Hello to you listening all over America on this Memorial Day our nation's foremost day of remembrance.Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories from Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. On this solemn day of reflection we honor and mourn the men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country in peacetime and war. Today we are at war. Our Democracy, our constitution, our rule of law, and even our people are under assault. Is there reason to fight, to hope? You bet there is!The first weeks of Churchill's Prime Ministership were clouded by the fall of France and the surrender of the Belgian Army, with repercussions for the Western alliance. To delay the German advance towards Britain, Churchill ordered expeditionary forces to retreat towards the port of Dunkirk to allow an Allied evacuation that lasted for nine days. Churchill's descriptions of events were more akin to a war reporter than a political statesman as he explained in great detail to his fellow members the bravery and ingenuity of the British forces in the face of the German war machine. Despite the success of the operation there was still a loss of over 30,000 men and vast amounts of artillery.Yet in the face of such adversity and sacrifice Churchill used his voice and his unshakeable determination to make a rallying cry to not just his fellow countrymen but also the beleaguered French in this historic speech delivered to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on June 4, 1940: “We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender!”Click HERE to listen to Churchill's voice and take in the unforgettable images that fortified his words.Click HERE to access the Transcript of Churchill's speechClick HERE to access: The Miracle of Dunkirk Click HERE to access the 85th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk with 64 of the original Little Ships heading back to the Dunkirk beaches.CTA: As you go about your day keep in mind that we Americans are not lost as long as we organize and fight together. We discuss the first week of Keir Starmer's Prime Ministership, and how if we scratch what seems to be a social democratic measure, we find a neoliberal one. How lowball ambition will not change the United Kingdom's housing crisis or stagnant economy, especially given we now have a lower GDP than the state of Mississippi. Who will the next Tory leader be? What will Labour do regarding Transgender ideology? Will there be any change to 47% of 3-child families living in poverty? We make our predictions and implore anyone who can't see a future here, to exit the UK for a better life, if possible, before it gets worse.Plus, what would a middle-class riot look like? How downwardly mobile do they have to be to care? The sibling rivalry of todays dating scene, the impending baby shortage, and our understanding of our era of neoliberal bureaucratic Borg rule as what Mark Fisher called ‘market Stalinism'.

Lifting Indians out of poverty lies at the core of Narendra Modi's wildly popular political strategy. And it's worked: during his Prime Ministership, India has risen from the tenth largest economy in the world to the fifth. But this rising tide has also widened the gap between the rich and the poor in India, and has raised questions about Modi's ties to business leaders who have turned the nation's rise to their own advantage.

Look, I really want to believe that 82 new truancy officers are going to turn around our falling attendance rates at schools.  But we live in the real world, so here are some real world facts: We have 2500 schools and 815,000 students in this country. That means each of those officers is going to have to cover 31 schools each. Each of those officers is responsible for 10,000 students each. If the figures are to be believed and 54 percent were truant in term three last year, then each of those officers are supposed to chase up 5400 students regularly. Obviously, there are already some existing truancy officers trying to do the job, but the trouble is; we don't how many, because the Government doesn't know how many. And it's probably not a lot. The reason that this is one of Chris Hipkins' first announcements in the first month of his Prime Ministership is because he knows it's a vote winner. He knows we're worried about our kids and he knows cracking down on truancy will be popular.  But it's only popular if it's believable, if voters actually believe it's going to make a difference. And on those numbers, it's hard to believe that this is possible. It's also hard to believe that this is anything other than cynical vote winning tactic from this Government, because they've left it this late to deal with the truancy. I was reading stories as long ago as 2020 with headlines like “The attendance freefall in New Zealand's schools”. Chris Hipkins himself, as former Education Minister, would've seen the truancy numbers ticking up. And did nothing about it, until today. Truancy is a massive issue in New Zealand. Our kids' education should be top priority, not an easy headline bought with 82 truancy officers.  So I'm sorry to say this feels like one straight out of the Jacinda playbook. Good headline, scratch beneath the surface just one layer- disappointing.