the knowledge Wade holds in the realms of fitness and health, then you will surely want to listen to what his bodybuilding mentor has to say. You know Wade is smart. Imagine how brilliant Scott is! There's a reason why Wade sought Scott's counsel. Check out this episode - training at your age level could transform your life! On this week's podcast we're talking to Scott Wilson, President Europe & Africa at BCW Global.Scott joined BCW in 2010 having previously been at Porter Novelli and Weber Shandwick. He currently leads BCW across Europe and Africa and today we're going to chat about PR trends post COVID, including what PR clients are currently buying, the resurgence of corporate PR and whether there's a tension between integrated communications and the benefits of skill specialisation in public relations. It's the return of the champion to the PRmoment Podcast—Scott's first podcast he did with us remains our most listened to podcast ever! Do make sure you've taken a look at the PRCA's National Conference which is a face to face event and you can also watch it on a livestream if you prefer. It's a full day conference in London on 8 July exploring communication and influence in a post-pandemic world. Speakers include communications leaders from the likes of Google and IKEA, as well as big names including Alastair Campbell and Sophie Morgan.Tickets available on the PRCA websiteIf you haven't entered yet and you specialise in creative public relations work, the final deadline for The Creative Moment Awards is 8 July. Here's a summary of what Scott and I discussed:2 mins As of now, which parts of PR are growing and which bits are still a bit slow? 2.30 mins How ESG and purpose are seeing a lot of investment currently, alongside business transformation, especially when related to employee engagement and employee brand.3.30 mins How BCW sees clear evidence that brand marketing spend is ”coming back”.5.30 mins What type of ESG work is BCW working on?7.00 mins Why COVID was the catalyst to increasing PRs importance to organisations.14 mins Is the renaissance of corporate counsel permanent?16 mins Do clients see earned media as more valuable than ever?18.30 mins Thinking about the path to integration, which agencies do you think will win? 20.30 mins How the challenge for the holding companies “is to be able to deliver quality at scale” but also have “passionate specialists” within their businesses.25.30 mins How will the look, feel and skill-set of PR firms post-COVID be different to pre-COVID?26.30 mins Why Scott is concerned about the level of demand for PR talent at the moment - “talent wars are fierce right now!”29.30 mins To what extent have most PR firms already lost office capacity, meaning that people working 5 days a week in the office is now impossible because the office capacity is no longer there?32 mins When assessing the hybrid working policy, what are the factors in that decision-making process?36 mins The merger of Burson and Cohn & Wolfe to form BCW was 3 years ago. Looking back, what were the lessons on how to merge a big global PR firm successfully?40 mins Globally, how have different regions fared since the start of COVID? For my regular readers & listeners I know I may sound like a broken record at this point, but when it comes to forging your career path in any field it comes down to the same basic components: You need to clearly identify the right ladder to climb. You need to focus on becoming awesome at your craft. You need to make sure the right people know you are awesome at your craft. Having natural talent definitely doesn’t hurt, but talent alone doesn’t automatically entitle you to success. And working on projects you love never happens because of my least favorite word - “luck.” The difference between success and failure almost always comes down to perseverance, consistency, and building solid relationships. Today I’d like to add one additional ingredient that is often overlooked (but is the hidden superpower for longevity as a creative professional). That ingredient is humility. My guest today is a multiple award winning, seasoned film and television editor, Scott Powell, ACE, who is best known for his work on 9 seasons of the Fox series 24 where he was awarded 5 Emmy nominations, 3 American Cinema Editors (Eddie) nominations, and 2 wins. He has since worked on Prison Break, Person of Interest, The Chi, The Orville, and most recently, Queen of the South. But to hear him talk about his career path he's about as humble as they come. Despite believing that “you need to be an a**hole to make it to the top in Hollywood because nice guys finish last,” humility is a valuable asset in any career path you will pursue. In our conversation you'll hear why it's so important to cultivate humility in your own life and the relationships you build throughout your career and how to better do so. Like me, Scott is a natural mentor who has helped many land their dream gigs and offers words to anyone hoping to climb the ladder and become a successful editor in network & streaming television. From how to handle a default due to foreclosure and still make money, to a property that doubles in value and your return, as the lender, will be. Nick goes into great detail as he starts with the note's market