A living symbol of the atrocity of war, she is the founder of The KIM Foundation International, a nonprofit dedicated to providing funds to support the work of international organizations that provide free medical assistance to children who are victims of war, violence, and deprivation. Mrs. Phan Thi has suffered many hardships since that day in 1972 including several years of painful burn therapy, but her spirit has always remained strong. Inspired by the physicians who helped her survive, she decided to become a doctor; but her pre medical studies in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) were interrupted in 1982 when the Vietnamese government removed her from school to act as a “national symbol of the war.” Four years later the government permitted her to continue her studies in Cuba, but health issues put an end to her plans to become a doctor. It was in Cuba that Mrs. Phan Thi met her husband, Toan. They married on September 11, 1992. While on the way back to Havana after their honeymoon in Moscow, the couple defected to Canada during a one-hour layover in Newfoundland, Canada. They now live near Toronto, and Mrs. Phan Thi travels the world as a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Goodwill Ambassador for the Culture of Peace. Kim Phuc Phan Thi has received seven honorary doctorate degrees from universities in Canada, Australia, the United States, and Mexico for her efforts to help children and end world conflict. She is an Honorary Member of Kingston Rotary, an Honorary Member of St. Albert Rotary, a Member of the Advisory Board for the Wheelchair Foundation, an Honorary Member of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, a Member of the Advisory Board of Free Children's Foundation in Canada, and the World Children's Center in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Mrs. Phan Thi is also a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the 2004 "Order of Ontario,” as well as the International Peace Prize presented in Dresden Germany, February 2019. Kim is the author of Fire Road, her personal memoir, which has been translated into ten languages.

In 1923, he sold all of his possessions to finance the publication of his first book, Crepusculario (“Twilight”). He published the volume under the pseudonym “Pablo Neruda” to avoid conflict with his family, who disapproved of his occupation. The following year, he found a publisher for Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada (“Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair”). The book made a celebrity of Neruda, who gave up his studies at the age of twenty to devote himself to his craft. In 1927, Neruda began his long career as a diplomat in the Latin American tradition of honoring poets with diplomatic assignments. After serving as honorary consul in Burma, Neruda was named Chilean consul in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1933. While there, he began a friendship with the visiting Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. After transferring to Madrid later that year, Neruda also met Spanish writer Manuel Altolaguirre. Together, the two men founded a literary review called Caballo verde para la poesîa in 1935. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 interrupted Neruda's poetic and political development. He chronicled the horrendous years which included the execution of García Lorca in Espana en el corazon (1937), published from the war front. Neruda's outspoken sympathy for the loyalist cause during the Spanish Civil War led to his recall from Madrid in 1937. He then moved to Paris and helped settle Spanish republican refugees in Chile.Neruda returned to Chile in 1938 where he renewed his political activity and wrote prolifically. Named Chilean Consul to Mexico in 1939, Neruda left Chile again for four years. Upon returning to Chile in 1943, he was elected to the Senate and joined the Communist Party. When the Chilean government moved to the right, they declared communism illegal and expelled Neruda from the Senate. He went into hiding. During those years he wrote and published Canto general (1950).In 1952 the government withdrew the order to arrest leftist writers and political figures, and Neruda returned to Chile and married Matilde Urrutia, his third wife (his first two marriages, to Maria Antonieta Haagenar Vogelzang and Delia del Carril, both ended in divorce). For the next twenty-one years, he continued a career that integrated private and public concerns and became known as the people's poet. During this time, Neruda received numerous prestigious awards, including the International Peace Prize in 1950, the Lenin Peace Prize and the Stalin Peace Prize in 1953, and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.Diagnosed with cancer while serving a two-year term as ambassador to France, Neruda resigned his position, ending his diplomatic career. On September 23, 1973, just twelve days after the defeat of Chile's democratic regime, the man widely regarded as the greatest Latin American poet since Darío died in Santiago, Chile. Addressing the Primary Wound of Separation The primary wound at the root of social and ecological dysfunction is separation. While ancient humans understood life as a blessing and humanity's health as inextricably tied to the health of the Earth, moderns have come to imagine that we are separate from both the natural world and each other. These expressions of separation have not only led to environmental pillaging and hoarding of resources; they have also led to existential and social isolation, despair, depression, rage, racial prejudice, sexism, religious fundamentalism, war, and genocide. We can bring about social and ecological healing only if we address the primary wound of separation. Reconnecting with Nature is the axis for change. We will never heal without first acknowledging that our current relationship with the natural world is one of power over nature—and then consciously changing from a dominator mentality to one of partnership. Similarly, relationships between perpetrators and victims will not change until one group acknowledges what they have done to the other. Without doing so, victims tend to perpetuate the cycle of violence, becoming oppressors of new victims. An honest encounter with wounding is the only way to deconstruct the prevailing false narratives and create a healthier