Ken Sundet Jones, Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, loves teaching undergrads. He was born in Heidelberg, which must be why he likes Luther so much. He was shaped by the Sturgis motorcycle rally in his hometown and by summers at his grandparents' cattle ranch. His doctoral dissertation covered 16th-century German evangelical funeral preaching. And he knows how to do knitting and Scandinavian flat-plane woodcarving.
Ben comes on the show to talk about preparations for the two races, which occur on April 19 and April 22. Ben also talks about what goes into months of preparation for these races and the promising future for both events. He also tells the story of how he met his wife, Ariana, and hobbies he likes to do when he's coordinating these races.
In this episode, Kelsi chats with theologian Mark Mattes about his new release with 1517 Publishing, Ditching the Checklist: Assurance of Salvation for Evangelicals (and Other Sinners). The two discuss the history and inner-workings of “Decision Theology” and why this theology ultimately leads people to the question, “Am I really saved?” without a helpful or true answer. In response, Mark suggests Scripture primarily presents salvation and faith in Christ as something passive (like birth) done to us. As a result, instead of looking to our works as a means of assurance, Christians can look with certainty to God's sacramental promises and efficacious word. Mark Mattes serves as Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, and previously served parishes in Gardner, Illinois, and Antigo, Wisconsin. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and an M.Div from Luther Seminary. Mattes has authored Martin Luther's Theology of Beauty: A Reappraisal and The Role of Justification in Contemporary Theology, and has co-authored Imaging the Journey, co-translated Theology the Lutheran Way by Oswald Bayer, co-edited the collected papers of Gerhard Forde, A More Radical Gospel and The Preached God, and is an Associate Editor for Lutheran Quarterly.Show Notes:Support 15171517 PodcastsThe 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts1517 on YoutubeMore from Kelsi: Kelsi Klembara Follow Kelsi on Instagram Follow Kelsi on Twitter Kelsi's Newsletter Subscribe to the Show: Apple Podcasts Spotify Youtube

MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kelsey Kramer McGinnis on Instagram & Christianity Today Kelsey Kramer McGinnis, contributing author to Christianity Today and Professor at Grand View University, joins Melvin in discussing a classic film adaption in early feminist literature, The Stepford Wives! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 38-minutes discussing Kelsey McGinnis' article on Christianity Today titled "Big, Big Market: Why CCM Filled '80s and '90s Homes", where CCM developed during the '00s and the '10s, the transition in popularity from CCM to Worship music, and the impact of how we engage music in the modern day through streaming and algorithmic curation. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Kelsey McGinnis shares about her upcoming book with Marissa Burt on the history of Christian parenting, and some of its crossover with the modern TRAD-wife movement. The Stepford Wives is almost entirely mumblecore in its presentation. Apart from that one big thing, it feels like a simple, evenly-paced film about nothing.Nearly 50 years later... is The Stepford Wives still a good representation of feminist cinema? The two open up their spoiler-filled discussion early (for a 50-year-old film) so they can get into more interesting weeds of discussion.So... is The Stepford Wives a horror movie? Yes, but likely only for some. For 1975, Melvin isn't aware he's seen or read any stories that tackle systematic issues with such complex clarity. He's largely observed that in more modern material. The Stepford Wives is stupendously blunt. Is that useful?Tradwives are like a modern stepford wife, but what else defines them? You've been asking for this film ever since I announced there would be a Historians At The Movies Podcast. Today we jump in head first to the Director's Cut of Ridley Scott's 2005 epic, Kingdom of Heaven. This is a beautiful and seriously flawed film, but it is fun to watch. I decided that a film this big needed an army of historians, so I invited back HATM Podcast alums David Perry, Matthew Gabriele, John Wyatt Greenlee to talk all things Crusades. We talk about the film's strengths and its flaws, and dive deep to discuss things that matter, such as how to see this film as a response to 9/11 and exactly how many orcas would it take to fight Liam Neeson.About our guests:Matthew Gabriele is a professor of medieval studies and the chair of the Department of Religion and Culture at Virginia Tech. His research and teaching generally explore religion, violence, nostalgia, and apocalypse, whether manifested in the Middle Ages or the modern world. This includes events and ideas such as the Crusades, the so-called “Terrors of the Year 1000,” and medieval religious and political life. He has also presented and published on modern medievalism, such as recent white supremacist appropriations of the Middle Ages and pop