Cool, fun, and a sea-change in World War II movies as they entered a new decade, 1970's "Kelly's Heroes" reflects the era's anti-establishment zeitgeist. Clint Eastwood leads an ensemble cast as he and his men race to pull off the biggest gold heist in history, contending with not only Germans behind enemy lines, but their own side's clueless/corrupt higher-ups, and even another unit who wants in on it. Analyze KH on a deep level, or just relax and enjoy Oddball's one-liners; either way works... Asides include monkey movies, Richard Nixon, pop songs in movies, and James Bond in Harlem.

Buried Cinema is nine years old. Usually we celebrate a milestone by reviewing some classic or tentpole of cinema. This year, we're going a slightly different route. We are reviewing classics, but each one of us picked a "classic" we hate. We begin with a delightful musical that musical fan Nate hates, 1954's WHITE CHRISTMAS. Next we discuss Brian's choice, one of the most egregious Best Picture Academy Award-winners ever, 1956's AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (segment begins at 19:15). Next up is another Best Picture winner, and a deserving one, unless you ask Kevin, who hates 1965's THE SOUND OF MUSIC (begins at 41:01). Tom picked a "fun" war movie that nobody else even knew of, 1970 Clint Eastwood vehicle KELLY'S HEROES (1:01:45). Last of our despised classics is self-professed "sci-fi guy" Steve's pick of 1982 (or 2007, depending on how you judge these things) tech-noir standard BLADE RUNNER (1:19:28). Finally we look forward to a couple of animated movies that are NOT Disney... we think. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/buried-cinema/support

This time, we're taking on another counterculture icon! Tonight we take on a Canadian actor and former radio newsman hailing from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in his younger days. As such, it's probably no surprise he hails mainly from Scotch stock (with a bit of German in there for good measure)... He double majored in, of all things, engineering and drama, quickly dropping all the dry bourgeoise practicalities of applied math to pursue acting across Western Europe, doing a lot of work in cult British television and horror films before finding a niche as a rebellious hippie outsider type in several celebrated war films of the late 60's and early 70's - the Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, the Eagle Has Landed...and he introduced the pivotal role of Hawkeye in the original film version of M.A.S.H., later to make Alan Alda quite possibly the biggest star of the 70's and oft referenced sine qua non of the sensitive post feminist "New Man" of the decade. Front and center in a number of important films throughout the 70's - Klute, Don't Look Now, Eye of the Needle, work with Fellini and Bertolucci, even Animal House - he'd close the decade with an even more paranoid and effective update of the 50's sci fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, before falling into a long run of workaday films that kept the bills paid but offer little of interest to the cult film aficionado. well...there IS Buffy the Vampire Slayer to contend with, and the tween Sci-Fi bowlderization of Battle Royale, The Hunger Games. Hell, he even wound up in a Kate Bush video! So join us as we talk one of the true icons of 60's and 70's cinema and Canada's finest, the one and only Donald Sutherland! They start the show by reading comments from instagram about Triple Frontier and Three Kings. Then the read an iTunes review that they got from Talking Poop Podcast. The Garage Hour goons managed to check off one of the to-dos on their list with a broadcast from the brewhouse at Helix Brewing, a charming new brewery that just opened for business in La Mesa, CA, just down the street from the Garage Hour compound in Fletcher Hills.  This is the definition of craft brewer - making fun, tasty beers that you can enjoy in a small, cloistered setting. While chatting with owner/operator/engineer/bottle washer Cameron Ball, Hostus Maximus Justin Fort and cohosts .45 Phil and Chef Jeff really dug into the new ales offered by Cameron and company, as well as little bit of the thinking behind starting and running a new brewery in the Bureaucratic State of Kalifornistan. It's the Garage Hour, though, so don't worry: this episode also has AR-15s (and Cameron's plans to brew a beer inspired by the AR), tow trucks and towed 5.0s, off-roading, running trails versus running trails, good soundtracks and bad movies, .45 Phil's VW bus, and why Uber is up to something. There's an MP3 version of this podcast available on this micropage - just check the sound file for the same show with an "MP3" label.
