Dr. Nasser is the author of Brothers Apart: Palestinian Citizens of Israel and the Arab World; Professor Dana's new book is entitled To Stand with Palestine: Transnational Resistance and Political Evolution in the United States. In this episode, Lisa and Ann discuss:The role of grades and GPA as a fundamental aspect of college admissionsDifferentiating weighted versus unweighted GPA systems and their significance in the college admissions processThe value of understanding high school profiles and how they influence college application reviewsFinding a balance between academic ambition and emotional well-being in the high school yearsKey Takeaways: Colleges universally prioritize high school transcripts as the core admission criteria, focusing on both the GPA and the rigor of courses taken, as supported by National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) data.A high school profile contextualizes GPA, course availability, and rigor to admissions officers, making it a crucial document for families to review early in high school.Weighted GPAs, which add extra value for advanced classes, offer a clearer picture of academic rigor; students can explore tools like RecalculateMyGPA.com.Striving for academic challenge should be done thoughtfully, aligning with personal strengths and goals to avoid burnout while ensuring well-rounded involvement in extracurriculars. “Colleges don't want kids who just have their nose down in a book. They want kids who are adding to their community and involved in extracurriculars. So that's why I'm really passionate about building that career awareness alongside that self-awareness as early as 10th grade.” – Ann LaFeminaAbout Ann LaFemina: Ann LaFemina is a lifelong educator with extensive experience in college admissions and counseling. Is it true that women are from Venus and men are from Mars? Are men and women more alike or more different? Why do we seem to have totally different ways of communicating with one another, and how can we work together to build happier and healthier relationships?Dr. Ricky Arenson is a dual-trained Endocrinologist and Geriatrician who lives in Perth, Western Australia, with his wife of twenty years and their four children. As the head of a major hospital, working with patients who have reached 100 years of age, Ricky asked them what the secret to their longevity was… surprisingly it wasn't eating acai berries and doing yoga… it was having long-term positive relationships. His outrageously funny yet serious book ‘Women Are Superior to Men' explores why so many couples have the same arguments about how often to have sex, how men don't notice or pick up the mess they leave lying around, and how men communicate in grunts or jokes when their wives are looking for a serious conversation. It's an easy guide to creating and maintaining a magical relationship filled with love, joy, and better (and more frequent) sex.Ricky has helped over 30,000 patients, holds numerous medical awards, and was awarded a lifetime Outstanding Service Award by Royal Perth Hospital. He has also founded several businesses, owns a private medical practice, and is a stand-up comedian.Thank you to BetterHelp, an online therapy platform that has already helped millions, for sponsoring the show. This week we're replaying a classic episode where your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Micha Star Liberty of Liberty Law Office, Inc. (https://libertylaw.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: Award-winning California trial attorney Micha Star Liberty discusses how she successfully advocated for the grieving parents of 24-year-old Amelie Le Moullac after she was fatally struck by a commercial vehicle while riding in a San Francisco bike lane in 2013. A responsible bicyclist, Amelie wore her helmet and stayed in the designated bicycle lane, but neither action prevented her from being run over by a 13,000-ton Daylight Foods, Inc. box truck, which illegally crossed the bike lane to make a sudden right turn. Amelie died from her injuries, including a fractured skull and crushed torso. Micha Star Liberty helped secure key video footage of the crash from a nearby business security camera after the San Francisco Police Department failed to conduct a thorough investigation, which was later revealed to be part of a larger bias against bicyclists. Despite the defense's attempts to blame Amelie and to depict her as a reckless bicyclist, Micha Star Liberty invoked a California Vehicle Code statute, which underscored the fact that Amelie had the right to remain in her bike lane and treat it as a safety zone in the event of a turning vehicle, which trumped the defense's use of a more general statute. In January 2015, a San Francisco jury ruled that Amelie shared no responsibility in her tragic death, found the driver to be at fault and awarded Amelie's parents a total of $4 million in damages. Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents Guest Bio: Micha Star Liberty Micha Star Liberty is the owner of Liberty Law Office, Inc. — a diverse legal practice primarily representing individuals who have suffered a serious injury or abuse, including child sexual abuse. The firm also represents employees who have been discriminated against or harassed in the workplace, and Micha has assisted businesses with finding a common ground when releasing an employee on best terms. Ms. Liberty is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She has held the title of President and Vice President of multiple legal and political organizations, expanding her network of associates and resources, which often helps to expedite the legal process for the greater benefit of her clients. “My clients come to me during a time of tremendous pain, anguish, and often confusion. They need help and a specialized kind of help. Someone to talk to who will listen; someone who can offer confidential protection under the law; someone with trial knowledge who has worked with similar experiences so they know they are not alone. Everyone needs help and compassion during hard times. My calling in life is to be that advocate for my clients, and I'm never one to back down from a fight for what is right.” Ms. Liberty is a frequent lecturer and published author, focusing much of her public speaking on trial practice, discovery techniques, the importance of mentoring, and best practices for opening a law office and law office management. In 2015, the Consumer