On the 9th of June, 1727, the Dutch East India Company vessel Zeewijk wrecked on Half Moon Reef of the Houtman Abrolhos, off the coast of Western Australia. The ship was not immediately destroyed and many of the ship's supplies were salvaged and brought to a small nearby coral island, later named Gun Island. After 9 months stranded on the island, the remaining survivors remarkably built a boat out of the scrap of the Zeewijk and sailed over 1600 miles to the Dutch settlement of Batavia on the island of Java. Author and historian Dr. Howard Gray joins me once again, to bring his expert knowledge of the history of Western Australia and the Houtman Abrolhos archipelago. Dr. Gray has written several books, including Lucretia's Batavia Diary, and you can find his publications at Westralian Books, https://www.westralianbooks.com.au. Jeronimus Cornelisz and his fellow mutineers begin their reign of terror on the other survivors of the Batavia shipwreck. Cornelisz orders the senseless murders of countless survivors. Francisco Pelsaert, Ariaen Jacobsz and over 40 others reach the Dutch settlement of Batavia on the island of Java in the longboat, and Pelsaert is dispatched with a rescue ship to recover survivors and cargo. Meanwhile Cornelisz launches attacks on Wiebbe Hayes and his soldiers on West Wallabi Island. Pelsaert arrives just in time during a pitched battle. Cornelisz and the mutineers are captured, and the interrogations begin. Helpful maps of Houtman's Abrolhos are in this episode's show notes, for a better idea of the layout of the islands and the distances involved. The Schipper, Ariaen Jacobs had just been publicly dressed down in front of the crew for his drunken rowdiness, and both Jacobsz and Jeronimus Cornelisz begin planning a mutiny. As the ship races across the Indian Ocean, they run into an unexpected archipelago of coral islands, the Houtman's Abrolhos, off the coast of Western Australia. The Batavia is wrecked, and those on board struggle to make it to dry land. Pelsaert and Jacobsz depart for Java in the longboat to get help, and Cornelisz makes his move and assumes command of the survivors. Myriam Hadnes is the host of the Workshops Work podcast, where she talks to guests about facilitation and collaboration. We also talk about the role the podcast has taken in developing her business and community, sponsor breaks and how she uses a visual map to guide people into her show. Workshops Work was part of her business communication, and a year and a half into her podcast, she actually changed the name of her business to match the podcast. Her first guest was her mentor, who also introduced Myriam to workshops. She then reached out to her close community and friends. The show structure has become freer now - Myriam has gone from scripting all her questions and following the script, to sending some questions through to give "the illusion of preparation" and be able to follow the conversation. 17.50 minsThrough podcasting, Myriam has also learned "the art of taking space", a concept she came across through improv. By being vulnerable and sharing her own perspective, she supports her guest helping them to play with the content, instead of being responsible for creating the content for the episode. Being of service to the other person is also something that comes from facilitation. Myriam edited the first 25 episodes herself, which is important to do to get a real sense of your own presence and the conversation dynamics. "We don't want a thinking break to be confused with a tech issue." She used to take 4 hours per hour of episode. 27.30 minsWhen conversations are long, the episodes are split into two shows, as Myriam asked her audience about their preferred length - they said 40 minutes and that it would be good for longer episodes to be split into two. This shows there's all kind of preferences, and it's worth asking your audience. 32.36 minsA few years ago, Myriam went to a conference and was so dissatisfied that eventually, after being prompted by a guest, she set up her own conference. She invited her guests to do something at an event, where they would do something that had never done before. The first 24 hour festival took place in November 2020, and now it's evolved into this whole thing, the Never Done Before community and events: https://neverdonebefore.org/40.50minsMyriam talks about how she decided to get her listeners used to "sponsors breaks" since the first episode so that, if at some point she could sell sponsorship onto the show, the audience would already be used to it.46.50 minsMyriam has a wonderful visual map on Mural for her episodes. You can find it here: https://bit.ly/podcast-map ,  Finally, Myriam talks about what she likes best about having her show: those moments when her and the guest forget that they are recording a show and have memorable, or incredibly fun conversations. Some of her favourite moments are her conversation with Meg Bolger, and Howard Gray. You can connect with Myriam on LinkedIn, and also check out her site Workshops Work. If you want to hear from me (Pilar) in between episodes, you can sign up to the Adventures in Podcasting newsletter here: If you're thinking of starting your own podcasting adventure, I recommend Buzzsprout as host - click here for my affiliate link, which also gets you a little discount, and Riverside FM for recording, which you can access through this other affiliate link.

The company focuses on learning, discovery, and community-based projects. Wavetable helps brands, influencers, and IP owners uniquely leverage their connection to their fans and followers by developing live, community-driven learning experiences. Edutainment is a portmanteau of the word education and entertainment. The word describes educational resources and methods that also have an entertaining aspect. Recent trends like gamification, Web 3.0, and community may positively impact the spread of edutainment. Keeping your work engaging requires you to use different formats and modes for your activities and to switch between them regularly. To connect with members and their stories without getting too personal, you have to create conditions where people feel that they can enroll in the activity and conversation. Also, find common ground and use inclusive language for the other person.

The song, "Howard Gray," ended up becoming somewhat of a catalyst for anti-bullying campaigns all across the country. Today, Kenny tells the story of the song, and how that bullied kid was more God-like than anyone could have guessed. Creativity is the string that weaves through most (if not all) facets of life. As a facilitator, you design workshops that bring people together around a specific theme. If you think about it, workshops are a lot like parties, and every party needs good music. In many ways, facilitators are similar to DJs because they both create an experience for a group of people in hopes that it moves them from the mental place they were before to the new and refreshed place they are now.I wanted to explore the analogy of designing workshops like a mixtape further, so I invited Howard Gray onto workshops work. Howard's work focuses on “amplifying creative people and businesses to increase discovery, access, connection, and opportunity.” Howard and I talked about what facilitators can learn from DJs about workshop design to create even better workshops that participants will remember for a lifetime.Find out about:What you can learn about workshop design and facilitation from a DJHow to design a workshop like a mixtapeWhy you should pre-plan your workshops but be open to adjusting quickly when necessaryWhy you need to focus on the experience you create for participantsWhat makes a great mixtape and how you can translate that to a fantastic workshop designHow the movie storyboarding exercise worksHow to get better at “reading the room”Don't miss the next show: Subscribe to the show with your favourite podcast player.Click here to download the free 1-page summaryFeeling inspired by the conversation in this episode? Browsing the UK calendar had failed to cough up any events which coincided with a free weekend, but on the French part of the ADLG forum I spotted one event on a very specific weekend in November, and a last-minute plan suddenly fell into place... Avignon! Air Miles subsidized the international logistics, Avis loyalty points chipped in with a gallic roller-skate-sized hire car and a list I'd already used saw a very small but relatively freshly painted Assyrian army packed into the world's smallest tin for a hand-luggage-only travel plan involving the smallest rucksack in my collection. 5 games later and there French meta has been well and truly tested to wine, beer, cheese and obscure local spirits type destruction in 5 games of mixed success for the Lions of Assyria.
