In this thought-provoking episode, Rabbi Tovia Singer returns to unpack the deep-rooted Christian animosity toward the Oral Torah. From burning Talmudic texts to rejecting the Jewish calendar, Rabbi Singer explores the historical and theological reasons why Church leaders came to see the Oral Law as a threat. He explains how early Christians relied on the Oral Torah, even citing it in the New Testament, and how later Church doctrine turned against it. The discussion delves into missionary tactics, Jewish identity, the development of Christian theology, and how the Oral Torah continues to safeguard Jewish continuity. A vital episode for anyone seeking to understand the enduring power of our Talmud and how it defends against spiritual assimilation.Join the Conversation! We are now up to the 4 th pasuk in Ne'ilah , which is yet another proof that Hashem wants us to do teshuva and does not want us to die. Do I want the death of the wicked? And this is the word of Hashem, our God . Rather, when he returns and repents from his ways, and he lives It's interesting that every prayer in our Amida connects to pesukim . For quite a while, we've been focusing on the power of pesukim , and if anyone reads through the Rishonim they'll see exactly how the Anshei Knesset HaGedolah matched our prayers to pesukim, with the exact amount of words corresponding to certain pesukim . The Tur says that the pasuk of Zochrenu L'Chaim/ Remember us for life has 11 words: זָכְרֵֽנוּ לְחַיִּים מֶֽלֶךְ חָפֵץ בַּחַיִּים וְכָתְבֵֽנוּ בְּסֵֽפֶר הַחַיִּים לְמַעַנְךָ אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים , corresponding to the 11 words in this pasuk . And how do we know that everything needs to source? Because the Siddur is Torah Sh'B'al Peh/the Oral Law, and the Oral Law has to be rooted in the Written Law. So I know that God is a Melech Chafetz B'Chaim; that He wants life because it says in this pasuk, from Yehezkiel , " I don't want the death of the wicked. Rather, I want them to live. " And when we say Zocherenu L'Chaim, we're invoking this pasuk . We say it in Ne'ilah to remind ourselves that God wants our teshuva. The sefer Shem M'Shmuel Toldot in the year תרעז says that because God is the Ultimate Good and is the Ultimate Kind One, He wants to constantly bring us closer. Like we just said in this pasuk , God doesn't want the wicked person to die. So what does God do? God arouses us in teshuva. God sends messages to our heart to awaken us in teshuva . That's Hashem's will. It's not a coincidence that we sometimes suddenly feel something in our hearts. When we feel something in our hearts, it's because God, Who loves us so much and wants us to come closer to Him, is sending us messages. That's really what we're feeling at Ne'ilah - we're feeling Hashem saying to us, I don't want you to mess up. I'm deciding now, and I want you to live . And live doesn't just mean a physical life. God wants you to have a spiritual life. So feel that and understand it at the moment of Neilah . The sefer Or Torah tells us that the Midrash says that if a person sins a sin that is liable to get Mita Biydeh Shamayim /a death penalty from the heavens, if he used to learn one page of Gemarah, he should learn two. If he learned one chapter of Mishnayot , learn two. Increase your Torah learning-that is a way to have your sins forgiven. That's what this pasuk means. Hashem says, I don't want you to die. And not just that I don't want you to die Mitah Byedeh Shamayim, but I don't want you to kill yourself with all kinds of fasts and ways of pain that weaken your body so that you're almost dead. That's not what I want. I want you to learn Torah . Torah gives life, so the best way to do teshuva is not through killing yourself, but by doing something that will cause you to live, which is learning Torah. Put your efforts and your pain into learning as it says, השיבינו אבינו לתורתך Return us in Teshuva to Your Torah. Rabbenu Yona, in Shaare Teshuva (chapter 4) speaks about this at length, and says that when a person is liable for suffering, the best suffering is putting your suffering into learning . That means you toil and the pain that you have in your eyes, the pain that you have in your body, all those pains from feeling tired or you're hungry or whatever it is, because you're learning and you're toiling and you're putting your efforts in, that is the best possible suffering. And it's a mitzvah at the same time! Therefore, Yechezkiel is telling us, and we say in Ne'ilah, Hashem doesn't want us to suffer. He doesn't want us to be in pain . He wants us to live, and live a good life. We just have to come back to Him.

The Jews themselves endorse my perspective of what the Bible teaches; name, that the Holy Scriptures and Jesus Christ are utterly antisemetic.  This podcast highlights two articles from the Jerusalem Post, written by Jews, that explain the Pharisees, the Oral Law, the irredeemable Semitic nature of the New Testament, and proudly proclaim the Jewish work of establishing an "oral tradition" to over-ride what is literally written  in the Bible. If we are to free ourselves from the Luciferian Theocracy that enslaves us, we must be unapologetic about recognizing that the devil's children are running this show. These two articles, by Jew and for Jews, help us understand how the Church has gone astray. Is the New Testament Antisemitic? Who Were the Pharisees? Fritz Berggren, PHD bloodandfaith.com

A new mishnah: the rights of the worker to eat - but what if the value of the produce he eats is more than his wages? It's a machloket. Plus, fine-tuning the extent of these rights. Plus, a hidden scroll of Oral Law quoting Isi bar Yehudah. Also, when a worker ears while working, is that food on top of his wages or is he permitted to eat from that which is not his? Plus, the workers isn't always entitled to eat, nor does he have to, even when he's allowed.