culture phenomena like Game of Thrones and the video game Dragon Age. His book, co-authored with David M. Perry, is out now: The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe (Harper Books, 2021). His new book will also be with David M. Perry and is entitled Oathbreakers: The Carolingian Civil War and the Collapse of an Empire in the Middle Ages (Harper Books, 2024).David M. Perry is a journalist and historian. He is the co-author of The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe, out now from Harper Collins. The Boston Globe called it “incandescent and ultimately intoxicating.” Perry was a professor of Medieval History at Dominican University from 2006-2017. His scholarly work focuses on Venice, the Crusades, and the Mediterranean World. He's the author of Sacred Plunder: Venice and the Aftermath of the Fourth Crusade (Penn State University Press, 2015). Now he works for the University of Minnesota, convincing students that studying history is good for them and good for their careers (it is!).John Wyatt Greenlee is a life-long map enthusiast. I love how maps can make fantasy worlds come alive, and how they can give context to histories. He holds a PhD in medieval history, with a focus on the history of maps and map making. He has written articles on cartographic analysis, setting maps within their historical and cultural contexts. He has built multiple digital projects annotating medieval map. In addition to maps, he spends time working on his other major academic interest: the role of eels in human history. He is The Surprised Eel Historian on Twitter — perhaps the world's only eel historian!Thomas Lecaque is an Associate Professor of History at Grand View University. This Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Thursday, June 1.Once again there's a chance for rain in the forecast, but we'll see if it actually arrives. According to the National Weather Service it will become increasingly cloudy during the day in the Cedar Rapids area, with a high near 89 degrees. There will be somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of a chance for showers and thunderstorms between 3 and 9 p.m. Thursday night, it is predicted to be partly cloudy, with a low of around 66 degrees. You might not have to hear about the debt ceiling on the news for a while, assuming this passes in the Senate.According to reporting from the Associated Press, the House approved a debt ceiling and budget cuts package late Wednesday, as President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy assembled enough Democrats and Republicans to pass the bill, while more conservative and liberal members of both parties still voted no in protest for various reasons. The hard-fought deal pleased few, but lawmakers assessed it was better than the alternative — a devastating economic upheaval if Congress failed to act. Tensions ran high throughout the day as hard-right Republicans refused the deal, while Democrats said “extremist” GOP views were risking a debt default as soon as next week. The package makes some inroads in curbing the nation's debt as Republicans demanded, without rolling back Trump-era tax breaks as Biden wanted. To pass it, Biden and McCarthy counted on support from the political center, a rarity these days in Washington. With an overwhelming House vote, 314-117, the bill now heads to the Senate with passage expected by the end of the week.In his first visit to Iowa as a declared presidential candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis repeatedly framed Iowa and Florida as partners in a Republican battle to “restore sanity.”To DeSantis, that includes laws prohibiting instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools, banning gender-affirming care for minors, and making abortions illegal after six weeks of pregnancy.“Iowa has really set a great standard,” DeSantis told a crowd of about 500 people gathered Wednesday at Hawkeye Downs Speedway & Expo Center.“People have said that all of the success in Iowa with these great conservative policies makes Iowa the Florida of the North. I don't know … maybe we're the Iowa of the South,” he said to loud applause. He vowed to send Biden “back to his basement,” and said the nation is “careening toward bankruptcy” in the wake of Biden's debt ceiling deal with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.Meanwhile, former Vice President Mike Pence will launch his presidential campaign during a Des Moines rally on June 7, a source familiar with Pence's plans confirmed. The former vice president has made frequent visits to Iowa as he explored a bid for president. He will join several other presidential contenders at Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst's annual Roast and Ride fundraiser on Saturday, days before the planned campaign launch. He plans to campaign in all 99 counties, according to multiple reports. CNN will host a town hall with Pence at Grand View University at 8 p.m. June 7, the same day his campaign is set to launch.Pence has made education, LGBTQ issues and civility in politics a focus of his early campaigning, taking particular aim at a gender support policy the Linn-Mar school district adopted last year.
