We're back from ITHACON, but we mustn't dwell, no, not today! We can't! Not on Rex Manning Day! We're rewinding to 1995 at the height of the record store boom. Directed by Allan Moyle and written by Carol Heikkinen, with an ensemble cast including Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane, Johnny Whitworth, Robin Tunney, Renée Zellweger, and Liv Tyler, this comedy follows a group of record store employees through a wild twenty-four hours on that particular April 8th. Unfortunately, the film bombed spectacularly at the box office and was panned by critics at the time of release, but its eclectic soundtrack and stacked cast of future stars have made it into something of a cult favorite in the intervening years. But is this flick really The Breakfast Club for Elder Millennials, or does Empire Records belong in the bargain bin? We're indulging our sweet tooths (or sweet teeth?) with the origin story of everyone's favorite candy man! Join Timothée Chalamet as young Willy Wonka for the tale of chocolate, conspiracy, and creepy little orange men, along with a cast of assorted oddballs and character actors. Directed by Paddington and Paddington 2 helmer Paul King and produced by David Heyman, who just took over co-producing the Bond franchise, this film was sweetly received by audiences, who treated it to over half a billion at the box office. But are our hosts sweet on the early adventures of the candy man made famous by Gene Wilder? Or does this saccharine prequel leave us with a toothache? ITHACON 48 is THIS WEEKEND! Beaver Fever continues to hold sway over Legends Podcast as we visit the wintry woods of Northern Wisconsin for an ultra-indie throwback movie about an applejack brewer turned trapper who contends with the forces of nature. Directed by Mike Cheslik and starring Ryland Tews, the film draws inspiration from a myriad of sources, including the works of Abbott and Costello, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Looney Tunes, and the Three Stooges, as well as wilderness movies like The Revenant and survival role-playing video games, this black-and-white 2022 release has almost no dialogue and very little plot. Off a budget of only $150,000, it grossed over a million in limited screenings, scored a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has earned comparisons to the early films of Robert Rodriguez, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Sam Raimi, and Peter Jackson. But how will our hosts react when confronted with the sound and the fury that is Hundreds of Beavers? ITHACON 48 is April 5-6, 2025, at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY! We're all back on the ‘cast for an indie horror comedy about a bunch of horny college kids who do battle with an undead colony of beavers that have been altered by toxic waste. And we're all just as eager to hear Lobster's full report from SXSW. So sit back, relax, and chew on some wood while finding out how we felt about Zombeavers! In 2024, just last year, several animated films from all over the world found their way to Oscar nominations. Tonight we wonder if robots would survive better in the wild than we would. We're talking about the animated adaptation of Peter Brown's beloved novel. Directed and Co-Written by Chris Sanders The writer/Director behind The Croods, How to Train Your Dragon, and everything Lilo & Stitch, and featuring Lupita Nyong'o as Roz the Robot, Kit Conner as Brightbill, Pedro Pascal as Fink, as well as the voices of Catherine O'Hara, Matt Berry, Bill Nighy and Ving Raimes, this film answers the age-old question: What happens when a highly advanced piece of technology is dropped into the wilderness with zero WiFi? We are diving into the breathtaking animation, the emotional storytelling, and whether this truly captures your heart. Did it make us laugh? Cry? Reconsider our relationships with raccoons? Let's discuss! So, power up, recalibrate your circuits, and let's get wild with The Wild Robot! ITHACON 48 is April 5-6, 2025, at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY! We're venturing to Garfagnana, Italy, in the Year of Our Lord 1347, for a raunchy comedy based on The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. In the film, three medieval nuns lead a simple life in their convent until a virile young servant who's been forced into hiding by his angry lord appears, and the repressed nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse, and wicked revelry. The film, written and directed by Jeff Baena, has an all-star cast, including Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci, Dave Franco, Jemima Kirk, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, and Nick Offerman. Baena, who passed away earlier this year, was married to co-star Aubrey Plaza. In their review, the Catholic League called the film “pure trash.” But is the price of admission into this Garden of Earthly Delights worth the penance, or do we love the sin but hate the sinner? If you are in crisis, you should call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or text the Crisis Text Line (text HELLO to 741741). In 2002, Robin Williams was in his era of playing against type with roles in the Christopher Nolan thriller Insomnia, and in this film about a lonely photo minilab employee who becomes obsessed with a young family. Co-starring Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, and Gary Cole, this pic written and directed by Mark Romanek succeeded critically and