An impromptu decision to do something "Halloween-y" led us to 1994 meta-slasher Wes Craven's New Nightmare, the seventh installment in the long-running A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, which sees Craven returning to the director's chair for the first time since the original installment and OG Nightmare final girl Heather Langenkamp returning, playing a semi-fictionalized version of herself. Several layers more complex than the premise initially suggests, New Nightmare brings the franchise back to its roots, examining childhood trauma and ideation and offering thoughtful considerations about Craven's legacy as a storyteller and how his films have affected those who participate in bringing his nightmarish visions to life - a full two years before Craven's smash hit Scream would go on to mine similar thematic territory with its meta explorations of genre. We discuss the film's self-reflexive look at the Nightmare franchise, and how Craven attempts to ellicit new fears from purposefully identifiable rehashes of his work. Then, we discuss the film's surprisingly intricate exploration of Langenkamp as performer and icon - how the film reckons with audience expectations and seeks atonement for turning its star into curio for our own catharsis. Finally, we discuss reference, reflexivity, and homage and consider why Craven's self-quoting offers more than the empty nostaligia-laden iconography of so many current films.  Get access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans lose a loved one in a car crash every single year. So why don't more of us talk about it — and why don't more of us take action to prevent other families from enduring those tragedies, too? On this special episode of The Brake, host Kea Wilson has an emotional conversation with advocate Dan Langenkamp about the people they've each recently lost to traffic violence, and what it means to mourn through advocacy.  Dan's wife, Sarah, was a celebrated diplomat to Ukraine and a mother of two young sons before she was killed by a right-turning truck driver as she biked home from her children's new elementary school on August 25. Now, Dan is gathering cyclists from around the country to retrace Sarah's route and ride all the way to Congress to demand safer streets, vehicles, and systems — and he wants you to take part.  Register for the Ride for Your Life, support the Langenkamp family's ongoing fundraising efforts for bicycle safety organizations, and learn more the life and legacy of Sarah Langenkamp.

Happy Halloween kiddies! In 1994 Wes Craven reinvented the genre by giving his iconic character the meta treatment. Freddy becomes so much more than just a dream slasher with a knife glove. He becomes the manifestation of regular life fears. This movie has a proto babadook feel. A proto scream feel. A proto meta horror feel. Craven didn't always strike gold, but he managed to pioneer a creative approach every decade. Great movie to end the the inaugural Thirsty For Gore season on! We're back to Stallone next week! Heather Langenkamp is a horror icon courtesy of her work as Nancy in A Nightmare on Elm Street. When you strike gold with an opportunity like that, it's hard to imagine ever finding another role that's on that same level. Langenkamp even said as much; “I knew nothing could be as good as Nancy. I've always felt that as a teenager and as a woman who grew up looking for good roles, it was really hard to find roles as good as that one.” But, then The Midnight Club came her way. She continued, “Except for now. I really feel like I found a role that's just as good as Nancy.”Langenkamp plays Dr. Georgina Stanton in The Midnight Club on Netflix. She runs Brightcliffe, a hospice for terminally ill young adults. Dr. Stanton insists on giving her residents the trust, care, and support they need to “focus on living instead of fighting.” She understands some come to Brightcliffe leaning into unorthodox remedies and doesn't judge them for it, but it's the one that her newest resident, Iman Benson's Ilonka, falls into that does become quite concerning. While celebrating the show's big debut at New York Comic Con, Langenkamp took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to revisit her journey from becoming a genre legend via A Nightmare on Elm Street to joining the cast of Mike Flanagan's latest Netflix series. New Year, "New" Movies! This week, we review Wes Craven's New Nightmare. That's right, the film wherein Freddy's father/ creator Wes Craven returned to the franchise. He had something of a falling out with New Line Cinema over licensing and their deviation from his vision with sequels, but Bob Shaye made amends, laying the foundation for what would become this film. This film breaks the fourth wall, introducing Heather Langenkamp, not her earlier character Nancy Thompson. Similarly, we get to see Robert Englund, John Saxon, and Wes Craven as themselves. Unfortunately, we do not see the hyperbolic Craven he envisioned, road tripping with characters from his earlier films, but still, it is something. The film also is a bit of art recreating life, as Craven incorporated Langenkamp's actual struggles with a stalker into this film. You wanna hear about that? Well, we talk about it! Along with the novelization, set design, costuming, makeup, and a bunch of stuff we really are not qualified to comment on! We analyze this film, and the introduction of "The Entity," to Dean Koontz's 1983 novel, Phantoms... and thereby Stephen King's It from 1986. Wes Craven (RIP) created such an indelible pop cultural icon in Freddy Krueger, and bolstered by Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp's performances and a killer (pun intended) premise, his 1984 classic lives on as one of the most beloved horror films of all time. But does its reputation still hold true 33 years after audiences first met the Springwood Slasher? And which of his several follow-up appearances reigns supreme. Join us—Pete Wright and Andy Nelson—on this week's episode of Rash Pixel's "Movies We Like" as we continue our October Horror series with this film. We talk about the differences between the original and this remake, what works in the remake and what doesn't. We talk about the great effects work, as well as Snyder and his career. We discuss the great actors in this film and the inherent problem of having too many characters for us to have to pay attention to, as well as what characters and relationships ended up being the ones we latched onto. We chat about the interesting connection Heather "A Nightmare on Elm Street" Langenkamp has to this film. And we talk about our favorite moments in the film—the ones that always work and create great zombie moments, regardless of how ridiculous they may be. It's a fun and scary film, and the penultimate in our month of horror movies. Listen in!