and goes through all the scenarios and the financials for each one. Basically, this podcast tells you everything you need to know to either up your note investing game or just get started. Real estate is a cyclical business, property values go up and down, but it doesn't matter what the market is doing when you invest in notes. The other benefit of note investing is there are multiple ways to make money, and you can help people who can't get a traditional loan become homeowners. And, let's not even get started about the #1 benefit of not having to deal with tenant issues. You are going to learn from the best, as my guest Nick Legamaro, also known as "The Note Guy," has been note investing for almost 20 years. He focuses on providing his clients with high-yield, low-risk, turn-key real estate investment notes, secured with carefully selected residential properties throughout the United States. He is here to help you become a successful note investor. Understanding how a note deal works when the property doubles in value Why it doesn't matter if a buyer defaults on a loan How to keep your asset and resell it if the borrower defaults due to foreclosure At the end of the day, you can't predict the future, but you can mitigate your risk Understanding the most significant challenges and risk for note buyers (fraud) Doing your due diligence on finding and securing a clean note $26B seller financing notes are made through mom and pop investors Why you don't have to do traditional underwriting for 3 mortgage notes What does a mortgage servicer do for you, and why it's important Answering FAQs on note investing How to leverage LTV (loan to value) so you and the borrower can succeed Understanding Investment to value (loan to cost) Why borrowers will pay a 10% interest rate to a private lender Why big banks are going to make it tougher to get a traditional loan Using a mortgage servicer as a third-party verification which validates your word Notes are tradeable and liquid and how to sell for cash at a maximum value Understanding the foreclosure process, which is different for different states The benefits of note investing and the multiple ways you can make money Using your retirement money to invest in notes and have more when you retire Scott talks about one of his note deals How Nick helps people create note deals Get in Touch with Nick To Learn More...
Inspiring Trust by Owning Your Mess What You Will Learn: How Scott’s varied career path taught him key lessons about humility in leadership that served as the backbone of his newest bestselling book Why Scott titled his book “Management Mess”, and why he wanted to write a different kind of leadership book that teaches people to own their mess Why Scott’s eagerness to talk about his own struggles and to demonstrate vulnerability and humility are key pieces of his book Why humility in leadership can be a powerful trait for any business leader, allowing you to focus on what is right rather than your desire to be right Why Scott believes “trustworthy leaders declare their intent”, building trust and creating clarity through their behavior How to offer a genuine apology that builds trust, doesn’t make excuses, and demonstrates that you recognize the mistake you’ve made and what you need to do to correct it Why leaders are responsible for the culture they create in their business, and how Scott defines “coaching continuously” Why a leader’s job is to build capability in their team members, and why continuous coaching is a powerful way to show that you love your people Why whether your team members stay or leave after the pandemic will be determined by how you treat them during the crisis Why a great leader makes commitments they can promise and keeps the commitments they make, and why it takes courage to say no Inspiring Trust by Owning Your Mess Humility is a difficult trait to demonstrate, because many people equate showing vulnerability to showing weakness. However, humility in leadership can be a powerful part of your company culture, because it can build trust and can open the door for your employees to express their own vulnerability. Scott Miller is a 25-year associate of FranklinCovey and serves as the executive vice president of thought leadership, as well as being a bestselling author and the host of the world’s largest and fastest growing podcast devoted to leadership development, On Leadership. Scott recently appeared as a guest on the Onward Nation podcast, where he discussed how showing humility in leadership can build trust, empower your employees, and become a key part of your company’s culture. Showing humility in leadership Mirriam-Webster defines humility as: “freedom from pride or arrogance, the quality or state of being humble”. As Scott Miller defines it, humility in leadership means “owning your mess” and recognizing that you sometimes make mistakes. Humility is an important component of trust, whether with your clients or with your internal team members. When you make a mistake, Scott says it is important to apologize in the right way and use the right language. It means letting your guard down, not trying to protect yourself or make excuses, and being clear in how you will change your behavior going forward. Showing humility can be