I am so glad you are with us today on Gospel Spice. Join us as we dive into the transformative power of Jesus and the mosaic of people forming the Kingdom of Heaven! Let's explore the rich tapestry of stories in the Gospel of Matthew and discover the incredible ways each person adds their unique flavor of mint.  Last week, we met a leper, a gentile centurion, and a bold woman who challenged the rulers. Now, we're introduced to Matthew himself, a former tax collector who boldly declares Jesus as Messiah. I invite you to join me and witness Matthew's gutsy conversion story. It is moving, tender, and powerful. He leaves everything to follow Jesus, and in doing so, publicly defies the rulers. Jesus' reply to the Pharisees' question about eating with tax collectors and sinners exposes their own merciless contradictions – and honors Matthew's young faith. Next, Jesus addresses fasting, and specifically, why His disciples don't fast like the Pharisees and John the Baptist's followers. He explains that the bridegroom, Jesus himself, is here, and it's a time for celebration. Fasting will come when he's taken away, showing the importance of regular fasting for seeking God's will. Jesus goes on to challenge the Pharisees' reliance on the Oral Law and emphasizes the fulfillment of the Written Law through His work on the cross. The Pharisees are sure to get hysterical over this! The intertwined stories of Jairus and the bleeding woman showcase the unwavering faith that unites people from all walks of life. Jairus, a synagogue leader, and an unnamed woman who defied the Law to touch Jesus's tassels, both find hope and healing in Messiah's surpassing grace. As we continue to experience Jesus ever deeper as our Rabbi and Lord through the eyes of Matthew, let's remember that each person in the Kingdom of Heaven adds a unique flavor of mint. Their stories of faith, courage, and redemption remind us that Jesus invites us all to be part of this incredible mosaic. I could not be more delighted to have you tagging along with me in the hallowed pages of Scripture today. I hope you will find your faith strengthened, and your time well used. Thank you! Are you looking for a place to take notes, some topics to research on your own, or some questions you could ponder to go deeper during your quiet time with God or with a friend? Remember, we have workbooks available for this episode, and every other episode of our Jesus Rabbi and Lord series. We want a warm, welcoming atmosphere to journey ever deeper into the heart of God. We believe it is the ultimate calling of the Christian life, and I like to summarize it with my motto, God's glory, our delight. That is why we invite you to “taste and see” that the Lord is good. And we have been doing this every day since 2019. We need YOU to keep Gospel Spice alive and growing.   Financially speaking, we rely on people who understand this vision and who understand that we cannot function without a minimum budget. We run an extremely tight budget. For example, I work full time but don't draw a salary. And yet, we have expenses – for example, the equipment and technology we use, and also the wonderfully gifted staff who make it possible to deliver high quality content all around the globe, and then the necessary occasional promotional budget to make it possible to be discovered by those who seek to live a life spiced with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We need your help.   So we would love for you to consider if this ministry is blessing you to pay gospel spice forward. You can partner with us monthly with 10, 25, 50, 100, a month, or you can make one donation, once. And because we are a register nonprofit organization in the United States under the status of a 501c3 charity, it means that the amount that you pay to gospel spice is fully tax deductible. Completely tax deductible. So you're even saving money as you invest in gospel spice ministries. It is an eternal investment, and we are very grateful to you for it. Now it's very important to us that we give back as much as possible from what you give us. And so we commit to giving the majority of what we receive, once all of our administrative costs are paid, to organizations that fight human trafficking on the front line. There are many worthwhile causes in the world, so why this one? Because I have always personally felt deep compassion for victims of human trafficking – maybe because I have never been its victim myself, so I feel a responsibility to help those less fortunate than me. Also, because Jesus tells us to love our neighbor. Human trafficking is modern day slavery, and that is something that revolts the heart of God. We want to play our part in raising awareness and then financially supporting those who fight this great evil.   So, we do some due diligence. We pick organizations who have proven themselves trustworthy of our support. And then we give money to these Christians organizations that fight human trafficking. So would you consider paying us forward at gospelspice.com/payitforward? Your hard-earned money is always well used at Gospel Spice. Ultimately, you are giving back to the Kingdom, a portion of what Jesus has given you. We are well aware of the privilege to steward your partnership. And my prayer is always that you will find your own life spiced with the gospel as you partner with us to flavor the lives of those around us, near and far, with the spice of the gospel. Why Do People Convert to Judaism? Esther 8:17. Matthew 4:8-9 Matthew 23:15 Many different people become Jews. Why? What did Satan offer to Jesus Christ? Who were the Pharisees? The excerpts are from the Jersualem Post, "Who Were the Pharisees?" "In Jewish tradition, the Pharisees are forerunners of the rabbis in theology and practice. This group of scribes and teachers established the foundation of Judaism for two millennia and are heroes in Jewish history. The reality is that the grand concept at the heart of Pharisaic Judaism—the Oral Law—enabled the Pharisees to have wide latitude in interpretation of Jewish law and Hebrew Scripture. The concept of an Oral Law given to Moses in addition to the Written Law gave the Pharisees the ability to transcend a literalism that could be crippling in any attempt to interpret Jewish law. The Oral Law is the foundation of rabbinic Judaism and has granted rabbis the authority to reach heights of great creativity in interpretation of Jewish law. The Pharisees were the forerunners of the rabbis in introducing this critical concept that has been the groundwork of rabbinic Judaism for 2000 years. In opposition to the Christian concept of Law as being constricting and limiting, Rabbinic Judaism—the heir to the Pharisees--has proven many times that Law can be liberating."   Fritz Berggren www.bloodandfaith.com

