It's Die Hard in a simulation! This week, hosts Phil and Liam are following the white rabbit into one of the most prophetic and influential movie of the 90s - The Matrix (1999) - with special guest Matt Zoller Seitz, the renowned Editor at Large of rogerebert.com. He is a Features Writer at New York Magazine, and is the author of many books, including books on Wes Anderson, Mad Men, The Sopranos, and many more. Matt not only loves this movie, but talks eloquently about how it changed his life. Released in the banner year of 1999, The Matrix follows Thomas Anderson, a mild-mannered software engineer who moonlights as a notorious hacker known as Neo, discovers to his horror that the world he lives in is actually an elaborate simulated reality created by intelligent machines who have subjugated humanity. Guided by the enigmatic resistance leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and the skilled warrior Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), Neo learns the truth about the Matrix and his potential role as "The One," a prophesied savior who can bend, and perhaps break, its rules. As he battles powerful Agents led by the ruthless Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), Neo must embrace his destiny and free his mind to prevent the machines' enslavement of humanity. We talk about the film's unexpected connections to Die Hard (Kinda blowing Matt's mind), the movie's philosophical complexity (Plato! Descartes! Baurdrillard!), it's appropriation by both the right and left-wing, and if it can be seen, 26 years on, as being somewhat optimistic. We also talk about the culture-chaning action, the amazing performances by Reeves, Moss, Fishburne, and Weaving, and how the movie's style hasn't aged a day. So call your operator and strap in for one of our most mind-blowing episodes yet!Listen now, wherever you get your podcasts! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I'm dreaming of a terrible movie / Just like the ones Dan nominates / Where the plot is leaden / And acting deadens / But Laurence Fishburne's charisma dominates, so dominates...Continuing Fishmas with one of the worst movies we've done for this pod--and Fishburne is still fantastic. Merry Fishmas! We celebrate all things somber and authoritative with a selection of Laurence Fishburne masterpieces. In addition to Contagion, we're re-releasing our other Fishburne bangers including audience favorite Event Horizon and the truly execrable The Colony (our only episode devoted to script doctoring!).However, be forewarned: This is a non-jolly re-watch. Contagion has aged all too well, even four years after lockdown. We appreciate your patience with our erratic posting as of late: Dan got sick, Ana's house sprung a leak, and, you know ::gestures vaguely:: We hope you're doing ok. Welcome back to the resurrection of the podcast that started it all—welcome to "Second Chance Schwartzy" with the indomitable brothers Aleks and Milenko! This time, they're revisiting the golden era of Arnold Schwarzenegger's filmography, kicking off with a deep dive into the 1988 buddy cop comedy, "Red Heat."Picture this: Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ivan Danko, a Soviet Union cop sent on a special assignment to the chaos of Chicago, USA. His partner in this odd couple adventure? The hilarious Jim Belushi as Art Ridzik. It's a fish-out-of-water story with a touch of the buddy cop dynamic that defined the era. While "Red Heat" might seem like a goofy comedy at first glance, the brothers reveal its hidden layers. The film cleverly explores the cultural clash between Danko's Soviet background and Ridzik's Chicago upbringing, emphasizing the surprising similarities between the two. Set against the backdrop of the dwindling Cold War tensions and the impending dismantling of the Soviet Union, the movie captures a unique moment in history. But that's not all—the plot thickens with Ed O'Ross playing Viktor Rosta, the notorious USSR drug pusher and big bad guy. The narrative weaves a subplot involving the Cleanheads, a Black liberation movement, drawing intriguing parallels between Black liberation in America and socialist principles in the USSR. It's a dense and captivating plot that unfolds against the backdrop of East meeting West."Red Heat" is a classic tale with an ensemble cast that's nothing short of iconic—Gina Gershon, Laurence Fishburne, Peter Boyle, and more. The movie surprises with its depth and intriguing layers, making it a classic worth revisiting. So, join the brothers as they unravel the intricacies of this Schwarzenegger gem in "Second Chance Schwartzy." It's a blast from the past that promises to be a great and surprising ride!
