In this episode of Fishing Without Bait, host and behavioral therapist Jim Ellermeyer is joined by producer Mike Sorg for a heartfelt conversation about genealogy, family legacy, and the values we inherit—or choose to build ourselves. Jim reflects on his roots in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, sharing powerful stories from his family's history of generosity, resilience, and recovery—including their struggles with alcoholism and mental health. The discussion explores how understanding our lineage can illuminate inherited strengths and vulnerabilities, while also offering insight into medical and behavioral patterns like addiction or suicide risk. Jim and Mike dive into the evolving meaning of “family,” contrasting inherited blood ties with chosen families and how modern mental health awareness empowers people to create new traditions and break generational cycles. Listeners are invited to reflect on their own moral compass, heritage, and the importance of doing the next right thing—even when it's hard. This episode is a compassionate guide to creating a life of integrity, mindfulness, and purpose.

We're back again with another artist who fronts a ferociously aggressive thrash metal/hardcore band but has dogs that don't fall in line with the band's brand of expression. This time around it's Rick Jimenez of the band Extinction A.D. who introduces us to his two Cairn terriers Paco (4 years) and Griffin (8 years). Extinction A.D.'s new album To The Detested was released this past August 16th on Unique Leader Records. Catch them live at The Vault in New Bedford, MA on November 30th. Rick is shouting out two great organizations. First is the Setauket Animal Hospital, a full-service hospital offering a full range of comprehensive veterinary services to keep pets in excellent health, from wellness exams and vaccinations to dental care, internal medicine, and surgery. For more info visit setauketanimalhospital.com. The other is Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter in Kittanning, PA who were established in 1969 to provide temporary shelter for unwanted and abused animals. Orphans of the Storm is a no-kill animal shelter that match lovable animals with loving forever homes, educate the public on humane, responsible care of all animals, and promote spaying and neutering to reduce companion animal overpopulation. Toni and Emily are talking with Bethann, who runs, and manages Orphans of the Storm. Orphans is a no kill animal shelter in Kittaning, PA. The builidng is located in a flood zone, that has caused devastation to their building, and animals in years past. They have acquired land above the flood zone and are raising over 4 million dollars to build out the safe and new facility of their dream. Toni and Emily have been volunteering, and organzing adoption events with Orphans since last Thanksgiving when they were asked  to help with Kongsgiving. Since then, Toni has been accepted on the board, and they have maintained a close relationship with Bethann and her Husband, Brian.  Bethann talks about the history of Orphans of the Storm, and how her mother started the organization because she saw so many stray animals get killed, or discarded in Kittanning. Since then, the rescue has stayed in the family, and has been a beacon of hope, sanctuary, and resilience for the community. Not only does Orphans take in local animals, but from other rescues and shelters in need. At any point in time, they house over 100 animals in their small facility. Orphans of the Storm is always accepting donations. They have three major funds: Their day to day expenses, including vetting, spay, and neutering, their new building fund, and a medical fund for dogs with severe medical needs and attention. They accept donations through their website, and you can also donate at any Healthy Pet Producst location. Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss The Mothman Prophecies, the 2002 film that follows John Klein (Richard Gere), a reporter who researches the legend of the Mothman. Still shaken by the death of his wife two years earlier from Glioblastoma, Klein is sent to cover a news piece and ends up inexplicably finding himself in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where there have been sightings of an unusual creature and other unexplained phenomena. As he becomes increasingly drawn into mysterious forces at work, he hopes they can reconnect him to his wife, while the local sheriff (Laura Linney) becomes concerned about his obsessions. The film claims to be based on actual events that occurred between November 1966 and December 1967 in Point Pleasant, as described by Keel. The New York Times critic Elvis Mitchell judged it "hushed and smooth" but "little more than an adequate shard of winter-doldrums genre fare". The Washington Post's Stephen Hunter dismissed it as "all buzz: It's camerawork on the verge of a meltdown and weird music in search of a composer", and joked seeing it "is like getting mugged in an alley by an especially thuggish crew of Method actors". In Variety, Robert Koehler claimed it "wanders away from its sustained atmospherics into silly expository detours". For The Guardian, Bob Rickard defended it as "an intelligent and creative exploration of the slippery, dream-like world of those who 'get too close'".Chapters00:00 Intro00:15 Title Sequence00:52 Introducing The Mothman Prophecies03:14 Overall Thoughts05:11 What We Liked09:58 What We Disliked18:33 Trivia20:40 Nambucca Heads Creature Folklore23:07 Trivia (Continued)24:58 Ratings25:41 Final Thoughts27:19 Thank You27:46 I'm Like a Bird#mothman #richardgere #nellyfurtado #imlikeabird #flanders #debramessing #aprilfoolsday #aprilfools #drawntogether #thesimpsons #meme #2000smovies #2002 #chaneloberlin #00shorror #thewaterboy #kathybates #familyguy #agathachristie #horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic

Normally, I'm not sure I'd be interested in all of that, but this year is different, so I was excited to be joined by Dr. Dwayne Lehman on the show. The 2020 census is a big deal for Kittanning and Armstrong County. There is a lot of funding that rides on this census along with the fact that many people will be able to make $17 an hour or more by helping to complete the census. It's a great opportunity for individuals and for our community as we move into this pivotal year. Thanks for listening! It's been quite the journey to arrive at this point. We've done the research, we've analyzed the data, we've had the conversations, and we've received your feedback as well. This is the big reveal for what it takes to be one of the best small towns in America. I think the most exciting thing for me is that this looks achievable. We can do this! Let me know your thoughts in the comments and let's get connected and let's get to work. We only have 7 more years to meet this goal and there's a ton of work to do. I couldn't be more excited about the future and I can't wait to see what happens in all of these areas as we drive towards Kittanning 300. Have a blessed day and we'll see you real soon! #BeyondtheBurgh is a series of podcast interviews recorded during my recent trip back to Pittsburgh, PA where I served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints more than 15 years ago. The footage of that trip culminated in the documentary film "Back to the 'Burgh" about my experience as a missionary in Pittsburgh. #BeyondtheBurgh is a bonus feature of the film as these interviews did not make the final cut of the film. But they are nevertheless a huge part of my missionary experience and thus a huge part of the untold story. The Eismann family were one of the first families I met when I got to my first area and starting meeting the people there. And they were one of the most special pieces of my experience in the Kittanning area and Freeport Ward. It's one of the biggest regrets of my life that it took me more than 15 years to make it back for a visit. But I'm glad that I did. And I'm glad that I can share a piece of that visit with you. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

On the morning of September 8, 1756, a band of about three hundred volunteers of a newly created Pennsylvania militia led by Lt. Col. John Armstrong crept slowly through the western Pennsylvania brush. The night before they had reviewed a plan to quietly surround and attack the Lenape, or Delaware, Indian village of Kittanning. The Pennsylvanians had learned that several prominent Delaware who had led recent attacks on frontier settlements as well as a number of white prisoners were at the village. Seeking reprisal, Armstrong’s force successfully assaulted Kittanning, killing one of the Delaware they sought, but causing most to flee—along with their prisoners. Armstrong then ordered the village burned. The raid did not achieve all of its goals, but it did lead to the Indians relocating their villages further away from the frontier settlements. However, it was a major victory for those Pennsylvanians—including Quaker legislators—who believed the colony must be able to defend itself from outside attack, whether from the French, Indians, or another colony.

In 1756 the Colony of Pennsylvania was at war. With the incursion of the French, the Western Delaware peoples of the Ohio Country raided and burned the frontier villages of William Penn’s Peaceable Kingdom. Although the colonial government was staunchly Quaker and did not believe in a standing army, the efforts of Benjamin Franklin rallied the province into action. In September of 1756 Colonel John Armstrong led 300 frontiersmen into the wilderness to raid and destroy the Delaware village of Kittanning. Although celebrated at the time, modern historians question the Kittanning Raid’s true motivations and effectiveness. On this episode we discuss the Kittanning Raid of 1756.
