NBN host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Jacob McArthur Mooney about his debut novel, The Northern, published by ECW Press in 2025. “The Northern is both a tender-hearted, contemplative coming-of-age novel and adventure-filled road trip story that brings a unique time in sports history to life.” ― Zoe Whittall, author of The Fake and The Best Kind of People “W.P. Kinsella has company: Jacob Mooney has written another classic Canadian novel about baseball.” ― Ben Lindbergh, co-host of Effectively Wild and author of The MVP Machine and The Only Rule Is It Has to Work It is the summer of 1952 and three men ― well, one man and two boys ― are on a spiritual and commercial mission. Dispatched from Minnesota to Western Ontario, they have been hired by an upstart Mormon baseball card company to find licensees for their products among the young men filing out Korean War–era rosters in the Northern League, at the bottom-most rung of professional baseball. What the Northern has for them, and the secrets and deceptions they have for each other, will drive their two weeks in Canada into ever-growing chaos. With a world shaped by the trauma of World War II and the generations of deflated adults and orphaned children left behind by it, The Northern sets out on a clear-eyed and psychologically precise character study taking on grief, fantasy, adolescence, and family. As the narrator for this story of salesmen and ambitious athletes, 12-year-old Chris is a budding acerbic, able to be carried away by the ― often empty ― hopes of others and put his feet in the ground to stop them. A novel concerned with sports, labor, growing up, and God, The Northern is a funny and heartbreaking book about the series of disappointments that characterize the progress of growing up. About Jacob McArthur Mooney: Jacob McArthur Mooney's work has been shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Trillium Award in Poetry. Episode 257 features author, Joseph R. Haynes discussing his book on barbecue history and Josh Schaub, Commissioner of the American Association of Professional Baseball providing baseball fans with alternatives to the MLB.  Plus Jeff tells about his special weekend in Philadelphia   Joseph R. Haynes is an award winning barbecue cook, a Kansas City Barbeque Society Master Certified Barbecue Judge, and an author.  He also authored the Virginia Barbecue Proclamation that was unanimously passed by the Virginia State Legislature in 2016.  His latest tome, From Barbycu to Barbecue: The Untold History of an American Tradition offers a fresh new look at the story of southern barbecuing.  The book includes an analysis of historical sources throughout the Americas that show that the southern barbecuing technique is as unique to the United States as jerked hog is to Jamaica and barbacoa is to Mexico. A recipe in each chapter provides a contemporary interpretation of a historical technique.  Joined by guest co-host, Doug Scheiding, we all learn a lot about the history of the cooking method we love.    Josh Schaub is the commissioner of the American Association of Professional Baseball.  Schaub oversees their  operations, media, expansion, revenue initiatives, technology enhancements and emergence, public relations, and relationships in professional baseball.  He is the former CEO and co-owner of the Joliet Slammers baseball club of the Frontier League, a board member of the Frontier League and Prospect Leagues, and has previously worked in the Milwaukee Brewers scouting department as an intern and associate scout. Schaub also previously clerked for the Northern League. Additionally, Schaub has served as a consultant and legal counsel to numerous professional baseball teams for both business, legal, and baseball matters.  We discuss this excellent alternative to the Major Leagues which for some baseball fans is an opportunity to attend live games and root for a local team they are missing with the MLB.     We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. In this chilling episode of "Anthology of Horror," our host, Spring Heeled Jack, delves deep into the haunted heart of Hollywood's cinematic crown jewel, Universal Studios. Drawing from Brian Clune's enlightening book, "Haunted Universal Studios," we're taken on a ghostly tour that reveals the studio is not only a birthplace of film legends but also a hotbed of supernatural occurrences. Our journey begins with a melodious introduction, as Spring Heeled Jack himself breathes new life into "Hotel California" by The Eagles and "California Dreamin'" by The Mamas and the Papas, setting the stage for an exploration of the thin veil between the living and the dead in California's most iconic film studio. As we traverse the shadowy backlot and sound stages, tales of apparitions and unexplained phenomena are unveiled. We learn of spirits that refuse to leave their beloved sets, spectral presences felt by actors and crew alike, and the eerie legacy left behind by Universal's most famous productions. The episode weaves a tapestry of historical tidbits, personal anecdotes from studio staff, and expert insights, painting a picture of a place where the magic of cinema and the mysteries of the afterlife collide. The episode's crescendo leads us to a contemplation of why these spirits may linger, exploring the deep emotional imprints left by the creative and tumultuous lives led within the studio's confines. As we reach the end, the atmosphere is charged with a blend of nostalgia and the ineffable, leaving listeners to ponder the porous boundaries between different realms.Closing the episode, is "Hundred Grand Baby" by Northern League, encapsulating the dreams and dramas that have played out in Universal Studios. The song serves as a fitting tribute to the aspirations, achievements, and, perhaps, the unrest of those spirits that call the studio their eternal home. This episode of "Anthology of Horror" not only entertains but invites us to look beyond the screen, into the shadows where the stories of the past linger, waiting for their moment in the spotlight once again.Support the showYe olde march shop https://www.aohpmerch.com/s/shopDemented Darkness https://open.spotify.com/show/2ausD083OiTmVycCKpapQ8Dark Side of the Nerd https://open.spotify.com/show/6cwN3N3iifSVbddNRsXRTuFoxhound43 https://rumble.com/user/Foxhound43

