After being convicted of the 1986 murder of 20-year-old college student Scott Macklem in a college parking lot in Michigan, Temujun Kensu yelled "They got the wrong man. I'll beat them on appeal" as court officers took him away. More than three decades later, Temujin is still waiting. Why? Kamala Avila-SalmonFounder of KAS KAS Productions“Black is Not a Genre”Our first meeting on Zoom took place the day the fires broke in PP; in fact, I received an alert on my phone about the Pacific Palisades Fire and asked Kamala, who was on the Westside, if she heard anything, smelled anything …and as I wrapped our first conversation, the fire had spread and the winds in my neighborhood were increasing. I remember recording an Instagram about how elated I was about this talk, and noticing the crazy winds off my deck, at that time 40 mph. History was made that day, with the start of one of the worst California fires ever, and they were spreading…A month later, on MLK Day, we recorded this conversation. Significant in so many ways.Highlights: The Concept of 'White as Neutral' in Storytelling The Importance of Diverse Narratives Intersectionality and Identity The Misrepresentation of DEI The Role of Youth in Storytelling The Future of Storytelling and Inclusivity Navigating Race and Identity in Conversations Advice for Aspiring CreativesTwo Important humorous notes: Koalas are not from Jamaica, they are from Australia, but KAMALA is from Jamaica. Also, she lived in Queens (a borough in New York ) but she is also a “QUEEN” who is from the country of Jamaica, not Jamaica, Queens. “But it also really jives with the way that I think about problems and think about situations… from a very sort of 360 lens.” “Colorblind Ideology….what's wrong with saying black?” “You know… for me, storytelling is the most effective canvas that we have for social change. That is the thing that brought me to the industry. “And those of us that work in entertainment and in content have the privilege and the responsibility of shaping culture.” “Black is not a genre. I still don't know anything about the movie. If you tell me it's a black movie.”Black: Represents the Resilient people whose existence as a nation is honored and affirmed by the existence of a flag. Red: Symbolizes the blood of innocent Black lives that have been shed throughout history. Yellow: Stands for optimism, justice and equality for everyone. Green: Symbolizes Africa's rich greenery and other natural resources. https://parade.com/living/black-history-month-colorsThis year's Black History Month theme is "African Americans and Labor." Joining Jayson today is Jason Usry, the creator, the producer, writer and head elf of the true crime, satire podcast Santa Maybe, a Criminal Jason has been an audio producer for more than half a dozen popular podcasts including several popular true crime podcasts. Jason grew up in a small town in Georgia where he learned the power of writing to help heal and entertain people. After watching the movie, The Titanic, Jason wrote his first screenplay and probably his second and many more. Jason was a screenwriter on the 2019 thriller Dead Water, starring Casper Van Dean and Judd Nelson as well as the 2018 film Running for my Roots. He has also had two films and post-production, but perhaps Jason's most creative innovation was to turn the true crime world into a place of laughter, kindness and joy through the Santa Maybe, a Criminal podcast.Jason says that his podcast was born out of a love for true crime storytelling and satire. But if I had to venture a guess, it really came out of a love for people. Jason also works at a television station in Savannah, Georgia during his days. He helps lead a creative team focused on marketing the station. During his nights and weekends he continues to write screenplays and produce his podcast. He also edits popular podcasts like the Prosecutors Podcast. For someone in the true crime community, what stands out about Jason and his writing are his empathy. Today we're going to talk about writing. An art that has the power to heal others, to bring catharsis, to help us see things from a different perspective and open up new horizons.Learn more by visiting our website and follow along with us on Instagram. To check out Jason's podcast, click True Crime Satire Podcast | Santa Maybe, a Criminal Podcast

Christopher Seeds is Assistant Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California, Irvine. Chris is the Author of Death By Prison, a book about Life without Parole In recent decades, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole (LWOP) has developed into a distinctive penal form in the United States, one firmly entrenched in US policy-making, judicial and prosecutorial decision-making, correctional practice, and public discourse. LWOP is now a routine practice, but how it came to be so remains in question. Fifty years ago, imprisonment of a person until death was an extraordinary punishment; today, it accounts for the sentences of an increasing number of prisoners in the United States. What explains the shifts in penal practice and social imagination by which we have become accustomed to imprisoning people until death without any reevaluation or expectation of release? Combining a wide historical lens with detailed state- and institutional-level research, Death by Prison