Shigg, Titus and Missy are continuing the conversations that are happening out there. RIP Pee Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) and Angus Cloud; Laurence "Larry" Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis; Lizzo's being sued for sexual harassment; Salma Hayek vs JLO vs Sofia Vergara; Selena Gomez has the heavies; Drake has started the War of the Bra; Jeff Bezos; Kim K; and more. Scarcity and abundance. When the chips are down, could it be an opportune time to focus on what you do have, create win-win situations, and incorporate gratitude into your daily life? But how do we do this when we feel overwhelmed or even hopeless? In this episode Michelle Fishburne shows us how using a simple whiteboard helped her on the journey to training her mind to recognize possibilities instead of wallowing in doubt and self-pity.Michelle Fishburne was a normal person, with a house and a job, before COVID hit, but life would throw her a curve ball when she lost her job in the spring of 2020, so Michelle moved into her 2006 motorhome and did the unthinkable. She motor-homed 12,000 miles all over the United States and sat down with hundreds of people face-to-face. People shared what their lives were like, what made them struggle, and what surprised them. The personal histories show a diversity of American lives, resilience, and sorrow. That is how "Who We Are Now: Stories of What Americans Lost and Found During the COVID-19 Pandemic" came to be.Everyone's story is different. Some, like Fishburne, lost their jobs. Others lost family, friends, and even their own health and well-being. And yet among the difficulties, many found something that had eluded them before the pandemic. These testimonies offer a glimpse into what people across America lost and found during the pandemic's critical first year. Fishburne lets us hear people's stories as if we were there, in real time, at the beginning of COVID-19, when employment was uncertain, schools were online, and American life more unpredictable than ever before. Michelle Fishburne is a full-time digital nomad, working and living out of her 2006 motor home, Airbnb's, and housesitting gigs. Forced pivots are the hardest; it can feel like the rug is being pulled out from underneath you. If you look at it as negative and filled with scarcity, that's all you find. But, if you see it as an opportunity to try something new and the abundance that comes with it, you can create something magical. Michelle Fishburne, author of Who We Are Now, found herself without a job, spouse or house during the pandemic. She packed up her RV and drove around the country listening to others' stories, which led her to write a book. More about Michelle: Until her life turned upside down in 2020, Michelle Fishburne had taken a fairly traditional route in life -- law school, attorney, stay-at-home mom, and then public relations when she reentered the workforce. All normacy went out the window, though, when she lost her job in the COVID spring and could not find another one, despite months of trying. When the lease on her post-divorce house was up on July 31 and her youngest was heading off to college, Michelle found herself without a spouse, a house, a job, or a kid to take care of. She moved into her 2006 motorhome with her dog, Buddy, and started driving. That was the beginning of a breathtaking pivot.

My guest this week is Michelle Fishburne. In 2020-2021 Michelle traveled 12,000 miles in her RV interviewing hundreds of people about what their lives were like during the Covid-19 pandemic. Michelle turned those stories into a beautiful book Who We Are Now: Stories of What Americans Lost and Found during the COVID-19 Pandemic I had a great chat with Michelle about her travels, about being a third generation RVer, what it was like to travel solo in her RV during the pandemic and some of the key take-aways from the people she met on her journey. Michelle Fishburne's life turned upside down during the 2020 COVID spring when she lost her job and could not find another notwithstanding months of trying. At the end of July 2020, when the lease on her post-divorce house was up and her youngest was going off to college, Michelle found herself without a house, a spouse, a job, or a kid to take care of. That is what she did NOT have. What she DID have was a 2006 motorhome, tons of curiosity, and a lot of experiencing RVing all over the country. She combined all of these into a cross-country project, interviewing people about their lives during the pandemic. She RV'd 12,000 miles and interviewed hundreds of people. Now 100 of those 1st-person stories are being published by UNC Press and the Duke Center for Documentary Studies in “Who We Are Now: Stories of What Americans Lost and Found During the COVID-19 Pandemic” (March 2023). Michelle continues to be a full-time nomad, living and working in her motorhome, Airbnb's, and the occasional house sitting gig. Her favorite thing about aging is that it gives us each anopportunity to change and see the many facets of ourselves, reassembled each time in different