Another fun Question and Answer with Karrie, Cathy, and Shara. In today's episode, they answer the question about seeking healing and restoration in relationships with parents who deny past trauma. The hosts emphasize the importance of doing the inner work before engaging in conversations with parents, as well as the possibility of healing without their acknowledgment. They also highlight the need for time, outside perspective, and setting boundaries in order to navigate these complex dynamics. In this part of the conversation, Cathy and Karrie discuss the importance of understanding and accepting the limitations of relationships, especially with parents. They emphasize the need to grieve the reality of what could have been and to release expectations of redemption. They also explore the process of working with clients who have multiple layers of shame and how to decide where to start. They highlight the significance of following the thread of a story and the themes that emerge. They conclude by encouraging listeners to take small steps towards their redeemed selves through honesty and self-reflection. Takeaways Healing and restoration in relationships with parents who deny past trauma may not always be possible, and it's important to prioritize one's own healing regardless of their response. Engaging in conversations with parents about past trauma should be approached with caution and only after doing the necessary inner work. Setting boundaries and taking time for oneself can be crucial in navigating complex family dynamics. Seeking outside perspective from a trusted source can provide valuable insights and guidance in dealing with challenging family relationships. Understand and accept the limitations of relationships, especially with parents, and grieve the reality of what could have been. Release expectations of redemption and focus on personal healing and growth. When working with clients with multiple layers of shame, start with the story that feels the most available and follow the thread to uncover themes. Honesty and self-reflection are key to personal healing and growth. Take small steps towards your redeemed self by being more honest and creating spaces for honesty. Understanding the underlying issues that lead to addictive behaviors is crucial for healing and finding healthier coping mechanisms. Setting boundaries and limitations can be an act of self-care and self-compassion in navigating addiction. Societal acceptance of certain addictions, such as alcohol and sugar, can make it challenging to recognize and address unhealthy patterns. Self-awareness and reflection are key in identifying and addressing addictive behaviors. In her latest book, Free and Fully Alive: Reclaiming the Story of Who You Were Created to Be, popular faith-leader, speaker, and certified life coach Karrie Garcia shares something most Christians can identify: “I was taught that God wants us to live freely, but I never understood what that kind of freedom meant or felt like. It seemed like a good idea in theory, but elusive—I had no idea how to grab hold of it.” In Free and Fully Alive, Karrie draws on her own experiences and expertise to create a dynamic, practical guide for readers to learn how to embrace their past and discover a deeper connection to themselves, God, and others. What is the difference between being free versus being free AND fully alive? What's the first step someone needs to take to embrace his/her story – and why is it so crucial? How does understanding trauma help us understand sin and brokenness? Why do we need to lament our places of wounding? Though it's difficult—as you note—why is it necessary to talk about the Enemy? How does he use isolation, doubt, and chaos to trap us? How can you determine if you're caught in a “cycle of false freedom”? What's the harm in these often benign behaviors? Have you ever truly engaged your story and looked at how God is inviting you into a deeper place of healing and redemption? How do you even begin to unpack all that you've been through and find safe people to share your story with? Author, pastor and coach Karrie Garcia has made it her life's mission to not only engage her own story, but to help others do the same. After overcoming the grips of addiction, walking through a divorce and finding herself in an unhealthy relationship with ministry, Karrie began to break free from the chains of pain and shame that kept her bound. With the help of the Holy Spirit, Karrie began to see the lies and agreements she had accepted from the enemy and others. Learning to allow the Lord to tend to the place of her woundings has given Karrie the freedom to help others name and invite God into their pain. Through her Freedom Academy intensives, online course and new book, Free and Fully Alive: Reclaiming the Story of Who You Were Created to Be, Karrie is determined to help others engage in the pain of their past so they can life free and fully alive in the present. In this encouraging conversation, Davey sits with Karrie to talk about the importance of looking at our story and trauma, how naming truth truly sets us free, and the ways in which shame can keep us bound until we acknowledge our core woundings. Your past may be full of trauma and heartache, but God wants to invite you into freedom and being fully alive after whatever you've experienced if you are willing to just step into your story and more importantly, His.   Website: https://www.karriegarcia.