Episode 197: Stop Wasting Your Time: Why You Need to Do WAY Less in the Gym

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2025 17:34

I'm calling BS on the fitness industry's "more is better" mentality. I see it constantly - people go from working out 3 times a week to 4, then 5, then 6, then they're doing two-a-days and wondering why they're injured and progress has plateaued. I'm here to tell you: you need to do less, maybe a LOT less.I break down the biggest time-wasters I see: those ridiculous 45-minute warmups (you need 5-10 minutes, max), trying to run multiple intense programs simultaneously (spoiler: it doesn't work), and recovery protocols that are more about selling you stuff than actually helping you recover. Ice baths? They might actually hurt your gains.Too many supplements, unsustainable meal prep routines, and bloated 'needs' are getting in the way of your GOALS. The question isn't "what should I add?" - it's "what can I cut out?" Your routine should fit your life, not consume it.

Hey team! Justin here. I'm incredibly excited to share this episode with you because it dives into something I'm deeply passionate about—the biopsychosocial model that forms the foundation of everything we do at Feel Strong Fitness. In this episode, I break down why I believe treating you as a whole person—not just a collection of muscles and movements— is absolutely crucial for real, lasting results. I'll walk you through why your biology, psychology, and social environment all play essential roles in your fitness journey.I explain what the biopsychosocial model is and why I've built my entire coaching philosophy around itI share examples of how seemingly simple health issues often have complex underlying causesI reveal why I believe standard, one-size-fits-all fitness approaches consistently let people downI take you behind the scenes of how we apply this model at Feel Strong FitnessMy experience shows that addressing only one dimension while ignoring psychological and social contexts leaves gapsI'm convinced that the biopsychosocial model offers a more compassionate, effective approach to fitnessI truly believe this perspective will change how you think about your own fitness journey. Give it a listen, and let me know your thoughts!

In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Erin Taylor, founder of Athletes for Yoga and author of the new book "Move, Rest, Recover: A Workbook, Your Practical Guide to Balancing Mind and Body." Erin and I discussed the importance of integrating intentional recovery practices into our busy lives. We emphasized that if a recovery practice doesn't fit into your real life, it simply won't work. She shared practical insights about viewing rest as productive rather than selfish, approaching recovery with the same vigor as training, and using transition moments throughout the day as opportunities for rest. Erin's favorite recovery technique—"legs up the wall"—requires no equipment and only a few minutes to deliver powerful benefits for physical and mental restoration. Our conversation highlighted how small, consistent recovery practices can lead to sustainable habits that serve us and everyone around us. You can find Erin's book wherever books are sold, visit her website at erintaylor.works, and subscribe to her newsletter for weekly tools, insights, prompts, and videos to support your evolving recovery practice. @erintaylorworks

Episode 176: The Misconception of Self-Care

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2024 24:48

Justin discusses the importance of embracing challenges and deliberate stress as essential components of self-care and wellness. He also argues against the common notion that rest and recovery are the ultimate goals, emphasizing that true growth and adaptation often come from facing discomfort and pushing one's limits. Justin highlights the need for balance, especially during stressful times, and encourages listeners to seek challenges that foster personal growth and resilience. Takeaways: Sometimes things need to be really hard for growth. Rest and recovery are not synonymous with self-care. Deliberate stress can be beneficial for self-care. Resting more is not always the answer to discomfort. Finding balance is crucial during stressful times. Something is better than nothing when it comes to exercise. If things are easy all the time, we will not get better. Valuing yourself is central to effective self-care. Embrace challenges to foster personal growth. Lethargy and complacency do not help anyone. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/feel-strong/support

While individualized solutions are recognized as necessary for people with significant problems or goals, they are difficult to implement and scale. Implementing individualized solutions requires highly skilled coaches who can address technical aspects and soft skills. Scaling individualized solutions is challenging due to the time and effort required. As a result, many people turn to systematized approaches that can be more easily implemented and scaled.
