There's a quote by Mark Patterson, where he said "Inheritance is what you leave to someone, a legacy is what you leave in someone." Meaning there's a big difference, between wanting to do right by our family in creating a financial security net for them and setting them up with the capabilities to make the choices and decisions once they've received that financial gift. We need to prepare them to handle the furnace, because no matter how much we plan all the things life can still hit hard. In leaving a legacy we are preparing the ones we love to make good choices when we are gone, even when the times are tough. Are you leaving a legacy along with your wealth? If you're a leader, no matter what industry you're in, you're in the people development business. That mindset is critically important when you're guiding a team through times of change, fear and uncertainty. Today, we're discussing one of my favorite books of 2022, “10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times” by Tom Ziglar (son of iconic motivational speaker Zig Ziglar — one of the greats). It's about creating an environment that will help your team thrive through adversity, and it should be at the top of your reading list this year. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/get-forward-focused/message
Tom Ziglar's latest book “10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times” shares that, while the virtues have not changed, people's priorities in life have shifted and become more intentional and foundational during, and since, the pandemic. In this episode of The Teamwork Advantage, Tom shares his research and discusses how leaders need to adapt in today's ever changing time of disruption.Tom talks about a few of the virtues that top leaders possess today, like selflessness. One thing that resonated with me during the interview was that gratitude and fear cannot operate in the same space. We need to start each day in a place of gratefulness.Tom also shares his step-by-step approach to the perfect start to every day that, when followed, will set you up for success.

#992: Respect is generally seen as something earned or demanded. In civilian life we tend to give respect to those we deem have earned it from us or we begrudgingly give it to those we feel beholden to, such as a boss. We depict the military as those in authority demanding respect regardless of anything. Is it possible and relevant to give everyone respect no matter what, and is this possible or feasible? Tom Ziglar showcases respect as the third virtue in his book, 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times, and once again we look at a virtue as not only the seemingly right thing to do, but the most profitable. In this episode we unpack what giving respect to anyone and everyone looks like, and what it doesn't. I think you'll find it frees you to healthfully and proudly give everyone respect in a way that benefits you both. It is not a zero-sum game, but a win-win you can use to elevate your social credit and personal success.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
#990: How to be selfless for personal gain sounds like click bait, which is why we take on this topic that Tom Ziglar lists as the 2nd virtue in his book, 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times. I wanted to confront this issue as I feel we can miss the value of it in our lives because the concept is a bit preposterous. The Bible talks about dying to self. Does anyone feel they have accomplished this? When something feels unreachable we tend to just abandon it. Selfless is the opposite of selfish, but it doesn't mean it's without self interest. If I have food and you don't and I keep mine for myself, that's pure selfishness. If I give some or even all of my food to you we'd say this is selfless. But look at the word. Selfless is less self. Not zero self. Giving my food to you makes me feel good about myself. I still get benefit. Maybe even more. And more often than not our selfless acts get noticed and what goes around comes around. The point is understanding how being selfless serves others, and us. And it's ok that you aren't in fact totally dead to yourself. If you read the Bible contextually you'll see testimony that dying to self may speak more to dying to your lower, base, selfish self, and being born again to your higher, best self. There is still a self there and that is ok. This podcast is presented by Ziglar, the most trusted name in personal and professional development. It seems like news media everywhere are talking about “The Great Resignation.” In the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns, workers realized that they didn't want to go back to “normal.” Normal wasn't working. Jason Cooper with be talking with Tom Ziglar about his new book and much more. With the world changing so rapidly, many leaders struggle to find new ways to make a significant and positive impact on their team. The key, says Tom Ziglar, is to consistently bring out the best in everyone by focusing on ten core virtues: kindness, humility, respect, persistence, selflessness, encouragement, positive expectations, self-control, firmness, and hope. Delivering cutting-edge new research, wisdom gleaned from experience, and poignant insights from his work at Zig Ziglar Corp, Tom Ziglar identifies the communication styles that will keep everyone on the same page, regardless of their working environment. He also emphasizes the importance of closing the "empathy gap" between management and staff in order to create a more connected team that operates to its fullest potential--and how developing each team member's unique dreams, goals, and abilities sets up the company for success. In 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times, Ziglar shows why "coach leadership," instead of management leadership, is the best way to lead through immense change and challenge. It is essential guidance for leaders who want to coach their teams through inevitable periods of disruption with the goal of helping them thrive at home and at work.

#946: “What are the top 3 leadership challenges you see in business, as a business owner or as an employee?” This is the question I posed to our audience. The comments were varied and valuable. Tom Ziglar is becoming a go to expert on what began as a topic of disruption, then recently onto the aspect of “the great resignation” but Tom is rising to acclaim as he looks at it as the “great reimagination.” Here however, with all the responses, you'll hear most of them coming down to...relationships. The primary leadership challenges point to simply relating to one another with actual care. But as we come to again and again, the workplace so often misses the fact that it's about people and not business. We take this head on in the following episode. To fully grasp and take advantage of this opportunity in your own leadership...pre-order Tom Ziglar's new book, 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times, right now at 10leadershipvirtuesbook.com.
