Read on for today's agenda below prepared by David (thank you very much). - Retired US Diplomat to 5 different nations  David Hunter shares his knowledge, passion, interest, and experience. 1) Why Is President Biden Visiting Lockheed Martin's Javelin Missile Plant in Alabama?:   This Tuesday, Pres. Biden visited Alabama in his symbolic support for Lockheed's Alabama production of various missiles.  This Javelin supply is key to Ukraine defending against Russian tanks.  But is there something more important going on?  What about hypersonic missile production? 2)  Scramble for New European Gas Supplies: Last week Russia announced it is cutting of gas sales to Poland and Bulgaria.  And Putin will likely suspend natural gas to Moldova, who is seeking membership in the EU.  How can US and Europe make up for this gas shortage in Europe.  Will Russia go bankrupt?  If so, what will Putin do? 3) Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov Goes off the Deep End Again:  Lavrov recently said on Italian TV that Jewish President of Ukraine Zalensky is pro-Nazi. And that Hitler had Jewish bloodlines.  Israel is outraged by this remark and is demanding an apology.  They say his comments are 'unforgivable and outrageous'.  What do you think? 4)  Should Russia's Far East Region be Returned to China?  In 1922, at end of the  Russian civil war, the Bolsheviks claimed the semi-sovereign 'Far East Republic' as their USSR territory.  Previously, it had been annexed to the Russian Empire via the 'unequal treaties' with Imperial China in 1860.  This has long been a source of anger by Chinese since that 1860 event, and some say it should be returned to China, much like semi-autonomous Taiwan.  But it is a much bigger area, representing 1/4th of all Russian Federation lands. If Russia is weakened by sanctions, will China take it back? Mattress Market - Brand Names at Discoun Each new mattress sale includes delivery, setup & takeaway of your old mattress.

I HATE DONALD TRUMP!We the people heard that over and again in 2016, did we not? I may disagree with them, sometimes passionately so, but I never hated any politician, did you? To be sure, President Trump has a most unique personality. He is straightforward to a fault, confrontational, argumentative, interruptive, always on the ready for a verbal fight. He sometimes has that turn–off look on his face. He drinks no alcohol but he sure loves his food. You can predict the way he will dress, especially those long red ties, and his hair can often look like something not his own!He won the Republican nomination for President in 2016 even though he was by no means any kind of traditional Republican. He was then, is now and always will be:         HIS OWN MAN.Perhaps more a libertarian than a Republican. It is difficult at times to figure out what he is but you can judge the man by what he does. TRUMP IS A MAN OF HIS WORD! He does what he says he will do. Especially when it comes to Israel. The organization THE REPUBLICAN JEWISH COALITION (RJC) calls Trump “the most pro–Israel American President ever.” If the RJC comes to that conclusion as a result of what Trump has promised and what Trump has done, President Trump is indeed the most pro–Israel, pro–Jewish President ever.Mr. Trump has an unwavering commitment to defend the state of Israel. He understands that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, a strong ally of America, a buffer to radical and warlike Islamic states like Iran, and even a thorn in the side to Russia. Trump knows that it is for the good of America that Israel needs to survive and thrive. So, from the Trump Administration there comes a long litany of pro–Israel policies. In December 2017, President Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of the Jewish state. It was the capital when modern day Israel, then the land of Canaan, was occupied by the Jews and the twelve tribes. It was the capital city of David, Solomon and any number of kings thereafter. Jerusalem is steeped in Jewish history, tradition, occupancy, culture and lifestyle. It is in fact the ETERNAL CAPITAL OF THE JEWISH STATE AND RIGHT–THINKING PEOPLE. Such a declaration would never have been made by the Democrats and certainly not by Barack Hussein Obama. In May 2018, President Trump moved the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. At that time, Trump publicly declared in presidential fashion that Jerusalem was:         THE ETERNAL CAPITAL OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE.As such, the American embassy should be there, and not in Tel Aviv. Another bold move but the right move. Trump was loudly criticized by Democrats but for this President, the hateful harangues of critics and especially the Democrats are water off a duck's back. That is one great strength of Trump. He ignores hateful criticism and may even welcome that. Again, in May 2018, President Trump withdrew the United States of America from the IRAN NUCLEAR TREATY. In many ways, Trump knew that this treaty was trumped up, unenforceable, a sham and one which would eventually allow the participating nations and the world to see Iran with nuclear warfare capability. It was a treaty Iran could ignore, and it did, and even while professing adherence, all the while pursue the development of nuclear capability. Trump withdrew America from that sham of a treaty much to the consternation of America's European allies. Trumps response to that criticism was that those nations like America should also withdraw from this sham of a treaty. In November 2018, President Trump reinstituted crippling sanctions against Israel's main geopolitical enemy Iran. Most were economic and the full effects of this bold and audacious action rippled through the Iranian economy and culture. Not only did such presidential actions and sanctions have their intended geopolitical effects, but as well the sanctions caused