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karriescottgarcia/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/karrie.s.garcia Book: Free and Fully Alive: Reclaiming the Story of Who You Were Created to Be https://a.co/d/2JU2D6R Want to be a part of giving HOPE to the many and healing to the one? We believe Jesus meant it when He said that He came to give us a full and beyond our expectations life. Yet, that isn't always our lived experience. My guest this week is Karrie Garcia. As a pastor, life coach, author and CEO, Karrie inspires change in others by boldly sharing her journey to freedom. With more than 10,000 hours of experience under her belt, Karrie has been speaking formally since the age of 19. Her audiences range from church small groups to crowds of thousands. Karrie's authentic, raw, and fearless approach to addressing challenging, and sometimes uncomfortable, topics makes those who hear from her feel known, loved, and accepted. She started the nonprofit Freedom Movement in 2014 with the understanding that every single one of us is broken and has wounds, many of which are not often addressed within traditional church environments. Karrie's new book, Free & Fully Alive: Reclaiming the Story of Who You Were Created to Be, is available now. 10:22 – Karrie 101 Besides being a wife and a mom of three kids, Karrie trains people to heal through their trauma. Karrie wanted to know God deeply, but she didn't know how to deal with the harm and heartache she experienced at home. 21:36 – Struggling through addiction Karrie has been sober 21 years, but she still struggles with drug addiction. She got off drugs because she was going to die. No one is doing drugs just because they want to. Something deeper is going on. 34:26 – What has helped her heal? Her entire book is about healing and connection to self, God and others. Pause the things you're doing today and look at who you were when you were younger. What role did you have to play in your family? Write down one, two or three stories about how you played that role. How did you protect yourself? 44:56 – Broken and in need People often come to Christianity broken and in need, and they think they're supposed to have their life more together than they do. But that is a lie. Jesus asks us not to be scared. Trust in Him. 52:20 – Honesty People often put on masks and don't have real, honest conversations with people. Connect to yourself first. Be honest with yourself first and then be honest with God. FEATURED QUOTES I wanted to know God deeply, and yet I didn't know how to encounter or faceoff or even really embrace the stories of harm and heartache that were in my home. I've been sober 21 years. However, I still struggle with addiction. I got off drugs because I was going to die. I take very complex things and simplify them. We must see the story before we see the sin. You're on drugs? OK, what's the story? https://www.wearefm.org/ https://www.amazon.com/Free-Fully-Alive-Reclaiming-Created/dp/0310366445

We long to be deeply known...and we all have felt the risk of this. But what is the greater risk? Allowing ourselves to be fully known in community OR to be subject to the enemy's ploy in isolation? Through life, we begin to gather data from experiences that can validate the enemy's lie that it is dangerous for us to reveal who we are to others and if we do "will I still be loved?". The good news, is that we can reframe this! This episode is for everyone, as we all have felt the heartache of being known before... and then rejected, yet all share a deep groaning to be loved as who God created us to be. As a pastor, life coach, author and CEO, Karrie Garcia inspires change in others by boldly sharing her journey to freedom. Karrie has navigated dark places—including drug addiction, the suicide of her mother, and the breakdown of her first marriage—and emerged victorious through the freedom she found in the grace, mercy, and healing that can only come from Jesus Christ. At the point Karrie felt most disqualified from ministry and life itself, Scripture finally came alive for her to reveal God's purpose and plan. This is the truth that continues to transform her life, and now Karrie is on a mission to redefine freedom for others. It was from this conviction that Freedom Movement was born. Karrie started the nonprofit in 2014 with the understanding that every single one of us is broken and has wounds, many of which are not often addressed within traditional church environments. She saw firsthand that God's true redemptive purpose for our lives does not begin once we're free from pain, rather it stems directly out of that pain. A licensed life coach through the International Coach Federation (ICF), Karrie is a natural at creating space for others and has been been involved in coaching and counseling, whether professionally or informally, for nearly 25 years. Through Freedom Movement and its programming, Karrie has fostered an environment where anyone can begin to process and heal, whether they're taking their first or their last step on the road to freedom. Today, the organization has partnered with major churches in addition to Christian universities and conferences to offer this same healing space on a larger scale. This podcast episode is brought to you by UHSM Health Share, a unique health care membership on a mission to create holistic wellness for the mind, body and spirit. There is no story too broken for Jesus to redeem. When all our formulas break down, there is a Savior who never does. Karrie's story is no different. Karrie grew up in the church. She knew all the formulas she needed to do in order to earn God's love. But as she got older, she realized that all the formulas and striving still didn't satisfy the deep longing for hope in her heart. During our conversation, we learn about Karrie's journey to hope and are reminded of how easy it can be for us to stop seeking our true source of endless peace: God. It was a beautiful dialogue, and I hope it will help you learn some tools on how to seek God to help you be fulfilled. Karrie is a pastor, life coach, author, and podcaster. “There is no one on this planet that has arrived.” Karrie Scott Garcia is with us today as we dig into what it means to live an abundant life. We all struggle with our humanity but through it