On this week's episode, we begin by paying tribute to Baseball Hall of Famer and Pirates legend Bill Mazeroski, who passed away at age 87. From there, we discuss Tony Clark's resignation under scandal as Executive Director of the MLBPA, and Bruce Meyer's interim elevation. We then discuss Pat Murphy and AJ Preller's extensions, and minor league deals signed since the start of Spring Training. To wrap up, we go through each season since 2000, and debate what was the best MLB game played each season.
Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley banter about a generous podcast listener, Bruce Meyer’s elevation to interim executive director of the MLBPA, his framing of the sport’s competitive challenges, media messaging vis-à-vis the owners’ and players’ potential responsibility for missed games in 2027, and the creep of pitch-calling from the dugout, then preview the 2026 Detroit Tigers (53:35) with The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen, and the 2026 Athletics (1:31:28) with A’s on SI’s Jason Burke. 2026 EW Season Preview Series ALBALCHWATHBOSCLEHOUNYYDETLAATBRKCRSEATORMINTEX NLATLCHCARIMIACINCOLNYMMILLADPHIPITSDPWSNSTLSFG .intro-team, .intro-team td { font-family: lato, Arial, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 20px; } .intro-team .intro-header { /*display: none;*/ text-align: center; } .team-lg { text-align: center; width: 100%; } /* [class^="team-box-"] > div { display: inline-block; width: 48%; } [class^="team-box-"] > div table { width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; } [class^="team-box-"] > div td { background-color: #efefef; border: 1px solid #ccc; line-height: 2; text-align: center; cursor: default; } [class^="team-box-"] > div a { color: #000; text-decoration: none; display: block; width: 100% } [class^="team-box-"] > div a:hover { color: #50ae26; } [class^="team-box-"] > div a.link-inactive { color: #aaa; } */ Audio intro: Harold Walker, “Effectively Wild Theme” Audio interstitial 1: Liz Panella, “Effectively Wild Theme” Audio interstitial 2: Dave Armstrong and Mike Murray, “Effectively Wild Theme” Audio outro: Alex Ferrin, “Effectively Wild Theme” Link to Reddit comment Link to “meatspace” explainer Link to “meatbag” explainer Link to Meyer comments 1 Link to Meyer comments 2 Link to BP on competitive balance Link to Drellich on Meyer Link to Passan on the MLBPA Link to Crizer on dugout pitch-calling Link to EW on 2025 dugout pitch-calling Link to Bendix comments Link to Giants pitch-calling article Link to Vitello comments Link to Rockies article Link to Ben on in-game interviews Link to team payrolls page Link to Tigers offseason tracker Link to Tigers depth chart Link to catcher WAR leaderboard Link to Cody’s author archive Link to Cody’s podcast Link to Athletics offseason tracker Link to Athletics depth chart Link to FG top 100 Link to Vegas promotions Link to Sacramento jerseys Link to Jason’s author archive Sponsor Us on Patreon Give a Gift Subscription Email Us: podcast@fangraphs.com Effectively Wild Subreddit Effectively Wild Wiki Apple Podcasts Feed Spotify Feed YouTube Playlist Facebook Group Bluesky Account Twitter Account Get Our Merch! var SERVER_DATA = Object.assign(SERVER_DATA || {}); Source
The Major League Baseball Players Association had a major shakeup this week after union head Tony Clark resigned from his position following an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law. This shocking news has caused a ripple effect with collective bargaining agreement discussions set to begin next offseason. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss why this controversy is such a big deal as the players' union looks for strong leadership ahead of upcoming negotiations. They then dive into the newly elected leader, Bruce Meyer, and why he is an interesting choice to lead the players at a crucial moment as the league prepares for 2027 and beyond. Later, Jake and Jordan are joined by Yahoo Fantasy analyst Scott Pianowski, who gives his expert opinion on whether Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani or Bobby Witt Jr. should be the number one overall pick in your draft — and which sleepers you should have your eye on. Then, the guys discuss the Milwaukee Brewers giving Pat Murphy an extension and why Tony Vitello felt the need to clarify his move to the majors. To close the show, Jake and Jordan make their picks for this week's edition of The Good, The Bad & The Uggla. 2:02 – The Opener: MLBPA drama 13:33 – Who is Bruce Meyer? 29:03 – Fantasy baseball advice 49:26 – Around the League: Murphy extension 52:35 – Tony Vitello clears things up 58:02 – The Good, The Bad & The Uggla Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:
Today's word of the day is ‘interim' as in MLBPA as in executive director as in Bruce Meyer as in Tony Clark as in a new day. Bruce Meyer, who was the No. 2 in the union, got elected unanimously to lead this next round of negotiations. What changes? Who has the advantage at the table? (23:45) MLB teams are getting more honest. Well, some of them are. You are hearing from Cleveland Guardians GM Mike Chernoff about why his team cannot spend big money like other teams can. Uh oh. It starts with a deep dive into baseball's labor storm, but this segment goes everywhere. The Athletic's Evan Drellich joins to unpack the fallout from Tony Clark's exit, Bruce Meyer taking charge, looming CBA negotiations, salary cap battles, revenue sharing fights, deferred contracts, and whether missing games or even replacement players could become reality. From there, the conversation turns into a full-blown fan perspective on money in sports, why nobody trusts ownership finances, whether teams like the Dodgers are actually doing anything wrong by spending, and how big-market clubs, small-market teams, and franchise values all collide behind the scenes. And because no show stays serious for long, the hour also veers into classic midday chaos: debates about who really makes money in baseball, YES Network rabbit holes, Cinco-style rankings of the WORST months of the year (sparked by a brutal winter), callers chiming in with hot takes, Olympic vs. WBC fandom arguments, Tom Brady hypotheticals, food polls, and pure radio nonsense. Smart analysis, fan frustration, unexpected comedy, and total lack of control, all in one segment.
