My guest this week is the one and only Jay Gonzalez. Jay is a longtime "townie" here in Athens, GA, and is grateful to call Athen's home. His gratitude extends to what he calls "the luckiest job he's ever had" — being the keyboardist for the band Drive-By Truckers. That lucky job takes him on the road all over the U.S. and across the pond to many European countries. When he's not on the road, Jay has a unique knack for performing cover songs that will surprise and excite you. You may find yourself dancing and singing the night away. He's put together a new band that takes these covers to a whole new level. No matter where you see Jay, he'll bring back memories for some and a music history lesson for others.Jay talked about his love of Athens, his family, and his experience as a member of Drive-By Truckers. We had a great time, and he even played and sang live in the studio. Welcome to Episode 4 of Roots Music Rambler! Join us – hosts Francesca Folinazzo, who Jason calls “Frank,” and Jason Falls, who goes by “Falls” most of the time, as we explore the real roots of the music we love. On this episode, Francesca catches up with Jay Gonzalez of the Drive by Truckers. The multi-instrumentalist has a new side project coming out in December. He shares the story of finding and collaborating with lyricist Peter Smith to produce the new Gonzalez Smith album. The first single from the album, She's My Girl, is out now.  Frank also explores Jay's roots as a musician growing up in upstate New York, moving to the South and blending with the Drive by Truckers.  Frank & Falls also do a little check-in to see how the show is going so far, four episodes in. Francesca reveals she spent 20 years as a 9-1-1 dispatch operator. Jason muses on his next tattoo and hints that he's working on an impersonation off Drive by Trucker co-founder Patterson Hood.  Since we're all new to Roots Music Rambler, the show includes three main parts: Francesca and Falls open the show talking about a topic of the day in the music industry. Our guest then comes in as we explore their roots – of music and life. Then Francesca and Falls finish off the show with our Pickin' The Grinnin' segment. That's where both pick what music, artists, events and more make them grin this week. They share whom they'll see live, what new artists they've discovered and more. We Wanted to Shine⦁ The Blips, Throw Me Around⦁ The Blips, Walking Home⦁ Jon Flyn, Back To You⦁ Crowded House, Whatever You Want⦁ Jay Gonzalez, You Make It Hard (To Be Unhappy)⦁ The Krayolas, Cry Cry, Laugh Laugh⦁ The Krayolas, You Really Got Me⦁ Frankie Siragusa, Like Dreamers Do (with Keith Slettedahl)⦁ Frankie Siragusa, I'm in Love⦁ Squeeze, Annie Get Your Gun (Live at the Fillmore)⦁ Squeeze, Tempted (Live at the Fillmore)⦁ The Hungry Williams, Go On Fool⦁ The Kaw-Ligas, Hopped On Your Love⦁ The Kaw-Ligas, T For Texas

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Gonzalez filled in one big missing piece of his campaign platform last week, a plan for how to pay for the new investments in transportation and education he has vowed to pursue if elected. His proposal to levy a 1.6 percent annual tax on the holdings of Massachusetts colleges and universities with endowments greater than $1 billion became the topic of the week in the race — and it's the first of two issues Jennifer Nassour and Jesse Mermell tackle in their latest Codcast installment. The Republican and Democratic voices live up to the show's tagline, “disagreeing agreeably,” staking out opposing views on the matter. In the second half, they set their sights on the November ballot question that would repeal the state's transgender rights law signed two years ago by Gov. Charlie Baker. On this issue, Nassour and Mermell are in agreement, with both supporting the “yes” side that would retain the law. Jeanne Talbot, the mother of a transgender high school student, Nicole Talbot, is their guest, along with Matt Wilder, a spokesman for the Yes on 3 campaign.