uncomfortable, but your authenticity goes a long way in repairing hurt relationships and can show that your word can be relied on. Because your team looks to you as their leader to set the culture of your company, this level of trust can have a ripple effect throughout your organization. Continuous coaching Part of showing humility in leadership is in coaching continuously, and in the right way. It’s about being clear in your expectations, praising your team when they achieve their goals, and reinforcing positive behaviors. You shouldn’t wait until there’s a problem; instead, you should always be coaching your team. Your leadership guides your team, and continuous coaching can help motivate your team to big wins while identifying areas where you can improve. Coaching should be an ongoing, interactive process that strengthens your culture and the effectiveness of everyone on the team. As the lines we have drawn to separate ourselves from others seem to be hardening, will we ever get to a place where we all get along? There may not be a silver bullet to reach a place of inclusion and equity, but this does not mean it is not possible. Today's guest, Scott Hoesman, Founder of inQuest Consulting, is doing the work to help teams create a more empathetic and inclusive culture. With feelings of anger, exclusion, and fear at an all-time high, Scott helps companies understand difference and find common humanity. In this episode, we talk about what inclusivity means and why we need to move past the idea that when we bring people in, we will lose something. Not only is this not true, but viewing people who are different from us through a fear-based lens only entrenches divisions further. We discuss why topics of inclusion and equity are so difficult for people to talk about, where Scott encourages everyone – yes, even the most liberal among us – to interrogate how they live the value of inclusivity. Rather than villainizing one group, we have to turn inward, open our hearts and minds, and interrogate our own biases. Even though we are in a difficult period of history, Scott remains optimistic that we will be able to get back to civil discourse and a society of openness and learning. Key Points From This Episode: Not getting along is part of the human experience, but it is something we need to lean into. Our scarcity mindset – that does in some ways protect us – pits us up against one another. Inclusion does not mean there will be fewer resources for you. Why Scott is both proud and not satisfied with the work inQuest has done. Some of the common themes that Scott has noticed from his work. Understanding that there will be backlash when talking about difficult topics openly. The power of naming your discomfort when trying to talk to people about topics where your knowledge is limited You cannot put the burden of your education on other people – It is your responsibility. How geographical and social context influences Scott’s work around inclusion. The power of proximity: Why being exposed to different people breaks down barriers. Nature versus nurture: Scott’s take on whether empathy is innate or learned. Why Scott believes the topic of inclusivity is particularly difficult for people to grapple with. How Scott’s 40th birthday party made him reflect on how he lived his professional values in his personal life. Hear how Scott helps people to see how diverse their social and professional circles are. We have made it socially acceptable to discriminate based on visible and invisible difference. Social media can further polarize or unite us depending on how we use it. Hear Scott’s take on cancel culture and why the argument is so nuanced. Why – even though we are facing such a hard time – Scott is still so optimistic. The worry Scott has about us becoming complacent with these issues. The history of inclusive consulting as a profession and how it has evolved over time. What the role of government is in creating and enabling inclusive and equitable practices. It is not only conservative people who need to open their minds; liberals do as well. We need to get back to a place of civil discourse where we can disagree without villainization. Some real estate investments are riskier than others, especially in an economic downturn. Class A multifamily developers, for example, are likely to lose their tenant base in a recession. So, what can developers do to forecast what the world will look like at the end of a build cycle and make decisions accordingly? And what can we ALL learn from this approach that will help us prosper through multiple market cycles? Scott Choppin is the Founder of Urban Pacific, a real estate development company out of Long Beach, California. With 35-plus years of experience in the business, Scott has led the development of nearly 1,700 units throughout the Western United States. He is also responsible for a recent innovation known as Urban Town House, a middle-income, multigenerational housing product that serves urban families in California. Scott’s work has been featured in Forbes, The Los Angeles Times and Builder Magazine, among many other media publications. On this episode of Apartment Building Investing, Scott joins me to explain how he got his start working for a large development firm, describing