Introduction Q. Is healthcare a human right? A. No. Reasonable access to healthcare is a human right. Q. What about housing, food, clothing, employment and income, and so on? A. Same answer. That is the subject of today’s 10-minute blog/podcast. Continuing America is a unique and exceptional nation. Part of the equally unique and exceptional role we need to play in it is to understand the right and wrong--and the cost--of the political arguments swirling around us.. “Human right” vs. “Reasonable access” is at the very core of what we are talking about here. If these things are indeed human rights, then everyone, all 7.5 billion of us humans in the world would be entitled to them. And even the most extravagant spender of US taxpayer money would admit that we cannot afford to supply those benefits to all of those around the world who are not now receiving them. So I suppose the “human right” phrase is more virtue signalling than a real position. It looks like we are talking about those who manage to be here in the US, with or without documents, legally or illegally. Pause for a key definition: Illegal vs. Undocumented. If I am a qualified driver and am driving without my paperwork with me, I am undocumented. If I am not a qualified driver and am driving anyway, I am illegal. Being pulled over and asked for my paperwork does not have any effect on my status; it merely exposes it. The unalienable rights, granted to us by our creator, are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Healthcare is not an unalienable right, to be granted to everyone regardless of effort level on their part. Let’s suppose that certain political types get their way over time and things like healthcare, food, housing, etc. are made free after being declared to be human rights. Why would anyone work? What would the motivation be? Can anyone make the case that the people voting for more and more free things--including a universal basic income--would be in any way motivated to work? If people are voting for free things and they are getting them, there would be little motivation to do anything but vote for more free things. Separately, does anyone believe that the politicians supporting making more and more things free would in any way motivate their supporters to work for their money, rather than simpy vote for them for their money? Let’s hear from three justifiably famous and wise voices: “A democracy can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury.” -Alexis de Tocqueville “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end." -Alexander Hamilton “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” Benjamin Franklin This wisdom is as old as the world’s oldest democracy, America. Yes, America is the world’s oldest democracy. How much longer will we be able to make that claim? Returning specifically to healthcare, the goal should be to come up with a way to allow reasonable access to affordable, quality healthcare. Note the podcast title question is not, “Should everyone have access to healthcare?” The answer to that question is a loud and hearty “Yes. Absolutely!”. For those who feel that healthcare is a right, remember that in most cases people can live longer without healthcare than without food. And lack of housing and clothing can easily lead to health problems, as well as a poor quality lifestyle and an unsuccessful life overall. The “healthcare is a human right” argument can quickly lead to the conclusion that food, clothing and shelter are also rights. Okay, Will, what does “reasonable access” mean. Let’s start by returning to a chart I created and have referenced before, the Can’t vs. Won’t chart. There are two axes. The horizontal axis has Just Won’t on one side, and hard work over time but still Can’t on the other.

Nope, turns out it is all due to the diligent works of (27:10) Hyper Hype Girl (HHG) and the supporting role played by the Dirty Hippy, who it turns out does not stink, but Regina sure does! (30:00) Matty has a colonial-correction for ya’al, probably not the last time you get a correction from me…oh BTW, Matt confused Marcel Mauss with Claude Levi-Strauss on the Alison Smith Episode as well, I am sure you all picked up on this and have since sent in the hate mail. 2015 En Mai, fais ce qu'il te plaît French Proverb meaning “In May, do what pleases you”… Where I use the orphans on my hard drive. Claude Nougaro, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Grace Jones doing Edith Piaf, a Rolling Stones sampled cover, a twisted take of EBTG’s and lo and behold a 2015 remix of Neil Young/Nicolette Larson’s Lotta Love.. How is that for eclectic? Every year at about the time of my Taurean birthday, I try to put together a playlist of odd tunes, jams that never get a chance to make it to a set due to the filtering process I use. Either they are not quite five stars, do not fit into any strict genres or are jams I feel I may like but depart from a true house format. But it is that time of the year again and whilst I was on an extended trip to China and before embarking on a progressive house new journey, I propose you the 2015 version