In 1979, as Christmas approached, the United States Embassy in Tehran held more than fifty American hostages, who had been seized when revolutionaries stormed the embassy. No one from the U.S. had been able to have contact with them. The Reverend M. William Howard, Jr., was the president of the National Council of Churches at the time, and when he received a telegram from the Revolutionary Council, inviting him to perform Christmas services for the hostages, he jumped at the opportunity. In America, “we had a public that was quite riled up,” Reverend Howard reminds his son, The New Yorker Radio Hour's Adam Howard. “Who knows what might have resulted if this issue were not somehow addressed? . . . Might there be an American invasion, an attempt to rescue the hostages in a militaristic way?” Reverend Howard was aware that the gesture had some propaganda value to the Iranian militants, but he saw a chance to lower the tension. Accompanied by another Protestant minister and a Catholic bishop, Howard entered front-page headlines, travelling to Tehran and into the embassy. He gave the captives updates on the N.F.L. playoffs, and they prayed. It was a surreal experience to say the least. “It was in the Iranian hostage crisis that I understood how alone we are, and how powerless we are when other people take control,” Reverend Howard says. “And really it's in that setting that one can develop faith.”This segment originally aired on December 15, 2023.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Political correspondent Sam Sokol and reporter Diana Bletter join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Recently, attempts are being made to restart the controversial judicial overhaul legislation and last week, Sokol spoke with one of its architects, MK Simcha Rothman. We hear about Rothman’s perspective on why it is needed and in fact protects Israel's democracy. The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee will soon begin holding hearings on a proposed bill applying a Basic Law requiring a public referendum for land-for-peace deals to the West Bank and Israeli territorial waters, the Knesset’s right-wing Land of Israel Caucus announced on Wednesday. What is this bill and why do those who proposed it believe it will be passed at this time. Bletter went to the northern coastal city of Nahariya yesterday to witness how during the ceasefire, hospitals are moving from war footing and out of their bunkers. She brings tales from the maternity ward. Last week, Bletter visited Haifa to see how residents are -- once again -- celebrating the annual Holiday of Holidays that honors the mixed city's three major religions. About a month ago, the United States International Development Finance Corporation's (DFC) Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Nisha Biswal, attended a ceremony in Freetown to launch the “construction of an electricity infrastructure” in Freetown's Kissy Dockyard, 4km east of the city center.  US Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Bryan David Hunt and DFC executives described the launching ceremony as “a seminal development for Sierra Leone and an unprecedented one for the US government.” They stated that the proposed energy power plant is going to be the “largest increase in energy capacity in a single country of any prior DFC project.”  DFC is a US-government run “development finance institution,” established in 2019 as part of the Better Utilization of Investments Leading to Development Act (BUILD) 2018, which combined the Development Credit Authority Agency with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, both formerly part of the US State Department Agency for International Development (USAID). DFC reports directly to the US Congress.  Several months ahead of Freetown launching ceremony, DFC executives and US Embassy staff in Sierra Leone have been repeating that up to $412 million in loans and risk insurance have been approved by the US government to provide finance and risk insurance for the project. Two foreign companies, Milele Energy and TCQ Power Limited are listed as co-sponsors and joint recipients of the $412 million loan (including $120m in risk insurance) for the construction of the said electricity infrastructure project. TCQ Power's controversial presence and involvement in Sierra Leone's energy sector dates to the early 2010s, but Milele Energy is a newcomer, arriving in Sierra Leone after the election of Julius Maada Bio in 2018.  In public communication documents, the DFC and the US Embassy in Sierra Leone present Milele Energy as an independent Kenyan-based power generation company, failing to reveal complete details of the company's profile and real ownership; details that are required to enable public scrutiny of Milele Energy's track record and whether it has a proven capacity to deliver on its contractual responsibilities. Corporate records reviewed by Africanist Press shows that Milele Energy's corporate shareholders include Gemcorp Fund (GP) Limited, a company registered in George Town, Cayman Islands, holding the majority 80% shares in Milele Energy; Verkanda LLC registered in Delaware, US, also holding 10% shares in Milele Energy; JWI III LLC also registered in Delaware, US, holding 5% shares in Milele Energy; and Empower Africa Consulting Limited registered in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, holding 5% shares in Milele Energy. There is no record of any competitive bidding and public tender process that Milele Energy and DFC went through to take over the Western Area Power Generation Project. Worse, Sierra Leoneans are also unaware of the loan conditions, including the interest rates attached to DFC's development finance loans. DFC is yet to disclose the process used to issue the $412 million debt to the US owned company Milele Energy for the alleged purpose of building an electricity infrastructure in Sierra Leone.  In this episode, we examine Milele Energy's corporate ownership and the DFC's takeover of the Western Area Power Generation Project.  We ask whether the DFC's operations in Sierra Leone complies with the provisions of the US BUILD Act of 2018? We also highlighted the need for oversight agencies of the US government (Congress and Senate Foreign Affairs Committee) to institute an independent investigation to help determine how Milele Energy and DFC took over the Western Area Power Generation Project, and the role played by the United States Embassy in Freetown in these corporate developments in Sierra Leone. This episode is part of the VOICE FROM EXILE commentary series of the Africanist Press.