unrest, dissent and even a certain kind of protest and rebellion on the part of right–thinking Iranian citizens. Trump knew the effect on the entire world which Iranian nuclear capability would have. He with Israel was determined to not allow that to happen. In March 2019, the United States recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. This is a territory once Syrian but captured in war by the Israelis and kept by them ever since. Syrians and their allies would camp on the Heights and fire indiscriminately on the Israelis and their territory below, an incredible military advantage. Israelis knew they had to maintain possession of the Golan Heights for their safety and security. They were of course loudly criticized by Palestinians and by Arab nations. To this day, Israelis maintain full possession of that unique and special territory. I have been there three times. It is well fortified. The Israelis keep watch 24/7 for any Syrian military activity even as they do for Lebanon with the militant, hateful Iranian–sponsored group military activity of Hamas and Hezbollah. Israeli soldiers, the IDF charged with the defense of that territory know how serious that task is and the guard is never down. These trained soldiers are tough, kill or be killed defenders of their precious PROMISED LAND. In November 2019, in a major reversal of prior US policy, the Trump Administration declared that Israelis settlement activity on so called Palestinian land is not necessarily illegal. In fact, all that land was historically Israeli and Jewish. I often wonder how real, true Jewish citizens could ever cede one inch of that precious historical and biblical territory which was always theirs. Current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes the same, and has pursued a reasonably aggressive settlement policy to his credit. We can be certain that more such settlements will occur or at least the attempt made to do so. If Trump is President, such moves will be sanctioned and supported. If Biden is elected, you can be certain there will be no such support and in fact, Israel will be sanctioned even punished if they do so. In January, Trump released his plan for peace in that war–like territory termed:         PEACE TO PROSPERITY.Such a plan gave the Palestinians the power to govern themselves which they have always sought but NOT the power to threaten Israel. This proposal, no matter how fair and realistic, was promptly rejected by Palestinian leaders as every such plan has been. It is time wasting, futile and DEAD ON ARRIVAL (DOA) to propose any plan of compromise to the Palestinians, other than one which would call for the elimination and removal of all Jews from that territory which the Palestinians regard as their own. As one Palestinian leader declared:PALESTINIANS WILL NEVER REST UNTIL EVERY JEW IN ISRAEL IS BURIED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA! And that, so it seems is the real attitude and thinking of the Palestinians which prevents any compromise or even negotiations for peace. Israelis know that and PRESIDENT TRUMP KNOWS THAT!President Trump has also pledged that the bond between the United States and Israel is “absolutely, totally unbreakable.” It should be. The United Nations, after World War II and the horrific Holocaust, reestablished Israel as the homeland for the Jewish people. Arab nations immediately went to war, any number of them only to lose every one of them. In the process, Israel was able to recapture much of the territory to which it was entitled and especially, their beloved capital city Jerusalem. There is no way any of that territory will be returned or given up. Right thinking Israelis resent to this day the unworkable compromise which occurred as the result of the disastrous plan:         LAND FOR PEACE.All that accomplished was the surrender of Jewish land, Israeli territory and Israel got nothing, absolutely nothing in return.Donald J. Trump is not a true Republican and he would probably admit that. He chafes at the spineless, compromising, often wishy–washy conduct of Republicans in Congress. Nor is he a Christian. But Trump, unlike Obama before him, or our current group of politicians:         DOES WHAT HE SAYS HE WILL DO.And that starts with the full defense and support of Israel and the Jews. It is as though Trump believes in the promises of the great GOD JEHOVAH in Genesis 12 which states the promise of the G–d of the Jews:I WILL BLESS THEM THAT BLESS YOU AND I WILL CURSE THEM THAT CURSE YOU. It is good that America, WE THE PEOPLE, are on the side of blessing rather than cursing. No right–thinking person, including the not – right–thinking politicians should ever want to incur the wrath of this powerful and almighty G–d of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and our Lord Jesus Christ. So, I for one am with you President Donald John Trump and I say exactly what you have said and promised:THE BOND BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND ISRAEL IS ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY UNBREAKABLE.The majority of American Jews vote Democrat and will not vote for Mr. Trump this year. In so doing, they show what they really think and feel about the Promised Land, the eternal home of all Jews. Such a vote seems to indicate that they really don't care what happens to Israel. What a shame. There are far more Evangelicals and gentiles who are much more pro–Israel than these seemingly non–caring Jews. And they, we will vote for Trump for there really is no alternative for those of us who believe in and love the land of Israel, the Promised Land. I will enthusiastically vote for Mr. Trump. It matters not his personal personality, but what matters are his policies, his political platforms and his promises. He has shown us that he will KEEP THEM. And that is more than good enough for me. I hope it is the same for you.

