What does it take to build trust in an organization where change is constant? In this episode of Career Can Do, Mary Ann Faremouth discusses this with Benedikt Oehmen, who shares a fresh perspective on leadership dynamics in fast-moving environments. Benedikt speaks candidly about the importance of transparency and integrity, emphasizing, "Trust isn't something you ask for; it's something you earn, consistently." Benedikt also goes into the concept of vulnerability in leadership, which he believes is often misunderstood. He says, "Being vulnerable isn't about exposing weaknesses; it's about showing your team that you're human, too." This vulnerability, combined with a clear vision, is what helps leaders connect with their teams on a deeper level, encouraging innovation and resilience in times of uncertainty. He argues that when leaders embrace this mindset, they not only build stronger relationships but also create an environment where people feel safe to take risks and grow. We explore his journey of cultivating trust through open communication and a shared sense of purpose. He reflects on the challenges leaders face in balancing short-term demands with long-term vision, offering insights on how to create a culture where people feel empowered to speak up. Benedikt explains how fostering a culture of accountability and clarity can transform not only teams but entire organizations. How does vulnerability fit into leadership? Being vulnerable as a leader is tricky, but there's a clear difference between being vulnerable and leading with vulnerability. In today's Leadership Spark, I share how my own journey with panic attacks reshaped my understanding of vulnerability. Through interviews with executives, I found that while vulnerability in personal life is crucial, in the workplace it's a different story. Many executives ask if they should project unwavering confidence, or share their struggles? The answer is both! The key is not just exposing your weaknesses but demonstrating how you're closing the gaps—combining vulnerability with action, as shown by examples from leaders like Fleetwood Grobler and Hollis Harris. Vulnerability alone can be risky, but combine it with action, and you've got leadership gold. I also share stories from top executives that illustrate how leading with vulnerability makes all the difference in building trust and resilience.   ________________ Start your day with the world's top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. In this compelling episode of the podcast, we delve into the intricate relationship between addiction and mental health, uncovering insights into recovery and the power that comes from vulnerable leadership. Titled "Navigating Addiction and Mental Health: Insights into Recovery and the Power of Vulnerable Leadership," the episode brings forth a multi-dimensional discussion that not only educates but also inspires. The conversation kicks off with an apology for technical issues with a webcam, quickly moving to introduce the work of Sofros Recovery, a treatment center in Northeast Florida that specializes in Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). The episode casts a light on the complexities of addiction, not just as a physical dependency, but as a symptom of deeper underlying issues such as trauma, mental, emotional, or relational struggles. It delves into the biological aspects of addiction, how it disrupts homeostasis, and the body's natural chemical balances, emphasizing the importance of coping mechanisms, healthy communication, and boundary-setting to improve one's overall quality of life and relationships. As the episode progresses, it explores the troubling trend of marijuana misuse among youth and its potential to cause psychosis, as well as the indiscriminate reach of addiction across various demographics. The discussion moves to the societal shift towards openness regarding mental health struggles and the importance of vulnerability and support systems in combating addiction. The narrative reinforces the therapeutic might of sharing personal battles with transparency, promoting the healing that comes from discussing challenges openly. A particularly insightful section of the episode focuses on leadership. It argues that effective leadership requires embracing one's own vulnerabilities, which in turn fosters trust and safety within teams. This segues into a broader discussion on the normalization of alcohol in society and how it has evolved from a social lubricant to a means of escapism, linking it to the rise in vulnerability issues. The episode concludes by thanking the guest for the powerful insights shared and reminding leaders of their influential role in nurturing an environment where honesty is met with compassion. It serves as a reminder of the supportive role leaders can play in the well-being of their community. The episode is rich with transcript samples from key chapters, offering a taste of the deep, authentic conversations that occur throughout. From discussing the most common types of addiction to challenging the ingredients of addiction like secrecy, isolation, avoidance, and shame, the episode provides listeners with a wealth of knowledge and strategies to foster recovery. Listeners will come away from this episode with a deeper understanding of addiction and mental health, the role of leadership in recovery, and the importance of creating a supportive community that encourages openness and vulnerability. It is an invitation to reflect on the strength found in communal