ways, like a kaleidoscope. What You Will Hear in This Episode: 3:15 What lead up to Michelle's obstacle on August 1st 5:33 The process of interviewing Americans during the Pandemic 7:06 Challenges of being on the road as a single woman 11:26 Hardships the Fishburne faced creating her Pandemic Project 16:43 The momentous stride from interviewing in the Pandemic 18:27 Interpersonal lessons from Michelle's overall experience 20:57 A common thing learned from interviewing others 28:44 The next steps and projects aligned for Michelle Quotes “As we get older in life and society, things are less capable, we're just much more capable because we have built this incredible quiver of so many different eras of skills and experiences.” “There is so much energy that can happen when you focus on the fact that we're all walking each other home and you really immerse yourself into that. It's just love and community, and that makes every day great.” “Sometimes life doesn't work out and you go back into the maze when the cheese is not appearing in the same place it usually is. Go back out into the maze and find a new cheese or different cheese, and you might like it better.” “The benefit of getting older is that we get to see different versions of ourselves. But if everything is comfy and cozy, we tend to stay comfy. The moment the rug is pulled out from underneath, you have to do something different and you get to see a different version of yourself.” “When your kids are watching you and when you have to think about what you're role modeling and what their needs are, it has to be spirited courage.” “This sense of wanting to know how others were doing, and that by hearing other people's stories, people were healing.” “Aging is an opportunity to change and learn more about ourselves.” “We can practice self-awareness in the comfort of our homes. It's just a matter of making it an intention and focus.” Mentioned: Book: Who We Are Now: Stories of What Americans Lost & Found During the COVID-19 Pandemic Jim Perdue - President of Purdue Farms Harvard study on Happiness www.whowearenow.us Connect with Bonnie https://bonniemarcusleadership.com/ https://web.facebook.com/bonnie.marcus/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/bonniemarcus https://twitter.com/selfpromote https://www.instagram.com/self_promote_/ Gendered Ageism Survey Results Forbes article 5 Tips to own the superpower of your age IAMMusicGroup Purchase my book Not Done Yet on Amazon: If you enjoyed this episode of Badass Women Podcast, then make sure to subscribe to the podcast and drop us a five-star review.

Twenty-five years ago, director Paul W. S. Anderson followed up his video game adaptation Mortal Kombat with an R-rated hard sci-fi scary movie. Starring Sam Neill after Jurassic Park and Laurence Fishburne before The Matrix, this cosmic horror was rushed to release in order to fill a Paramount slot in theaters vacated by James Cameron's Titanic after the latter film ran overtime in production. While Cameron's movie about a lost ship would go on to a December release that saw it win 11 Oscars and become the highest-grossing film of all time, Anderson's search-and-rescue thriller was a commercial and critical failure. While it gained traction on home video and eventually became a cult classic, the studio torched cut footage ruling out the chance of us ever seeing a director's cut release of what was originally a much scarier, much weirder, and much gorier film. Shat The Movies loves a good horror movie, and all three hosts were thrilled when listener Robert in Germany commissioned "Event Horizon." This 1997 space freak-out film combined sci-fi and infernal themes with performances from Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, leaving the entire Shat Crew changed. In this episode, Big D points out filmmakers were entirely too optimistic on Earthlings' space-faring timeline. Gene accuses "Event Horizon" of being an "Alien" ripoff, and Ash cheers the concept of a haunted house in space. Remember the paper-and-pencil demo of how to fold space-time? The Latin recording with the cannibal orgy? Who could forget! And the jump scares are top-notch, even if a few are a little forced. "Event Horizon" was a landmark film for so many of us '80s and '90s kids, but does it still hold its place among the spooky greats? Listen and find out. Osmosis Jones is the first movie that the gang - even Marcus, who brought this film for discussion - unanimously dislikes. Split between live-action sequences of Bill Murray's truly abhorrent mid-life crisis lifestyle and an animated TV series buddy cop back-and-forth, we can begin by completely disregarding the live-action half of this movie as irredeemable. Ozzy and Drix's camaraderie, Fishburne's performance and construction of Thrax as a character and villain, and the clever medical jokes and references about the human body are the highlights of this film, and Michael and Iris even have a couple of brain blasts of how to redesign this movie to be...actually good. New Best Seat segment when? Content warning: Medical horror, strong language.