On February 29, 2020 Leap Year Day, three days before Super Tuesday, we joined thousands of citizens on Boston Commons for a Rally for Bernie Sanders for President. We interviewed a range of citizens to understand their profiles, motivations, demographics, and personalities. Our intent was to go way beyond the mass media's generic, boring, stereotyping, and lumping together of who Bernie supporters are. Let's face it, the mass media often mis-characterizes events to fit their pre-existing narrative. The dominant narrative about Bernie supporters, has been that "Bernie Bros" are disruptive, uncivilized, and playing a negative role in the Democratic Party. Finding Bernie supporters who defy the stereotypes was as easy as A-B-C even on a cold windy day in Boston. Take this young man, "Q" in the above photo , who is a "traveling nurse", and a very active Bernie supporter, whose demographic is beyond unique: an American Muslim, born in South Africa of Ugandan parents, family moved to Newton, Mass at age six, had lots of Jewish friends, and is proud to be a supporter of Bernie as potentially the first Jewish President.I call that a Demographic of One!BARNEY FRANK next episode full length interview focused on Capitalism has Changed!Support the show (https://www.gofundme.com/f/podcast-chutzpah-and-soul-in-memory-of-lenny-bruce?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link-tip&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet)

48: So What’s the Big Deal with the Primaries, Anyway?

Dear White Women

We’re less than one week away from Super Tuesday!  In today’s episode, Sara and Misasha talk about why the primaries are so important and why your vote matters, especially this election year! They will also cover what the deal is with Super Tuesday, what happened in Iowa and why that matters, and take a look at what the primaries really mean for our Presidential election. Listen and learn during this informative Q&A session laced with Sara and Misasha’s punchy commentary! Show Highlights: Q: When does primary season begin and how long is it? A: Voting began February 3rd with the Iowa caucuses. The last states vote in early June. Primary season lasts approximately 4 months.   Q: Who will I be voting for in the primaries? A: The primaries are the main event. Candidates for the Democratic and Republican 2020 Presidential nominations, but voters will find all manner of down-ballot elections to consider on primary day. Down ballot means everything that is not the Presidential nomination, including house and senate races, and seats on the state legislature.   Q: What’s the difference between primaries and caucuses? A: Primaries are relatively straight-forward. Voters vote and their vote goes to candidates who hope they get more votes than the other candidates. Caucuses, like Iowa, are similar. Generally, supporters for various candidates sit or stand together in groups. A headcount is conducted, and if a candidate doesn’t reach a certain threshold of support, the group is deemed non-viable and its members re-align with other clusters before a final count is made.    Q: Can states actually cancel their primaries? A: Yes, they can and some states did this year. Alaska, Nevada, Kansas, Virginia, Arizona, South Carolina, and Hawaii canceled the Republican primaries only.   Q: Is there a Republican Presidential primary and opponents running against President Trump? A: Yes. In most states, President Trump’s opponents include Joe Walsh, a former Illinois congressman and William F. Weld, a former Massachusetts Governor.   Q: Can you vote in both the Democratic and Republican primary? A: It’s just one vote, per person. In some states with “Closed primaries”, you’ll need to be registered with a given party to participate.   Q: Can Trump be re-elected President even after getting impeached by the House? A: That is his plan. President Trump is the first impeached President ever to seek re-election.   Q: Why do we keep hearing that Iowa is so important? A: Iowa goes first and has since the 1970s. There’s really no great reason why Iowa goes first, although some of the Vietnam war protests and racial tensions of the 1968 Democratic convention helped set the stage.    Q: What is Super Tuesday? A: Super Tuesday is March 3rd, and is the single most important day on the primary calendar because of how many major states will be holding their elections, including two very large states, California and Texas. About 40% of all pledged Democratic delegates will be awarded in these states. Misasha goes into greater detail here about how the delegate fight gets more serious!   