Crusaders captain Scott Barrett has been hit with a four week suspension following his red card in last Friday's defeat to the Blues.Barrett was shown a red card in the 46th minute the Super Rugby Pacific clash after making clear contact with his shoulder to the jaw of Alex Hodgman. In other suspensions, Highlanders lock Josh Dickson has been dismissed for three weeks after getting red-carded for an early hit on Tevita Mafileo in their loss to the Hurricanes at Dunedin.Hurricanes hooker Asafo Aumua has also been banned for three weeks for making head contact in the same game.In Barrett's case, Hodgman spilled a pass as he headed into the tackle and, with the ball gone, Barrett connected with the head while making no attempt to wrap his right arm.Hodgman stayed down to receive attention and, after a quick consultation with TMO Aaron Paterson, referee Mike Fraser showed the Crusaders captain a red card as the home fans booed.Commentator Justin Marshall said Barrett was "going to be in big trouble" since the hit was late and collected Hodgman "flush on the jaw"."There's nothing mitigating it," Marshall said. "I don't think there was any intent, but the way it transpired, it was late and he didn't do enough to avoid the collision."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It is how you can refocus your thinking when what comes to mind automatically has left your thinking stuck, sidetracked, cognitively biased, or otherwise in error. Introspection on thinking — more specifically, identifying what to think about next to get your thinking back on track to its goal — is the skill needed for getting this process going. Introspection on thinking is, I believe, the most important cognitive skill that is not yet explicitly taught at any level of schooling.Lee Pierson, who holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Cornell University, has conducted Creatical Thinking and other seminars for students from grade school to grad school and beyond, for a variety of educational and corporate clients in the United States and Canada. Crusaders 40Highlanders 20The Highlanders waited two years for the chance to host their southern neighbours. Two years too long after this instant classic under the Dunedin roof.Southern derbies always cultivate an extra edge. This breathless match, in which the Highlanders were overrun after leading 17-14 at the break, was no different.Five years to the day since their first and only Super Rugby title, the Highlanders threw everything and more at the Crusaders. So often that is not enough, though. Just ask the Chiefs who did likewise in Christchurch last week. To take down the Crusaders opposition must reach near perfection; nail all their chances and even then hope a slice of luck and the referee is on their side. The final quarter of this game the Crusaders came into their clinical own, controlling the possession, pace and tempo to grind out their third straight Super Rugby Aotearoa victory, with Richie Mo'unga kicking 15 points.Once again the Crusaders showed all the hallmarks we've come to expect from the three-time defending champions – a level of composure that sets the bar for others to match.Highlanders wing Jona Nareki will regret his decision to throw the dummy with two men unmarked outside him midway through the second half. It was a movement that would have given the Highlanders the lead – instead the Crusaders did enough to snuff it out and the home side had to settle for three points. There were other defining moments, of course, but with the Crusaders prevailing five-tries-to-two thanks to twin Tom Christie second-half strikes, Nareki's decision was a key turning point. The other came from Crusaders halfback Mitchell Drummond, who fired a brilliant cutout pass that gave Sevu Reece just enough space to score the game's decisive try.Aaron Smith led the Highlanders out as captain and he was then their spark all night. His passing, kicking, running, organisation and defence – one bootlace tackle on Codie Taylor in particular – was a class above. On this occasion, the All Blacks halfback could do no wrong and it was a surprise to see him replaced for the closing stages. Smith had great support from former All Blacks blindside Shannon Frizell, Pari Pari Parkinson and Dillon Hunt who all carried and attacked the breakdown relentlessly. For the Crusaders, Will Jordan continues to light up the New Zealand derby competition. Despite moving from fullback to the wing Jordan was equally involved and influential as in recent weeks, popping up all over the park and finishing the match by claiming his brace with another runaway try.Taylor, the All Blacks hooker, also delivered another standout display. The brutal nature of these derby games claimed further casualties with Crusaders fullback David Havili limping off after a break, while the Highlanders lost lock Josh Dickson, who has been influential in running their lineout this season, to a serious ankle injury. The Crusaders brought more poise to the initial exchanges and they were rewarded when Jordan snuck over in the corner for the opening try. The visitors' scrum did the damage early with several huge shunts – the Highlanders not helped in this department by losing Dickson. The Highlanders needed to settle and they did just that with a double strike. Frizell stepped up with three telling carries in the same movement. With the final one, he burst through Michael Alaalatoa's tackle to power his way to the line. That try turned the tide with the Highlanders enjoying a run of possession. From their overthrown lineout Smith swooped with his speed and anticipation to break the line and the Crusaders could then not stop quick hands sending Ngane Punivai over to give the Highlanders the lead.Discipline was an issue for the Highlanders as they conceded a 13-7 penalty count – many of these infringements at the breakdown – but they had every right to take umbrage with referee Mike Fraser after he missed an obvious forward pass from Taylor in the lead up to Mo'unga's...

