On Sunday, September 25th, Italy held a snap election following the resignation of prime minister Mario Draghi and the dissolution of the Italian Parliament. The election resulted in a parliamentary majority a right-wing coalition led by Fratelli d'Italia (or Brothers of Italy), a far-right party with roots in postwar Italian neofascist movements. The party and its leader, new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, espouse social conservatism, nationalism, populism, opposition to immigration, and Euroscepticism. Meloni's election holds significant policy implications not only for domestic Italian society, but also for Italy's relationship with the European Union and the wider world. Noelle Turtur, the Eugen and Jacqueline Weber Postdoctoral Scholar in European History at UCLA, joins Ben Zdencanovic on Then & Now to discuss the historical roots Italian fascism, the legacies of fascism in Italian politics, and what Meloni's election might mean for Italy and the international system.

The 2022 Italian general elections were held in Italy on 25 September 2022, after the fall of the Draghi government. The centre-right coalition led by Giorgia Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy, a radical-right political party with neo-fascist roots, won an absolute majority of seats in the Italian Parliament. Why did the right-wing coalition win the majority in Italy? What does this have to do with the events of the past few years? What does this mean for the future of Italy and Europe? Our guest is Marina Dosijanoski, an Italian with Macedonian roots. She is an Alumna of the College of Europe and she is currently pursuing a traineeship at the European Policy Centre(CEP).