For our 25th episode, we have only one question: IS THERE A CAVE?This week we are joined by two scholars ready to get medieval on us all: Thomas Lecaque and John Wyatt Greenlee. Joshua Holland kicks off this week's show with a deeper dive into the Democrats' remarkably strong showing in the 2022 midterms in down-ballot races, and a look at some new evidence for keeping those masks on in indoor spaces. Then we're joined by Grand View University historian Thomas Lecaque to talk about the alarming significance of the right doubling down on their anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry after their rhetoric led to the deadly massacre of five in a gay bar in Colorado Springs rather than deflecting blame as they usually do in similar circumstances.

Christopher Lee is Vice President for Administration and Finance at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. In this episode, Lee joins our host Donna Schiele to talk about learning to prioritize without panic, optimizing your choices, and being a CBO in a faith-based institution. “We are here as professionals not to panic but to simply anticipate as much as we can, prepare for the fact that big things will always come at us, have plans in place for things we can prepare for, and then as those things come, assess, evaluate, prioritize, and then execute in the best interest of our institutions and our students,” he says. He relates his thinking to Douglas Adams' classic quote “Don't panic” from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. “Many people lose sight of that mission and purpose. We need to always keep in mind if we're operating in that best interest. That's one of the ways we keep ourselves sustainable.” He goes on to talk about the CBO's role of stewardship for the organizations. Join us for a conversation with Lee as he talks about maintaining and sustaining mission post-Covid, balancing the sustainability of resources, and changes that come with new leadership.

This week's Moonlighter goes way back with Moonlight Tim. Eric Stein was a sophomore leader for the Iowa Central Tritons when Tim joined the team as a freshman. Even as a 19-year-old, Eric Stein's baseball IQ made it clear that his future was in coaching if he wanted it. Roughly 18 years after that first meeting, Tim sits down with Eric to talk about Stein's progression from player to head coach for those same Tritons. Eric Stein grew up on a farm outside Portsmouth, Iowa, and attended Harlan Community High School. After a successful high school baseball career, Stein moved to the big city of Fort Dodge to play for Iowa Central during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. After considerable success as an infielder, including recognition for his defensive skills, Stein played for Grand View University. When his playing days were over, he took a call from Rick Pedersen to come back as an assistant coach. Stein took over as a head coach in the 2018-2019 season and has had consistent success over the last few years, racking up 75 wins so far. Tim and Eric both have a passion for Iowa Central and junior college baseball. This interview focuses on the world of JUCO baseball from the players' and coaches' perspectives. They cover everything from recruiting kids to a 2-year school to the impact of Eric Sim. Tim takes Eric through his eight beliefs about success in junior college baseball. These nuggets of wisdom are explained from both the veteran player angle and the current skipper. Tim's list ranges from staying out of trouble to ensuring your attitude and work ethic keep you on the path to success. Stein has to recruit young men to Fort Dodge to help his program take the next step by moving on to 4-year schools when their time in JUCO is done. His success so far shows that he knows what it takes to win at the junior college level, but maybe Tim's list could be the Moonlight bump to help Stein and the Tritons bring home that world series ring.