In this episode, we discuss the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC)'s acquisition of the Western Area Power Generation Project and the role of the US-financed company, Milele Energy in Sierra Leone's corrupt energy sector. We ask, in particular, how Milele Energy Limited, and the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC) took over the Western Area Power Generation Project and what are the legal and financial basis for the US$412 million debt financing they are imposing on Sierra Leone in the name of an electricity project whose viability remains highly questionable? In addition to the above, we also ask whether the DFC's takeover of the Western Area Power Generation Project in compliance with the provisions of the US Build Act of 2018? What do the registration details, corporate records, and shareholders arrangements of TCQ Power Limited, Milele Energy Limited, and Milele Topco Limited tell us about the company's profile and transnational operations in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas? What roles have the United States Embassy and British High Commission in Freetown played in these corporate developments in Sierra Leone in the last 15 years? Most importantly, what is the relationship between Milele Energy's corporate network and Julius Maada Bio and other Sierra Leone Peoples Party politicians? And did Sierra Leone's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) play a role in these dubious corporate arrangements, and what benefits did the ACC derive from the DFC and Milele's corporate operations in Sierra Leone? Sierra Leone's Rigged Elections: Where Does the British Stand?

In July and August 2023, the United States government announced visa restrictions on officials who undermined democracy in Sierra Leone and called for an investigation into the conduct of the elections and accompanying human rights violations. The move followed the disputed June 2023 general elections, which international and domestic elections observer groups described as "undemocratic and non-transparent." However, in October 2023, the United States Embassy in Sierra Leone issued several statements that endorsed a "Hotel Agreement" between the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and All Peoples Congress (APC), allowing politicians of the two parties to enter into a power-sharing arrangement without first investigating the conduct of the June 2023 elections. In this episode, we review the position of the British government, showing that process that led to the October 2023 "Hotel Agreement" started with the SLPP/APC meeting held at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.   In early May 2023, Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland first met with leaders of the SLPP and APC in London to discuss the "Sierra Leone elections and the values of the Commonwealth." And on 25 May 2023, the Commonwealth Secretariat midwife the signing of a pre-election "Peace Pledge" in Freetown that committed all candidates and political parties to respect democratic election rules. Nonetheless, Sierra Leone's public elections laws and the Commonwealth's pre-election "Peace Pledge" were both violated. In spite of these violations, in August 2023, the Commonwealth Secretariat offered to negotiate a political settlement to the electoral crisis without first investigating the disputed elections and its human rights violations. Consequently, this Commonwealth proposed negotiation, eventually held in October 2023 at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown, only included leaders of the SLPP and APC. Other political parties that signed the Commonwealth's Pre-Election Peace Pledge, and participated in the elections, were all excluded from the post-elections negotiation that led to the SLPP/APC Hotel Agreement, which foreign diplomats wrongly called "an agreement for national unity." Thus, in this episode, we use the Commonwealth's inconsistent and questionable approach to the political crisis in Sierra Leone to further illustrate the quandary that foreign diplomats and embassies face today in that small West African country. In late August 2023, the United States announced a visa restriction policy against individuals who undermined the democratic process in the June 2023 Sierra Leone elections. This visa restrictions policy followed an earlier United States government statement issued on 14 July 2023 demanding "an independent, outside investigation of the elections process" and integration of "observer recommendations to improve the electoral modalities for future elections" in Sierra Leone. Thus, in the July and August 2023 statements, the United States government expressed unambiguous concerns over "irregularities in the election results announced by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL)." State