Welcome to Episode 60! In this very special recording we celebrate ten years of 76 Small Rooms, in a live audience recording at Objectspace Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Deftly compered by Jeremy, the team were joined by a brilliant panel made up of Objectspace director Kim Paton; Matakohe Architecture + Urbanism's Jade Kake; and our very first guest back in 2015 - architect and founder of RTA Studio Rich Naish. We discussed two questions: how has design in Aotearoa New Zealand changed in the last decade? And what changes can we hope for in the decade ahead? Huge thanks and aroha to Objectspace for hosting this kōrero, and their ongoing support of design and creativity in Aotearoa. Special thanks to those who attended this celebration, and our gratitude to Te Aihe Butler, who recorded and mixed this live episode. Theme Music: The Cosmic Wheels Cover photo: Cameron Law

This two-episode podcast examines the importance of effective, proactive multi-agency collaboration in adolescent forensic mental health settings. In this discussion, Dr James Gardiner and Dr Enys Delmage cover common presentations and highlight best practices across various environments, including inpatient services, community-based care and in-reach programs to youth justice residences (secure units operated by Oranga Tamariki, where some children remanded by the Youth or High Courts may be placed). This series introduces key topics that will be explored in greater detail at the upcoming RANZCP Section of Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry Conference held in March 2025, Wellington. This podcast will be valuable for professionals working in adolescent forensic settings or those involved with children in the justice system.   Dr James Gardiner is a forensic psychiatrist working at Tū Māia, formerly known as Regional Youth Forensic Services in Auckland.  Most of his work involves delivering in-reach mental health care to the two youth justice residences in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.  James has worked as an in-reach psychiatrist in various correctional settings for around 20 years, with the last 10 years working with young people. Dr Enys Delmage is an adolescent forensic psychiatrist working at Ngā Taiohi, a secure inpatient service for young people in Porirua, Wellington. With a specific interest in the interface between mental health and the law in relation to young people, his research primarily explores the international landscape of the minimum age of criminal responsibility. References: UN Office on Drugs and Crime's International Homicide Statistics database World Bank International Crime Rates and Statistics 2000-2025 dataTopic suggestion:If you have a topic suggestion or would like to participate in a future episode of Psych Matters, we'd love to hear from you. Please contact us by email at: psychmatters.feedback@ranzcp.orgDisclaimer:This podcast is provided to you for information purposes only and to provide a broad public understanding of various mental health topics. Volcano city virtual field trip Travel to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland to discover more about the fiery past of Auckland's Volcanic Field Ngā Tapuwae-o-Mataoho. There are over 50 volcanoes within the Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF). The AVF has been active for around 200,000 years. The most recent and largest volcano is Rangitoto, created around 600 years ago from at least two eruptions. As Māori became established in Aotearoa New Zealand, the maunga were valued as natural places for pā, with their rich volcanic soils and their unique form and height for easy defence. Evidence of a hot magma source deep beneath Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland suggests there could potentially be an eruption in the future. Before a new eruption starts, scientists will be using forecasting models to try to predict when and where a new volcano will appear. Objective To find out how large parts of the city would be affected by the likely next eruption, and how to be prepared for the impacts of volcanic activity. Key learning Explore science and mātauranga behind the Auckland Volcanic Field Ngā Tapuwae-o-Mataoho. Look at evidence of past volcanic eruptions. Hear stories about volcanoes from mana whenua. Visit Rangitoto, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland's youngest and largest volcano. Explore the inside of a lava cave. Investigate the impacts of a future eruption in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. This week I attended a BRANZ seminar titled 'Building for our changing climate'. Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland was the last stop on the BRANZ seminar tour of the country and it's encouraging to think that rooms of designers, builders, product suppliers, building officials and others, were interested enough in this topic to take four hours out of their week.  A key takeaway is that we're not prepared. We're already handicapped by having insufficient standards in our building code to deal with our current climate. With the forecast being 'warmer and wetter', the situation is set to get worse. https://homestylegreen.com/?p=5936

Nau mai haere mai - Welcome to a session from the Reading Room of Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero, Central City Library, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. In this podcast, we are delighted to share the recording of Greg Doran's visit to the Auckland First Folio in June 2023. Greg Doran, artistic director emeritus of the Royal Shakespeare Company is on a tour of surviving first folios sponsored by the British Council. https://www.britishcouncil.org.nz He comes to us after visiting First Folios in Japan and most recently Sydney, at the State Library of New South Wales. Next stop Cape Town. Our First Folio has travelled the furthest from the Print House in London, some 11,386 miles in fact. The Folio has had an active life, most recently getting some attention from David Ashman, our Preservation Manager. The Folio can be handled more easily post-treatment. The tangible evidence of the preservation treatment (including leather shavings and “gutter sweeping”) is now stored in a bespoke archival box with the Folio itself. In this recording, Greg meets our unique annotated Folio and talks with an interested party – including retired rare books librarian Georgia Prince who curated the exhibition Shakespeare in his time which featured 17th century rare books from the Heritage Collections. We also had a moment with the Shakespeare bronze, affectionately referred to as the ‘Beadle bust' – named for the sculptor Paul Beadle. The bust entered stage left during our discussion – returning to its plinth after a stint on the Ground Floor of our busy public library. Let's give Greg the floor to share his close reading! In this podcast, Dr Lucy Mackintosh discusses aspects of her recently published book, Shifting Grounds: Deep Histories of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland (Bridget Williams Books, 2021), which explores the layered histories embedded in three landscapes in the city. Starting with rocks, lava flows, a grassy paddock, the remains of a garden, the site of a cottage, or a monument, the book examines the histories that unfolded in these places and connects them with the broader historical context of the city, the nation and the world. Lucy's talk considers how histories told from particular places, at particular moments of time, opens up new stories and perspectives that can change the way we currently tend to think about the past and the present in urban spaces. My partner and I reflect on their comments further and share some thoughts about accessing and living in these different places. We conclude with some observations about inequity between these places and differing societal values and culture(s).

For this OoOo Interview I got to sit in my mother's new waterfront apartment in downtown Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and explore a few aspects of her life that intrigue me. There is no person alive that won't find SOMETHING interesting in what we talk on. My mother got to chill with Bob Marley and the Wailers, she's a pioneer of Second Life, a big time advocate for unlimited access to great resources for education no matter where you are in the world, loves to talk about testicles in the virtual reality space, has a friend who bravely delves into America's darkest minds (extreme right wing hate groups), and without hesitance gave up all her familiarity and her house to shift to the other side of the world to the land of the long white cloud just to save her eldest child.