offers a provocative new foundation for questioning this deeply problematic practice that has escaped close scrutiny for too long. This episode might be best enjoyed on a front porch with some sweet tea. I don't live in the south, but my guest's stories made me feel I was there; creaky doors closing to keep the mosquitos out, and humid air thick with mystery and secrets. I was transported as today's guest told me stories of her life and career.I met Sheryl McCollum at CrimeCon and knew she must come on the show and share about her work. She is currently a crime scene analyst, but got her start volunteering at a rape crisis center at Grady Hospital. But her love of mysteries and solving cold cases goes way back to childhood when her mama introduced her to criminal couple, Bonnie and Clyde.Sheryl is an Emmy Award winning CSI from CBS46's CSI Atlanta, Director of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute (CCIRI), a writer for CrimeOnLine, Forensic and Crime Scene Expert for Crime Stories with Nancy Grace, and a CSI for a metro Atlanta Police Department.Did you enjoy this episode of DIE-ALOGUE? David Robinson began the search for his son, Daniel, 11 months ago. Parlaying his military experience into the search, David runs the operation like an Army mission. After all, what greater mission is there than to find your missing child?David shares an overview of his son's case, the ways law enforcement has failed him, how he has garnered media interest, and the shocking discovery of human remains that David and his volunteers uncovered while searching for Daniel.CASE BACKGROUND:Daniel Robinson was last seen the morning of June 23, 2021 leaving his worksite in Buckeye, AZ. He was driving his 2017 blue-grey Jeep Renegade and is believed to have headed west, deeper into desert terrain. On Tuesday, July 19, 2021, Daniel's vehicle was found by a rancher a little over two and a half miles from the worksite in a remote part of the desert. On that day, the Rancher reported the vehicle to Buckeye Police Department who later did a search by ground and drone. The vehicle was recovered; Daniel was not found. Please listen to this episode, then share it with your networks, then check out all the resources below. This story needs ears and action. I am just about recovered from Covid, but need another week to get the new series in tact. To that end, please enjoy a REPLAY with my friend and one of the OG true crime podcasters, Justin Evans. Justin even does the show's intro so enjoy his smooth voice until I am back with an all new episode next week. Thank you, Justin for lending your voice and for the fun walk down memory lane in this February 2020 interview!Original show notes Feb 2020:Before there was SERIAL, there was Generation Why. Justin Evans is one half of Generation WHY - the actual OG of true crime podcasts. He's also the one of the kindest guys in podcasting if you ask me. What a thrill to speak with him, hear about the early days of true crime podcasting, how he keeps it fresh with Aaron after 8 years, and where he finds himself now. He's also the host of The Peripheral podcast which I am particularly loving as it brings these PERIPHERAL topics around true crime, straight to the top...it's very raw and vulnerable. I like it. Justin and I recorded in NYC and my only regret is that we didn't have more time. Thank you, Justin, killing the small talk, and I hope to continue the DIE-ALOGUE! __________________________________________________________________________________________________Did you enjoy this episode of DIE-ALOGUE? Julie Williams and Lollie Winans were murdered in the Shenandoah Mountains. Why hasn't their case been solved? And should we really stay out of the forest?Today's episode — the second in our “New True Crime Books” series, features an enthralling read: Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. My guest is author Kathryn Miles, an outdoor enthusiast who shares a connection to the story and compelling theory on who killed these amazing young women.During the course of our conversation, Kathyrn leads us through the wilds of the back country — from the use of nature as a tool in trauma recovery, to the patriarchal aspects of wilderness culture. In addition to her quest for justice, Kathryn also fights for equity on the trails and is a fierce champion for people of all races, colors, and sizes, to enjoy all that the woods have to offer. Do you think it's easier or harder to be a spy today, compared to the Cold War and otherpoints in history? Robert Hanssen managed to operate as a double agent while employed by the FBI, who sold our secrets to Russia, for two decades between 1979-2001. We are moving into a new series - one listeners always love: new titles in the true crime historical crime categories. These books are just hitting the market and these conversations will give you unique access to the author's journey to writing the story and their POV on the crimes at hand.Today's featured author is Lis Wiehl. There's a chance you have already read one of her books, after all, she's written twenty! In addition to being a NY Times bestselling author, Lis is also a third generation federal prosecutor, and regular commentator and legal analyst on news outlets like Fox, CNN, NBC, and radio shows like NPR's All Things Considered. So back to the original