We're venturing to Garfagnana, Italy, in the Year of Our Lord 1347, for a raunchy comedy based on The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. In the film, three medieval nuns lead a simple life in their convent until a virile young servant who's been forced into hiding by his angry lord appears, and the repressed nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse, and wicked revelry. The film, written and directed by Jeff Baena, has an all-star cast, including Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci, Dave Franco, Jemima Kirk, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, and Nick Offerman. Baena, who passed away earlier this year, was married to co-star Aubrey Plaza. In their review, the Catholic League called the film “pure trash.” But is the price of admission into this Garden of Earthly Delights worth the penance, or do we love the sin but hate the sinner?   If you are in crisis, you should call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or text the Crisis Text Line (text HELLO to 741741). St Benedict quotes from and alludes to the psalms more than any other book of the Scripture. In this retreat I want to speak about the importance of the longest psalm 118 for St Benedict. He assigned it to the Little Hours for Sunday and Monday. He also drew from it something about the structure of liturgical prayer and more importantly still it played a part in  his thinking about monastic vocation, formation and profession.

It's difficult to describe the tone of this bawdy, outrageously gigglesome medieval romcom: it's played straight, for laughs, while deeply subversive, satirical and quietly hilarious, just like its 14th century source material, The Decameron. The brilliant comic acting and directing maximize the satire, connecting ancient social norms with current religious, sexual and gender politics. The result is quietly magnificent. CW: kink and sex, religious satirehttps://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comY'all! I cannot tell you how many times I've reread the Elizabeth Lowell medieval romance trilogy series. "Simon the Loyal has vowed never to love, for love makes a warrior weak..."The Decameron, Vols. I & II (English translation) are available free as downloadable ebooks on Project Gutenberg.Decameron Web, a project maintained by Brown University, is chock-full of interesting facts about the book and its text: its inspiration, the Italian culture surrounding author Giovanni Boccaccio, the motifs and themes of the allegory, and a fascinating look at sex and the clergy during medieval history. This corny Virgin Territory trailer emphasizes the bawdy farce and clergy gone wild of this 2007 romcom, also based on The Decameron. It looks like a soft porno about the Black Death, but seems equally randy if that's your mood.As usual The Little Hours trailer really doesn't capture the complex tone of this movie, so let's take a look at a few scenes.John C Reilly's face throughout this scene makes the whole thing. Well that, and Dave Franco's innocent yet hilarious way of describing 69 and jizz kink to a priest.Parts of this movie could be described as Sisters Behaving Badly and no one behaves worse than Aubrey Plaza in a habit. She's a reluctant, eye-rolling bride of Christ in the most hilariously inappropriate way in this scene, poking fun at cloistered clergy's isolation, sexual repression and fear of the secular world in medieval culture.A fun interview with Seth Meyers and Dave Franco where he describes his wife Alison Brie's reaction to his threesome scene in the movie. Oh yes ladies and gentlemen, it's a hot one. Very little consent, sadly, but very hot.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends! With a background in photojournalism and documentary, cinematographer Quyen Tran is drawn to emotional stories and giving voice to victims. But she also has a talent for shooting comedies, such as The Little Hours, the series Camping, and most recently the hit movie Palm Springs. Palm Springs is a comedy about two people trying to escape a time loop, reliving the same day over and over, like Groundhog Day. The film became hugely popular and critically acclaimed during the pandemic, probably because it resonated with everyone locked down and feeling like each day was the same. Palm Springs was shot on a relatively small budget and a pretty fast schedule, so Q was able to call in a few favors to help stretch the budget. She enjoyed working with Cristin Milioti, Andy Samberg and JK Simmons, who was a great foil for Andy Samberg's character. A great deal of the movie was actually improvised- while it was definitely scripted, there were many alternate takes that made it into the movie. Since the film is about a constantly repeating day, the actors improvising different takes kept the story fresh and each take could be a bit different each time. Q also shot a few episodes of the Netflix series Unbelievable, a true story about a young woman who is raped and then recants her story. Years later, two female detectives track the serial rapist and prove her story true. The series won a Peabody Award for showing a humanized exploration of rape survival. Q and director Lisa Cholodenko knew they wanted very literal and subjective camerawork, making the camera seem like it was always from the character Marie's point of view of being sexually assaulted. They had the actress Kaitlyn Dever block scenes in pre-production so that she could help contribute and feel comfortable in the environment. Q chose to place a camera under a table in the interrogation scene so that it could still get a close up on her face, and give a feeling of disembodiment and detachment from her body. The FX/Hulu series A Teacher explores grooming and sexual abuse, but this time with a male victim. Quyen shot the show in a naturalistic way as she did with Unbelievable. She wanted to stay true to the material and help the viewer emphasize with the victim. One of Q's passions in life is cooking and baking, and during the pandemic in her down time, Q and her friend and fellow DP, Jeanne Tyson, decided to start Doughrectors of Photography. In exchange for a donation to the LA Food Bank or other charity such as Vote Blue, patrons receive a loaf of homemade sourdough and/or cookies. Doughrectors has now donated over 100,000 meals to the L.A. Food Bank, and they continue to bake and raise money. Most recently, Quyen was shooting Maid with director John Wells in Victoria, BC. They had to follow strict COVID protocols, including quarantining for two weeks before shooting. She was able to have a lot of prep time over Zoom with the director. The crew had to have masks on at all times of course, and were tested 3 times per week, taking their time and limiting the amount of people in the space. Mo-vember is back! This year, we’re starting off with two Decameron-themed sex comedies. First, Doc and Nina discuss 2007’s Virgin Territory starring Hayden Christensen and Mischa Barton. They’ll go over this movie’s costume choices, the naked and horned-up nuns, and Tim Roth’s decision to play this movie as straight as possible. This one’s got Nina fired up and angry folks, so prepare for a rant! Then, they’ll finish up with a better movie, 2017’s The Little Hours. This movie, while also about randy nuns, uses a combination of anachronistic dialogue and some historical accuracy to tell a story. This one’s actually enjoyable! Warning: this episode contains a fair amount of humorous, though not descriptive, acknowledgement of sex. If that’s not your bag, you may want to sit this one out. Show Notes Virgin Territory (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437954/) The Little Hours (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5666304/)  The Decameron: Day 3, Story 1 on Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/files/23700/23700-h/23700-h.htm#THE_FIRST_STORY3) Recommendations Yes, God, Yes (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8949056/) The Decameron Project (https://www.patreon.com/m/4119564/posts ) Have a recommendation for us? Alan is highly regarded for his vital, re-imagined versions of classic plays and musicals. His work tends to mine the present-day relevance of a story, challenging people’s memories and expectations, so that they hear and experience the words and ideas anew. His style invites audiences to lean forward and participate rather than just observe, breaking down boundaries between audience and actors, encouraging hearts to flutter and conversation to ensue. His 10-person Oliver! was solicited by Stage Entertainment and had its inaugural production at the Human Race Theatre Company, with choreography by Spencer Liff. He worked in conjunction with the Lerner Estate on his post-modern and highly celebrated Camelot for the Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago, where he also mounted a provocative, madcap, Vegas-themed Joseph…Dreamcoat and a rather progressive and highly stylized take on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.Alan has directed plays and musicals for Laguna Playhouse, Olney Theatre, Arkansas Repertory, Walnut Street Theatre, The New Theatre, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Virginia Musical Theatre, 3D Theatricals, Texas Shakespeare Festival, and the John W.