This is definitely the case with Ayn Rand’s novels, where we often bear witness to the internal monologues of the heroes and the villains. So what can literature tell us about psychology? What can it reveal to us about the human mind? Is it realistic to draw conclusions for real life based on the inner thoughts of fictional heroes? Can novels show us who we are, how we think, and why we choose as we do?Josh Dickson is an addictions counsellor, trauma therapist and positive psychologist. But in times of crisis, many people are craving some good news that will give them hope for a better future. What is the role of optimism in one’s psychology and sense of life? Is it an evasion to focus on good news, and prioritise them over gloomy and worrying prospects? How can one be an optimist in the current philosophical and cultural atmosphere, when the signs are that things are probably not going to be fine?
Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger has explained the decision to play Josh Ioane in the midfield after the 23-year-old's shock positional switch for the Super Rugby season.Just a year removed from his breakout campaign as the Highlanders' first-choice first five-eighth earned him a place in the All Blacks squad, Ioane has been wearing the No12 jersey for the entirety of the 2020 season so far.Speaking to Radio Sport's D'Arcy Waldegrave, Mauger said that's where Ioane's future in the game could lie."In terms of what he can do and his all-around game, I think he's a guy who can really push for higher honours in that role, being a genuine 12/10 option."Josh Ioane earned a spot in the All Blacks squad last year. Photo / PhotosportIoane has ceded the No10 jersey to new recruit Mitch Hunt, who joined the club from the Crusaders following the 2019 campaign, while Josh McKay and Michael Collins have shared duties at fullback.Running two playmakers in the starting XV allows the Highlanders to play at pace, which has shown promise through the opening rounds of the season."I think if you look at the two opportunities we finished last week (against the Crusaders), those guys were both in amongst it," Mauger pointed out."We want to play fast, there's no secret to it."While the youthful Highlanders squad has shown signs of promise, that is yet to translate onto the scoreboard. Through four rounds of the competition, the Highlanders average a shade less than 19 points per game, better than only the Waratahs (16) and Bulls (12).Both teams below the Highlanders in average points per game are yet to win a game this season, while the Highlanders have won just once – a comeback win against the Brumbies in Canberra in which they scored the winning points after the final hooter had sounded.Heading into Friday night's clash against the Rebels in Dunedin, Mauger made a couple of tweaks to his starting squad to "freshen things up".Prop Ayden Johnstone and hooker Liam Coltman swap places with Daniel Lienert-Brown and Ash Dixon, the latter moving into the starting side, while lock Jack Whetton replaces the injured Josh Dickson and Teariki Ben-Nicholas replaces Shannon Frizell who is observing his first All Blacks rest week.In the back line, McKay earns a recall to the starting side on the wing, with Collins retaining the No15 jersey.

All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith has made a rapid return to the Highlanders for their crucial Super Rugby derby against the Blues.Smith was to be out for six weeks after injuring his ankle against in the Highlanders' last match with the Blues, but instead has returned after just two games, to be named on the bench for the game on Saturday night.Fellow All Black Luke Whitelock has also returned from injury as the Highlanders aim to end a winless streak which stretches back to February.Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger praised the pair for their quick returns."[Smith] and Luke have both worked incredibly hard to make themselves available and their return this week provides the team with a bit of a boost,'' said Mauger."We are aware of the challenges the Blues will bring on Saturday, all the New Zealand conference games bring a high degree of intensity.''A third All Black - forward Jackson Hemopo - will return at lock to partner Tom Franklin at Forsyth Barr Stadium, while Sio Tomkinson takes the place of Rob Thompson, who is unavailable for family reasons.Highlanders: Ben Smith, Matt Faddes, Sio Tomkinson, Teihorangi Walden, Tevita Li, Josh Ioane, Kayne Hammington, Elliot Dixon, James Lentjes, Shannon Frizell, Tom Franklin, Jackson Hemopo, Tyrel Lomax, Liam Coltman, Daniel Lienert-Brown.Reserves: Ash Dixon, Ayden Johnstone, Siate Tokolahi, Josh Dickson, Luke Whitelock, Aaron Smith, Bryn Gatland, Thomas Umaga-Jensen.
Two key Highlanders will miss Friday night's Super Rugby derby against the Crusaders in Christchurch.Having lost first five Marty Banks to a broken foot, co-captain Luke Whitelock has been ruled out with a calf issue.Openside flanker James Lentjes says that's the nature of intra-conference play.“These Kiwi derbys are always physical, so you can always expect to lose a couple of players here and there, so it’s just a chance for someone else to step up and get involved.”That will be first-five Josh Ioane, who will start his first match since their round four loss to the Hurricanes last month.Fullback Ben Smith will captain the side on his 150th Super Rugby match for the Highlanders, taking the armband duties from Luke Whitelock who has been ruled out due to a calf niggle.Highlanders: Ben Smith (captain), Matt Faddes, Rob Thompson, Teihorangi Walden, Tevita Li, Josh Ioane, Kayne Hammington, Elliot Dixon, James Lentjes, Shannon Frizell, Tom Franklin, Pari Pari Parkinson, Tyrel Lomax, Liam Coltman, Daniel Lienert-Brown.