of “En Mai, fais ce qu'il te plaît”. It is eclectic, starting with a French flavour with the late Claude Nougaro, an old French jazz/rock artist, from my hometown of Toulouse, following is a little medley of Grace Jones using the current “Frenchie Thing” tune as a recall, before jumping into no less than Phil Collins and Eric Clapton.. All this with a definite House flavour. The set is different and might put off some listeners but once again remember: ”In May, do what pleases you”. Playlist: 2014 Nougayork (Dimitri from Paris Full Vocal Remix vs Night Dubbin’ in 2014). Claude Nougaro 2015 The Frenchie Thing [Xtian Paroles Edit]. Reboot 2012 La Vie en Rose (djGiel's la Vie Remix). Grace Jones 2014 Call Me Maybe (OtherSoul Remix). Carly Rae Jepsen 2012 I Cannot Believe It's True. (MikenandTess Booty Funk Edit). Phil Collins 2014 Hey, Hey (OtherSoul Illegal Remix). Dennis Ferrer 2012 Here Comes Every day (MikeandTess Mash up ). Steven Stone feat. Kim English 2012 It’s Like That (Original Mix). Professor X 2012 Miss You (Andy & Dave Club Mix). Disco Enemy feat. Danny Losito, The Rolling Stones 2009 Needin U (DJ Wady Ibiza Mix). Mark Brown, Adam Shaw, The Face 2008 Higher and Higher (2008 Club Mix). Milk & Sugar 2010 Just Won't Do (Pirupa & Pigi Remix). Analog People In A Digital World, Tim Deluxe, Sam Obernik, Pirupa, Pigi 2013 Cocaine (iLicris Remix). Eric Clapton 2015 Wrong (Jolyon Petch Club Mix). eSQUIRE & PETCH, Jolyon Petch, Esquire 2013 The Music Sounds Better With You (Carl Hanaghan Remix). Speedboats, Big Explosions 2015 Lotta Love (Alaia Gallo Remix) .Vintage Lounge Orchestra 2014 Let the Music Play (Neo funk Mix). Rob Hayes Private Collection Highlights: This set is different but I do not infer it is particularly good. I sometimes find it highly entertaining to listen to classics being “housified”… This being said, do not miss the Dimitri from Paris take on Claude Nougaro’s “Nougayork”! Claude Nougaro was a immensely talent French jazz/rock artist and poet from my hometown of Toulouse. I remember as a student seeing him getting wasted in bars on a daily basis. On day he went to NY and and bluffed the local studio talent royalty by sitting down in the recording room, jammin’ with them and within 30 days release the perfect album. It is a pity that most of you may not understand French because the lyrics are both an ode and a wink to America, from someone who theoretically would have had his musical roots there but was so far removed from the Yankee culture. Finally Claude Nougaro wrote the most beautiful song on his/my hometown “Toulouse”.. I am providing the link down-below. The lyrics are poetry of the highest order and I can’t hear this song without a massive homesick feeling.. Reboot’s Frenchie Thing.. As soon as I heard the track, I recognized the sample and knew that I would try to present alongside the original. It took me a while to find a remix of Grace Jones’ classic that would marry well. Found it on SoundCloud, impressive work. The original Grace Jones cover of Piaf “La Vie en Rose” will remain a house classic for times to come. Kudos to Reboot to have had a play with it. Phil Collins.. How lame as it may be, there are two or three Collins’ albums I love. The sound, the production, the funk, right or wrong I will it is analogue house music without the label… “Miss You”.. Had to have a Rolling Stones in there.. The remix is very allusive but the basic swagger of the original tune is there. “Needin’ U” and “Higher & Higher”: I went to see David Morales last month.. Loved it and thought I would re-listen to his classics.. Immense artist and great DJ. I felt he was sticking a bit too much to one format ( 1 Studio 54 track, 1 soulful, 1 semi-tech, 1 sexy and back to Studio 54 to close the loop). It worked perfectly at the start but got a bit tedious. But it was perfectly executed. I think what through me out was when he dropped the second Gloria Gaynor in one hour. “Just Won’t Do”, a remix Tim Deluxe classic, which will take the old clubbers who follow back a decade at least.. Clapton’s “Cocaine”… A friend of mine Lisa, at every party I play, once she is fired up has always the same request “Christian, please drop Cocaine”. Be it in the middle of a soulful set, trance, the request is always there.. Well, Lisa I have now not one but two usable remix of Cocaine, which I will gladly drop in order for you to toe that narrow line.. The eSQUIRE & PETCH remix of EBTG’s “Wrong”.. I love EBTG and hearing a new jackin’ remix of “Wrong” was a treat I could not pass. “Lotta Love”.. I remember my brother playing the original from Neil Young and Nicolette Larson.. Had to put that one in. Realizing at this stage that I could have put a Beatles tu8ne to close the loop… Well it will have to come next year, for the next session of “En Mai, fais ce qu'il te plaît”. Just about to embark in a long progressive series.. I will see you on the other side. Already mixed a couple, therefore the wait will not be too long. Hope you enjoy this one. Soory I could not fit it into a CD length format by I was O/S and/or on a plane whilst mixing it.. A bientôt Xtian