Attorneys of California — an organization made up of more than 3000 lawyers in California alone — presented her with the Street Fighter of the Year award at their 54th annual convention held at The Palace in San Francisco. Ms. Liberty was granted the award after holding the Contra Costa County School District accountable for a child sexual molestation case in which school officials were aware of the abuse and took no action. Every year since 2005, she's been given the Presidential Award of Merit. In 2005 and 2006 she was presented the Defender of Justice Award and the Outstanding Service Award, respectively. In 2018, she was awarded the Women's Advocate of the Year Award for her hard work on legislation and for prosecuting numerous cases dealing with the #me too era. Ms. Liberty was a contributing author and editor for the following practice guides: California Client Communications Manual, and California Basic Practice Handbook, both published by Continuing Education of the Bar. Today's episode is part three of a four-part series with Speaker Sisterhood club leaders and members. I put this series together for you because I'm always asked how Speaker Sisterhood is different than Toastmasters, why it's only for women, and what you learn if you sign up. On today's show, I interview Jennifer Cummings Hillery, Speaker Sisterhood member and club leader. Jen shares that she originally checked out Speaker Sisterhood because her friend was starting a club in her community and she wanted to see what it was all about. When she arrived, she was surprised by what she found. That was three years ago and she is still a member of that club and has run her own club for over two years. Listen as Jen talks about her fears around showing emotion while speaking and how she deals with that today, what she has learned about practice, why listening is important, and how being part of a supportive community has helped her on her speaking journey. If you'd like to check out Jen's club, you can do so here. We also have a brand new program called Speaker Sisterhood Express and registration is open until February 24th! It's an accelerated public speaking training program you can participate in from the comfort of your own couch. New clubs are launching in March and they are limited to 10 women per club. Learn more about Speaker Sisterhood Express and register here. More about my guest: Jennifer Cummings Hillery is a lawyer, an active volunteer in her community and a published writer. As an attorney, Jennifer was recognized for her writing skills and oral advocacy. After taking a break from the legal world, Jennifer has found great fulfillment volunteering and serving on the boards of various not-for-profit organizations, political campaigns, and as an elected Town Meeting Member. She was recently awarded an "Outstanding Service Award" from her Alma mater, Skidmore College. Her community involvement has solidified her belief that anything is possible when committed, hardworking, thoughtful individuals come together to support a common goal. She is honored that two of her Speaker Sisterhood club speeches are included in the Speaker Sisterhood compilation book, “Secrets of the Sisterhood: 45 Stories of Love, Truth and Power.” Jennifer loves spending time with her family – husband, three children, two cats, and a dog – who constantly remind her of the joy that exists in all the little things in life. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/claim-the-stage-podcast/support
Our guest today is Dr. James Christopher Haney, a conservation biologist, wildlife researcher, and author of more than 250 peer-reviewed journal articles, technical reports, and science summaries. His career trajectory spans the arc of conservation and extinction and we are going to talk about both these topics today. Dr. Haney's latest book, “Woody's Last Laugh: Ivory-billed Woodpecker as Trickster,” features how that bird came to fool our heads for so long, leading us into various mental mistakes due to the high uncertainty over the bird's ultimate fate. In this episode, we discuss this and other ideas, including the "Romeo error," a condition in which we get bird extinctions wrong (thinking that species are dead when they aren't). We discuss the ivory-bill, but also other examples of bird species from around the world (including one or two from India) that went missing for a very long time, but then were re-found. Dr. Haney has delivered 150 research and public speaking engagements to national and international audiences. Haney was a coauthor of the "Top 40 Priorities for Science to Inform U.S. Conservation and Management Policy." For expertise in advising the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, a cross-governmental coalition charged with restoring marine environments of south-central Alaska, he received an Outstanding Contributions as a Peer Reviewer Award in 2000, and an Outstanding Service Award in 2002. In 2010, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service invited him to lead what was at the time the largest-ever vessel survey of marine birds in the Gulf of Mexico in order to help document injuries to wildlife that were caused by the Deepwater Horizon blow-out and oil spill. Following 15 years of interdisciplinary research, Dr. Haney discovered how and why conservation makes faulty decisions in his new book: "Woody's Last Laugh - How the 'Extinct' Ivory-billed Woodpecker Fools Us into Making 53 Thinking Errors"

Developer Alan Cadgene has filed plans with Albemarle County for a mixed-use development to be built on a 1.36 acre property just to the northwest of the redeveloped Woolen Mills factory. The proposal is for a 2,500 square foot manufacturing buildings with 13 dwelling units. The project is being submitted by-right. “[That] means that if the proposed plans meet the minimum requirements of the county’s zoning, site plan, or subdivision ordinances, they must be approved,” reads the public notification for the project. The county’s Comprehensive Plan designates the land as Neighborhood Density Residential which calls for between three and six units per acre. According to the project application, the residential density on the site be 9.55 units per acre. An existing structure on the property would remain. This is within the scope of the county’s Broadway Blueprint planning area. That’s being run by the county’s Economic Development Office. Elsewhere in the county, plans have been