Bertrand's latest piece in the New York Times is an autobiographical tale that describes his life growing up in generational poverty titled, “I Escaped Poverty, But Hunger Still Haunts Me”. Now, as Pascal can attest to, writing for outlets like Newsweek, the editing process can sometimes alter what the main thesis of what you're trying to convey in order to be “relatable” to a wider audience. I spoke with Bertram a few weeks ago while hanging out with my son in L.A. and we had a long talk about poverty's lasting effects on one's psyche and how he actually got out and stayed out. Sacrifices are sometimes necessary. Removing yourself from friends and family who are stuck in the same cycle.   It may seem harsh and counterintuitive to those of us on the left, but sometimes escaping the barbaristic reality of capitalism necessitates solutions that slogans and hope can't provide immediately. The abolition of capitalism will not occur overnight, and the purpose of this essay is to shed light on the collateral damage caused by the structures in which we live. But, sadly due to the editing to fit a liberal framework, it almost comes across as a Horatio Alger story.    Throughout the essay, Bertram paints a very vivid picture of what generational poverty looks like through a child's eyes. As a baby, his father was incarcerated and remained a dark presence in his life.  His mother was dependent on relationships with men, which didn't work out well due to her violent nature as well leaving Bertram the victim of circumstance. But his life was one was one I'd seen play out where I'm from and there were stories that reminded me of my own life.     Our conversation a few weeks back explored the dark realities of what it is like to go hungry and be poor, as well as the reality that sometimes it is necessary to turn one's back on their family and friends in order to survive. In this case though, it is not a Hollywood tale about meritocracy and entrepreneurship. In order for Bertram to move beyond his inner-city surroundings, it took more than simply hard work and determination. From the piece in the Times:   In 1988, the year I was born, the Census Bureau reported that there were approximately 31.9 million people in poverty. In 2019, the last year before the pandemic, it had grown to 34 million people. According to one study of 20 million children, only 3 percent of Black children born into poverty make it to the upper class — adults whose annual household income is in the top 20 percent. The fact that I'm among that 3 percent is due to good fortune (an unearned talent for tests) and the help of strangers: federal grants and low-interest loans put in place by people I have never met. Delaying parenthood was vital to my escape, but it wouldn't have happened without access to contraception and abortion, which will be less available to the poor kids coming up behind me.   So if you guys have a chance check out the article, there should be a link in the chat, and if you're watching the playback on this there will be a link in the comments. This past weekend, voters in Italy went to the polls for national parliamentary elections. As expected, the elections resulted in a victory for the alliance led by Giorgia Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy party, which received enough votes to govern without support from the center-left. How significant of a change does this result represent for Italy, and how worried should we be about its implications for Europe and the transatlantic community? Nathalie Tocci and Cecilia Sottilotta join Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend to move beyond the headlines and assess what Meloni's victory means for Italian and European politics. Nathalie Tocci is Director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali and an Honorary Professor at the University of Tübingen. She was previously Special Advisor to EU High Representatives Federica Mogherini and Josep Borrell, during which she wrote the European Union's Global Strategy and worked on its implementation. Welcome to the second season of Deep Dive!Today I'm talking to Italian journalist, and 2019 Nieman Fellow at Harvard, Mattia Ferraresi. Mattia is the managing editor of the Italian newspaper Domani and his work has been featured in numerous outlets, including New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Foreign Policy Magazine.  Italy is having elections in just two days time – on Sunday, September 25th. And, all polls leading into the final stretch suggest that the far-right party Brothers of Italy, is going to win enough shares of the vote that they will form the next government under the Prime Ministership of the leader of their party – Giorgia Meloni. This is happening just after the April elections in France, in which the far-right leader Marine Le Pen came closer than ever to winning the election, and immediately following elections this past week, in which the far-right parties, led by Ulf Kristerrson's center-right moderates, have won enough seats to form the next government. This came after promising during the campaign to crack down on immigration and increase prison sentences. This is a watershed moment for Sweden, perhaps for Europe overall, as Sweden is consistently one of the most progressive nation-states in Europe – which begs the question, what does Italy have in store for us?Mattia and I discuss the structure of Italian government, how the past informs its government now, how liberal democracy has evolved in Italy, how the left has failed to address the concerns of the electorate leaving open an avenue for the right to exploit, what's driving the electorate in Italy now, and what we might expect from a far-right government. I'd like to thank Giorgio Ghiglione for providing background and contextual information, helping me to better understand italian politics and government. A busy week for central banks come to an end with plenty of rate hikes, increased prospects of slowing growth, that leave investors with a bad taste in their mouth. The Swedish Riksbank was the first major central bank to surprise with a 100bp rate hike. The US Federal Reserve (Fed) delivered its third 75bp hike. But the dot plot hinted at another jumbo hike before the year-end. The Bank of Japan (BoJ) maintained its policy rate unchanged at -0.10%, but intervened directly in the FX market to buy yen to fight back the strengthening dollar. The Swiss National Bank (SNB) raised its policy rate by 75bp. The Bank of England (BoE) opted for a 50bp hike, combined with an £80 billion Quantitative Tightening, and said the UK is now in recession. The UK will reveal the ‘mini' budget today. Norges Bank also increased its policy rate by 50bp but signaled that tightening may be coming to an end. Indonesia and the Philippines also hiked by 50bp. Taiwan raised by a modest 12.5% as expected, Vietnam opted for a 100bp hike, South Africa raised by 75bp… …and Turkey… cut its rate by 100bp for the second consecutive month! But the week is not over. The Italian elections due Sunday will likely continue pressuring the euro lower. Listen to find out more!

With the Fed meeting out of the way, a quieter week is on the horizon, barring of course any flare up of tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Either way, the spotlight will probably fall on the euro as far-right parties are expected to gain ground in Italy's parliamentary election on Sunday, while preliminary inflation readings will come to the fore at the end of the week. In the US, the highlight will be on the PCE inflation figures, though it's doubtful whether it will change much regarding the Fed policy outlook. Should Brothers of Italy obtain most of the votes, it is likely that Giorgia Meloni will try to form a coalition government. Meloni could be the first woman leading an Executive in Italy. However, the International press defined a potential victory of Giorgia Meloni, as a resurgence of modern-fascism in Italy. Letter from America by Alistair Cooke: From Nixon to Carter (1969-1980)

It was restored by the BBC in 2014.
