Tim's work has brought so many beloved characters to life, most notably as the puppeteer and voice of the iconic Johnny 5 in the Short Circuit films. His career with The Jim Henson Company began with Dinosaurs, leading to extensive work with The Muppets, including performing on stage with them at the Hollywood Bowl and O2 Arena! And if that wasn't enough, Tim's voice has graced other movie franchises, bringing to life Frank the Pug in the Men in Black films and Goofy Goober in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
An episode that dives deep! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * Recently, SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny, confirmed that SpongeBob is explicitly an autistic character—surprising absolutely no one!* Our hosts kick off the episode by exploring the autistic life and childhood of the show's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, who developed SPINs (special interests) in marine life and Jacques Cousteau as early as age six.* During Hillenburg's time at the Orange County Marine Institute, he created the character Bob the Sponge and wrote The Intertidal Zone, though he faced challenges in getting the book published.* After that, he dove headfirst into his other SPIN—animation—working as an assistant on well-known cartoons before landing a role at a then-small channel called Nickelodeon.* While working on the 90s Nicktoon Rocko's Modern Life, Hillenburg crossed paths with voice actor Tom Kenny. The two collaborated seamlessly, and as we know, Kenny would later become the iconic voice of SpongeBob.* SpongeBob SquarePants debuted as Nickelodeon's first original Saturday morning cartoon on May 1, 1999, achieving massive success. It quickly surpassed Pokémon as the top Saturday morning cartoon. By 2002, the show boasted an audience of 61 million viewers, including 20 million adults aged 18 to 49.* In 2002, Hillenburg wanted to end production of the show, but Nickelodeon saw it as far too lucrative to stop. He left after the release of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004 but returned to work on the show from Season 9 until his passing. SpongeBob SquarePants remains a wildly successful cartoon, still airing new episodes on Nickelodeon 25 years later.* Stephen Hillenburg was known for valuing his privacy and leading a quiet life. However, his autistic sense of justice was evident through his philanthropic efforts, particularly his work with the United Plankton Charitable Trust, which supported environmental and marine conservation initiatives.* Tragically, in 2017, Hillenburg was diagnosed with ALS, a disease that has also been linked to autism.* The character of SpongeBob is like a walking DSM-5 autism diagnosis checklist. He struggles with reading social cues, doesn't realize when he's being bothersome, and while he can be annoying at times, his genuine nature makes him endearing.* SpongeBob also exhibits many other autistic traits, such as having meltdowns, struggling to learn to drive, taking things literally, and showcasing astute problem-solving skills.* SpongeBob also has a special interest in his job as a fry cook, making him the happiest workaholic on television. His passion for flipping Krabby Patties and dedication to his work shine through in every episode, showcasing his deep focus and enthusiasm for what he loves.* We then dive into the legendary career of Tom Kenny, SpongeBob's iconic voice actor. With a prolific career in voice acting, Tom has brought characters to life in cartoons like Rocko's Modern Life, Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls, Transformers, and many more. His versatility and talent have made him one of the most beloved figures in animation.* The autistic-coded traits that Tom Kenny exhibits have had a significant influence on his portrayal of SpongeBob, a character he has explicitly stated is autistic. Kenny's unique approach to SpongeBob's voice, humor, and mannerisms brings a depth to the character that resonates with many in the autistic community.* Sami, our Content Manager (who is autistic and dyspraxic), noticed clear traits of dyspraxia and motor skills difficulties in Patrick, especially in the episode where he's training at the Krusty Krab. Patrick struggles with tasks like mopping and opening jar lids, which reflect the challenges many with dyspraxia face. What's truly heartwarming is how SpongeBob consistently helps Patrick, never giving up on him during the training—showcasing the importance of patience, support, and friendship.* Listen to the episode for a deep dive into how SpongeBob SquarePants portrays neurodivergent traits, and how characters like SpongeBob and Patrick provide meaningful representation and support in ways that resonate with many autistic and neurodivergent viewers!