TRADITION's Summer 2023 issue, recently made fully open access, contained a fascinating offering penned by Michael A. Shmidman, our distinguished editor emeritus, titled “Isadore Twersky's Unique Contribution to the Study of The Guide of the Perplexed.” It is a presentation and analysis of five integral and interlocking components of Rabbi Professor Isadore (Yitzhak) Twersky's understanding of Maimonides' formulation of the relationship between the philosophic tradition and the Oral Law, particularly as expressed in the Moreh Nevukhim. Shmidman suggests that all of Maimonides' works, as viewed by Twersky, “promote the integration, the blending, the fusion of law and philosophy. We should not bifurcate the most central Jewish figure of the medieval era into Rambam the halakhist and Maimonides the philosopher, but rather view his work as one united entity.” Because R. Twersky's major scholarly focus was on the Mishneh Torah, his unique contribution to the study of The Guide of the Perplexed is, Shmidman suggests, sadly underappreciated—and that contribution is the focus of this essay. Michael A. Shmidman is Dean and Professor of Jewish History at Touro University Graduate School of Jewish Studies. This most recent essay originated as a lecture at a conference commemorating the 25th yahrzeit of R. Isadore Twersky convened at Yeshiva University's Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University (on September 11, 2022). We thought our readers would appreciate listening to Shmidman's talk alongside reading his essay at TraditionOnline.org. The recordings of all the lectures at that daylong event, “Understanding Halakhah, History & Spirituality,” can be found on Revel's YouTube channel—and we thank our friends at the Bernard Revel Graduate School for sharing this resource with our listeners.

What did the First Christians believe about the Old Testament? I might as well have asked what they believed about the Bible because, as the faith developed, the Old Testament was all the written word they had. Jesus himself laid the groundwork for a uniquely Christian understanding of the Scriptures.Consider, for example, one fundamental difference between Pharisees and Sadducees. The Pharisees believed that God gave the law to Moses in two forms: oral and written. That is, that Moses got the written law (including the Ten Commandments) and then he got the Oral Law to go with it. This Oral Law was passed on to Joshua who received it and passed it on to the next generation, who in turn, received it and passed it on. Thus they believed that what they received from the earlier generation of Rabbis was what God told Moses on Sinai. The record of the oral law today is found in the Talmud. The Sadducees believed no such thing. They believed that the written law was the only law that carried divine authority. I think Moses comes down on that side of the issue, because he said plainly that he wrote down everything God told him. You may wonder where this expression, Oral Law came from, for it is not found in the New Testament, nor the Old, for that matter. The New Testament writers knew about it, of course, but declined to refer to it in those terms. Rather, they called it the traditions of the elders. Let's look at several instances where these traditions were challenged.

Rabbi Ari Kahn's The Crowns on the Letters: Essays on the Aggada and the Lives of the Sages (OU Press, 2020) represents a major achievement in the study of the lives of our Sages, as well as in the study of rabbinic Aggada. The 49 days we count between Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot are an exciting time for powerful and impactful change. The Mishna (Avot 6:6) teaches us 48 masterful tools and ways to maximize life and get the most out of each day. In this episode, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe talks about Way 15: B'Mishnah - With the Oral Law, and shares great insights, stories and lessons from the teaching of our sages on the explanations of everything that is in the Written Law, The Torah. Born to Win Podcast - with Ronald L. Dart

The Sermon on the Mount is easily the best known of all Jesus’ discourses, probably because every beginning preacher is encouraged by his mentor to speak about that sermon. So even if you don’t read the Bible very much, you still would have heard, Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. The sermon is a memorable work, with the poetic beatitudes leading the way. Each of these could be the subject for a much longer exposition. Blessed are the meek, for example, would make a strong theme for a full sermon. But early on in Jesus’ discourse that day, there is a statement that challenges the very structure of some Christian doctrine. Jesus said plainly that we are not to think something, which a surprising number of Christians think anyway. Here it is, in Jesus own words:Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.Matthew 5:17–18 NIVThere are two criteria that have to be in place for a comma or the crossing of a T to pass from the law. One: Heaven and earth have to disappear. (As I record this program, they are still here.) Two: Everything must be accomplished. And there is a rather large array of things that God has said he will do that haven’t rolled around yet, so we’re still waiting. This poses a huge problem for anyone who is aware of the contents of the law that Jesus is talking about. Let me explain what I mean.
