One NZ's earnings are up, but it's outlook for 2025 isn't as positive. The teleco's operating earnings jumped 13% to $600 million in the year to March 31st, 2024. However, they've predicted flat earnings for 2025, somewhere between $580 million and $620 million. One NZ CEO Jason Paris told Mike Hosking that they're calling it flat for next year as they think the economy will continue to be a bit challenging. He said they're lucky that they're an essential service, but they will be tightening their own belts and ensuring they're running as efficiently as possible to mitigate the impact of any future economic strain. Telecommunications company One NZ, formerly Vodafone, has topped the Commerce Commissions rankings for poor cellphone customer service. The watch dog has released its first dashboard based on a survey of 2,400 consumers. The results show One NZ has the most customers with service issues, they are least likely to recommend their provider to others, and they have the lowest levels of satisfaction with the time it takes to resolve their complaints. And it also got the lowest ranking for staff knowledge and helpfulness. One NZ chief executive, Jason Paris, speaks to Lisa Owen. Today's guest is an entrepreneurial force from MN (the silicon valley of painting.) He started with a student painting franchise in college and then started his own painting business after graduating with an Economics degree. And it grew fast, and his quick growth led him to found a holdings company with 4 of his best friends where they now make investments in other painting companies around the nation as well as investing in multifamily real estate. His job title reads 'synergy and memes' and he serves as an active board member at Aleph, his holding company and a volunteer board member at the PCA. And as quick aside, I first joined the PCA which was called the PDCA 26 years ago, and he's been instrumental in the turnaround that has happened with the PCA. But beyond business he is interested in realizing human potential through ultra endurance races, founding family legacy by making family meetings cool again, and conquering the fear of mammon, which we'll need to unpack for everybody, by building assets in the trades and volunteering a the PCA. Quite simply, he embodies innovation, leadership and commitment to making a positive impact. A few of the topics we cover in this episode are • Keys to Paris Painting breaking the $10M mark • Investing in painting businesses. What is Aleph? • Ultra endurance races • Heath regiments - Breakfast smoothies, cold tub, etc. • Current bible reading • Current thesis on how to improve the painting industry. At the end of each week, Mike Hosking takes you through the big-ticket items and lets you know what he makes of it all. The King's Coronation: 10/10 Its value was in its beauty, its history and the fact most of us had never seen one before. It was everything the royal family and Britain do well. Defence: 7/10 The Government's best moment of the week by a long way. A practical solution, handing out major pay rises to stop people leaving. Meka Whaitiri: 2/10 All that's wrong with politics these days. Displays of contempt, the Māori Party lied to the speaker and the rules around desertion clearly don't work. This is the part that was missed - if the numbers were different in the parliament, this could have been a constitutional crisis. Kiri Allan, Jan Tinetti, Meka Whaitiri and Willie Jackson: 2/10 Between their various scandals, misdeeds and sloppiness it simply reminds us what a low rent lot we have running the place. Wayne Smith: 6/10 I think he may have a point about rugby. And given what he did for the All Blacks and the Black Ferns, who can argue with him? Jason Paris: 6/10 His rant was driven by passion, which is no bad thing, but cheating is a deliberate act. And on that he has no evidence, hence, the trouble he has potentially found himself in. CO2: 2/10 Another fallout from the Marsden closure. A country that can't brew its beer is not a proper country, is it? The rich pay more tax open letter: 1/10 I despair. One of the country's biggest telco's has dialled up Elon Musk to help with Aotearoa's patchy cell coverage and end blackspots. One New Zealand, previously known as Vodafone, has signed a deal with the Musk's US firm SpaceX, meaning its mobile network will work with the company's next generation Starlink satellites from late next year. Due to the country's unique geography One says only about 50 percent of the landmass currently has coverage. And recent extreme weather events have raised serious questions about a lack of network resilience after communications went down for days in some areas. One New Zealand's chief executive Jason Paris talks to Lisa Owen.
