Happened In the 90's hosted by Steve and Matt picks a day, any day, and then goes back in time to that magical decade we all know and love the 90's, to revisit episodes of tv, movies that premiered, or cultural events that occurred on that day in the 90's. This week Steve & Matt discuss fat kids dancing & the debut of the greatest Sponge who've ever lived!!!SEGMENT 1Show: The Parent 'HoodEpisode: "I Never Danced for My Mother” (Season 2 | Episode: 20)Premiere Date: 5/1/1996Story: Nicholas decides to enter the talent show, and his classically trained mother steps in as his dance teacher. Wendell and Robert come across Zaria's diary.SEGMENT 2Show: Spongebob SquarepantsEpisode: "Help Wanted”/"Reef Blower”/"Tea at the Treedome” (Season 1 | Episode: 1)Premiere Date: 5/1/1999Story: SpongeBob attempts to fulfill his dream of working at the Krusty Krab; SpongeBob meets a squirrel named Sandy and goes to extreme lengths in an attempt to impress her.
An episode that dives deep! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * Recently, SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny, confirmed that SpongeBob is explicitly an autistic character—surprising absolutely no one!* Our hosts kick off the episode by exploring the autistic life and childhood of the show's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, who developed SPINs (special interests) in marine life and Jacques Cousteau as early as age six.* During Hillenburg's time at the Orange County Marine Institute, he created the character Bob the Sponge and wrote The Intertidal Zone, though he faced challenges in getting the book published.* After that, he dove headfirst into his other SPIN—animation—working as an assistant on well-known cartoons before landing a role at a then-small channel called Nickelodeon.* While working on the 90s Nicktoon Rocko's Modern Life, Hillenburg crossed paths with voice actor Tom Kenny. The two collaborated seamlessly, and as we know, Kenny would later become the iconic voice of SpongeBob.* SpongeBob SquarePants debuted as Nickelodeon's first original Saturday morning cartoon on May 1, 1999, achieving massive success. It quickly surpassed Pokémon as the top Saturday morning cartoon. By 2002, the show boasted an audience of 61 million viewers, including 20 million adults aged 18 to 49.* In 2002, Hillenburg wanted to end production of the show, but Nickelodeon saw it as far too lucrative to stop. He left after the release of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004 but returned to work on the show from Season 9 until his passing. SpongeBob SquarePants remains a wildly successful cartoon, still airing new episodes on Nickelodeon 25 years later.* Stephen Hillenburg was known for valuing his privacy and leading a quiet life. However, his autistic sense of justice was evident through his philanthropic efforts, particularly his work with the United Plankton Charitable Trust, which supported environmental and marine conservation initiatives.* Tragically, in 2017, Hillenburg was diagnosed with ALS, a disease that has also been linked to autism.* The character of SpongeBob is like a walking DSM-5 autism diagnosis checklist. He struggles with reading social cues, doesn't realize when he's being bothersome, and while he can be annoying at times, his genuine nature makes him endearing.* SpongeBob also exhibits many other autistic traits, such as having meltdowns, struggling to learn to drive, taking things literally, and showcasing astute problem-solving skills.* SpongeBob also has a special interest in his job as a fry cook, making him the happiest workaholic on television. His passion for flipping Krabby Patties and dedication to his work shine through in every episode, showcasing his deep focus and enthusiasm for what he loves.* We then dive into the legendary career of Tom Kenny, SpongeBob's iconic voice actor. With a prolific career in voice acting, Tom has brought characters to life in cartoons like Rocko's Modern Life, Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls, Transformers, and many more. His versatility and talent have made him one of the most beloved figures in animation.* The autistic-coded traits that Tom Kenny exhibits have had a significant influence on his portrayal of SpongeBob, a character he has explicitly stated is autistic. Kenny's unique approach to SpongeBob's voice, humor, and mannerisms brings a depth to the character that resonates with many in the autistic community.* Sami, our Content Manager (who is autistic and dyspraxic), noticed clear traits of dyspraxia and motor skills difficulties in Patrick, especially in the episode where he's training at the Krusty Krab. Patrick struggles with tasks like mopping and opening jar lids, which reflect the challenges many with dyspraxia face. What's truly heartwarming is how SpongeBob consistently helps Patrick, never giving up on him during the training—showcasing the importance of patience, support, and friendship.