story. In the late 1990s, Judith Thompson and James O'Dea begin their collaboration in the emergent field of social healing with initial funding from the Fetzer Institute. They created a forum for dialogue around the deeper psychological and social context of human rights violations. They initially gathered thought leaders from around the world to create a framework for addressing worldview change around social healing. They next took their work to Israel, Palestine, Rwanda, and northern Ireland, among other places. They addressed social healing through constellation work, talking circle dialogue, and restorative justice practices, among other modalities. They helped many individuals interrupt the intergenerational transfer of wounds that we had come to expect among war-torn populations suffering from deep historical trauma. While their work was successful, much remains to be done. Amid worldwide simultaneous ecological, social, political, and health crises, James and Judith join us for a discussion of strategies for coping with and transforming historical trauma and wounding into healing. Join us as we take on the challenging but imperative task of addressing Social and Ecological Healing. BIOS James O'Dea has had varied organizational leadership roles as President of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Executive Director of the Seva Foundation and Director of the Washington Office of Amnesty International. James lived in Turkey during civil strife and a coup, and was in Beirut during the Israeli invasion and subsequent massacres in the Sabra Chatilla refugee camps and helped facilitate social healing dialogues in these global hotspots. As lead faculty for the Shift Network's Peace Ambassador Training, he has taught peacebuilding to more than a thousand students from 30 countries. He is a bestselling author of books such as The Conscious Activist, Soul Awakening Practice, and Cultivating Peace. He integrates his teaching and activism with a deep and practical mysticism and the cultivation of compassionate wisdom. He draws upon a rich tapestry of knowledge and storytelling from many cultural and spiritual traditions with impressive direct international experience in human rights and peace work, new science and dialogue practice. Judith Thompson has been engaged in projects promoting social healing for close to four decades, working primarily with survivors of war and political violence. Her research interests have focused on how compassion arises in the process of social healing, and she written and lectured on this topic worldwide. In 1984, Thompson co-founded Children of War, Inc., an award-winning international youth leadership organization that supported the vision and leadership of young activists from 22 war-torn countries. Thompson has also helped to develop social healing programs in Israel/Palestine and Cambodia and, for the past few years, has worked closely with indigenous elders from North, Central, and South America who are seeking to support worldwide social and ecological healing through their traditional ceremonies. Thompson is a longtime board member of the Center for Psychology and Social Change affiliated with Cambridge Hospital, co-chairs the Spirit and Human Rights initiative funded by the Fetzer Institute, and is on the Advisory Board of One by One, Inc., an organization dedicated to bringing second-generation Holocaust survivors together for dialogue and healing. Ms. Thompson was recipient of the Bunting Peace Fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies and the International Peace Prize of the Dolores Kohl Education Foundation. So today I'm joined by Stephen Gillen, and he is the CEO and executive producer of Shooting Stars Events. Recently, he was nominated by the UKs peace ambassador for the 2020 'Sunhak' International Peace Prize. Also Listen to Business Etiquette; with Entrepreneur and CEO Stephen Gillen Episode 61 Nathaniel Schooler 0:39 Stephen Gillen is a globally successful entrepreneur, Stephen Gillen is an award-winning international public speaker and film-maker. He is a successful author, director, and producer. His documentaries have been viewed in over 140 countries worldwide. There has been wide global media coverage on his work and life journey. On the 29th May 2019, Stephen had the great privilege of being nominated by the UK Peace Ambassador for the ‘Sunhak’ International peace prize and works closely on many innovative, global & humanitarian initiatives. One of these is on the board of UniPharma, a global pharmaceutical company which is the exclusive producer/distributor of a new revolutionary medical device, whom Stephen is also Ambassador, that is set to alleviate the suffering of and save hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide in the open wound industry. So we're going to talk about mentoring to start with welcome, Stephen. WARNING — AI Transcriptions Below May Cause Grammatically Correct People Serious Stress and Lack of Sleep! Stephen Gillen 0:44 Hi. Hi. Hi, Nathaniel. Thank you for having me. Yeah. It's a great joy. My pleasure. Nathaniel Schooler 0:50 My pleasure. So where do you start with mentoring? I mean, this is, let's start at the beginning, right? Because there's a bit of confusion, isn't there between mentoring, tutoring, coaching, and that kind of thing? So how would you distinguish between mentors, coaches, and advisors as well? Because they're sort of interlinked? Stephen Gillen 1:12 Yes. I mean, that is a great place to start, you know, is to get the specifics of this, and what is the difference? You know, because this translates really into everything that we do as people in the exchanges and the communication that we have, really, but the roles for this are quite defined. And they're quite specific, you know, in the sense that a mentor really is a long term kind of expert, who would school support and pass on knowledge and expertise to the protege or mentoring in a specific subject. So that would be there. Whereas a coach is more short term and more loosely based array of different stuff, which would be brought into that arena. Nathaniel Schooler 1:57 Okay. So a coach would be more sort of someone who would come into your life and help you get over a specific problem that you might have. Where a mentor is someone more kind of longer term on the whole? That's right. Stephen Gillen 2:11 Yeah, that