Carl looks forward to Man City appearing in the Northern League at some stage. Pete asks about Nigel Pearsons forearms and winning the Premier League, the tragic loss of their owner, an incredibly poignant 1881 banner moment and how the FFP rules seem to be to try to stop another team outside the top six/seven to repeat their success. The Prediction League sees Pete fail to control the proceedings per normal, John does some drawing (Badly Drawn Watford now has a copycat with felt tip pens!!!) as his printer isn't working and then goes to the pub, Ben and Jarvis make a trip to a local football ground, Phillip tries to make a draw prediction but is unreasonably prevented from doing so! Whoa, where has the summer gone? Just when we were getting into our summer groove, we get that breaking news - it's over, folks! But don't fret, because we've got Conor to keep the fun rolling. Conor, a die-hard sports enthusiast, is a treasure trove of sports trivia, and we go on quite the ride as we discuss everything from the Major League Baseball to the Northern League, and college teams like the Red Hawk and the Banana Slugs. And, oh boy, do we get into boxing as well, with Conor sharing his insight on Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali. Plus, we talk about the cool merch we've got for y'all! We took a stroll down memory lane and dug deep into the personal experiences that shape us. Conor recently had a fishing excursion and he shone with excitement as he narrated his thrilling time on the water. We also discussed the prospect of forming a league, and Conor shared some spine-chilling tales about a haunted house. There's also the haunted Wabasha Street Cave, believe it or not! Our conversation was full of cheeky banter, nostalgia, and camaraderie, encapsulating everything we love about our time together on the show. Lighthearted and entertaining, we also squeezed in a game of "name that tune" and discussed the joy of Beatles songs. A conversation with Conor wouldn't be complete without some popcorn talk and TikToks. We also gave shoutouts to Rory and the JCC. So, buckle up, because this episode will have you laughing, reminiscing, and perhaps even a tad spooked. Come and share this wonderful journey with us as we explore the world through Conor's vibrant lens. Let the good times roll!

In 2014, Major League Baseball's Official Historian John Thorn and veteran baseball journalist Alan Schwarz published an authoritative and thought-provoking list of "Baseball's 100 Most Important People" - including more than its fair share of surprisingly influential figures. Nestled between National Baseball Hall of Famers "Hammerin'" Hank Greenberg and "King" Kelly at number 79 on that list is this week's guest: "More than anyone, Miles Wolff is responsible for the modern renaissance of minor-league baseball, as it emerged from the lean years of the 1960s and '70s to the boom of the 1980s and '90s. Wolff bought the Carolina League's Durham Bulls for just $2,666 in 1979, nurtured it into a local success, and owned the franchise as it became a national symbol of the minor leagues after the release of the film "Bull Durham" in 1988. He sold the team in 1990 for $4 million just as the minors began to flourish again. "A baseball purist at heart, Wolff grew frustrated at the money- and marketing-driven approach exhibited by the regular minor leagues, whose clubs were beholden to the major-league organizations to which they fed players. (Communities rarely got to know the best players, because they were promoted to the next level within three or sixth months.) So in 1993, Wolff re-established the Northern League, a circuit in the upper Midwest made up of teams that operated outside the sphere of Organized Baseball. The Northern League's six clubs signed players — often minor-league veterans on their way down or overlooked collegians — to stock their rosters. The Northern League was an instant success and spawned imitators across the country. "Wolff's first baseball job came in 1971 as the general manager of the Double-A Savannah (Georgia) Braves, and he subsequently was a GM in Anderson, South Carolina., and Jacksonville, Florida. "Wolff also owned Baseball America, the Durham-based magazine of the minor leagues, for most of its lifetime. He bought the magazine from founder Allan Simpson in 1982 and served as president and publisher until selling the company in 2000." + + + PRE-ORDER Miles Wolff's soon-to-be-released memoir "There's a Bulldozer on Home Plate: A 50-Year Journey in Minor League Baseball" AND/OR the upcoming final (4th) edition of the indispensable "Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball: A Complete Record of Teams, Leagues and Seasons, 1876-2019" NOW!