One of the most radical studio releases of the nineties, Deep Cover stars Laurence Fishburne (in his final role billed as Larry) as an undercover cop posing as a drug dealer while working for the DEA. He teams up with an unsuspecting mobbed-up lawyer (Jeff Goldblum) and they form an unlikely friendship as Fishburne moves up the towards the top of a cocaine cartel and discovers the horrible truth about the war on drugs and the whims of U.S. foreign policy while wrestling with his own tortured conscience. It's a super-left political movie disguised as a thriller that got a wide release in 1992: a hip hop classic with echoes of film noir and even Apocalypse Now, made with great style by Bill Duke, loaded with quotable dialogue and charged with major Dudes Rock energy from Fishburne and Goldblum. We also talk about how Deep Cover's soundtrack draws a through-line between Serge Gainsbourg and Dr. Dre. Follow Zach Vasquez on Twitter. Trailer for Deep Cover (Duke, 1992)
Sometimes life turns you upside down, dumps you on the floor, and asks “so what are you going to do about it?” Today's guest, Michelle Fishburne, believes those are the moments in life that have led her to become her best version. The most recent dump-on-the-floor moment happened in 2020. At the beginning of January 2020, Michelle had a job she loved, she lived in a house she adored, and her youngest was in her senior year of high school. By August 1, Michelle did not have a job or a house and her youngest went off to college. Instead of being afraid, Michelle leaned into the moment and created a version of herself that had been lying dormant for years. Michelle moved into her motorhome in September 2020 and traveled 12,000 miles all over America, interviewing people about their lives during the pandemic. Her project, called Who We Are Now, will be published by UNC Press in 2022. After she submits the manuscript this summer, she'll be headed off again, all over America, for her next book. Michelle found the best version of herself. Prior to launching this project, Michelle has been a public relations and partnership director for national nonprofits, a homeschool teacher, a newspaper columnist, and an international corporate attorney. When she found herself out of a job in the midst of a global pandemic, Michelle Fishburne got the idea to hop in her RV and travel the country to find out how people have fared throughout 2020. Her oral history project called Who We Are Now highlights the first-hand stories she's gathered on her journey and today, she joins us on the podcast to share her insights into what she's learned about people in small towns. At a time when so many things threaten to divide us, this episode reminds us of all the ways in which we're united. If we can “park judgment” as Michelle says, and keep our minds and hearts open, there is nothing we can't get through. About Michelle Michelle Fishburne started Who We Are Now in September 2020, when she left her home in North Carolina and RV'd west, all the way out to Wyoming, in search of stories of how Americans are making their way through this challenging time. She's interviewed small town mayors, yoga instructors, doctors, teachers, grocery store owners, corn hole board makers, etc. All sorts of people because everyone has a story. Everyone's life has changed in some way because of the pandemic. Who We Are Now captures those stories, in each person's own words. In this episode, we cover: What it means and why it matters to “park judgment” The role that fear and assumptions play in our inability to connect with others How to be our best selves and focus on serving one another The value of local leadership and local decision-making The ways that the pandemic has made us better Links + Resources Mentioned New stories are posted every week to Michelle's Who We Are Now website: www.whowearenow.us and her Facebook and Instagram accounts @whowearenowusa. Now on to my guest for today Michelle Fishburne, who turned her job loss into an opportunity building Who We Are Now, a glimpse into the life of Americans in 2020. Michelle started out professionally as a high-powered attorney, traveling around the world. When she started a family, she opted to stay home and delved into homeschooling. This led her to get curious about education and alternatives to traditional education. Most recently she worked as an executive for the Brian Hamilton Foundation's Inmates to Entrepreneurs program. Ever unconventional, when Michelle found herself out of a job and her children gone earlier this year, she opted to hit the road. Since July she's been traveling the country, documenting and sharing stories and pictures of how people around the country are living and coping with the pandemic, sharing them at Who We Are Now online. A recurring theme in Michelle's stories and in our conversation was how vital the local community is, especially downtowns, and how people can really step up and find