filed for 250 units along Rio Road near Four Seasons. Andy Reitelbach is a senior planner with the county. “So the application is called the Heritage on Rio,” Retelbach said. The property is within the jurisdiction of the Places29-Hydraulic Community Advisory Committee, which had a community meeting on a rezoning application for the project on October 18. “Sometimes the current zoning and the future land use designation do not always line up so that is one reason why a property owner may choose to request a rezoning of their property,” Reitelbach said. In this case, the request is to go from R-6 zoning to a customized zone known as a Planned Residential Development. That would allow up to 35 units per acre as well as some commercial uses. The buildings have not been designed, according to attorney Valerie Long with the firm Williams Mullen. The Architectural Review Board will also weigh in on the project as Rio Road is an entrance corridor. “The project is proposing that 15 percent of the rezoned units will be affordable to those making up to 80 percent of the area median income,” Long said. By-right there could be 50 units on the property, so that translates to 15 percent of 200, or 30 units. The Places29-North Community Advisory Committee met on October 14 and one topic was an update on the Brookhill development south of Forest Lakes and north of Polo Grounds Road. Cameron Langille is another planner in Albemarle. (watch the meeting)“Brookhill was rezoned by the Board of Supervisors in 2016,” Langille said. “Brookhill totals 277.5 acres so it is a pretty large project. It’s going to be developed in multiple phases and the rezoning referred to each of those phases as blocks.”Brookhill is a mixed-use development that must have at least 552 residential units and a maximum of 1,550 units. These include apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes. Langille said the developer could have constructed many more under the Comprehensive Plan but opted to go at a lower density. Final approval so far has been granted for 535 total dwelling unitsBlock 1 is the center of the development. “There’s going to be also a public park and a plaza gathering area, and that is going to be the primary focal point for non-residential uses in this project,” Langille said. Some blocks have been approved and constructed, while others are working their way through the review process. Block 8A consists of a 179-bed assisted living facility which is nearing opening. Block 1A and Block 8B consist of multifamily units that look like townhomes but contain more units. A site plan had been submitted for a hockey rink in the town center. “That plan got to the final site plan stage which is basically the last thing they have to do application wise before they get final approval,” Langille said. “We were reviewing that back in 2018 and from what the developer has told me it’s not going to be build in that block any longer. They are still working with the folks who are looking to do that ice rink and they are potentially going to relocate it a little further north on the north side of the town center area.”Allison Wrabel of the Daily Progress reported in February 2020 that the park had been delayed. A group called Friends of the Charlottesville Ice Park had been fundraising for the project. The website for the group has expired. Special announcement of a continuing promo with Ting! By following the DREAM framework to wellness, Dr. Brian Stenzler encourages families of all ages to take control of their lives, improve their wellness, and prioritize chiropractic care. The Five Keys to a Wellness Lifestyle Diet Relaxation Exercise Adjustment Mental Wellness About Dr. Brian Stenzler Dr. Brian Stenzler is the author of "D.R.E.A.M. Wellness: The 5 Keys to Raising Kids for a Lifetime of Physical and Mental Health. He dedicates his professional life to helping families stay healthy and prevent the need for many unnecessary medications and ultimately, missed school and workdays. He guides parents on how to live a wellness lifestyle by avoiding chemical, physical and emotional stressors in and around their households; and how to adapt to the stressors that are unavoidable. As a pediatric and family wellness chiropractor, Dr. Stenzler serves his communities with 3 locations in San Diego. He has served his profession as President of the California Chiropractic Association from 2014-2016, as well as numerous other boards. He currently holds the position of Vice President for the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations. Dr. Stenzler's illustrious 22+ year career has many honors, including New York Chiropractic Council's Chiropractor of the Year, The World Chiropractic Alliance's Outstanding Service Award, The Chiropractic Leadership Alliance's “On Purpose” doctor of the month, 2012 & 2018 Doctor of the Year from the California Chiropractic Association San Diego and the 2015 recipient of their Leadership Award; and he received the California Chiropractic Association's 2019 Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Stenzler travels the world as a guest speaker at conferences and colleges and lectures at numerous businesses, schools, and civic organizations as a wellness expert. He has also been on television and radio shows around the country. Chiropractic Care for Long-Term Wellness Dr. Stenzler joins us by talking about an experience when he was younger that helped him develop his understanding of the human body. In fact, it's not about how you feel about your body, it's about how your body functions. He witnessed someone close to him, who appeared to be the epitome of health pass away due to an undetected heart problem. This set Dr. Stenzler on a mission to find out the difference between health and wellness. His conclusion is that wellness impacts every aspect of our body, including our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. We should do what we can as early as we can to improve our wellness. One of the reasons Dr. Stenzler is such an advocate of chiropractic care is that chiropractic adjustments target your nervous system. Adjustments do more than just bring your back into alignment; adjustments can have benefits everywhere from pain and migraines to your stress levels to even helping with chronic and long-term health issues like asthma and ADHD. DREAM for a Wellness Lifestyle But Dr. Stenzler is also a firm advocate of a healthy diet. And to him, your diet isn't just