Read on for today's agenda below prepared by David (thank you very much). - Retired US Diplomat to 5 different nations  David Hunter shares his knowledge, passion, interest, and experience.1)  Putin's Annexation of Four Ukrainian 'Regions' into Russia:  This past week, Russia formally annexed four new 'regions' in Ukraine's Donbas in'to Mother Russia.   They represent about 20% of the land mass of Ukraine.  This was following a bogus referendum conducted in just one week, where 'voters' chose 'Da' over  'Nyet' to becoming part of Russia.  More than 95% chose 'Da'.   And while a war was raging in that contested area of Ukraine.   Was the voting legitimate?  What happens next?2) Russian Neo-Nazis Committing Brutal Acts Against Ukrainian Prisoners:  As  just reported in UK newspapers,  ' Rusich'   is a neo-Nazi Russian 'militia' that is operating in border area of Ukraine.  It has  links to the Russian Imperial Movement (RIM) , a far right 'white nationalist'  group based in St. Petersburg, Russia.   This Rusich group has mutilated Ukrainian prisoners, before murdering them. Rusich was founded in St Petersburg, Russia in 2014 by former paratrooper Aleksei Milchakov and  co-founder  Yan Petrovsky .  What's going on? 3) Brazil's Presidential Elections Last Sunday:  Last Sunday, Brazil---a county with over 200 million people, making it the largest nation in S. America and fifth largest nation in the world ---voted for another President.  The current President is right-wing former military officer Jair Bolsonaro, called the "Trump of the Tropics .  He won last time by blocking his opponent from running,  after charging him with corruption.  That was Lula de Silva, who  had served as leftist President.  Lula is running against incumbent Bolsonaro again.  What are the results? And why is this election so important?    . 4)  Italy Elects  'Hard Right' Neo-Fascist Leader Giorgia Meloni as Next Prime Minister:  The 45 year old Ms. Giorgia Meloni, the female head of the 'Brothers of Italy Party', --- which has roots in the fascism of Mussolini--- was just elected to form a new government. She is in a coalition with Matteo Salvini's "Northern League" and Silvio Beriusconi's   "Force of Italy".  Both were former Prime Ministers, who are also  firm supporters of Vladimir Putin.   Will her election lead to Italy's no longer supporting Ukraine against Russia?

Nate Trosky and Trent Mongero are joined by Damon Lessler for Part 2! Damon Lessler recently accepted the title of hitting coach at Charleston Southern University in the Big South Conference.   Most recently Lessler coached in the Pac-12 conference at the University of California where he served as the Golden Bears' infield, catching & base running coach while assisting with the program's hitters. He was the team's third base coach & also dealt with player recruitment. Lessler spent three seasons in Bear Territory during a tenure that was highlighted by steady player development and Cal's first trip to an NCAA Regional since 2015. The Bears punched their ticket as an at-large bid and the No. 2 seed at the Fayetteville (Ark.) Regional after finishing fourth in the Pac-12 and carrying a No. 31 RPI ranking at the conclusion of the regular season. Cal's 2019 success continued into the summer when seven Bears were selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft, including first-round picks Andrew Vaughn (No. 3 overall, White Sox) and Korey Lee (No. 32 overall, Houston). Vaughn and Lee - both of which went undrafted out of high school - became the first duo in school history to be taken in the first round of the same draft. Vaughn, who was the program's highest-drafted player ever, was also named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for the second straight year. Lee became Cal's second catcher drafted in as many years, a credit to Lessler mentorship. Lessler additionally guided shortstop Cameron Eden, who batted .365 with a team-leading 73 hits, 20 stolen bases and eight home runs all while making a position change midseason to center field during his junior season. Eden went on to be a sixth round selection by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2019 MLB Draft. In 2018, Lessler worked closely with Cal's catchers as the Bears went 32-22 overall and 16-14 in the Pac-12. Cal catcher Tyrus Greene earned All-Pac-12 honors thanks to a season in which he hit .320. Greene committed