Rev Debbie Garret explores the parable commonly entitled the Parable of the Prodigal Son, or the parable of the Loving Father.Debbie writes"In Monday morning's prayer in the NZPB the Gospel reflection says: “Would any of you who are parents give your child a weta when asked for a fish?  Bad as you are, you know what to give your children.”  We want the best for our children, even when it is costly to us.  The Gospel is filled with images of lost treasures being found and the story of the prodigal son is one of them.  There are three main characters: the grieving father, the wayward son, and the resentful son.  Is there one that you most closely identify with?  Or maybe all three of them tug at your heart strings? Joyce Rupp, in her book “Fresh Bread” reminds us that Lent is a time to look at Jesus, and to see what he held dear, and to recognize anew how he refound all of us through his death and resurrection. An Autumn Prayer Opening Prayer: O God of Creation, you have blessed us with the changing of the seasons. As we welcome the autumn months, may the earlier setting of the sun remind us to take time to rest. May the brilliant colors of the leaves remind us of the wonder of your creation. May the steam of our breath in the cool air remind us that it is you who give us the breath of life. May the harvest from the fields remind us of the abundance we have been given and bounty we are to share with others. May the dying of summer's spirit remind us of your great promise that death is temporary and life is eternal. We praise you for your goodness forever and ever. Amen. Reading: Autumn is the season of letting go, of surrender. The mood of autumn is the ebb and flow of life. Autumn stands as an epiphany to the truth that all things are passing and even in the passing there is beauty. Autumn holds out platters of death and life. As the bright colors of fall fade away, and the leaves make their final descent, rich brown and charcoal colors take center stage. This is the decaying season, but the rotting ritual that surrounds us has another face. Compost and mulch are food for the soil. There is life in the dying. Moments of death are full of life and our fear of the unknown sometime hides that life. All this dying is a prophecy of life to come. Everything is dying—TO LIVE. -from The Circle of Life: The Heart's Journey Through the Seasons, Joyce Rupp and Macrina Wiederkehr. Closing Prayer: Maker of the seasons, thank you for all that autumn teaches me. Change my focus so that I see not only what I am leaving behind, but also the harvest and plenitude that my life holds. May my heart grow free and my life more peaceful as I resonate with, and respond to, the many graces this season offers me. May God give us voice to proclaim God's love and goodness. May gratitude fill our hearts. May God bless and protect us all. Amen

Today’s readings from both Luke and Matthew's gospel speak of our ability to notice God in our midst. God is abundant, providing hints and revelations everywhere, but do we have senses to notice? If we can notice God in a Bethlehem baby, perhaps we can notice God in all things, and all things in God. Perhaps, if we train our senses to discover God’s presence, every cup of coffee will become, as Joyce Rupp suggests, “the cup of life.”

Dearest Fellow Seekers. Welcome to The Prayer Path. This week I've felt gently guided by the spirit, to bring you a prayer journey, inspired by a person who while only living a very short life of 24 years, has been canonised as a saint, has been made a doctor of the Roman Catholic Church, is recognised as one of a more modern generation of Christian mystics and has cultivated an enourmous devotion that crosses the boundaries of religious tradition. St. Therese of Lisieux, also affectionately known as ‘The Little Flower', in her practice of her ‘Little Way' opened her heart completely and courageously poured out unwaivering love on all with whom she came into contact however challenging. He simple way's of kindness, compassion and love, which she determined were how she became closer to God, are an inspiration to us all. In todays prayer journey, adapting some words by Joyce Rupp, I invite you to courageously ponder where your compassion and love reside and to pray that through open heartedness their virutues might be fortified within you. For the third time, we are interviewing the gentle and powerful poet and author, Joyce Rupp. She is well known for her work as a writer, a spiritual “midwife, and a retreat and conference speaker—having led retreats throughout North America and in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. She is a member of the Servites (the Servants of Mary) community and the author of several books, including The Cup of Our Life, Fragments of the Ancient Name and her latest, my soul feels lean: poems of loss and restoration—about which we will be interviewing her today. Poetry is such a powerful expression of the deepest urges of our beingness, and so it is that her poetry will lead us to a powerful discussion about how to work with loss. Don't miss this show.

Those are words taken from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, and are the title of Joyce Rupp's latest book, a book that draws on a rich variety of faith traditions to provide meditations on God's names for every day of the year. One of the hardest things for us to wrap our minds around seems to be this idea of a God of multiple names—a God who isn't God, but an unnamable Beingness. It is always so interesting to think that we've got God in a box when we encapsulate its character in a connotation that seems to fit us more than anything else. But here Rupp has given us a language for the name itself—if only in tiny fragments—that put us in touch with the deeper aspects of ourselves and that ultimate Beingness. With the open heart of a mystic we come to this show wanting more than that empty box someone else gave us many years ago. Don't miss this opportunity for deeper enlightenment.