would be the way to look at it. Nathaniel Schooler 2:13 I've personally, I've had all sorts of different coaches over the years, and, from people who sort of specialize in neuro linguistic programming, you know, all sorts of different people to help me to kind of evolve as an individual, you know what I mean? And it's amazing, the kind of problems that you seem to just absorb in your brain that stop you from achieving things, they just hit you, you know. Stephen Gillen 2:43 Yeah, I mean, look, this is a fascinating subject. And, you know, I have wonderful, wonderful stories about there, in, you know, in the sense, I mean, on my entrepreneurial journey, years ago, I've been, I'm drawn to one story of one of my first mentors. Now, you know, he was aged 40 at the time, you know, and it sold his scaffold in company, him and his partner at the time for 13 million pounds. So they had 50. So this was someone who really done it at a really, you know, early age, and there was a really wonderful person, obviously, very shrewd, and business, you know, and when I walked through that door using years ago, he, you know, he, he, he looked at me, you know, we had a few exchanges,

Nathaniel Schooler 0:39 WARNING — AI Transcriptions Below May Cause Grammatically Correct People Serious Stress and Lack of Sleep! Nathaniel Schooler 0:39 So we're going to talk about, we're going to talk about business etiquette, which I think is a really interesting topic. And this is a tricky subject for me, because we're global now right? So just as an example, my Dad when he used to run the winery, he had the Japanese come around. Because we used to sell rose petal wine in Japan. Okay. To to Mitsukoshi, the top department store chain in Japan. So these guys from Mitsukoshi came to England. And they came to the winery, like eight or nine of these guys. And each one of them bowed to my Dad and handed him a business card, right. Nathaniel Schooler 1:29 My Dad's like, what am I going to do? If I do this wrong....! Then this business card, right? Could be the death of this customer. So they've all they've all given him a business card. So what he did is he got a diary. And he got each business card. And he and he literally just put it right there in this diary. And then he looked at the card, he looked to the person and he and he nodded. And I think he said something in Japanese, he took a note and then he put the card in there. And then he folded that over that page over in his diary. And then he and then he took the next one. Yeah. And he didn't put that away in his pocket, you see, because if he had taken that card and put that in his pocket, it would have been an insult to the Japanese. Right? Yeah. So that's just one example of business etiquette, right. Stephen Gillen 2:18 This is a this is a massive topic. And, of course, you know, the do's and don'ts we could talk about all morning. But that's a really interesting story. But you know, what I take from that in a simple way. Because we have to make things simple. Because look, this is a massive subject. And, you know, we can go into a little bit about CSR, corporate social responsibility, which is a driver for this, you know, because it does affect it, but it kind of comes in, and then it borders on, you know, then there is work, it does it has, it has an influence here. And really, I have noticed it is there. Stephen Gillen 3:01 Maybe not one that you would notice, but it has a kind of funny influence, in a sense, because these practices are really being integrated as society moves forward. I mean, you know, it's about this political correctness is another one. Yeah. Which can be closely. Yes, but this is kind of the same branches of the same tree. Where does it start? On? Where does it end? Really, and it really is ongoing, right. So you know, this word etiquette, there's communication etiquette, there's email etiquette, there's dining etiquette, this all relates to business to know and it goes on and on and on, you know,

In this episode, Dr. Judith Thompson shares some insights on the lens of social healing and its relation to peace building. She comments that “The social healing lens is really a paradigm; it’s a vision that arises basically from the inherent truth of interconnectivity, which is to say it’s a lens of compassion. And I see it as an evolutionary step for us. The older paradigm, the paradigm of separation, which has brought with it a retributive lens, let us say, within the field that I work in, sees and depends upon on some level people being able to separate themselves from the other and not have a sense of relatedness to the experience of the other." She continues: "Compassion arises in the process of social healing because we are able to let go of a sense of rigid self, and often that’s a righteous self that sits in judgment of the other. But when at the point that we are able to say ah I recognize that I too have been a victim, or I too have been a perpetrator, or I too have stood by while others have been harmed. That allows us to recognize that we’re all in this together, and that there’s a communal enterprise. And that’s really what social healing is about." Dr. Thompson has been engaged in projects promoting social healing for over twenty years, working primarily with survivors of war and political violence. As part of her doctoral research for the Union Institute, she convened a three-day dialogue hosted by the Ikeda Center that brought together 25 people from all over the world to explore the question, "How does compassion arise in the process of social healing?" In 1984, Thompson co-founded Children of War, Inc., an award-winning international youth leadership organization that supported the vision and leadership of young activists from 22 war-torn countries. Dr. Thompson has also helped to develop social healing programs in Israel/Palestine and Cambodia and has worked closely with indigenous elders from North, Central, and South America who are seeking to support worldwide social and ecological healing through their traditional ceremonies. Dr. Thompson was recipient of the Bunting Peace Fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies and the International Peace Prize of the Dolores Kohl Education Foundation. The audio from this interview is from a series of video reflections that were posted on the Ikeda Center YouTube page in August of 2011.