what you put in your mouth. His list of items to avoid consists of High Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Oils, Artificial Food Colorings, Artificial Sweeteners, and Gossip - yes, gossip. Gossip is as harmful and has as negative an impact on your body as all those other artificial ingredients. Dr. Stenzler explains his approach to wellness using the five key concepts he's shortened to DREAM. Diet, relaxation, exercise, and mental wellness are all essential to focus on. He further explains that being in adjustment comes when you have all other aspects in balance; and that it's also how capable you are of adjusting to change. Finally, Dr. Stenzler talks about stress's impact on the body. Stress can come from so many different aspects of your life, whether physical, mental, environmental, spiritual, or something else entirely. Stress's impact on the body is detrimental to all aspects of your health and he urges you to self-manage your stress levels. Do you have a chiropractor on your healthcare team? I'm a firm believer in the benefit of regular chiropractic adjustments. Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. Quotes “There's not enough consciousness at home. Sometimes I want to look at the parent and tell them to metaphorically or literally look in the mirror. Their kids are a reflection of them and they'll almost always follow the leader. I know that families that live well together will stay well together. That's the first step in longevity.” [8:09] “Wellness is the integration of mind, body, and spirit affecting your visible body parts but also the trillions of cells that make up your entire body. It's the proactive approach that creates physical, mental, social, and spiritual harmony. It's more than how you feel, it determines how you function. Wellness is the lifestyle that will bring you either more or less health, based on the constructive or destructive choices you make throughout that lifetime.” [9:49] “Your nervous system controls everything. Everyone benefits from a fully functioning nervous system. So whether you're a month old, a day old, or a hundred years old, you would benefit the same as everyone else by being checked by a chiropractor to make sure your body is functioning at its optimal level.” [14:58] “Every decision a person makes is ultimately a value clarification. You know someone's values based on what they're doing. What are they spending their money on? What are they spending their time doing? What choices are they making? If their values are not in alignment with what I'm educating them on, that's on them.” [27:32] In This Episode Why it's not about how you feel, but how you function [6:45] The difference between health and wellness [9:30] Why chiropractic care is beneficial [11:15] What your diet consists of outside the food you eat [15:45] What the five keys to a wellness lifestyle are [18:00] Where our stressors can come from [28:30] Links & Resources Get 10% Off Adrenal Calm with Code CALM Get your first copy of Dream Wellness Book for 99 cents PLUS his "Reduce Screen-Use for Kids", eBook & "Digital Detox for Parents", Workbook (Value $77) Find Dr. Brian Stenzler Online Follow Dr. Brian Stenzler on Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 2: Beyond The Snap, Crackle And Pop W/ Dr. Calla Jayne Kleene Episode 12: How To Build Children's Health With Food With Dr. Ana Maria Temple Episode 15: Community And Curiosity For Longevity With Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum

Stu Levitan welcomes the renowned broadcast journalist, educator and author Patty Loew, formerly of Madison, for a conversation about the second edition of her award-winning book Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal, from our very good friends at the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. Wisconsin has about 87,000 American Indians living on about 647,000 acres of reservation and in various urban and rural settings, about 1.5% of the state's population on about 1.5 percent of the state's land mass. But despite those small percentages, the 11 federally recognized nations and tribal communities – Menominee, Oneida, Ho-Chunk, Forest County Potawatomi, Stockbridge-Munsee, and the six bands of the Lake Superior Ojibwe, plus the unrecognized Brothertown Indian Nation – have played a huge role in our history, economy and culture. Telling that history is the business that occupies Patty Loew in Indian Nations of Wisconsin, a comprehensive and accessible account, heavily illustrated, with maps and tables showing the changes over time in the location and population of the Nations. It's a book she is extremely, perhaps uniquely qualified to tell. Because, as an enrolled Member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe with a Ph D, she has both studied this history, and lived it. Now, while you were watching Patty Loew the award-winning reporter/anchor on WKOW-TV from the mid-70s to the late-90s and producer/host on Wisconsin Public Television from 1991-2011, you probably didn't realize that Patty Loew the student was also working towards a masters and doctorate in mass communications from the UW-Madison, with a dissertation on “The Chippewa and Their Newspapers in the ‘UnProgressive Era.'” Upon getting that doctorate in 1998, she continued on TV for a few years, but also became Patty Loew the Professor, in the UW's Department of Life Sciences Communication, where she remained until 2017. That's when she became Professor Emerita and moved to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where she also directs the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research. As broadcast journalist and author, she has won numerous state, national and even international awards, and has received numerous honors, including the Outstanding Service Award, Great Lakes Inter-tribal Council. Her book Seventh Generation Earth Ethics: Native Voices of Wisconsin, also from the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, won the Midwest Book Award in 2014, while the first edition of Indian Nations of Wisconsin received the 2001 Outstanding Book Award, Wisconsin Library Association, so we know how good a third edition would be. She has also written an award-winning textbook for fourth-graders, Native People of Wisconsin, along with a teacher's guide co-written by our own Back to the Country co-host Bobbi Malone. It is a real pleasure to welcome to MBB, a friend to us all, Patty Loew.