creative solutions to current challenges when they work together. Michelle's stories attest to the power of ingenuity and compassion for others you can find all around the country, no matter your political stripe. Now, let's get better together. Actions to Try or Advice to Take Looking for a dose of hope on a dark day? Check out Fishburne's stories at WhoWeAreNow.com. Fishburne highlights some remarkable stories of people and businesses coming together to save and preserve their local communities. While big businesses have a place, local businesses help keep a community connected and can help foster a feeling of belonging. Whether you're a consumer or an entrepreneur, look at your own local community. How can you help those who are struggling close by? Supporting just one business can have a ripple effect. (And if you have a story to share, Fishburne invites people to message her @ WhoWeAreNow2020@gmail.com.) Get curious. Fishburne says entrepreneurs are insatiably curious. This time, we're taking a look at 2014's The Signal and along the way we'll ask what exactly is this film going for? What would you do with bionic appendages? And what are the rules for a successful road trip? Let's dig in…. The Signal Movie Cast and Crew Directed by William Eubank: Eubank's first film, a sci-fi Indie feature titled Love, received critical acclaim and was then given a significantly larger budget to create The Signal. Love's budget was a meager $500,000, while this film was budgeted at $4 million. However, our podcast show's hosts speculated that maybe The Signal would've been better served as an anthology type series or even as a video game. Eubank's latest film, Underwater, was a commercial flop and given the lack of success seen with that film, Eubank may very find himself in director jail while he labors to find his next project. Starring Brenton Thwaites as Nic: 2014 was a big year for Thwaites as he also appeared in The Giver, Ride and Maleficent. He has since gone on to appear in bigger blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and is now starring as Dick Grayson/Nightwing on the DC Universe exclusive Titans. However, The Signal doesn't take advantage of Thwaites' ability as an actor as most his characterization occurs via the use of flashbacks or from situations described by his compatriots during the film. Olivia Cooke as Haley: A relative newcomer at this point in 2014, Cooke also had a starring role in the modern retelling of the Psycho narrative in the A&E series Bates Motel, as an early love interest of Norman Bates. She's since appeared in the Steven Spielberg adaptation of the novel Ready Player One. However, her character of Haley in this movie is largely absent for the second act of the film and much like with Brenton Thwaities, the majority of her acting talents were left off the table. Beau Knapp as Jonah: Knapp has been working steadily since 2011 and has quickly earned a reputation as a character actor having appeared in films like Super 8, Run All Night, Southpaw, The Finest Hours, and The Nice Guys and Death Wish (2018). Much like Cooke's character, Jonah is front and center in the first act, largely absent in the second act, and sacrifices himself in the third act so Nic and Haley can briefly escape. Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Wallace Damon: There isn't much else we can say about Fishburne's legendary career at this point. For further details about Fishburne, check out our past episode covering The Matrix. There are times where it feels like Fishburne is too big for this film, but he adds a certain gravitas when surrounded by his younger counterparts. The Signal Movie Summary: So What's Happening Here? The Signal is noted for its unique evolution. It initially begins as a road trip film as Nic and Jonah are helping Haley across the country from M.I.T to Cal Tech. There's also a romantic subplot with Nic contemplating the future of his relationship with Haley and if long distance could work for them (spoiler, it never works). Nic is also afflicted with some type of vague degenerative disease, but it's never explicitly mentioned as to what that disease is and this is further enforced through the use of flashbacks that imply Nic was able bodied prior to the events of the film. While the three friends on this road trip, Nic and Jonah are tracking a mysterious hacker known only as the moniker “Nomad” who is partially responsible for all of them landing in trouble while attending M.I.T.. Nomad then lays a series of breadcrumbs to an unknown location somewhere in the Southwest when they are confronted or abducted. At this point in the film it's unclear what exactly happens, and they suddenly awaken in a research facility run by Dr. Damon who enlightens Nic that what they encountered in the desert was probably an alien. Once the film makes this turn, things get even weirder from there. We gain almost no insight into the purpose for keeping Nic...