* Listen to the episode for a deep dive into how SpongeBob SquarePants portrays neurodivergent traits, and how characters like SpongeBob and Patrick provide meaningful representation and support in ways that resonate with many autistic and neurodivergent viewers!“When we see someone autistic like SpongeBob, we just kind of know it. We kind of don't need to talk to SpongeBob's mom. Thanks. Got it. ” - Angela“One of the joys of being autistic is that we vibe with other people. We have a sixth sense where we are very bottom-up data processors. We do a phenomenon that is referred to as matrixing, where we unconsciously grab a whole bunch of variables and throw them together to get a picture - which is why autistic people are so easily able to identify other autistic people, but neurotypical people have no idea what to make of us and we're strange mysterious cryptids from the woods. So, yeah.” - Matt In this episode, we dive deep into the world of everyone's favorite sponge, SpongeBob, and explore how his character is an unintentionally perfect portrayal of autism. From his social struggles to his unique problem-solving skills, we examine the traits that make him both endearing and relatable to the autistic community. Join Matt and Angela as they unpack how SpongeBob's world reflects the real-life experiences of many autistic individuals, and share your thoughts with us using #AutisticCultureCatch on social media. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to celebrate the 25th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob SquarePants is a children's cartoon created by Stephen Hillenburg. It debuted on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999. As of this podcast, 299 episodes have aired, with more on the way. The show follows the adventures of SpongeBob (Tom Kenny), an anthropomorphic sponge living in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, run by the Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown). Attempting to steal the formula to the Krabby Patty is the villainous Plankton (Mr. Lawrence). Other characters include SpongeBob's friends Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) and Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence) as well as his neighbor and co-worker Squidward (Rodger Bumpass). SpongeBob is Nickelodeon's most successful show and longest running Nicktoon. It has spawned three movies, two spinoffs, and even a Broadway musical. The show has won five Daytime Emmys, including Outstanding Children's Animated Series and two wins for Kenny for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program. Aaron and Josh talk about their history with SpongeBob before going into the first episode. They also discuss its characters, humor, animation, and legacy. We're takin' your questions via Twitter and via our voicemail line (told ya it exists!) on a wide range of topics--Red Sox-related and not-so-Red Sox-related. Which free agent pitchers do we fancy this off-season? How would we replace the Coca-Cola bottles out over the Monster? What's the solution at second base for Boston in 2024? Did SpongeBob wash his hands to the bone during the Krusty Krab training video, or did he clean them so well that they became invisible? What's up with all the questions, anyway? All of that and more on this edition of Pod On Lansdowne! We're on Twitter--ask us more questions there! Gentleman, in this episode I present the official "Buy Like a Guy Diamond to Steak Conversion Chart." It's a tool designed to help you relate the 4 C's of diamond quality to the final price you'll pay, using the analogy of a great steak as a reference point. It's a practical "walking around tool" that can help you navigate the world of diamonds. I highlight the Four C's – Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight – as the key factors that determine a diamond's price. Click here to listen to episode 9 on the topic. First there's the Cut of a diamond, which is the most important aspect of a diamond's beauty and "noticeability," because it determines a diamond's brilliance and sparkle. A skilled diamond cutter plays a pivotal role in creating beautiful, lively diamonds, just as a talented chef elevates the taste of a steak through expertise, tools, and facilities. We can also draw parallels between Color and Clarity in diamonds and the different cuts of meat in steaks. Higher grades of color and clarity in diamonds make them rarer, which means they'll cost more, similar to how premium steak cuts like Wagyu and Filet Mignon command higher prices due to their scarcity. As you can probably guess, the Carat weight in diamonds is equivalent to the size of the steak you order. All things being equal, larger diamonds and bigger cuts of meat will