commercially, and it was also the only film that Robin Williams ever recorded a DVD commentary for. Now we're seeing what develops when we take a closer look at One Hour Photo! Say cheese! ITHACON 48 is April 5-6, 2025, at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY! In honor of Disney's Gargoyles 30th Anniversary - and Lobster's recent panel at ITHACON - we're watching the four-part “City of Stone” saga from the classic Disney Afternoon series. When Demona broadcasts a magic spell that turns every human in Manhattan to stone at night, the Gargoyles must team up with their enemy, Xanatos, to break the spell. Meanwhile, the nature of Demona and Macbeth's relationship is revealed via flashbacks to medieval Scotland. Incorporating fantasy, sci-fi, mythology, and Shakespeare, Gargoyles ran for 78 episodes, boasted a Marvel Comics tie-in, a video game, and toys. Now, at Dynamite Entertainment, the Gargoyles live again! In addition to the best-selling comics, Gargoyles fans have enjoyed a recently released line of NECA toys, Funko Pop! figures, Q-Figs, and a re-released video game, with a live-action reboot on the way from James Wan and Gary Dauberman. We're truly entering a new Golden Age of Gargoyles! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Please subscribe and give us a positive review. In the final episode of ITHACONversations for Ithacon 44 Edward sits down with three of his classmates from the Ithacon class at Ithaca College. This class is totally unique as it is the only college course in the country specifically about the business and culture of comic book fan conventions. These four students, along with their classmates and professors, were involved heavily in the planning and execution of Ithacon 44. This week on the penultimate episode of ITHACONversations I share my final interview from Ithacon 44. My guest is Walter Simonson, a legendary comic book artist and writer most well known for his run on Marvel's Thor from 1983-1987. During this time he created many ideas that have inspired the cinematic version of the character seen in Avengers: Endgame. He has also worked on Marvel's Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and DC's Superman, Batman, Metal Man, and Manhunter. His Thor art was also used as the poster for Ithacon 44! On this week's episode of ITHACONversations I talk to two people who have made major contributions to the Man of Steel. First is Louise Simonson, one of the featured guests of Ithacon 44. She is a comics legend, having worked as an editor for Marvel comics on titles like the Uncanny X-Men, as well as writing and creating characters like Marvel's Power Pack, Apocalypse, and Cable, as well as DC's Steel. She has also written for Spider-Man, Star Wars, the Fantastic Four, and Wonder Woman. My second guest on this episode is known as Brooklyn's number one Superman fan, and judging by his work that is possibly an understatement. For over 30 years, Sid Friedfertig has been collecting the Superman newspaper strips that were originally printed from 1939-1966. Most of these strips were thought to be lost and haven't been read by anyone other than Friedfertig in over half a century. With many strips written by Superman co-creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, these are major pieces of comics history, almost lost to time. Friedfertig's collections of Superman strips are a major undertaking and he talks all about it in this episode. You can buy Sid Friedfertig's books on Amazon. This week on ITHACONversations, Edward sits down with Hart Seely and Jamal Igle of Ahoy Comics. Ahoy is a Syracuse-based comic book company that recently launched its second wave of titles. They were also a featured publisher at Ithacon 44. Hart is a former reporter for the Syracuse Post-Standard and he's also written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, National Lampoon, for Nation Public Radio, and more. He's currently the publisher of Ahoy comics. Jamal is a veteran comic book artist who has worked on several big name properties like DC's Firestorm, Zatanna, Superman, and Supergirl. He's the creator of books like Molly Danger, Venture, and Black. Currently he is the artist for Ahoy's The Wrong Earth. Follow Hart:@SeelySays on Twitter! Follow Jamal:@JAMALIGLE on Twitter! Welcome to episode #14 where we meet special guest Tamar Shapiro-Tamir from Ithaca, NY. Tamar is a playwright and avid reader of all types of literature with a lot to say about Harry Potter, folk literature, the theater, and her own personal story. Whether you are a long time listener or new to the podcast there is a bit of everything in this episode that captures the spirit of PW! Insidee the Pensieve Tamar displays an exceptional grasp on how our own personal experience is connected to the larger world and how literature is a bridge between the two. In Voldemort's corner we explore the darker side of that equation in considering the roots of political corruption when stories out of touch with the real world influence the everyday workings of government. In that spirit I review Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s text "Where Do We Go From Here" and highlight his psychological acumen. I was inspired by my visit with Tamar to write another wizard rock tune I call "Cursed Boomerang" that I feature before we wrap up. Potterwatch will be at the 42nd Ithacon comic book convention on March 25th at Emerson Suites on the Ithaca College campus, come on over if you are in the area!