just three errors, allowed only four passed balls, and went on to be drafted by the Chicago White Sox. A Bay Area native who hails from nearby Castro Valley, Calif., Lessler spent time as an assistant coach at San Jose State. He served as the Spartans' recruiting coordinator while also working with infielders, hitters and coaching third base. Prior to joining the Spartans, Lessler spent the 2016 season as an assistant coach at Cal Poly and worked in the same role at Southern Mississippi in 2015. In 2013 and 2014, he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Chico State and helped the Wildcats go a combined 80-33 in two seasons. Working again with infielders, he helped Chico State compile a .977 fielding percentage in 2014, a mark that ranked first in all of Division II baseball that year. Chico State reached the NCAA Division II West Region finals in 2013 and the Division II College World Series in 2014. A shortstop at Castro Valley High School, Lessler went on to play collegiately at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, Sonoma State and Mississippi Valley State. He went on to play professionally in the Northern League, the American Association and the Frontier League in addition to playing in five different countries. He transitioned to coaching in 2011. A 2006 graduate of Mississippi Valley State, Lessler earned his bachelor's degree in mass communications while also earning valedictorian honors from the university. In 2007, he earned a master's degree in sports administration from Southern Mississippi, where he also served as a graduate assistant while finishing his playing career. www.troskyranch.com https://troskybaseball.com/ https://coachmongero.com/ Thanks to our sponsors at: https://soldiersports.us/ https://winreality.com Use Code Trosky for one month free https://www.jaegersports.com/ https://qualityatbats.com/

Frederick William Luderus was born in Milwaukee in September 1885. The son of German immigrants, Luderus grew up in Milwaukee's German American community and as a teenager gained a reputation as a talented athlete. He loved the game of baseball and played first baseman in Milwaukee's sandlot leagues. While he enjoyed baseball, he had to earn a living and apprenticed in the plumbing trade. During those three years he played for Sault St. Marie, Grand Forks, and Winnipeg, but after each season he was back in Milwaukee working as a plumber. The Northern League folded after 1907.

Each April 15, Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated in every ballpark in America. It marks the day in 1947 when Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African American to play professional baseball, thus ending baseball's color barrier. Robinson has become an icon, his number 42 retired in every ballpark, to honor his trailblazing feat in both sports and racial justice. But four decades before Robinson's historic appearance on a Major League Baseball diamond, another African American ballplayer nearly broke baseball's color barrier — via Vermont. His name was William Clarence Matthews, and he was a nationally renowned baseball player for Harvard College. Several of Matthews's Harvard teammates went on to play in the MLB, but Matthews had to settle for playing professional ball in Burlington, Vermont, in the independent Northern League, which was integrated. Word of Matthews' feats on Vermont's diamonds spread. Then in 1905, a Boston newspaper reported the bombshell news that Matthews was about to be drafted by the Boston Nationals, a professional baseball team with a woeful record. But the deal was never signed, and Matthews, one of the greatest ballplayers of his era who was shut out of the professional game, went on to become a distinguished attorney and assistant U.S. attorney general. Matthews said presciently in 1905, “A Negro is just as good as a white man, and has just as much right to play ball.” It would take another 42 years for that right to be realized. The remarkable story of William Clarence Matthews was recently recounted in a lengthy article on mlb.com, “The Player Who Nearly Integrated Baseball in 1905.” The article is based on the research of Vermont baseball historian Karl Lindholm, who is at work on a book about Matthews. Lindholm, emeritus dean of advising and assistant professor of American Studies at Middlebury College, tells Matthews's story on The Vermont Conversation.

