Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris talk to Lizzie and Cindy for Basic Folk on-board the Cayamo cruise in front of a live audience. We get down to business in addressing NICE things by asking Mary what kind of shoes she's wearing – as she has a reputation for enjoying the good stuff, especially on her feet. After that, we asked and Jaimee Harris enthusiastically answered the age-old question: What is the correct number of shoes to bring on tour? They generously share about their relationship, which began two years after they met as teacher (Mary) and student (Jaimee) in a songwriting workshop. Interestingly enough, both Harris and Gauthier have been playing music for about the same amount of time, despite their age difference. Jaimee, mid 30s, and Mary, early 60s, are also both sober and expand on what it's like to be students of their own patterns. We also talk about their touring life, songwriting processes, and the alchemy of transforming personal trauma into art. We get to hear the very cute story of how Jaimee first heard of Mary Gauthier, by way of Ray Waylie Hubbard's song "Name Dropping." Mary, in turn, talks about her first impressions of Jaimee's songwriting (spoiler alert: she was completely floored). They share their future plans with us where they say there will be a Harris-Gauthier album, right after Jaimee completes the three records in her head and Mary writes her second book. They also share what it's been like when they are together and around people who know Mary (who has a higher profile in the Americana world), but don't know Jaimee. Each comment that they feel for partners in relationships with people who are "actually famous." We end with a great Lightning Round, a game we like to play with partners called "Which One." We think they might have enjoyed that, because on the last day of the cruise Mary, getting off the boat, shouted, "Thanks for the interview! The Lightning Round was a real moment!!"Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Acclaimed songwriter Mary Gauthier returns to Outpost in the Burbs on March 28th, along with Jaimee Harris. We spoke with Mary about the incredible work she's done through eleven albums, a lifetime of touring and songwriting, and her recent book Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting. Mary's approach leads with the heart - her empathy and compassion for her subjects shine through on songs like “Mercy Now” which we hear in the episode, and will likely hear at the concert as well.
Jaimee Harris is a singer and songwriter from Waco, Texas, who is one of my new favorite artists. Her debut full length record Red Rescue was released in 2018 to well deserved high praise. For whatever reason, that album snuck by my ears, but her follow up Boomerang Town, which came out last year got its hooks in me on the first listen. As fate would have it, Jaimee was on tour with the legendary Mary Gauthier at that very moment and the tour was stopping just down the road. Thankfully, Jaimee agree to sit down with us at Gram Parson's Derry Down in Winter Haven, FL, earlier this month for a delightful conversation about writing, teaching, her incredible new record Boomerang Town, and of course, pinball. The Marinade is a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people. Each episode we welcome musicians, actors, comedians, authors, visual artists, filmmakers- anyone who creates art to talk about how and why we make stuff. Follow Jaimee Harris at: https://www.jaimeeharris.com/ Support The Marinade on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/marinadepodcast Find a pinball game near you: https://pinballmap.com/

Back at 30A Songwriters Festival, I was honored to welcome an artist whose words and music I have admired for many years now: the incredible Mary Gauthier along with rising Americana star and partner Jaimee Harris. Mary shares fascinating insight into her writing approach while writing her best-selling memoir 'Saved By a Song', an emphasis on energy, recovery, and mental health that carries both their lives. Mary and Jaimee also discuss the growth of Nashville and its parallel growing pains with social issues and treat us to a stunning rendition of the new single 'Some Times' For more on Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris, visit: www.marygauthier.com and www.jaimeeharris.com
Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. With first guitar stories by: Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, David Knopfler, Colin Linden (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Johnny Hickman (Cracker), Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Paul Langlois (Tragically Hip), Gord Sinclair (Tragically Hip), Tom Wilson (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Kevn Kinney (Drivin & Cryin), Liona Boyd, Leeroy Stagger, Moe Berg and Kris Abbott (The Pursuit of Happiness), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Finny McConnell (The Mahones), Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Dave Genn (54-40), Skye Wallace, Alun Piggins, Mark Stuart, Stacey Earle, Chris and Eleanor Masterson (The