Everything you need to understand about baseball's looming labor war, all in one conversation. The Athletic's Evan Drellich joins to break down the stunning fallout from Tony Clark's exit, the federal investigation cloud hanging over the union, and why installing Bruce Meyer just months before bargaining begins is far from ideal. We dig into the biggest question facing the sport: is a salary cap showdown inevitable? Hear why owners are expected to push hard for one, why players have fought it for decades, and how internal ownership politics could decide everything before negotiations with players even begin. The discussion also explores franchise values, skyrocketing player salaries, shrinking local TV money, and why even big-market teams might secretly benefit from a cap. Plus: could games actually be lost, or will too much money on the line force a deal? Would replacement players ever be considered in today's union landscape? How deferred mega-contracts like the Dodgers' are fueling owner vs. owner tension. And why revenue sharing, not a cap, might be the real battleground. Finally, the hosts react to Chris Bassett's comments on parity, debate whether MLB's system already produces competitive balance, and land on the fan's biggest frustration: without financial transparency from ownership, how can anyone trust the argument for a salary cap at all? A comprehensive, no-nonsense breakdown of the power struggle that could reshape baseball's future.

Tony Clark's resignation went from “boring labor story” to absolute baseball soap opera when an internal MLBPA investigation revealed an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law. That sparks a hilarious, surprisingly intense debate over which version is worse, then the conversation flips fast to the real baseball fear: did this just put a work stoppage on the fast track? Hour 1 breaks down why owners may smell leverage, why the interim MLBPA decision (including the Bruce Meyer factor) matters, and how a salary cap fight could turn into a long, ugly standoff. Plus calls on floors vs harsher luxury tax penalties, keeping homegrown stars, and the lingering paranoia from 1994: miss games… and still change nothing.

Note: Strong language warning. We bleeped the F-bombs but left the other swear words unbleeped! In this Slow Baja Podcast conversation, I sit down with off-road personality and Shreddy brand founder Blake Wilkey and filmmaker extraordinaire Michael Squier. The duo teamed up to run a Manx Remastered in the 2023 NORRA Mexican 1000 Slow Baja Safari Class. From Squier, we get an update on the smashing success of his Baja Bug Movie. And a brief history lesson on Bruce Meyer's record Baja run from 1967 that led to the first Off-Road Race. We dive deeply into Wilkey and Squier's five days in the Slow Baja Safari Class. And their unabashed delight in running a Manx Dune Buggy 1286 miles --with a smile on their face and their foot firmly planted on the floor. Our conversation concludes with Wilkey and Squier's new film project, "Urban Assault 3," where Wilkey rips his VW-themed trophy truck, “Jaws,” through the streets of Tijuana. This film is a fully-sanctioned project in the style of his famous 2016 video "San Diego Shark Attack Urban Assault" that went viral with over 3M views and resulted in Wilkey spending 45 days in jail. Lamenting... or Whining? Steve talks to Bruce Meyer from BJU Seminary about what it means to lament versus to complain. Should you do either? This mission, like others, requires funding. So, if you feel led to help support this effort, you can make a tax-deductible donation online HERE. Thank You!
With Jeff Smith, Steve Strope, and Cam Benty Presented by ARP Terry Karges, the Executive Director of the famed Petersen Automotive Museum invites the Car Guys to tour the museum and share its history, his own past with Roush Performance and his favorites of each car collection on display. Jeff and Cam are both alumni of the Hot Rod Petersen publishing empire that's legacy is preserved at the museum. Along with famed car collector Bruce Meyer, and many others, Terry oversaw the transformation of the car history museum into a modern automotive art gallery. Their goal is to bring together automotive enthusiasts of all types, from lowriders to classic cars and Hollywood movie car fanatics. And not only preserve history but look towards the future of cars and transportation. This is seen clearly in their massive Tesla exhibit and past Hypercar exhibits alongside classic race cars of the past. Bruce MeyerI have been fortunate to meet so many extraordinary people over the years, but there are some that really do inspire you, and Bruce Meyer is one of those true gentlemen that I am just blessed to call a friend.Often called the ‘unofficial Mayor of Beverly Hills', Bruce just seems to know everyone and they in turn adore him back. People gravitate to his engaging demeanor, and I think its not just me that wishes they could come back as him in the next life! His extraordinary car collection is secretly located just feet above the visiting tourists, and yet to any of us in his car world, it is a place for us to meet and enjoy some of the most beautiful cars ever built. But I am always intrigued on how do people achieve this level of success, what was their motivation, how did they pull it off?I knew little of his journey and so sitting down in his garage was a real treat, and learning the whole story makes him even more impressive.A true car guy and the perfect role model.I hope you enjoy it.JB