“When we see someone autistic like SpongeBob, we just kind of know it. We kind of don't need to talk to SpongeBob's mom. Thanks. Got it. ” - Angela“One of the joys of being autistic is that we vibe with other people. We have a sixth sense where we are very bottom-up data processors. We do a phenomenon that is referred to as matrixing, where we unconsciously grab a whole bunch of variables and throw them together to get a picture - which is why autistic people are so easily able to identify other autistic people, but neurotypical people have no idea what to make of us and we're strange mysterious cryptids from the woods. So, yeah.” - Matt In this episode, we dive deep into the world of everyone's favorite sponge, SpongeBob, and explore how his character is an unintentionally perfect portrayal of autism. From his social struggles to his unique problem-solving skills, we examine the traits that make him both endearing and relatable to the autistic community. Join Matt and Angela as they unpack how SpongeBob's world reflects the real-life experiences of many autistic individuals, and share your thoughts with us using #AutisticCultureCatch on social media. It will come as no surprise to regular listeners of this podcast that we are all big fans of Steve Perry, the chief vocalist of Journey. So it should also not come as a surprise that we would want to feature his debut solo studio album called Street Talk. Perry embarked on this solo project shortly after the release of Journey's "Frontiers" album, at a time when the group was packing arenas around the world. The name of the album comes from his pre-Journey days when he was leading a band called Alien Project - but he had at one time considered naming it, "Street Talk." Perry also used Craig Krampf as drummer, who was also a previous member of Alien Project. The album obviously has similarities to Journey due to Perry's vocals, but it is significantly softer than the more pop rock/hard rock approach typical of Journey. The songs are written or co-written by Perry, and showcase Perry's voice in a more ballad-heavy manner. The lead single, “Oh Sherrie,” was written about his relationship with Perry's then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, and hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. We covered “Oh Sherrie” on episode #148, but there are three other singles that broke into the top 40, powering the album to number 12 on the Billboard 200 album charts and to 2x Platinum in sales.Perry had worked outside of Journey during his tenure with the band, including vocal work with both Sammy Hagar and Kenny Loggins. Other members of the band were also working on side projects, so it was expected that all would return to the group after their separate projects. Perry followed suit, this, but troubles began to surface with personnel changes and Perry's mother's failing health causing the "Raised on Radio" Journey album to be delayed.Street Talk gives us a good look at Steve Perry outside of the rest of the Journey band members, during a time when Perry was at the top of his vocal game.Rob brings us this excellent album for today's podcast. She's MineThe track that starts side two is a slow rocker that demonstrates Perry's versatility in musical styles. The lyrics describe a struggle between a guy and his rival over a girl. It made it to number 21 on the US charts - and you can't go wrong with a sax. Captured By the MomentThis song is deeper lyrically, with Perry looking at significant times in history and music as snapshots in a frame. He pays tribute to some key figures from the 60s and 70s including Martin Luther King Jr, Jackie Kennedy, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and others. It has a distinctive 80's keyboard sound. Foolish HeartA subdued piece, this track is the second-biggest hit from the album after "Oh, Sherrie." The lyrics depict a guy longing for love, but who does not trust his heart to make good choices. It was co-written with Randy Goodrum, who wrote "You Needed Me" for Anne Murray. It was the last single released from the album. Strung OutThis faster paced track closes out the album, and discusses love from the perspective of a guy longing for a woman in a relationship with another. "I feel like Bogart in a crazy movie. Bogie and me, we never beg - but this time maybe I've got voices in my head." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Who's the Boss?”Tony Danza plays a former baseball athlete trying to raise his daughter while working as a live-in housekeeper for a single advertising executive. Alyssa Milano played Danza's daughter. STAFF PICKS:I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister Wayne kicks off the staff picks with glam rock sensation Twisted Sister in their follow-up to "We're Not Gonna Take It." Many listeners may be more familiar with a cover of this song performed by SpongeBob SquarePants in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" entitled "Goofy Goober Rock."For Whom the Bell Tolls by MetallicaLynch brings us a signature song from Metallica's 1984 album, "Ride the Lightning." The heavy riffs typical of Metallica are accented by the toll of chimes, and the lyrics are inspired by Ernest Hemmingway's novel of the same name dealing with war, death, and fate set in the Spanish Civil War.Hard Habit to Break by Chicago Bruce takes the tempo way down with a hit off Chicago 17. Vocal duties are carried by Bill Champlin and Peter Cetera, and the song is arranged by David Foster. The lyrics depict a man struggling to get over a long lost love