This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Micha Star Liberty (https://libertylaw.com/). Despite the defense's attempts to blame Amelie and to depict her as a reckless bicyclist, Micha Star Liberty invoked a California Vehicle Code statue, which underscored the fact that Amelie had the right to remain in her bike lane and treat it as a safety zone in the event of a turning vehicle, which trumped the defense's use of a more general statute. In January 2015, a San Francisco jury ruled that Amelie shared no responsibility in her tragic death, found the driver to be at fault and awarded Amelie's parents a total of $4 million in damages. Dr. Atwater is an international authority on near-death experiences and spiritual transformations. Dr Atwater began training in bank management when she was raped, miscarried and “died” three times in three months. Complications led her to relearn how to crawl, walk, climb stairs, run, tell the difference between left and right, hear properly, see properly, and rebuild all her belief systems. She had a near-death experience with each death. During her third NDE, The Voice Like None Other said: “Test revelation. You are to do the research. One book for each death.” She was shown what that meant. Book one was not named, books two and three were: Future Memory; A Manual for Developing Humans. Initiating what The Voice told her to do, she quit her job, gave away or stored everything she owned, sold her home, and left Idaho. That was 1978. Dr. Atwater is the author of 18 books on or related to NDEs, some of her findings have been verified in clinical studies, among them the prospective study done in Holland and published in Lancet Medical Journal and The Big Book of Near-Death Experiences brought the entire field up-to-date. Dr Atwater’s books have been translated into 12 languages. In 2005, Dr. Atwater was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS); Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists (NATH), more awards have followed. Dr. Atwater has also presented twice at the United Nations. This is her story, and this is her passion. I have been fortunate to be friends with Hiro for many years. when I first started cooking he was a hero who I looked up to then as I grew in my career we became friends. He was always there for advice, guidance and direction when needed and when it wasn’t asked for as well. His honesty in food and love of the craft is infectious. His experience is unprecedented, I am honored to call him a friend , a mentor! He is just one hell of a human being who has helped shape the culinary scene of the bay area and beyond. follow him: @hiro_sone CHEF HIRO SONE Hiro Sone has come a long way from his beginnings on a premium rice farm in Miyagi, Japan. The cuisine of 2003 winner of the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef of California” and 2008 winner of the James Beard Foundation’s “Out Standing Service” subtly pays homage to his Japanese heritage. But years of disciplined training, cooking experience, and global travel have had equal influence over refined and eclectic cooking style. Hiro developed a respect for ingredients from his family who has been growing premium rice for 18 generations. He recalls, “My mother, who’s a great cook of Japanese and Western style cuisine, took care of the vegetable gardens between rice farming. My grandmother took care of the chickens and cows. I still remember digging potatoes by hands, the rich smell of fresh milk, and helping with the rice harvest each fall. At the end of the day, after everybody had left the rice field, my grandmother would pick up each lost rice grain from the ground in the dark. I learned from her that even a piece of rice should be treated with respect.” Moving from the rice fields into the revered Osaka culinary school École Technique Hôtelière Tsuji in 1977 the 18 year-old applied that same regard and attention to detail to his studies. Under the tutelage of French masters such as Paul Bocuse and Joel Robuchon, he developed a passion and talent for French cooking that propelled him from graduation to French and Italian restaurant kitchens in Tokyo where he worked his way up from dishwasher to sous chef, and five years later into the kitchens of Wolfgang Puck.In 1983, Hiro was hired to open Spago Tokyo and went to Los Angeles to train for two months at Spago Hollywood. The experience proved pivotal. Amidst the pots and pans he met his future wife and restaurant partner Lissa Doumani and over the next year and a half he got the opportunity to create and oversee the first California cuisine restaurant in Japan.Inspired by a newfound appreciation for California cuisine, the young chef returned to Spago Hollywood as kitchen manager in 1984 and was promoted to Chef de Cuisine within six months. By 1988 he and Lissa were dreaming of a restaurant of their own, and found it in Napa Valley. The couple opened Terra in 1988 to overwhelming acclaim and it remained for thirty years as one of the Valley’s top restaurants until the closure in 2018In 1991 Hiro and Lissa received “America’s Best New Chef Award” from Food and Wine Magazine. In 2000 Terra Received “Robert Mondavi Culinary Excellence Award” In 2001 Terra Cookbook “TERRA: Cooking From The Heart Of Napa Valley” was nominated for “Best American Cookbook” by James Beard Foundation. In 2003 Hiro won “Best Chef of California” by James Beard Foundation. Same year Hiro Story was