Since Trump's victory and the UK's Brexit vote, much of the commentary on the populist epidemic has focused on the emergence of populism. But, Lawrence Rosenthal argues, what is happening globally is not the emergence but the transformation of right-wing populism. Rosenthal, the founder of UC Berkeley's Center for Right-Wing Studies, suggests right-wing populism is a protean force whose prime mover is the resentment felt toward perceived cultural elites, and whose abiding feature is its ideological flexibility, which now takes the form of xenophobic nationalism. In 2016, American right-wing populists migrated from the free marketeering Tea Party to Donald Trump's "hard hat," anti-immigrant, America-First nationalism. This was the most important single factor in Trump's electoral victory and it has been at work across the globe. In Italy, for example, the Northern League reinvented itself in 2018 as an all-Italy party, switching its fury from southerners to immigrants, and came to power. Rosenthal paints a vivid sociological, political, and psychological picture of the transnational quality of this movement, which is now in power in at least a dozen countries, creating a de facto Nationalist International. In America and abroad, the current mobilization of right-wing populism has given life to long marginalized threats like white supremacy. The future of democratic politics in the United States and abroad depends on whether the liberal and left parties have the political capacity to mobilize with a progressive agenda of their own. Rosenthal discusses his new book, Empire of Resentment, with sociologist Harry Levine. ________________________________________________ Produced by Maddie Gobbo & Michael Kowaleski Theme: "I Love All My Friends," a new, unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. Can you imagine a far-right wing party and a populist left wing platform joining forces to make a government? This is what happened in Italy. OK, it is true, “The League' (formerly called ‘Northern League”) is not a classical far-right party. The same goes with the 5 stars Movement, which is not liberal on the Ocasio Cortez sense. Then again, we can say that the government coalition in Italy is, pretty much, something like ‘the odd couple'. The Eurozone crisis, the corruption and the disenchantment with the political elite has led to an odd situation in Italy, where the main political parties (Democratic Party, the centre-left, and Berlusconi's Forza Italia, the centre-right) had lost the voters' trust. The extremes have become the new mainstream. But the question is… Could Italy serve as a cautionary tale for other countries? Can we see other odd couple governments in other countries? How did this happen? In this video, we will tell you everything you need to know about Italian government.

The Days Ahead: Quieter week for big economic numbers. Watch for trade and updates on the Eurozone. One-Minute Summary. When markets crack, we know two things. One, the problems don't come from the last crisis (so no need to look in the MBS world). Two, they come from things you barely notice. Last week it was Argentina and Turkey. This week, it was Italy (see below). U.S. bonds promptly rallied 4.5% and the 10-Year Treasury yields, which many predicted would soar to 3% and beyond, fell to an intra-day low of 2.79%. Bonds got medieval on Tuesday and one Bond King had a very bad day. Domestic and international stocks and U.S. bonds finished more or less unchanged on the week. But there was plenty of action along the way. Small caps had another good week (they tend to not get riled by trade stuff) and are now some 500bps ahead of the large caps so far this year. The trade talk is not good. The U.S. went ahead with tariffs on steel from Canada, Mexico and the EU. We don't think they're going to take this one lying down. In past years, the parties would have taken the issues to the WTO and talked about it for a couple of years. This time Cecilia Malmstrom, the very accomplished EU Trade commissioner fired right back with, “When they say American (sic) first, we say Europe united.” So far markets have tended to view the trade talks as bluff followed by climb down. That’s worked. So far. Still, expect a lot more disconcerting headlines. 1. Markets are jumpy (Part 2): Here’s something you don't see very often. A G7 sovereign bond crashing in a single morning’s trade. As everyone knows by now, Italy is trying to form a government on a coalition of two parties. The Northern League (secession, pro-Russia, anti-GMO, lower taxes, Eurosceptic) and the 5-Star Movement (guaranteed minimum income, Green, unsure about immigration and mostly Eurosceptic) tried, failed and tried again to form a government. In Italy, winning parties must present their cabinet and government candidates to the President. He has veto power. And he used it. The fear then was another election in the fall with both parties running on an explicit “out-of-Euro” platform because…that’s the only thing these guys really agree on. Now we've seen Italian governments come and go and, with 42 Prime Ministers since 1945, a change of government in Italy passes as a Cabinet reshuffle elsewhere. And we don't really think this time is different. A government will form, it will make a few changes and it will argue with the EU about debt, growth and bond restructuring. --- If you want to join us live next time or get future updates about new episodes, subscribe to our email newsletter: bandjadvisors.com/subscribe Did you like this podcast? On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Dick Nichols, the correspondent for Spain and Catalonia for Green Left Weekly, and Sputnik news analyst Walter Smolarek. Yesterday’s Italian elections are set to produce a deadlocked parliament, as the populist Five Stars Movement and the far right Northern League surge, leaving the Center-Left bloc of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in an embarrassing third place. The Trump Administration and