Department Spokesperson, Matthew Miller particularly noted that "independent parallel vote tabulations and analyses by accredited national and international observation missions raise questions about the integrity of the official results," and that United States was "disturbed by the reports of intimidation – including death threats – against domestic and international observers, civil society organizations, and ECSL personnel." Yet in October 2023, the United States Embassy in Sierra Leone issued several statements welcoming and endorsing the "Hotel Agreement" between the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and All Peoples Congress (APC) that has allowed politicians of the two parties to enter into a power-sharing arrangement without first addressing the illegalities and irregularities surrounding the June 2023 elections. And in January 2024, the United States announced a US$1.5 million grant to fund an "SLPP/APC Elections Review Committee" also without first investigating the conduct of the June 2023 elections, including human rights violations during the elections. Worse, this internationally backed process excludes the majority of political parties (more than 10 political parties) that contested the June 2023 elections, and it equally fails to consult the majority of civil society voices within and outside the country. In this episode, we highlight how this exclusionary approach to civic engagement in Sierra Leone does not advance democracy in the country. We also use the contradictory position(s) of the United States to illustrate the diplomatic dilemma now facing foreign embassies stationed in Sierra Leone. This episode is part of the VOICE FROM EXILE commentary series of the Africanist Press.

Uachtarán na Stát Aontaithe Joe Biden i gCo Lú tráthnóna. The President of the United States Joe Biden is in Cuaille, Co Louth, this evening, where he visited Carlin Castle - a Norman fort at the foot of Sliabh Feá - in the company of Tánaiste Micheál Martin. Tá Uachtarán na Stát Aontaithe Joe Biden i gCuaille, Co Lú, tráthnóna, mar ar thug sé cuairt ar Chaisleán Chairlinn – dún Normannach ag bun Shliabh Feá – i gcuideachta an Tánaiste Micheál Martin. The President's great-grandfather was from Co Louth and this is his third visit to the county since 2016. B'as Co Lú sin-seanathair an Uachtaráin agus seo an tríú sciuird aige ar an gcontae ó 2016. As the President's motorcade made its way through the town of Carlin, hundreds of people along the road welcomed the arrival of one of their own. Agus gluaisteán an Uachtaráin ag déanamh a bealaigh trí bhaile Chairlinn, chuir na céadta duine fáilte feadh an bhóthair roimh fhionnó duine dá gcuid féin. From Carlin, President Biden turned back and headed for Dundalk, where he is in for another hearty welcome. As Cairlinn, chas an tUachtarán Biden siar agus thug sé a aghaidh ar Dhún Dealgan, áit a bhfuil fáilte chroíúil eile i ndán dó. Earlier in the evening, after leaving Belfast, President Biden arrived at Dublin Airport, where he was welcomed by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. Níos túisce tráthnóna, tar éis dó Béal Feirste a fhágáil, tháinig an tUachtarán Biden go hAerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath, mar ar chuir an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar fáilte roimhe. Joe Biden also greeted others who had gathered at the airport to see him despite the bad weather. Bheannaigh Joe Biden chomh maith do dhaoine eile a bhí bailithe san aerfort lena fheiceáil ainneoin na drochaimsire. He also had a special meeting there with the staff of the United States Embassy and their families, and he also spoke with workers from the airport's fire service. Bhí cruinniú faoi leith aige ann freisin le foireann Ambasáid na Stát Aontaithe agus a dteaghlaigh, agus labhair sé chomh maith le hoibrithe ó sheirbhís dóiteáin an aerfoirt. However, the weather put a dent in his wheel – or rather a dent in the rotor – as he had to face Cho Lou in his reinforced car rather than by helicopter as planned. Chuir an aimsir eang sa roth aige, áfach – nó eang sa rótar ba chirte a rá – mar b'éigean dó aghaidh a thabhairt ar Cho Lú ina ghluaisteán treisithe seachas ar héileacaptar mar a bhí beartaithe. Israeli filmmaker, Maya Zinshtein's documentary Til Kingdom Come examines the unique relationship between evangelical Christians in America and the state of Israel. As Israel lies in a constant state of struggle between the Jews and Arabs, evangelical Christians pray for the restoration of the Holy Land to the Jewish people. With a steadfast belief in the Second Coming of Christ, evangelical political powers have become heavily involved in shaping American foreign policy towards Israel and the Middle East. With unparalleled access, the film delves into the relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the controversial decision to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem, and plans to annex the West Bank. Evangelical Christians cite these events as a necessary step toward the coming apocalypse because they believe that the Jewish people's establishment in the Holy Land is essential to God's plan for the End-Times. The film takes a deep dive into the unusual bond between these bedfellows and the entanglement of politics and religion. We Hold These Truths explains and challenges the beliefs of what is known as Christian Zionism in our award-winning film, Christian Zionism: The Tragedy & The Turning: Part I.

