Triple M Footy's Kate McCarthy calls in to discuss Mitch Brown becoming the first openly bisexual AFL player - what it means for the queer community, and why the AFLW is light years ahead of the AFL in this space. Jack and Bryce battle it out in a very chaotic Hump Day Quiz, and Supercars legend Mark Winterbottom is in studio to talk about his new book and the Supercars Grand Final happening in Adelaide later this year. Billy has a new showbiz segment, JB had a nightmare day at the shops, and Fremantle's Patrick Voss calls in as he gears up for his first finals series. Former AFL Player Comes Out As Bisexual, Sparking An Important Conversation After years of homophobic language in AFL, former West Coast Eagles player Mitch Brown has bravely come out as bisexual. His courageous act is the catalyst for an open discussion about sexuality and inclusivity in professional sports. Brown's revelation comes on the heels of the recent homophobic slur controversy involving Adelaide's Izak Rankine. In a podcast interview, Brown describes a toxic culture of homophobia in AFL locker rooms. He recounts an appalling incident where players said they'd "rather be in a cage full of lions than shower next to a gay man." However, Brown says he feels privileged to live in a time where he can be open about his sexuality. He hopes his story will empower others in the LGBTQ+ community. This historic moment is long overdue in AFL's 129-year history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In nearly 130 years of Australian Rules no male player has revealed they're bi-sexual, until now. Former West Coast player Mitch Brown has opened up about his sexuality at a time where the sport has been grappling with multiple cases of homophobic slurs, headlined by last week's Izak Rankine saga. It's a powerful moment for the LGBTQIA+ community inside and outside the sport and has the capacity to make huge positive change.