openness, the pathways to wellness, and the indispensable role of authentic leadership in the fight against addiction. He's the author of the new book, Leading With Vulnerability: How to Unlock Your Greatest Superpower to Transform Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization. Most of us have heard that we should show vulnerability, but we don't necessary know how to do this in the workplace. In addition, many leaders mistakenly show vulnerability without connecting it back to leadership. In this episode, Jacob and I explore where leaders go wrong, discuss how to do better, and demonstrate exactly what real vulnerability sounds like. Key Points Vulnerability + Leadership = Vulnerable Leadership. While this equation may seem obvious, many leaders mistakingly lean into vulnerability without also articulating leadership. Vulnerability without leadership can land awkwardly and potentially calls to question your credibility as a leader. Go beyond just admitting a mistake; share what was learned from that mistake. In the same way, talk about personal challenges for the purpose of connecting, creating trust, and relating to others. Ask yourself this question as a starting point for ensuring you are also leading: “What's my reason for sharing what I'm about to share?” Vulnerability for leaders is not the same as it is for everybody else. Lauren Ambeau is an associate superintendent and during this conversation, she and George Couros talk about authenticity and leadership. Couros reflects on how we talk about authenticity but then social media is often an inauthentic space where people gravitate toward content that is curated. Couros shares how he struggles with this and questions how can allow for more authenticity. During this episode, he and Ambeau talk about how not just the highlights, but the entire story, should be shared and reflected upon. Quotes: "Leadership has never been about position or title...trust and respect is earned." - Lauren Ambeau "Vulnerable, to me, means leaders that are willing to stand up and say, 'We are trying to reimagine education...as leaders, we may not have all the answers on how to get there...'

Our special guest Walt Rakowich delivers mindsets and tools you can use today to help you amply your leadership through transparency and vulnerability. Walt Rakowich is a leadership speaker and former executive of Prologis, a global real estate company that was near collapse when he took over as CEO in 2008. During the economic downturn, the Prologis stock had dropped from over $70 per share to approximately $2 per share in 10 months, making it the third-worst performing company in the S&P 500. After Walt joined as CEO, he quickly implemented a change in culture through transparency, orchestrating a dramatic turnaround and restoring its position in the industry. In addition to speaking to audiences on a range of leadership topics, Walt also serves on a number of corporate and philanthropic boards. Walt attended Penn State where he received his BS in accounting, and then earned his MBA from Harvard Business School. Listen in as Walt shares his ideas on vulnerable leadership, building culture and empowering teams. The Impact Leadership Podcast is brought to you by Cardivera, the leadership development eco-system that helps your grow your people, grow your business and grow your life. Show Notes In this episode you'll learn… Lessons from parents – Appreciate people for who they are Poor leadership causes people to work in silos, close off, stop sharing ideas Leadership: With trust you have everything … without trust you have nothing Transfluence – The path to creating transformative influence by focusing outside of yourself and focusing on the people around you. The key to leadership is transforming your peoples' lives by focusing on them (this is transformative influence) Two biggest obstacles for leaders are fear and pride – leaders' greatest fear is incompetence and the number two fear is vulnerability The antidote to fear is faith and facing it head on (acknowledging it) Leaders must create time alone for thought and contemplation Vulnerability is an act of faith in action especially during crisis and difficult times Leaders job is NOT to always have all the answers – your job is to support the team in developing the answers (they're closest to the issues) During COVID business leaders must be more empathetic and flexible since teams are struggling more now than ever in their personal lives Leaders need to listen more and talk less, especially now Resources: Walt Rakowich Walt Rakowich Website Twitter: @WaltRakowich Transfluence: How to Lead with Transformative Influence in Today's Climates of Change book by Walt Rakowich The Impact Leadership Podcast Cardivera

Today on the podcast, we've got a great conversation with John Lynch, a speaker, author, and former pastor. We loved this conversation. Nothing in it is specifically addressed to churches navigating COVID-19, and that's honestly why we're sharing it today. Instead of piling more on to your crisis-related toolbox, we wanted to share a resource that would speak straight to your heart. And that's exactly what this episode does.John has such a passion for the Church. After 27 years as the teaching pastor at Open Door Fellowship in Phoenix, AZ, John began speaking nationally and authoring many resources. In this episode, he talks a whole lot about living a vulnerable life and the freedom leaders can experience if they take the risk of being fully known. This is a soul-care episode.