Last week's episode was about giving a holistic experience on what it takes to be a successful international student in the US and diaspora as a whole. In this episode, we dive deeper into resources that are available to prospective students in Africa to use if planning to apply to schools in the US. Our guest Richard Ewane, founder of The Student Advisor, explains the entire process of applying to college as an international student successfully with an emphasis on making it through the complex process of the F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy. If you are a student or parent of a prospective student who is confused and/or overwhelmed by the complex process of applying to college in the diaspora, then this episode is for you. Meet Our Guest Born in Cameroon, Richard Ewane attended primary school in Yaoundé and secondary school at Sacred Heart College Mankon, Bamenda. He then went to college in America, studying International Business and Economics at Ohio Northern University (ONU). Upon graduation, Mr. Ewane was hired by his alma mater, ONU, as an Admissions Counselor. After working at ONU, Mr. Ewane decided to return to Cameroon. He worked at the S. T. Muna Foundation for a few years and then he was recruited by the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé as the EducationUSA Advisor, working with prospective students, their families, and other stakeholders to gain admission to U.S. institutions. During his tenure at the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Ewane recorded a seventeen percent (17%) increase in the number of successful applications from the country, the largest increase in over a decade! Driven by his desire to improve the lives of his fellow Cameroonian youth, Richard left his position at the US Embassy and went to work as the Chief of Staff to the international lawyer and anti-corruption champion, Akere "Mr. Clean'' Muna, a candidate in Cameroon's 2018 presidential election. Simultaneously, he launched The Student Advisor to continue the work he has been doing for a decade – effecting change by providing educational opportunities to Cameroonians. Today, he continues to work with the then-presidential candidate on matters of good governance and anti-corruption across the globe, as well as run The Student Advisor. All with the goal of bringing positive change to his community. So what we do is consulting for students who have been denied visas or about to go for an interview and steer them in the right direction.” - Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “A lot of students will stand in their own way. This is because they work with- and receive advice from people who have no idea what they are talking about.” - Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “There could be way more [international students studying in America]. We have so many more qualified students who just fall through the cracks because they don't have information. When I started working at the US Embassy, I did a full media bliss and we ended up having a 17% increase in the number of Cameroonian students studying in the US.” -  Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “Disseminating correct information is really important for our students because they don't know. You have all these kids who got 5As in Advanced Level, they should be going to MIT and Stanford and Berkeley, but they don't know they can. And even when they've seen other people do it, they don't know how to go about it.” - Richard Ewane [Founder, The Student Advisor] “Life would have been way easier and better if I had this kind of opportunity [with The Student Advisor] prior to coming to the United States as an international student. It is really amazing how much we just try to figure it out by ourselves because we don't have any guidance.” - Anyoh Fombad LEAVE A REVIEW and tell us what you think about the episode so we can continue putting out the best content just for you! I HATE DONALD TRUMP!We the people heard that over and again in 2016, did we not? I may disagree with them, sometimes passionately so, but I never hated any politician, did you? To