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sam hosts journalist Ann Neumann to discuss her recent piece in Harper's, "Falling Like Leaves: The war in Ethiopia and its crimes against civilians". Then, Sam's joined by Dawn Tefft, a Lead Organizer with Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee (EWOC), and Sam Harshner, organizer and Adjunct Instructor of Political Science and History at Marquette University, to discuss their work with EWOC and its central mission. First, Sam runs through updates on Biden's State of the Union speech, the rising death roll in the wake of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the Democrats sweeping Pennsylvania's special election, the Fed continuing their attack on labor, and the House GOP launching their investigation into Hunter Biden's d*ck pics, before diving into the contrast between Biden's tack towards bipartisanship and Sarah Huckabee Sanders' statements that she's nothing like Joe Biden. Ann Neumann then joins as she walks through the last five years of Ethiopian conflict, beginning with the protests and riots breaking out in 2016 and led to myriad resignations across the Ethiopian government and the assumption of Abiy Ahmed to the Prime Ministership, who immediately stepped in to sign a peace treaty with Isaias Afwerki to end the multi-decade Eritrean-Ethiopian border conflict – a move that would earn Ahmed a Nobel Peace Prize, only for it to become apparent that, as a part of the treaty, there was an agreement to turn against their common enemy of Tigray. After a brief conversation on the role of Tigray and Eritrea in the liberation of Ethiopia from the Derg regime, Neumann parses through the role of the US in propping up various leaders in Eritrea and Ethiopia in the shift towards neocolonialism, with Abiy Ahmed being a particular darling of the west. Wrapping up the interview, Ann walks Sam through the crimes against civilians that have come through Ethiopia's strict information blockade, from outright violence and violation to the manipulation of food and medicine, and how the information blockade itself developed. Dawn Tefft and Sam Harshner dive right into the creation of the Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee in early 2020 in response to the impact of the pandemic on workplaces, with the DSA joining with United Electorate to help sponsor and strategize labor organizing and the establishment of unions across the US in the fight for safe workplace policy in a pandemic. After briefly touching on EWOC's work at Marquette University, Dawn and Sam walk through the biggest challenges that faced workplace organizing throughout the pandemic, and how easy it is for workers to unite over mediocre and unsafe working conditions. And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR Crew tackle Biden baiting the Right into committing to Social Security and Medicare, Frank Luntz's response on (s)quack box, and other highlights from Biden's State of the Union. Nine from Seattle dives into Eritrea's relationship to colonialism and colonization, Ryan from Ohio dives into the disaster train derailment that has taken his house, and Chad from NYC rants against corporate “charity” as per the development of Box Tops. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a polarizing figure. For some, he's the ultimate defender of the State of Israel, willing to do whatever he thinks it takes to protect the one Jewish state located in the most volatile region of the world. For others, Bibi symbolizes everything that's wrong with 21st century Israel: the state's rightward turn and its never ending conflict with the Palestinians. His supporters chant “Bibi, King of Israel!” at his rallies, while at protests, his enemies call him “crime minister.” Bill Clinon said: “you should never underestimate him.” Barack Obama said he was “smart, canny, tough” but that they “did not share worldviews.” And Trump called him “the man that I did more for than any other person I dealt with” but then later, infamously “f— him.” But there's one thing that everyone can agree on: Benjamin Netanyahu is the reigning master of Israeli politics. And despite being ousted from the Prime Ministership just over a year ago, Bibi is back. For a third stint. Why is Benjamin Netanyahu the man that Israelis just can't quit? And what does it mean for Israel that he's attempting to form a government with some of the most radical, far-right parties in Israel?  Today, an interview with Prime Minister Netanyahu on the eve of his return to power and on the occasion of the publication of his book, Bibi: My Story, an autobiography about his evolution from soldier to statesman. We talked about how he draws moral lines as a leader, about the prospect of peace with the Palestinians and the prospect of peace with the Saudis, and about how he plans to uphold Israel's delicate balance between Judaism and democracy as he steps in to lead his country once more.  Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the second season of Deep Dive!Today I'm talking to Italian journalist, and 2019 Nieman Fellow at Harvard, Mattia Ferraresi. Mattia is the managing editor of the Italian newspaper Domani and his work has been featured in numerous outlets, including New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Foreign Policy Magazine.  Italy is having elections in just two days time – on Sunday, September 25th. And, all polls leading into the final stretch suggest that the far-right party Brothers of Italy, is going to win enough shares of the vote that they will form the next government under the Prime Ministership of the leader of their party – Giorgia Meloni. This is happening just after the April elections in France, in which the far-right leader Marine Le Pen came closer than ever to winning the election, and immediately following elections this past week, in which the far-right parties, led by Ulf Kristerrson's center-right moderates, have won enough seats to form the next government. This came after promising during the campaign to crack down on immigration and increase prison sentences. This is a watershed moment for Sweden, perhaps for Europe overall, as Sweden is consistently one of the most progressive nation-states in Europe – which begs the question, what does Italy have in store for us?Mattia and I discuss the structure of Italian government, how the past informs its government now, how liberal democracy has evolved in Italy, how the left has failed to address the concerns of the electorate leaving open an avenue for the right to exploit, what's driving the electorate in Italy now, and what we might expect from a far-right government. I'd like to thank Giorgio Ghiglione for providing background and contextual information, helping me to better understand italian politics and government. During AnAl's first week as PM, the globalists have gathered for their annual Spectre meeting at their Davos lair planning our future. I cover all the post-election changes you may have missed on this special end of week Tim's News Explosion. I begin with a health alert as we now have covid, the flu, gastro, RSV, monkeypox, Japanese Encephalitis, and Legionnaires' disease to be alarmed about. PM AnAl's first week has been dominated by foreign policy following his Quad meeting. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has been visiting the Pacific region in an effort to stop more nations from signing security pacts with China. Scott Morrison has resigned as Liberal leader with Peter Dutton the only candidate to replace him. Labor's Tanya Plibersek has apologized for saying that Peter Dutton looks like Voldemort. Dutton has promised to bring moderates and conservatives together and show a different side of himself. In the 2019 election campaign, the Courier-Mail quoted Dutton's wife saying ‘my Pete's no monster'. After a terrible federal election result for the Liberals in Victoria, the state party proceeded in expelling conservative pro-life MLC Bernie Finn this week. In a sign that it won't be easy under Albanese and AnAl will be painful electricity prices will rise from July. Acting Home Affairs Minister Jim Chalmers announced that the Tamil asylum seeker family will be allowed to return to Biloela on bridging visas despite arriving in Australia illegally and not being found to be refugees. The World Economic Forum held its annual meeting at its lair in Davos, Switzerland. Founder and Chairman Klaus Schwab is not deterred by increased scrutiny of his Great Reset declaring to his guests ‘the future will be built by us'. He joked about anti-vax conspiracy theorists with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. Australia's eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant told the forum that online free speech needs to be recalibrated against a range of other human rights. Alibaba Group president J. Michael Evans announced plans for carbon footprint trackers. In UK news Sue Gray's report into Partygate has finally been published and is much more damning about the culture inside Number 10 than anticipated but Boris Johnson is holding on to the Prime Ministership. The US has had another tragic mass shooting with 18-year-old Salvador Ramos murdering 19 students and two teachers and wounded 17 others at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Australian-style gun control is again being sold as the solution for this sick aspect of US culture. In celebrity news actor Ray Liotta died suddenly at the age of 67 in his sleep. Actor Kevin Spacey has been charged in the UK with four counts of sexual assault against three men. THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

The idea of having enthusiasm would seem to be pretty obvious for someone presenting.  In some cases, though we are just presenting information and getting massively enthusiastic about a bunch of not particularly illuminating numbers would be difficult. Often internal meetings are like this.  We have to give our report on the revenue and client numbers or the trend with visitors to our stores or whatever.  These are factual reports and if we were to suddenly start gushing with breathless enthusiasm, our bosses and colleagues may regard us with deep suspicion that we had lost our marbles.  If we want our listeners to agree with our suggestions or to take action, then we definitely need enthusiasm.  If we are in the persuasion business, then enthusiasm has to be a staple of our presentations.   Last week's episode was all about the dark failings of Prime Minister Suga as a communicator.  I had the unfortunate bad luck to be watching his media conference announcing the extension of the state of emergency.  It was seriously painful to watch.  I was reminded of how important enthusiasm was, by sitting through his long press conference, where there wasn't  a trace of enthusiasm in his presentation.  In the end, I couldn't take any more and turned the television off.   I am not being facetious, when I talk about pain in this case.  Whether it is Suga or anyone else, if their job is to influence us or persuade us and they attempt that without marshalling any enthusiasm, it is physically painful to sit there and be exposed to that.  So let's flip it around and think about when it is our turn to be the influencer, the persuader.  How are we approaching this task?  Are we just buffeting our audience with a data dump, with an extended avalanche of statistics?   Numbers are dead, by the way.  They only have life injected into them by having context applied.  When we do that, the relativities become clearer.  Explaining the background helps explain their relevance.  How often though have we been served up spreadsheets on screen or a bunch of line graphs, crowded together on screen?   This is very common speaker behaviour and a big pain receptor.   We need to find poignant stories about those numbers that make them really come alive.  We need to place them in context with the current business situation and commercial trends.  What do they portend for the organisation?  We need to contrast them with other figures, so we have some sense of perspective.   Instead, what do we get?  “I know you can't see this but….”, as the speaker drones on throwing up a spreadsheet in tiny fonts, overwhelming us with a blizzard of numbers.  Why do they do that?  Obviously no clue and no training would be the answer.  Rather, they could use animation and show a pop up a balloon, with a single number displayed in very large font, so we can read it easily.  They can then enthusiastically tell us the story of that number and what it represents.  That will be memorable and impactful.   When speakers talk with zero or very low energy like Suga, they mystically suck all of the energy out of the room and suddenly you feel worse than before they started.   In the opposite case, that transfer of speaker energy to the audience has an uplifting effect and the world looks better immediately.  Their enthusiasm becomes contagious and suddenly the world looks a lot better to us. Which variety of speaker would you like to be known as – the uplifter or the energy thief?   