featured in Japanese prime TV show Jonetsu Tairiku 情熱大陸In 2005 opened Ame in St. Regis Hotel San Francisco, brings the signature taste of their wine country restaurant to appreciative San Francisco diners. In 2006 Ame received “The Best New Restaurant In U.S.A.” by Esquire Magazine. In 2007 Terra received “Michelin One Star” (Terra continued to receive Michelin Star every year until when Terra closed in 2018.) In 2008 Ame received “Michelin One Star” (Ame continued to receive Michelin Star every year until when Ame closed in 2016 In 2008 Terra received “Outstanding Service Award” by James Beard Foundation.Today Hiro’s inspiration comes from visiting local farms and ranches and learning their intricacies. From close relationships with local growers and winemakers and a respect for the seasons and their unique offerings, he creates innovative seasonal menus mixed with unexpected flavors from Italy, France, and the Orient—destinations he and Lissa visited during their vacations.Over three decades after leaving the Japanese countryside Hiro’s cooking honors the greatest culinary influences of his life—his heritage, classic training, and travels. But it’s his continued respect for details as minute yet important as a grain of rice that makes each dish beautifully designed with layers of flavors and textures that lend a depth that astounds with every bite.Hiro is co-author of cookbooks “TERRA cooking from heart of Napa Valley” and “A Visual Guide to Sushi-Making”

Jack Berry is a long time friend and in many ways has been a mentor. We had a fun talk story. Reminded me how much I love my friendship with Jack and mutual support. I hope you will listen. Whether you were a reader of Jack's during his many years at the Detroit News, and now in his retirement with Art and Jeannie McCafferty's Michigan Golfer or just enjoy taking about sports and how it weaves into our lives and friendships I think you will pick up how much Jack loves what he does so well. Tells stories. And I love pulling the stories out of Jack ... about how he has made a difference. Like how he was the one who got the locker room ban of females into the locker at the Masters lifted because he felt it was the right thing for them to do and he was going to do something about it. Jack covered 43 Masters!!!! This is the bio from when Jack was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2003. Jack Berry is a renowned sports writer who honed his ability reporting sports in the Detroit area. Beginning his sports writing career with the UPI, United Press International, in Detroit, he went on to write for both the Free Press and the Detroit News. A talented writer, Jack covered most sports and all of our national sports teams. Covering golf for many years allowed Jack to bear witness to some of the great events in golf. Jack also loved writing about amateur golf and covered 30-plus Michigan Amateurs. For committee service on the Michigan Golf Summits I and II, he received an Outstanding Service Award. Jack wrote about Michigan golf for 40 years. During this time, he had a strong, national influence on promoting the sport for all golfers. He served for more than ten years on the Board of Directors of the National Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), two years in the mid 80’s as President and eight years in the 90’s as Secretary-Treasurer. As President in 1984, he successfully intervened with Augusta National Golf Club Chairman, Hord Hardin, to lift the ban on female reporters in the Masters’ locker room. Golf throughout the state of Michigan benefited from Jack Berry’s powerful pen. He advanced the promotion of golf in our state by writing the Guide to Michigan Golf, first published in 1991 and updated in 1993. He followed this in 1992, with an influential inside back cover column for Golf World entitled, “A Convincing Case for Michigan: When it comes to golf, this Northern state is state of the art.” Jack also used his skills to promote and publicize the formation of the Michigan Women’s Publinx Golf Association and the Metro Detroit Executive Women’s Golf Association. He is a regular contributor to the Michigan Golfer. The GAM Distinguished Award in 1997 acknowledged his wealth of contributions to amateur golf and more than three decades of writing that inspired the growth and maintained the popularity of golf in Michigan. TODAY'S GUEST: Dr. Reese Halter Earth Doctor Reese Halter is the recipient of the President's Distinguished Service Award from Humboldt State University for his inimitable leadership in conservation biology, an Outstanding Environmental Awareness Achievement Award for Dr Reese's Planet from The National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution, an Outstanding Achievement Award for writing The Insatiable Bark Beetle from California Lutheran University, an Outstanding Achievement Award for writing Shepherding the Sea: The Race to Save our Oceans from MUSE School CA, an Excellence in Conservation-in-Action Award from Sea Shepherd Australia and an Outstanding Service Award from the Rotary Club of Westlake Village Sunrise, California, for excellence in public outreach to "Save Nature Now." Join Dr Reese Halter from the tallest trees on Earth, Californian redwoods, and largest coastal forests of the Alaskan and British Columbian wilderness, Sitka spruce, to the incomparable honeybee and the incredibly delicate Monarch butterflies that migrate southward and return