all we have a God who walks alongside us.We can all rest in the fact that no one truly has it all together. Karrie Garcia is the Founder and Executive Director of Freedom Movement, a ministry that seeks to bring hope to men and women by offering tools to help them walk in freedom. She has put together “The Exchange,” a nine-week video course with reflection questions to guide people through the process of exchanging believed lies for God’s freedom. As Karrie puts it, an abundant life is a full life. It is not a life without grief, sorrow, and pain. But rather it is both hurt and hope simultaneously. As we grow, we struggle with questions like: How do I know what I am supposed to do? Where is the root of this issue? What is keeping me from living for Jesus? When we wrestle with these questions and our humanity, we are not bypassing pain but engaging it with the power of the Holy Spirit. Through the wrestling we come to know God’s heart and will. For more information about Karrie Garcia, Freedom Movement, or the Exchange Course, please visit:https://freedom-movement-shop.myshopify.com/products/the-exchange-coursehttps://www.wearefreedommovement.org/https://www.karriegarcia.com/Insta: @karriescottgarciaFacebook: Karrie Scott GarciaPodcast by Karrie Garcia and Shara Haus: The Honest Pod

Karrie Garcia preaches on the apostle Paul’s strength in the midst of his hardship as illustrated in Philippians Chapter 4. Paul wrote this letter to the church of Philippi while imprisoned in Rome. We all know what incredible pain Paul had to endure for the sake of Jesus Christ. Having lived through labors, beatings, sleeplessness, and hunger, Paul writes that he has “learned” to be content in whatever situation (v. 11). Then in verse 13, he writes the frequently-quoted verse, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” The verse is often taken out of context and used in situations when we need the strength to do something we may not be entirely confident about. However, Paul is saying that he is strong to face all things because of Christ who empowers him. He is confessing that nothing fills his heart like Jesus, and contentment will be found in Christ alone. Whenever we face hardship, it is easy for us to get frustrated or angry with God. But we should be reminded that our hope lies in the future we have in Christ, not in living a perfect life on earth. Understanding this truth, or secret, will help us not be anxious but give thanks to God even in the midst of suffering. Would love to see your comments and thoughts below! This week we also announced the launch of the VOX Community Teaching Team! Karrie Garcia reminded us of the awesome responsibility we have as Jesus followers. As background, she recalled Matthew 22, where Jesus was portrayed as having a growing anger at the religious “elite” at the time, who were manipulating God’s word to place themselves above others. Jesus detested this misuse of scripture and advocated for a different expression of faith. That context plays directly into Matthew 25:14-28, the parable of the talents, which is about a rich master who entrusted his servants with varying amounts of money (based on their ability). Two servants doubled their allotment, but one was fearful of his master’s demanding nature and buried his money to keep it safe. The first two entered into the joy of the master, while the third earned the master’s wrath. All of this is apt for the Vox Community, as we too see deficiencies in various expressions of church and desire to do it differently. And just like the servants in the parable, we all have been entrusted with varying gifts and we are to work to double them—not bury them—as we work together to follow Jesus. Storytelling by Scott McMichael Scott shared his story of serving God in the midst of despair. As he entered adulthood, he found himself struggling with depression, anxiety, and OCD. This emotional state, however, enabled him to truly lament the plight of many migrants in the Middle East, convicting him to serve those who are fleeing injustice. Scott will be going abroad soon in order to be a missionary to these vulnerable people. His story is inspiring because his hope is not that God just heals him, but rather that God will use the redeemed version of his depressed self to serve others. Karrie Garcia shared her journey of learning to exchange fear for love through her story. Karrie was the oldest in a pastor’s family where secrets and hiding were the norm. Her mother, struggling with mental health issues, was unable to provide Karrie with emotional nurturing which resulted in Karrie developing a fear of being invisible. “I was the opposite of fearful,” Karrie explains. “I knew how to be tough. The one thing that has kept me back from who I was supposed to be was that I had a need to be seen.” Struggling with drug addiction, living under a bridge, Karrie reached out to her father who responded, “I love you and I will never let you fall again.” Out of drugs into marriage and Christian service, Karrie realized that she was continuing to walk in fear of punishment which caused her to feel that God could not save her. Karrie spiraled downward into an affair, lost her marriage, ministry and found herself at a place of suicide. Making a decision to live, she sought help and began to look at exchanging her fear for love. Quoting Isiah 41:10, Karrie explained that, “God surely wants to help you, He wants to hold you up in his right hand.” Hear Karrie share her whole story on the VOX Podcast with Mike Erre: https://soundcloud.com/thevoxpodcast/ep-66-women-in-leadership-guest-karrie-garcia-of-the-freedom-movement Learn more about Freedom Movement: www.thefreedommovement.us Story by Valerie Valerie shares about her journey wrestling through the idea of Christian performance, amidst becoming pregnant before married, experiencing post-pardom depression, and more.