Having passion for your subject is required.  Even if the topic itself is rather humdrum and mundane, let's try and find something in there that will be of interest to an audience.  When we tell the stories we have selected, let's do so with verve.  We don't need to be at max power all of the time, but at certain key junctures, we need to rev up the engine and go hard.   Watching Suga, you felt like this guy never gets out of first gear and the engine is barely ticking over.  Until we can find the techniques for bringing energy to our talks, we should refrain from giving them, because the world doesn't need another energy assassin roaming free.    We should get coaching, get the training, work hard and put a lot of emphasis on rehearsal.  No one is born as a great presenter.  It is a learnt skill and one we can achieve, if we give it the priority it deserves.  Never forget, once we get up to speak, our personal and professional brands are in jeopardy.  Suga will leave the Prime Ministership a total nobody and will soon be forgotten, except perhaps as an abject lesson in what not to do.  We don't want to join that crowd do we?    Let's bring our enthusiasm to our subject and inject it into our audience, thereby adding to our reputation and making the whole exercise a personal branding triumph.

The news cycle is awash with Prime Minister Suga's shock announcement that he will not continue as Japan's leader.  His predecessor Shinzo Abe quit on health concerns and handed over the Covid crisis to Suga.  Here we are twelve months later and Suga is gone.  His inability to communicate as a leader has been seized upon as one of the key reasons for his failure.  In Episode #233, I focused on Suga's challenges with communication.  Here we are five months later and he has joined that large community of entirely forgetable Japanese leaders.  From his own admission, he has reflected that he wasn't able to communicate his thoughts in an authentic way.  That would be a case of delusional thinking.   He was entirely authentic.  He was boring, showed no passion, had a single facial expression regardless of the content, had no variation in the speed or strength of his delivery and never smiled.  Apart from that, he was totally forgettable, especially regarding his message.  His supporters, fellow politicians, have lamented that he should have spoken more from his heart.  More delusion.  He read all of his speeches, because he couldn't string two words together by himself and so had to read it to us.  Those speeches were no doubt prepared by bureaucrats in the relevant Ministries depending on the subject or by his staff.  Every time he tried to speak to reporters without notes, he was obviously struggling and he kept those occasions as short as possible.  If there was any opportunity to use teleprompters, he grabbed at it like a drowning man going down for the third time.  No heart at play in any of these speeches.   He is a abject lesson for everyone about the importance of having a skilled capacity as a public speaker.  This might be one of those urban myths, but apparently some parents wouldn't let their kids listen to him, in case he created a negative influence on their communication skills.  Even if it isn't true it is still not a bad idea, because he can only instruct through negative example.   Basically, he has been a so called “retail politician” his whole career.  Someone without privileges or an array of silver spoons like Abe and Previous Prime Minister and current Finance Minister Taro Aso, who through his own dint of hard work and cunning managed to climb to the highest post in the land.  This is a classic tale of patronage, backroom deals and obligations running out of gas. What was also needed was a personal strength in persuasion power through public speaking.  In the end, his colleagues, fully concentrated on saving their own necks, forced him out because they were concerned about an electoral backlash of voter unhappiness.   As we rise through the ranks in our careers we will be called on to become more persuasive.  That will involve public speaking.  Shinzo Abe version Mark 2, when he came back into the Prime Ministership, had obviously had public speaking training.  He was much better than the earlier Mark 1 version.  So what happened with Suga?  If he in fact did receive coaching on speaking, then let's find out who was his coach and make sure we never use them.  Watching him speak in public from his time as Chief Cabinet Secretary since 2012, until he became Prime Minister in 2020, he hasn't changed at all.  It is more likely he has never sought any professional coaching on how to become more persuasive.   Why would that be?  My guess would be he didn't see the need until it was too late.  By too late, I mean having to announce he was quitting.  When he became the leader, he inherited the Covid crisis from Abe. During Suga's watch it has gone on to the fifth wave, with epic numbers of people becoming infected. Let's also toss in the Olympics, just to really turn the heat up.  Probably not a lot of spare time for coaching on how to be more persuasive and get his message across to the Japanese voters.   This is the point.  Don't wait until it is too late like Suga.  Get the training now and keep getting it right throughout your career.  If you want to be persuasive, if you want to get your message across, then it takes work and requires concentrated time.  When you get to the top like Suga, it is too late because you don't have time.  We all need to be working on this speaking facility before we get to the top.  In fact, this same facility will become an engine to power us to get to the top.  Get trained and keep polishing your communication skills as a lifelong learning commitment.  In a few months time, Suga will have been replaced and forgotten.  It could have been totally different if he had learnt how to be persuasive. He could have delivered his message, authentically and professionally, expressing clearly and succinctly what was in his heart.  Sayonara Suga san.