northward in the summer from Canada to Mexico and Baja California (which spans the life of 3 or 4 generations of the butterfly). From the land Down Under, marvel with him at breathtaking life on the Great Barrier Reef or the incredible bees that pollinate eucalypts, and express gratitude for the colossal leatherback sea turtles and remarkable whales of the Great Southern Ocean. And from Africa please take a few moments to read Dr. Reese Halter's stories on the endangered surreal cetaceans, magnificent elephants, and majestic rhinos. Or from SE Asia the latest great coal rush killing Earth and the last Sumatran tigers that loathsome poachers are mercilessly slaughtering in the bloody 'War Against Nature'. Or the repulsive ocean-killing bloodlust in Taiji, Japan, and the Danish Faroe Islands. Kudos to Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for standing up to Japan and saying "Stop Killing Endangered Whales" and Bob Barker, the late Sam Simon, Pamela Anderson, Yao Ming, Pharrell Williams and "Anonymous" for being best friends forever to the Animal Kingdom. Humans are driving The Sixth Great Extinction, destroying sea life like nothing ever before since the dawning of reproductive life 1.1 billion years ago. The bees, trees, and seas are telling us to immediately future-proof our towns and cities -- climate in crisis. To protect nature we must love it, to love it we must understand it, to understand it we must be taught. From understanding comes wonder, which The Earth Doctor is a master at evoking. Please join him and help safeguard our environment! Connect With Today's guest: Dr. Reese Halter Website On Twitter On Facebook IN THIS EPISODE: The earth is our only home. Please take care of it! Even changing one or two habits can make a difference for the world and all who live here. America is second only to China when it comes to carbon dioxide emission. And new regulations are actually allowing coal pollution to be pumped into freshwater systems. What we do to our air and our water, we do to everything that lives on the planet. Listen to this episode to find out what you can do about environmental toxins. Even small efforts and lifestyle changes can make a big impact. When you eat fish and seafood from the ocean, the mercury they have absorbed gets into your body and stays there. Want to learn more and do something about it? In this episode, Dr. Reese Halter and I talk about how mercury gets transmitted and dangerous it is to your health and to the health of our world. I hope you'll listen and find out what steps you can take to hold on to your health and to protect our oceans. Do you want to be part of helping to save this wonderful planet Earth that we live on? Read the full story with photos at: https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/2013/0926_01.html Pharmavite began an educational effort with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) more than 10 years ago when it recognized the potential of partnering with a national medical organization with more than 110,000 physicians members. The opportunity was to provide science-based dietary supplement information on the products that were part of the Nature Made brand. The reach of the family physician is broad with, nearly 1 in 4 doctor visits in the United States being made to a family physician. Four years ago, Pharmavite became a founding partner of a new AAFP education initiative to bring the Nature Made’s science based messages to family physicians. Overall support from the AAFP leadership and response from the AAFP membership to the dietary supplement education programs has been overwhelmingly positive. On September 26, 2013, Doug MacLean, Pharmavite’s CEO, accepted the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation’s Outstanding Service Award on behalf of Pharmavite at the AAFP Foundation Dinner. It is the Academy’s highest recognition for vendors, suppliers and companies that support the medical profession or their employees. “The depth of this honor is that the nominations are made by the AAFP state chapters, members and staff to the AAFP Board of Directors,” said Doug MacLean. “It speaks to the strength of the relationship between our two organizations and our common vision of optimizing health and wellness for individuals, our communities and people around the world.” The 11th year will break new ground with Pharmavite’s creation of an initiative called Nature Made Cares About Family Medicine. It is designed to raise funds to support Family Medicine Cares, the AAFP Foundation’s humanitarian program to establish new free medical clinics. The initiative encourages physician engagement with and education about dietary supplements with patients. “The Nature Made Cares About Family Medicine program adds a new dimension to Pharmavite’s support of the Foundation’s work,” said Craig Doane, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at the AAFP. “We know our members place a high value on the humanitarian efforts of the organization, and they consistently request and need patient education materials for their day-to-day practice. The innovative design of this new program allows both goals to be achieved.” Nature Made Cares About Family Medicine is a part of Pharmavite’s strategic partnership with the AAFP. The partnership allows Nature Made to reach AAFP’s physician members with Nature Made brand information and dietary supplement-focused educational materials.