whom he took for granted. Chicago 17 is Chicago's best selling album, and their last with Peter Cetera in the group. No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney Rob closes out the staff picks with a single from the soundtrack to McCartney's film, "Give My Regards to Broad Street." McCartney brings in Pink Floyd alumnus David Gilmour for guitar work on this song. Gilmour requested that his session fee be donated to a charity of Paul's choice. It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Zoolookologie by Jean Michel JarreWe close out on a jazz fusion number from the time which uses samples of voice and spoken words to form an art rock sonic landscape. This week we're back in Cruise control as we follow Tom to a mystical faraway land of blood and honour. It's 2003's The Last Samurai, directed by Edward Zwick, and starring Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe, Tony Goldwyn, Hiroyuki Sanada, Timothy Spall, Billy Connolly, Koyuki, William Atherton, Scott Wilson and Masato Harada. The movie's conception of the dawn of the Meiji Restoration is bafflingly nonsensical, but what it gets wrong about Japan in 1876 can be forgiven for what it gets right about America in 2003. It's a sweeping war epic from the director of Glory, starring Tom Cruise at the height of his leading man swagger, and a supporting cast that notably launched the North American careers of several Japanese treasures of the silver screen. Meanwhile at the theatre, Hayley hit up the re-release of Ex Machina while J Mo caught up with Love Lies Bleeding. Other works discussed in this episode include Blow Out, Civil War, Godzilla vs Kong, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Godzilla Minus One, Children of Men, The Good Shepherd, Pooh's Heffalump Movie, Batman Begins, Inception, Gladiator, Troy, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Gossip, White Noise, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The Mummy, Hot Rod, The Walking Dead, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Tropic Thunder, Days of Thunder, Valkyrie, Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut, and Minority Report among others. We will be back next week to celebrate the release of Alex Garland's Civil War by tracing it all the way back to the last American civil war, as we check in with returning favourite Heath Ledger and returning gremlin Mel Gibson in 2000's The Patriot -- a movie that sadly just like The Last Samurai is not currently available to stream in Canada. Oh well. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

There's nothing more iconic to Mike and Neil than seeing Spongebob and Patrick driving out of Bikini Bottom in their pattymobile. Since debuting in 1999 Spongebob has taken the world by storm with everything the yellow sponge had done before serving as a lead up to getting his name on the big screen in 2004. The five year wait proved successful as the movie was a huge success and has lived in the hearts of minds of many fans for almost two decades. Mike & Neil sit down to go through the movie, what it does well, what it doesn't (barely anything?) and why watching it today is just as funny as it was in 2004 with our dads laughing at the pirates in the theatre.

In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia conclude Nicktoons Movie Month with a vs. match between the 2004 film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie vs. the 2015 sequel The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, SpongeBob and Patrick travel to Shell City to retrieve King Neptune's crown in 7 days before he executes Mr. Krabs whom he believed stole and sold the crown. In reality, it was Plankton who stole it as a part of Plan Z to take over Bikini Bottom. In Sponge Out of Water, SpongeBob and Plankton have to work together to retrieve the Krabby Patty formula after it was stolen by a pirate named Burger Beard. He was able to succeed in his plans thanks to a magical book that can make anything happen when you write on it. SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy journey into the surface and fight Burger Beard to get the formula back. When The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie premiered in theaters, it received mixed to positive reviews from critics calling it a "charming romp", but an overextended episode of the show. However, it has become a childhood favorite for fans of the show still regarded as the best film in the trilogy. It currently has a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. When Sponge Out of Water premiered in theaters, it was praised for Antonio Banderas' performance, its wacky, fun adventure, and zany humor. However some fans state that it wasn't as good as the original. When Arun and Patricia recorded the episode, it was rated 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, it has changed to 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and no longer in Crystal Skull territory. Which film did Arun and Patricia enjoy the most? The original or the sequel? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Now, more than fifteen years later, Andrew is writing for all three SpongeBob shows.