But Turnbull's view of the Liberal Party – a progressive party of the ‘sensible centre', with individual freedom and aspiration at its core – put him at odds with the Liberals' conservative wing. He clashed with them throughout most of his political career. Sally Warhaft, left, and Malcolm Turnbull His rocky ride in the Australian Parliament was defined by moments such as the carbon emissions debate and the historic same-sex marriage survey. In this episode, we examine the aftermath of the Progressive Conservative Party's collapse with Howard Ramos of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. Howard is a leading Canadian sociologist, and former president of the Canadian Sociological Association.

Pete is away so he misses out on discussing all the big stories of the week with James and Adam from So Fox – like the incoming regulation of big tech, all the government agencies (including Veterinary Surgeons Boards) who are trying to get your metadata, and Labor's attempts to keep a CPAC speaker out of Australia because they threaten “equality.” Heroes and Villains this week features a kid learning the horror of taxes through Monopoly and a councillor putting ‘carbon footprint' over ‘human safety'. James talks to IPA Adjunct Fellow Matthew Lesh to preview Boris Johnston's Prime Ministership, assess Theresa May's legacy and ask whether Britain will actually leave the EU on October 31. James also speaks to Shawn, a Hong Kong protestor visiting Melbourne, about where the protests are at now, prospects for liberty and what it's like to live in a country so divided. At the end James and Adam recap the push to cancel Quentin Tarantino, Trump trying to free A$AP Rocky, The Rock caving to the outrage mob and whether Labor MP Will Fowles kicking in a hotel door is a template for Adam when he's a rockstar. Post-interview Shawn wished to clarify some remarks - The original case that started the extradition bill involved someone being extradited to Taiwan from Hong Kong, not the other way around. This captures the fears of Hong Kongers that they may one day be extradited to China."

Today we're featuring a conversation with one of the world's most prominent political elders - former Australian Federal Liberal Party leader, and now Professorial Fellow at the Australian National University, John Hewson. In recent years, John has become an increasingly admired figure across the political spectrum, as a powerful advocate for more leadership, transparency, responsible investment, and evidence-based policy. This is particularly in the context of the inter-related global challenges of climate change, a possible further financial crisis, and so-called ‘post-truth' politics. So it was a real pleasure to receive a call from John upon our arrival in Canberra, welcoming a conversation. It became an even greater pleasure as John's level of candour, depth, insight, humour and care became more apparent. Most Australians probably still recall John from his contesting of the 1993 federal election for the Prime Ministership. But he's a bit like the life-long musician who had a few years in a famous pop band. The rest of his life has featured an extensive array of studies, achievements and experience, across a range of sectors and senior positions globally. We talk about his frustrations and great concerns – the precariousness of our financial and ecological systems, the hollowness of money and economic growth for their own sake, and the difficultly current systems are having grappling with all this. And we talk about his proposals for change, his experiences of dealing with vested interests, the great potential of the youth vote in particular, but also of a broad movement based on a greater sense of national purpose. We also gain more of a sense of the deeply felt purpose driving John; a purpose that sees corporate responsibility as about culture rather than charity, acting beyond our own immediate interests for the good of the whole, and an openness to learn from each other. Anthony's co-host for this conversation is former senior corporate executive, Keith Badger. A leopard doesn’t change it spots. Julia Gillard’s statement that Tony Abbott should get out of Sydney’s north shore and talk to real working families is designed to create class warfare – Australians vs. Australians. The Prime Minister should be encouraging unity, not creating such divisions. The Marxian concept of segregating the community into groups and playing them off against each other is nothing new to our Prime Minister. The question is, is all of this part of a more sinister agenda? Despite desperately trying to portray herself as a moderate prior to the election, this is difficult to reconcile with her actions in office as well as her long standing alliance with, and even leadership of various extreme-left organisations. Under Ms. Gillard’s Prime Ministership, this Labor government has facilitated the largest redistribution of wealth that this nation has ever experienced. This is class warfare at its peak. Gillard, the class warrior has returned to her roots and must be removed from office at the first available opportunity.