In his recent article at Religion Dispatches, historian Thomas Lecaque writes: In the wake of every mass shooting in this country, we have a brief moment where we talk about the guns used and the need for gun control. And then rapidly, the gun lobby, conservative politicians, Second Amendment absolutists, and the rest find every conceivable other possible thing to focus on, starting with “thoughts and prayers” and moving on to hardening school buildings. The mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where the shooter used an AR-15-style weapon he'd purchased from the gun company Daniel Defense, has followed the same pattern—but with a recognition that the love of the AR-15 style weapon isn't just about “freedom” or Second Amendment absolutism. It's also about Christian Nationalism. https://religiondispatches.org/christian-nationalists-and-the-holy-gun-crusade/ He speaks with Brad about this moment in our nation's history and what it means. In this third episode of our End of Sport Panels series, Johanna and Derek sit down with Amanda Mull, Steven Salaita, and Kevin Gannon to explore how some of our favorite anti-racist/anti-capitalist critics, folks whose focus in their work is not on sport, come to engage with sport and experience fandom. The conversation explores what the panelists get out of their engagements with racial capitalist sport and how their experiences with and through sport inform their politics. Amanda Mull is a three-time guest on the show and staff writer at The Atlantic. Steven Salaita is a former Associate Professor at Virginia Tech and should-have-been professor at the University of Illinois, before having his position revoked in an actual instance of ‘cancel culture,' for principled comments about Israeli apartheid. He is the author of eight books, including 2015's Uncivil Rites: Palestine and the Limits of Academic Freedom. Kevin Gannon is Professor of History at Grandview University and author of the recent book Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto. For a transcription of this episode, please click here. In this week's podcast episode, Emily chats with Regan Doely, owner of Doe a Deer, a product-based business offering kitchen decor and home goods. Regan shares more about her leap from freelance to products, how she's driven growth and what her expansion to a storefront has looked like.Reagan graduated from Grand View University with a graphic design degree and spent her first few years working in corporate graphic design departments. Feeling the itch to flex her creative muscles beyond strict brand guidelines, she started her side hustle, Doe a Deer. What started as a primarily freelance business designing logos and brands for other entrepreneurs quickly became part product-based as Regan began selling her stationery designs. A love for vintage kitchen decor like flour sack towels pushed Regan to begin experimenting with designing her own and eventually landed her at craft shows, selling her stationery, towels, and greeting cards. At first her freelance clients gave Regan the cash flow to be able to invest in buying stock of her products but over time she continued to grow the product side so that less and less clients were needed. Today her primary focus is on the products. Regan walks listeners through her experience growing her business and the steps she's taken to drive that growth, especially her approach to wholesale. She breaks down some of the wholesale markets she's tried and which ones are her favorite. Regan also shares her experience sourcing the perfect building and getting ready to launch her own storefront in Stuart, Iowa. She offers her advice for any new or aspiring product based business owners ready to launch their idea into life. Times, they are a'changing in the Central Iowa soccer scene. As you know, the Grand View University job is open after the legendary Blair Reid has retired, but also, the head coaching position at Drake University will see a change as well after Gareth Smith stepped down from the post. Interim boss, Kyle Smith, was kind enough to spend some time talking about his soccer journey as a player and now as a coach, plus provide a little insight into the team's past couple of seasons and a peek into the future of the program. It's a great chat, so enjoy!
As we've come into the new year, changes abound in the Iowa soccer community. In particular, a true legend has retired from the head coaching position at NAIA powerhouse, Grand View University. If there were a godfather of Iowa soccer, Blair Reid would undoubtedly be a part of the conversation. We had an opportunity to sit down with Blair and reminisce about his career and have a great laugh. A character on and off the field, Coach Reid's impact on the game is indisputable, so please, enjoy this episode.
The weatherman has been picking the best fall soccer games for the KIF Crew to attend. This past week, we went out to Cownie Soccer Complex to see the Battle of the Vikings between Grand View University and NAIA's eighth-ranked Missouri Valley College. The beautiful weather was not to upstage the beautiful game, however. Instead, we were treated to a back-and-forth affair that had plenty of action for the neutral. A strong presence of Iowa natives bolstered the Grand View squad and they showed themselves well all evening. After a busy second half of chances, Missouri Valley struck back after Grand View took the lead to force a little free soccer! Enjoy the recap!