Congress have been working to dismantle the Affordable Care Act despite their failure to outright repeal the law. While some states have embraced this effort, others are pushing back. Leo Cuello, an attorney and the director of health policy for the National Health Law Program, and Mary Gerisch, an organizer and member chair of the Rights & Democracy health care justice team, join the show. The leaders of West Virginia teachers unions say that they will remain out on strike after the state senate voted to cut the five percent pay increase they negotiated with the governor. Meanwhile, teachers in Oklahoma are discussing a strike, inspired by West Virginia. Is this the beginning of a wave of teacher activism? Brian and John speak with Liz Davis, president of the Washington Teachers Union who has taught in DC public schools for 41 years, and Dr. Curry Malott, a professor of education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania where he is the mobilization chair of the faculty union.Today is the last day of the NAFTA talks between Canada, Mexico, and the United States. After intense anti-NAFTA rhetoric on the campaign trail, Trump has now taken the position that if what he calls “a new and fair NAFTA agreement” can be agreed upon, then he’ll exempt the two neighboring countries from the steel and aluminum tariffs. Pete Dolack, an activist and writer with Trade Justice New York Metro, and the author of “It’s Not Over, Learning from the Socialist Experiment,” and Jack Rasmus, a professor of economics at Saint Mary's College of California and author of “Central Bankers at the End of Their Ropes: Monetary Policy and the Coming Depression,” joins the show. The Israeli extreme right has a high profile at the ongoing annual conference of AIPAC, the largest pro-Israel lobby in the country, with a seminar being held today headlining some of the biggest names in the pro-Settler movement. This comes hours before Netanyahu and Trump are scheduled to meet here in Washington, with confrontation with Iran high on the agenda. Miko Peled, the author of “The General’s Son: A Journey of an Israeli in Palestine” and a new book called "Injustice: The Story of the Holy Land Foundation Five," joins Brian and John. In the first visit of high-ranking South Korean officials to North Korea since Kim Jong Un took office in 2011, South Korean National Security Office director Chung Eui-yong and intelligence agency head Suh Hoona led a delegation to North Korea to discuss a potential historic meeting of the leaders of both Koreas. Simone Chun, a fellow at the Korea Policy Institute and a member of the Korean Peace Network, joins the show.Venezuela’s presidential election, which had been scheduled for late April, has been postponed until May 20 as a faction of the opposition breaks ranks and decides to participate. Will the country’s Bolivarian Revolution continue its streak of electoral success? Can the country overcome economic turmoil? Brian and John speak with Lucas Koerner, an activist and writer for VenezuelAnalysis.com.

It's still only January but Tim Fuell and Swampy are discussing promotion from two very different perspectives. First up Morpeth Town Chairman Ken Beattie and his sleep-depriving decision to be made on whether to take promotion to the Northern Premier League and risk the demise of the club he loves and has built over years as a community hub or stay in the Northern League and risk the wrath of the FA in not accepting promotion which appears to be mandatory for those finishing in the promotion spots with a suitable ground. A very interesting debate. Next Ben Connell, who started a team with his mates and now finds himself as manager of the side being hailed the first to be promoted in the football pyramid. 17 wins from 17 for Colne Athletic in Division Three of the Essex and Suffolk Border League Division Three and still 5 games to play with the title potentially wrapped up this weekend. Finally, a chat with former Molesey, Basingstoke Town, Crawley Town, Whitehawk and now Eastbourne Borough FC midfielder Sergio Torres on why a documentary is being made on is life. From an Argentinean brick factory to Old Trafford, his is a story of boyhood dreams and self-belief, the crowdfunding project to make the documentary is well advanced but still needs pledges to make it happen.

"Making My Pitch: A Woman's Baseball Odyssey" tells the story of Ila Jane Borders, who despite formidable obstacles became a Little League prodigy, MVP of her otherwise all-male middle school and high school teams, the first woman awarded a baseball scholarship, and the first to pitch and win a complete men's collegiate game. After Mike Veeck signed Borders in May 1997 to pitch for his St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League, she accomplished what no woman had done since the Negro Leagues era: play men's professional baseball.  Borders played four professional seasons and in 1998 became the first woman in the modern era to win a professional ball game. Borders had to find ways to fit in with her teammates, reassure their wives and girlfriends, work with the media, and fend off groupies.  But these weren't the toughest challenges.  She had a troubled family life, a difficult adolescence as she struggled with her sexual orientation, and an emotionally fraught college experience as a closeted gay athlete at a Christian university. "Making My Pitch" shows what it's like to be the only woman on the team bus, in the clubhouse, and on the field.  Raw, open, and funny at times, her story encompasses the loneliness of a groundbreaking pioneer who experienced grave personal loss.  Borders ultimately relates how she achieved self-acceptance and created a life as a firefighter and paramedic and as a coach and goodwill ambassador for the game of baseball. Jean Hastings Ardell is an Author/Editor/Speaker/Researcher/Teacher.  She is co-chair of the NINE Spring Training Conference, and author of "Breaking into Baseball: Women and the National Pastime."