Help prevent stormwater system pollutionStormwater is runoff from rain or snowmelt that flows off streets, rooftops and lawns into storm drains, which lead directly into streams, lakes and rivers. Stormwater receives no treatment before being discharged to surface waters. If polluted, stormwater can negatively impact the local water resources used for drinking water, recreation and wildlife habitat. The City of Ann Arbor's “A Resident's Guide to Clean Water” features 10 easy tips to use at home and on the job. From using phosphorus-free lawn fertilizer to painting tips (washing latex paint brushes in the sink, not outside), these actions add up to significant reductions in pollutants entering the stormwater system and help protect the water quality in the Huron River, the source of 85 percent of Ann Arbor's drinking water. Find these tips online, and an index to related stormwater issues is available at www.a2gov.org/storm. Meetings will take place:Monday, April 9, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Senior Center, 1320 Baldwin Avenue.Wednesday, April 11, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cobblestone Farm Center, 2781 Packard Road.Monday, April 23, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Leslie Science & Nature Center Nature House, 1831 Traver Road.Thursday, April 26, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Public Library Traverwood Branch, 3333 Traverwood Drive. The meeting agenda will include a brief background on the parks millage and how it is used by the park system; an explanation of how the park system is funded; and information regarding the proposed millage renewal process. The Park Maintenance and Capital Improvements Millage is a six-year millage for 1.10 mills that was approved by residents of the City of Ann Arbor on Nov. 7, 2006. The millage expires in 2012. Each year, the millage generates approximately $5 million in revenue.Between 60 and 80 percent of the annual millage funds support city park maintenance activities, such as forestry and horticulture; natural area preservation; park operations; park equipment repairs; park security; and recreation facility maintenance. Between 20 and 40 percent of the annual millage funds is designated for city park capital improvements in the following areas: active parks; forestry and horticulture; historic preservation; neighborhood parks and urban plazas; pathways, trails, boardwalks, greenways and the Huron River watershed; recreation facilities; and park equipment acquisitions. If you are not able to attend a public meeting, you can share your comments or questions via email. A website dedicated to the parks millage will go live to the public during the week of April 2, 2012, atwww.a2gov.org/parksmillage.Spring hydrant flushing resumesThe City of Ann Arbor water utilities division conducts annual fire hydrant inspection and system maintenance. The seasonal hydrant work begins April 2, weather permitting. Hydrant-flushing schedules will be posted on the city's “news” Web page; and more information is available on the city's hydrant-flushing website. Why is it helpful to know when hydrant flushing is happening in your neighborhood? On occasion during the hydrant-flushing process, the water in area homes may have an orange or rusty appearance. The discolored water does not pose a health or safety risk, but the water can cause stains to laundry. If water appears discolored, please run the cold water for several minutes to clear your lines. You should also flush your toilets once or twice. The water should run clear within a few minutes. The iron sediment in the water main being disturbed by the hydrant flushing causes the discoloration. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the hydrant-flushing process, please visit the website, or contact the City of Ann Arbor field services unit at 734.794.6350.Planning and development services debuts mobile websiteA new mobile website is now available for the city's construction and building customers. This new site enables people to use their Smartphones or tablets to access building records and general planning and development information, as well as to schedule and obtain inspection results and plan review status. This service is a complement to the eTRAKiT system, which currently allows users to access this same information from a website and through its interactive voice response system for phones.Save this URL as a favorite on your phone: http://etrakit.a2gov.org/mobile. This feature will allow customers greater access to construction and building information to a user base that does a great deal of their work in the field and on location.Seasonal siren testingThe City of Ann Arbor's 22 outdoor warning system sirens are tested every second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m., with one minute of steady wailing. Testing of the sirens is performed March through November. Please remember that the sirens are an outdoor warning system only and are not intended to be heard indoors. The city's outdoor warning system sirens are activated for the following situations: tornado warning, hazardous materials spill or terrorist attack. In the event that the sirens are activated, they will sound for three minutes, and citizens should seek cover immediately.During a local disaster emergency, residents can tune into Community Television Network channels 16, 17, 18 or 19 for local emergency information and updates.