be sure, President Trump has a most unique personality. He is straightforward to a fault, confrontational, argumentative, interruptive, always on the ready for a verbal fight. He sometimes has that turn–off look on his face. He drinks no alcohol but he sure loves his food. You can predict the way he will dress, especially those long red ties, and his hair can often look like something not his own!He won the Republican nomination for President in 2016 even though he was by no means any kind of traditional Republican. He was then, is now and always will be:         HIS OWN MAN.Perhaps more a libertarian than a Republican. It is difficult at times to figure out what he is but you can judge the man by what he does. TRUMP IS A MAN OF HIS WORD! He does what he says he will do. Especially when it comes to Israel. The organization THE REPUBLICAN JEWISH COALITION (RJC) calls Trump “the most pro–Israel American President ever.” If the RJC comes to that conclusion as a result of what Trump has promised and what Trump has done, President Trump is indeed the most pro–Israel, pro–Jewish President ever.Mr. Trump has an unwavering commitment to defend the state of Israel. He understands that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, a strong ally of America, a buffer to radical and warlike Islamic states like Iran, and even a thorn in the side to Russia. Trump knows that it is for the good of America that Israel needs to survive and thrive. So, from the Trump Administration there comes a long litany of pro–Israel policies. In December 2017, President Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of the Jewish state. It was the capital when modern day Israel, then the land of Canaan, was occupied by the Jews and the twelve tribes. It was the capital city of David, Solomon and any number of kings thereafter. Jerusalem is steeped in Jewish history, tradition, occupancy, culture and lifestyle. It is in fact the ETERNAL CAPITAL OF THE JEWISH STATE AND RIGHT–THINKING PEOPLE. Such a declaration would never have been made by the Democrats and certainly not by Barack Hussein Obama. In May 2018, President Trump moved the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. At that time, Trump publicly declared in presidential fashion that Jerusalem was:         THE ETERNAL CAPITAL OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE.As such, the American embassy should be there, and not in Tel Aviv. Another bold move but the right move. Trump was loudly criticized by Democrats but for this President, the hateful harangues of critics and especially the Democrats are water off a duck's back. That is one great strength of Trump. He ignores hateful criticism and may even welcome that. Again, in May 2018, President Trump withdrew the United States of America from the IRAN NUCLEAR TREATY. In many ways, Trump knew that this treaty was trumped up, unenforceable, a sham and one which would eventually allow the participating nations and the world to see Iran with nuclear warfare capability. It was a treaty Iran could ignore, and it did, and even while professing adherence, all the while pursue the development of nuclear capability. Trump withdrew America from that sham of a treaty much to the consternation of America's European allies. Trumps response to that criticism was that those nations like America should also withdraw from this sham of a treaty. In November 2018, President Trump reinstituted crippling sanctions against Israel's main geopolitical enemy Iran. Most were economic and the full effects of this bold and audacious action rippled through the Iranian economy and culture. Not only did such presidential actions and sanctions have their intended geopolitical effects, but as well the sanctions caused unrest, dissent and even a certain kind of protest and rebellion on the part of right–thinking Iranian citizens. Trump knew the effect on the entire world which Iranian nuclear capability would have. He with Israel was determined to not allow that to happen. In March 2019, the United States recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. This is a territory once Syrian but captured in war by the Israelis and kept by them ever since. Syrians and their allies would camp on the Heights and fire indiscriminately on the Israelis and their territory below, an incredible military advantage. Israelis knew they had to maintain possession of the Golan Heights for their safety and security. They were of course loudly criticized by Palestinians and by Arab nations. To this day, Israelis maintain full possession of that unique and special territory. I have been there three times. It is well fortified. The Israelis keep watch 24/7 for any Syrian military activity even as they do for Lebanon with the militant, hateful Iranian–sponsored group military activity of Hamas