question: is it easier to be a spy today? Yes and no. Listen in for the surprising answer, and why it's so important to Lis to tell historical stories that have current implications. If you think Hanssen's story stands alone in history unrelated to what is happening in Russia and the Ukraine today, think again. Lis's new book, A Spy in Plain Sight, launches in May but is available for pre-order now! It is a captivating page turner and does not read like a history textbook, though you will no doubt learn a lot. Do we consider the media an institution that can have an impact on justice? If you are today's guest, the answer is yes, and she would know as a journalist and reporter at WAMU, a DC outlet of NPR.This episode is part 4 of the series, MISSING, MURDERED + THE MEDIA. Jonquilyn Hill is also the creator and host of "Through the Cracks," investigates gaps in our society and the people who fall through them. Season 1 centers around the story of Relisha Rudd, an eight year old girl who went missing from a homeless shelter in Washington DC in 2014.In addition to exploring the complex factors at play in Relisha's story, Jonquilyn and Rebekah examine the racialized aspects of the true crime genre and just who the media finds "relatable?"You can read listen to Through the Cracks here: https://wamu.org/show/through-the-cracks/Your can follow Jonquilyn Hill on twitter: @jonquilynhillThe podcast promo you heard today is for the show, SAY THEIR NAME, by DCP Entertainment: "Say Their Name" focuses on the assault and killing of unarmed Black people by police and in ‘Stand Your Ground' states, highlighting incidents throughout the United States.Serving as a memorialization for these individuals, we learn about who these people were through the words of the people that knew them best, while also helping us understand what these situations do to their families and communities not only in the immediate aftermath, but also what happens when the news-cycle moves on and the social media attention shifts focus. What if “the media” isn't the problem? What if it's us? Today's guest believes the imbalance of media coverage for black women begins with our own broken values. This episode is part 3 of the series, MISSING, MURDERED + THE MEDIA. I couldn't cover this subject without a journalist's perspective. Today, I'm speaking with Tamar Sarai Davis, features reporter at PRISM, a non-profit media company. Tamar wrote about Lauren Smith Fields' case and focused specifically on the ways Black TikTok and Twitter elevated Lauren's story to the public's consciousness. You can read her article here. https://prismreports.org/2022/02/11/justice-for-lauren-smith-fields-and-the-black-tiktokers-who-made-sure-we-knew-her-name/Your can follow Tamar on twitter and below are the articles she references in theinterview.https://www.motherjones.com/media/2020/06/true-crime-podcasts-white-women/https://prismreports.org/2021/10/01/alive-but-still-not-free/https://prismreports.org/2020/07/07/scripted-cop-dramas-paint-a-dangerously-false-picture/Join me next week as continue this conversation with journalist Jonquilyn Hill, host of the podcast, Through the Cracks. The podcast promo you heard today is SINISTERHOOD. New Series: MISSING, MURDERED + THE MEDIA.As we explore which came first; the media's projection of who we value as a victim, or our own societal values that media reflects back to us, we continue the conversation around the disparity of coverage for women and girls of color.Today's guest has extensive first hand knowledge of this reality. Dr. Danielle Slakoff's dissertation was the media's portrayal of women and girls as victims of crime, with a particular focus on how race and ethnicity may impact these portrayals. Dr. Slakoff is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Sacramento State, and is frequently called upon by the media to speak about missing white woman syndrome and related topics. This week, Bob is joined by Jason Usry, producer, writer, and “Head Elf” of the true crime satire podcast “Santa Maybe, a Criminal.” Joined by fellow true crime podcasters, including Dr. Shiloh and Dr. Scott, Jason tells a fictional true crime story involving none other than Santa Claus himself. Bob and Jason discuss meeting at CrimeCon over egg nogs, Jason's newest investigation into the Tooth Fairy, and the possible wrongful conviction of the Big Bad Wolf. Bob then makes an executive decision to keep things merry, and forgoes a discussion of The Santa Claus Murders, a brutal real-life true crime story that took place in Santa Claus, GA in 1997. New Series: MISSING, MURDERED + THE MEDIA.Kicking it off with my first guest, Amara Cofer — host of the podcast, Black Girl Gone. Amara brings a whole new perspective to the conversation, one that actually inspired me to change the title of the series. She speaks a lot about the importance of social media as a tactic in helping to raise awareness for cases that are historically left out of the mainstream media's coverage. With 95k TikTok followers, Amara knows a thing or two about leveraging the power of social media to help a case. She does it all the time on her podcast and TikTok channel.Amara set this series up perfectly and I will be exploring more facets of this complicated subject over the next few weeks.Below is a link to the TikTok played in today's episode.