Mastersons), Preston and Alan Glass, Barney Bentall, Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly), Mr. Zero (The Kings), Jaimee Harris, Andrew Hyatt, Terry Draper (Klaatu), Dan “Chewy” Mongrain (Voi Vod), Sal Costa (My Darkest Days, Bonds of Mara), Michael Mckenzie (Lowest of the Low), François Lamoureux, Jordon Zadorozny (Blinker the Star), Ed Ringwald (Gordon Lightfoot), Joel Plaskett, Neil Osborne (54-40), Carl Harvey (Toots & the Maytals), Don Ross, Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), Darrell Scott, Stephen Fearing (Blackie & the Rodeo Kings), Ethan Ives (Car Seat Headrest), Jeffrey Trott (Sheryl Crow), Julian Taylor, David Pulkingham, Brian Howes (DDT), Gary Lee Connor (Screaming Trees), Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde), Pete Yorn, Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar), David Baerwald, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers (The Sinners), Serena Ryder, Myles Zuniga (Fastball), Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Hayes Carll, Stuart Cameron (Crash Test Dummies), Myles Goodwin (April Wine), Brian and Bruce Good (The Good Brothers), Adrian Eccleston (Drake, The Weeknd), and many more. NPR has separately crowned both Jaimee Harris and Mary Gauthier with some well-deserved accolades over the last few years: The former was recently referred to as "the next queen of Americana-folk" (thanks to a new album, Boomerang Town, dropping on February 17th), while the latter's "The War After The War" (from her record Rifles & Rosary Beads, co-written entirely with U.S. veterans and their families) won the organization's coveted Song of the Year prize in 2018. Together, they've forged an artistic and romantic relationship that has helped their individual careers thrive. On this episode, the pair discuss their appreciation for vinyl, supporting each other in sobriety, and how artificial intelligence will change the future of songwriting.
On this episode of 'Why We Write with Kim Ruehl,' singer-songwriter Jaimee Harris discusses her new album growing up in a tiny Texas town, wrestling with worthiness, and figuring out how deep a song can go.

Today's episode of the My Top Five Records podcast features Jaimee Harris. Born in Waco, TX, to Austin and now in Nashville, I was stoked to have her in person to do the podcast. I loved the way that she took the time to revisit her records. She is a songwriter's songwriter. My favorite thing she said was “Fiction is the super highway to the truth.” So true!! And as a child, she asked for a Pegasus. A flying horse. Late in season one, I implemented quizzes into the mix and this will continue on future podcasts and this will continue for the foreseeable future. Don't matter what I'm going to ask. It's all fun and smiles. If you're digging on what we're laying down, please give us a review on iTunes. You can find My Top Five Records pretty much anywhere you listen to podcasts but if you were to give a star for each one of your top five records on the Apple/iTunes platform (that's five stars!) would be super appreciated! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/my-top-five-records/id1494022573 https://www.jaimeeharris.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jaimeeharris/ https://www.facebook.com/jaimeeharrismusic https://thebiggunshow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/thebiggunshowband/ https://www.instagram.com/thebiggunshowband/
This week, the show dials into the Nashville studio of one of the most gifted songwriters and empathic storytellers of her generation: Mary Gauthier. While Mary has become known for her darkly honest tales of overcoming addiction and seeking truth and joy after overcoming her troubled upbringing in Louisiana, she was nominated for a Grammy for her devastating record Rifles & Rosary Beads (co-written with U.S. veterans and their loved-ones) and her new record may be her most surprising and moving collection yet. Dark Enough To See The Stars, which drops June 3rd on Thirty Tigers, is in many ways an unabashed romance album, celebrating, in her own sardonic John Prine-meets-Anthony Bourdain style, how lovely it can be to find true love and creative joy at long last. During the pandemic she began performing a weekly stream with her amor, the talented songwriter Jaimee Harris, called Sundays with Mary - and while Gauthier has now returned to the road, the cathartic weekly song sharing show has continued too. Harris helped write the swoon-worthy traveling song “Amsterdam” on the newest LP.Gauthier's road to stability and creative contentment was a long one. As she gamely explains in this intense conversation, she made the leap to leave the relentless life of being a cook and restaurant owner (and partaker in too many illegal substances) and devoted herself to songwriting after getting arrested at thirty. Was she an instant hit on folk stages in her then base of Boston? Not exactly. In fact, she couldn't step on any stage without shaking. But she kept at it and the stories flowed. Early tours with Prine gave her confidence. Her breakout record Mercy Now (2005) chronicles her technicolor