It's been a rough few days for Jay Gonzalez. A new Suffolk University poll shows him trailing Governor Charlie Baker by 27 percent in the governor's race, and his plan to tax the endowments of deep-pocketed colleges and universities hasn't gone over too well. But all is not necessarily lost! In this episode of the Scrum, the Boston Globe's Joan Vennochi joins Peter Kadzis and Adam Reilly to discuss three things Gonzalez *might* be able to use to his advantage between now and November: the terrifying gas blasts in the Merrimack Valley; Baker's endorsement of State Rep Geoff Diehl in the US Senate race; and the enthusiastic support of Senator Elizabeth Warren, Diehl's opponent.

The full broadcast of Boston Public Radio from Thursday, September 20th, 2018 "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd brought us the latest updates on the embattled Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused of sexual assault by California professor Christine Blasey Ford. We opened up the lines and asked you about the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee imposing a Friday morning deadline on Professor Ford to decide if she will testify on Monday. If you’re a Republican, do you support this tactic? If Kavanaugh isn’t fully investigated, will questions about his legitimacy be a dark cloud over his tenure? Former secretary of public safety Andrea Cabral joined us for her recurring criminal justice segment, "Law and Order." The smash-hit musical "Hamilton" hits Boston this fall. Does it live up to the hype? WGBH arts editor and "Open Studio" host Jared Bowen gave us the details. Harvard Graduate School of Education Professor Paul Reville weighed in on gubernatorial candidate Jay Gonzalez's plan to pay for his education and transportation initiatives with a tax on universities. The big egos and big money that make up professional football are central to journalist Mark Leibovich’s latest book, "Big Game: The NFL In Dangerous Times." Jonathon Alsop of the Boston Wine School shared some of his favorite reds for the beginning of fall.

There were two big developments at the 2018 Massachusetts Democratic Party convention: challenger Josh Zakim getting an endorsement in the secretary of state's race over six-term incumbent Bill Galvin, and Jay Gonzalez winning the endorsement for governor in resounding fashion over Bob Massie. But the convention also highlighted the awkward fact that, with the general election just five months away, Democrats aren't sure whether to attack Republican Governor Charlie Baker or ignore him.  WGBH News's Adam Reilly, Peter Kadzis, and Mike Deehan size up what happened in Worcester with Zakim, Mass Dems chair Gus Bickford, and Quentin Palfrey, who won the convention's endorsement for lieutenant governor — and get some instant analysis and insight from Gintautas Dumcius of Mass Live and the Springfield Republican and Lauren Dezenski of Politico.

Warren, Brownsberger go at it on criminal justice bill

The sweeping criminal justice bill that Gov. Charlie Baker signed earlier this month received widespread, but not universal, praise as a welcome turn away from the tough-on-crime policies of the 1980s and ‘90s. One notable dissenting voice was that of Setti Warren, the former Newton mayor who is now one of three Democrats vying to challenge Baker in the November election. Warren said there was lots that he liked in the bill, which pulled back sanctions in all sorts of areas, including eliminating or ratcheting back several mandatory minimum drugs sentences. But he denounced the inclusion in the bill of new mandatory minimum sentences related to the synthetic opioids Fentanyl and Carfentanil and said he would have vetoed the legislation because of them. Sen. Will Brownsberger, the lead Senate author of the bill, called Warren's position “uninformed,” and said it prompted him to endorse Jay Gonzalez, one of Warren's rivals in the Democratic primary for governor. Warren and Brownsberger sat down together to discuss their differences in this week's Codcast. The crux of the debate came down to finding the right balance between sticking with one's principles and the need for compromise to move things forward.

Could the Massachusetts Gaming Commission really pull the plug on the $2.4 billion Wynn Resorts hotel and casino going up in Everett? Chip Tuttle and Jay Gonzalez are at the forefront of those pressing for the commission to do just that. They say the resignation of Steve Wynn as chairman and chief executive of Wynn Resorts is not enough – that top company officials were either aware or should have been aware of the sexual misconduct alleged by the Wall Street Journal. As a result, they say, the company's casino license in Massachusetts should be revoked.