and Hezbollah. Israeli soldiers, the IDF charged with the defense of that territory know how serious that task is and the guard is never down. These trained soldiers are tough, kill or be killed defenders of their precious PROMISED LAND. In November 2019, in a major reversal of prior US policy, the Trump Administration declared that Israelis settlement activity on so called Palestinian land is not necessarily illegal. In fact, all that land was historically Israeli and Jewish. I often wonder how real, true Jewish citizens could ever cede one inch of that precious historical and biblical territory which was always theirs. Current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes the same, and has pursued a reasonably aggressive settlement policy to his credit. We can be certain that more such settlements will occur or at least the attempt made to do so. If Trump is President, such moves will be sanctioned and supported. If Biden is elected, you can be certain there will be no such support and in fact, Israel will be sanctioned even punished if they do so. In January, Trump released his plan for peace in that war–like territory termed:         PEACE TO PROSPERITY.Such a plan gave the Palestinians the power to govern themselves which they have always sought but NOT the power to threaten Israel. This proposal, no matter how fair and realistic, was promptly rejected by Palestinian leaders as every such plan has been. It is time wasting, futile and DEAD ON ARRIVAL (DOA) to propose any plan of compromise to the Palestinians, other than one which would call for the elimination and removal of all Jews from that territory which the Palestinians regard as their own. As one Palestinian leader declared:PALESTINIANS WILL NEVER REST UNTIL EVERY JEW IN ISRAEL IS BURIED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA! And that, so it seems is the real attitude and thinking of the Palestinians which prevents any compromise or even negotiations for peace. Israelis know that and PRESIDENT TRUMP KNOWS THAT!President Trump has also pledged that the bond between the United States and Israel is “absolutely, totally unbreakable.” It should be. The United Nations, after World War II and the horrific Holocaust, reestablished Israel as the homeland for the Jewish people. Arab nations immediately went to war, any number of them only to lose every one of them. In the process, Israel was able to recapture much of the territory to which it was entitled and especially, their beloved capital city Jerusalem. There is no way any of that territory will be returned or given up. Right thinking Israelis resent to this day the unworkable compromise which occurred as the result of the disastrous plan:         LAND FOR PEACE.All that accomplished was the surrender of Jewish land, Israeli territory and Israel got nothing, absolutely nothing in return.Donald J. Trump is not a true Republican and he would probably admit that. He chafes at the spineless, compromising, often wishy–washy conduct of Republicans in Congress. Nor is he a Christian. But Trump, unlike Obama before him, or our current group of politicians:         DOES WHAT HE SAYS HE WILL DO.And that starts with the full defense and support of Israel and the Jews. It is as though Trump believes in the promises of the great GOD JEHOVAH in Genesis 12 which states the promise of the G–d of the Jews:I WILL BLESS THEM THAT BLESS YOU AND I WILL CURSE THEM THAT CURSE YOU. It is good that America, WE THE PEOPLE, are on the side of blessing rather than cursing. No right–thinking person, including the not – right–thinking politicians should ever want to incur the wrath of this powerful and almighty G–d of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and our Lord Jesus Christ. So, I for one am with you President Donald John Trump and I say exactly what you have said and promised:THE BOND BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND ISRAEL IS ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY UNBREAKABLE.The majority of American Jews vote Democrat and will not vote for Mr. Trump this year. In so doing, they show what they really think and feel about the Promised Land, the eternal home of all Jews. Such a vote seems to indicate that they really don't care what happens to Israel. What a shame. There are far more Evangelicals and gentiles who are much more pro–Israel than these seemingly non–caring Jews. And they, we will vote for Trump for there really is no alternative for those of us who believe in and love the land of Israel, the Promised Land. I will enthusiastically vote for Mr. Trump. It matters not his personal personality, but what matters are his policies, his political platforms and his promises. He has shown us that he will KEEP THEM. And that is more than good enough for me. I hope it is the same for you.