debauched early years with the clear-eyed grace of the newly sober, trying to give forgiveness to her troubled family and to herself for making it through. Being an openly gay songwriter, she took early inspiration from her heroes the Indigo Girls who showed her there was a place for a new kind of empowered songwriting, not just for women, but for anyone who wanted to look deeper into what women are experiencing behind closed doors. If Gauthier has one superpower as a songwriter it's her ability to empathize with everyone around her - even the troubled soldiers who she teamed up with on Rifles & Rosary Beads. We have way more in common with each other than many may think - overcoming trauma is pretty damn universal. Her book Saved By A Song: The Art And Healing Power Of Songwriting is her most powerful collection of stories and may explain best how her art has evolved in the last two decades, plus on the road.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-show-on-the-road-with-z-lupetin1106/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
This week I got to talk with Jaimee Harris. Jaimee is a phenomenal songwriter with a wonderful voice and a deep passion for music. Her 2018 album, “Red Rescue,” is an amazing collection of awe-inspiring songwriting and musicality that I highly recommend. Her mix of blunt relatability, beautiful imagery, and master-level storytelling is rare and refreshing. No matter what kind of music you like you can find a Jaimee Harris song that you love. I hope you check out her music if you haven't already. You can go to jaimeeharris.com to learn more about her and as always email me at jack@jackbarksdale.com for any questions or show ideas.

Her debut album Red Rescue was one of the top Americana albums that year. The Congress House Sessions sophomore album released in January. An incredible release, with a stripped-down version of Red Rescue.Jaimee has earned the moniker “The Next Queen of Americana Folk” by many industry watchers. In May, I left my job to pursue music full time. By August, I was on a musical rocket ship, opening shows all over the world for Mary Gauthier, who received a GRAMMY nomination in December of 2018.On paper—and on social media—it looked like a dream come true. In a lot of ways, it was. But in reality, I felt like I was drowning. — Jaimee HarrisOn the heels of her debut album Red Rescue, hailed by many as one of the top Americana albums of 2018, Jaimee Harris does not disappoint with the release of The Congress House Sessions, a thoughtful, intimate EP with stripped-down recordings of some of her most requested songs. These new recordings, recorded at the storied Congress House Studio by Mark Hallman (Carole King, Ani DiFranco, Eliza Gilkyson) and Andre Moran (Sarah Borges, Rickie Lee Jones), feature some of Austin's favorite players, including Jane Ellen Bryant and Kris Nelson on backing vocals, Ray Bonneville on harmonica, Brian Patterson on electric guitar, and Sammy Powell on piano. Don't let the healthy list of players mislead you; this is no large, speaker-rattling production. Longtime friends add color and texture, but what you'll hear is Harris and her guitar, delivering her songs in a setting closer both to what they were at their inception, alone in her room with a guitar, and how they have developed after a few years acclimating to performing without a band.Jaimee Harris loves fronting a band, and it shows. During the years she built a devoted critical and popular following in Austin, Texas, she fronted a slate of seasoned musicians with admirable swagger. When she alighted upon the scene, this jaded music city, replete with (and weary of) singer-songwriters, woke up and took notice. Here, finally, was a new voice—yes, her singing voice is noteworthy: rich, sonorous, full, delivering a uniquely stylized, throaty tone—but equally important, here was the new voice of a noteworthy writer and performer. If you meet Harris today, you'll want to be her friend. And no matter what part of the country you're in, if you spend a day with her, she will convince you to meet up at a nearby roller coaster park/pinball arcade/skeeball hall she happens to know is awesome. She will share embarrassing stories and laugh at your worst jokes (either because she finds them funny or because she finds hilarious how bad your jokes are). Later, when you watch her sing, she'll break your heart, cradle your heart, win your heart, then break it all over again. The next day, you wouldn't be the first to feel jealous. This friendly, breezy, beautiful swirl of platinum hair, impossibly high cheekbones, and a winning smile has it too easy, you think. Talent and looks? Gag me. While a cliché in this age of ubiquitous self-improvement empathy memes, it holds true that you never know what someone is going through or has been through.
Jaimee Harris calls her style of music Folk and Roll. She had one of Americana's best debut records with her album Red Rescue and has followed it up with some stripped down versions of those songs on her new record The Congress House Sessions . She shares her story and the stories behind her remarkable songs.