the wide range of skills and knowledge he picked up before striking out on his own. He discusses how he leveraged joint venture partnerships in the early days of Urban Pacific, what the company is doing to mitigate risk in a recession, and why he is optimistic about the current circumstances. Listen in for Scott’s insight on transitioning from a W-2 to real estate development and find out what YOU can do to survive and thrive in an economic downturn. When Scott Bossman stumbled into the world of land investing, he had no experience in real estate or business. He was working 40-50 hours a week as a physical therapist, but looking for a way to spend more time with his family. In his search for passive income options, he ran across one of Mark Podolsky's podcasts and was hooked on the idea of raw land flipping as the ideal passive income model, since it avoids “the 3 T's” of traditional real estate investing (tenants, toilets, and termites). Under Mark's guidance at TheLandGeek.com, Scott learned how to seek out viable prospects for raw land deals, make the right offers, close deals (often for pennies on the dollar), then sell those same parcels to interested buyers. Scott and his wife, Erin, have been investing in raw land for 4 years. Scott was able to replace his income as a Physical Therapist in just 2 years, and he quit his job in 3 years. He now works as a PT just 1-2 afternoons a week, and he enjoys the luxury of working at home in his land business. Scott and Erin's business has enabled them to spend more time with their 4 sons and to experience a degree of financial security that they would never have dreamed possible. Scott is now a member of the Land Geek team, and he is passionate about sharing what he's learned to inspire others to pursue their dreams of financial freedom through raw land investing. What you'll learn about in this episode: How Scott got started with real estate by listening to Mark Podolsky's podcast, and how he rapidly found success How Scott made the decision to go into full time land investing after just three years after his first deal Why Scott got over his apprehension and made the leap to full time investing, and how this has had a positive impact on his home life with his wife and four kids How Scott uses direct mail to find investment land and can turn smaller, low value land deals into big profits How Scott and his team have built a list of leads by contacting counties for lists of tax delinquent properties before they go to tax auction How developing strong relationships and being consistent have created great investment opportunities for Scott, and how the number of deals he does has continued to grow What mistakes Scott has made over the course of his career, and how he has learned from those mistakes How Scott uses systems and automation to minimize his effort while maximizing the number of deals he can do, and how Virtual Assistants have become a big part of his business Why going full time with his investing career has freed Scott up to spend more time with his family Why raw land investing can create an incredible passive income stream with low effort and fewer headaches than other real estate niches Resources: Smart Real Estate Coach podcast episode 17 with Mark Podolksy: https://smartrealestatecoachpodcast.com/podcasts/mark-podolsky/ Website: www.smartrealestatecoach.com/landgeek Website: https://www.thelandgeek.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/scott-bossman-969631110/ Scott Bossman's Recommended Reading List: Cashflow Quadrant by Robert T. It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving, and if you’re anything like me, you’re thinking about one thing right now… Pizza. Ok, maybe I'm the only one. Before the holiday, I saw an incredible campaign by the folks at MOD Pizza. It’s their Spreading MODness initiative, a bold, anthemic vision statement in which they declare, “This is not a pizza place. This is a people place.” In the campaign it’s quickly apparent that this brand is more than a pizza company, they’re a platform for greater good. And while these aspirational campaigns can sometimes come off a little cheesy (pizza joke!), this one just works. The reason? Because MOD has been proving they’re the real deal since day one. This week, we revisit an interview with MOD Pizza co-founder and CEO Scott Svenson. Scott and his wife and co-founder Ally see MOD as more than just a pizza chain, and a company as more than just a money-making enterprise. They call the approach “enlightened capitalism.” Of course it doesn’t hurt that their pizza happens to also be amazing. MOD is a pioneer in the fast-casual pizza concept, and they’ve been the fastest growing restaurant chain in the U.S. for the past four years. Key Takeaways Scott explains the importance of believing that human beings are inherently good, and how expectations often shape outcomes. Why even though pizza is all that MOD sells, but it’s actually not the most important thing in MOD’s business. Why when setting up guidelines for your team members, its all about creating "wide boulevards and high curbs." Why Scott and his wife Ally founded MOD Pizza under the banner of "enlightened capitalism." The surprising way that money can buy happiness (hint: it’s not how you think).