cost more. I can't leave out the trusty burger. We all know that a drive-thru burger from the Krusty Krab is nowhere near as good as one from your favorite sports bar or gourmet burger joint. Ultimately this all leads to the oft repeated and undeniable true statement that, "you get what you pay for." If you'd like help finding a jeweler closer to home, email me at andy@buylikeaguy.com and I'll do my best to put you in touch with some of the best jewelers on earth. In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia conclude Keanu Reeves Month with the 2020 Nickelodeon animated film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the third movie based on the 1999 animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. In order to get SpongeBob away from The Krusty Krab to steal the secret formula easier, Plankton kidnaps SpongeBob's snail Gary to give to King Poseidon. SpongeBob and Patrick embark on a journey to find Gary at Atlantic City where King Poseidon resides to rescue him before it's too late. Keanu Reeves plays as a tumbleweed named Sage who gives them advice on how to overcome their obstacles to rescue Gary. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie aired around August 2020 in theaters in Canada and then on March 2021 in the United States on Paramount+. Critics were mixed with the film saying that the story and humor was weak compared to the two previous films, but the new 3D animation and charm made up for it. Others felt it was an insult since it was produced after Stephen Hillenberg's, the creator of SpongeBob Squarepants, death and a promotional piece for the spinoff series Camp Coral that aired a few months later. What did Patricia and Arun think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support

Who lives in a GameCube under the sea? With five games on the console SpongeBob and pals certainly made a lasting impact on the system. Battle for Bikini Bottom being probably the most well known thanks to the new remake and the speedrunning community that basically willed it into existence (as explained by friend of the show Luigi in his part). But there were four more games including the amazing party game Lights, Camera, Pants! (as remembered by other friend of the show Anneka), the fantastic movie tie-in, as well as Revenge of the Flying Dutchman and Creature from the Krusty Krab. Each one had it's own charm and went well above and beyond what licensed video games can normally achieve. Enjoy this extra long episode and listen to Mike & Neil talk about a cartoon that has gone on to shape them for the rest of their lives. And of course a big shout out to Manscaped! How did work comp become such a misunderstood system and underrated career? When its sole purpose is to help those who are injured after a workplace accident, why do we find ourselves overcoming many of the negative stigmas surrounding this system today? Even one of the most famous modern-day cartoons, SpongeBob, aired an episode where an injured worker leverages a workplace accident as an opportunity to ‘blackmail' the employer (The Krusty Krab in this case).People often meet the world of work comp when they are injured on the job. In this episode, Kristen Chavez, President of Kids' Chance of California discusses how she found her calling in work comp and shares how it led to a purpose-driven and compassionate career. She discusses changing the narrative of work comp, why someone would want to start a career in it, and the impact work comp initiatives can make for injured individuals and their families. If you're curious where you can make a positive impact in your work comp career or wondering if work comp has an opportunity for your skillset, this conversation is for you. Can we blame Mr. Krabs for the famously unsatisfied, angry Krusty Krab pizza customer? Why would Squidward stand up for SpongeBob? Plus, we're taken to Frankie's Marine Biology Corner, where Professor Grande teaches us about real nematodes. Hector claims “Pizza Delivery” is his favorite SpongeBob segment of all time, and Frankie says the same about “Home Sweet Pineapple.” Though we all know both will change their minds as they continue their binge...Let's just let them believe it, at least for this 25 minute conversation. Episode 31 is here and full of laughs! We start by talking Dolan's vacation, before we hear stories of glueing someone to a chair, cooking up some vomit at summer camp, and burning down a Cricket pitch. Then, we try to figure out who might be on the full Krusty Krab staff, going to a water park or theme park, and what servant role would we serve. We close out with a great new edition of our segment "This, This, or That" where Dolan has to match up a candle scent, paint color, and whatever Griff makes up. Another great episode in the books, so tune in now! It's time to relax & enjoy, Welcome Home!