Q: When did Super Tuesday become a thing? A: Voting on that day of the week is an old tradition in the United States, but it wasn’t until the 1976 election that was credited with leading to the first recorded usage of that particular phrase. Sara shares the backstory of the when and the why!   Q: How does someone win the Democratic nomination? A:  A candidate hoping to win on the first ballot at the convention must secure a majority of pledged delegates, as dictated by the outcomes in state primaries and caucuses. In total, there are just under 4,000 pledged delegates up for grabs, as well as hundreds of super delegates, though the party prefers to call them “automatic” delegates. The official nomination will take place at the party’s convention in Milwaukee this summer.   Q: What are delegates? A: There are two different types. Delegates, “the people”, are like political figures: activists and local leaders chosen to represent their states at the party’s convention. Delegates, “the numbers”, are the all-purpose metric of primary success. They are allocated proportionately according to the state voting results and their population.   Q: What are super delegates? Didn’t they get rid of those? A: Democratic super delegates are political insiders. They can be sitting lawmakers to former senior party officials whose primary choices can be divorced entirely from the preference of the average voter. Super delegates can vote as they choose and their very existence in 2016 became a source of major tension in the race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. While Mrs. Clinton bested Mr. Sanders among pledged delegates in 2016, Mr. Sanders and his supporters saw the super delegates system as an affront to the democratic process. In response, the Democratic National Committee has sharply reduced the influence of super delegates, effectively preventing them from participating in a substantial way in the first ballot of a Presidential nominee process.     Q: Are there any history makers in the Presidential election? A: Mrs. Warren, Mrs. Klobuchar, or Representative Tulsi Gabbard from Hawaii would be the first woman elected President. Mr. Buttigieg would be the first openly-gay President to hold the office, and Mr. Sanders or Mr. Bloomberg would be the first Jewish President elected. A few of them would also be the oldest President ever inaugurated for a first term.   Q: Which party has done better at fund-raising so far? A: Trump entered 2020 with more than 100 million dollars in cash on hand, and he outpaced every Democrat with 46 million in the 4th quarter of 2019. But, contenders for the Democratic nomination have accusatively surpassed Trump’s totals, suggesting pretty good enthusiasm.   Q: Does my vote in the primaries matter? A: YES!! Although the piecemeal nature of the state-by-state calendar might make the process seem less exciting, the primaries really do resolve the nontrivial matter of choosing major party nominees and also all of the down-ballot stuff.   Q: Is it ok for me to skip voting in the primaries and just vote in the general election? A: It’s allowed, of course. But the down-ballot primaries will be of significant consequence locally in many states and those are the feeder systems for our future. So it’s incredibly important to vote, especially all the way down the ballot and not just in the main event.   Q: Do I need to be registered to vote in the primaries? A: Yes! 49 states require voter registration. North Dakota is the only state that does not require it. Deadlines for registering in your state can be found at the U.S. Vote Foundation.   Q: Do I need a government-issued ID? A: These requirements can vary by state and can be found at NCSL.   Q: What if I was removed in a voter purge? A: You can check your status at Vote.org.   Listen to the podcast for more Q&A regarding voting over the internet, those interfering Russians, Trump’s chances of re-election, how trustworthy the polls are, if we are going to be ok, and when this will be all over. Beinart feels that liberal American Jews are feeling increasingly distanced from Israel as a result of Israel’s handling of its conflict with the Palestinians. In our interview, we talked about whether Barack Obama is America’s first “Jewish President,” how Debbie Wasserman Schultz let Democrats know when and whether they could applaud for Binyamin Netanyahu, and how Beinart’s critics have reacted to his arguments. Read all about it, and more, in Beinart’s controversial new book. Please become a fan of New Books in Public Policy on Facebook if you haven’t already. Learn more about your ad choices.
