This week on Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two fantastic guests who bring both incredible stories and valuable insights to the show. Leading things off is John Cook, a 21-time winner across the PGA and Champions Tours and a former National Champion from his days at Ohio State. This marks John's 10th visit to the show, and every conversation with him ha been fantastic thanks to his upbeat attitude and passion for the game — you can literally hear the smile in his voice. We kick things off by talking about this year's Mexico Open, a tournament that holds special meaning for John since his father, Jim Cook, helped resurrect it back in the 1980s, and John himself went on to win it in 1995. As we continue looking ahead to this year's U.S. Open at Oakmont, John also shares his memories of competing in the 1994 U.S. Open there. We also reminisce about some of the fun team events he's played in alongside Sergio Garcia, Mark O'Meara, and Rex Caldwell. Following John, I'm excited to welcome Jeff Harper to the show for the first time. Jeff is the Director of Operations for Byler Holdings, which owns and manages five fantastic golf courses across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Each course presents its own unique challenge, making them the perfect progression for players as they advance their skills. Jeff takes us on a virtual tour of Broad Run Golfer's Club in West Chester, Iron Valley in Lebanon, Berkleigh Golf Club in Kutztown, Lebanon Valley in Myerstown, and Blue Mountain in Fredericksburg. With his passion for golf and knack for storytelling, Jeff brings these courses to life and highlights what makes each one special. It's a can't-miss episode for anyone looking to discover hidden gems and enjoy some great golf stories along the way.
Lined with quaint shops and historic buildings, Annville is one of the most charming towns in the Lebanon Valley. However, in 1887, Annville became the scene of horror after 60-year-old William Showers committed two of the most sensational murders in the county's history on the outskirts of town. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/paoddities/support
UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls met in another of the big battles that should determine who goes to the playoffs out of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, whether it's one, two or three teams. And even though one of the most decorated offensive players on the field was held in check -- not to mention off the field -- for the vast majority of the game, River Falls still had a shot at the end. We chat with UW-Whitewater coach Jace Rindahl about his team, his fired-up sideline demeanor, his decision to start going for two in the second quarter and more in this week's podcast. And Matt Walker of UW-River Falls talks about what's still there for his Falcons to accomplish. But there's more ... This edition of the podcast is sponsored by d3photography.com, the licensed photography bureau contracted by D3sports.com. It was a big week for dreams getting crushed just a little bit as well this week. Washington U. had designs on getting into the D3football.com Top 25 (they were already ranked in the coaches poll) but fell at home to Augustana. Carleton fans were looking for a little respect up at St. John's after a 5-0 start. And King's took down Lebanon Valley, which had been riding high ever since Week 1 against Franklin & Marshall. Plus, who got a game ball out of the CCIW? And the NESCAC? What were the interesting stats of the week, and who was having fun in Region 1, pulling through in Region 2, what's to see in the 3, who's looking for more in the 4, showin' some drive in the 5 and got something to fix in the 6? Plus, how are the Top 25 voters looking at Hardin-Simmons? Patrick and Greg tackle that and more in this week's podcast. The D3football.com podcast is a weekly in-season podcast by Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas, which was started in 2007. Welcome to Episode 109 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. Before we go conference-by-conference (at 2:00), we address the newest team in Region 5 -- just a little program called SALISBURY -- and why we think they were moved into this region from the South and what it means for the region moving forward. Then we proceed with the rest of the region, in order: AEC (at 4:50) Cabrini won 31 games last year but will need to replace their best player Immaculata has a ton of talent back and is looking like the favorite Marymount can be counted on to contend atop this conference Marywood leads the rest of the pack Centennial (at 11:10) Can we just have A NORMAL SEASON IN THIS CONFERENCE ALREADY?! Franklin & Marshall has the most talent back of last year's contenders and will obviously be motivated Johns Hopkins will have a lot of new faces but we know they can be really good Swarthmore is still very talented despite losing half their team to Villanova (slight exaggeration) We could see a lot of moving and shaking up and down the rest of this conference with some coaching changes and intriguing talent on every other team CSAC (at 27:45) Well, well, well, look at Wilson winning 31 games, we love to see it Keystone is always something of a mystery but it's cool that now they have real competition in this conference Landmark (at 34:20) What does the encore look like for Catholic after the best year in program history? Scranton, Moravian and Elizabethtown all have some legit top-end talent but will need a lot more depth to step up to challenge the Cardinals MACC (at 43:15) Lebanon Valley has climbed to the top of this conference in a hurry and has a ton of exciting talent back, even with their top two arms from the '22 team gone York (PA) is always good but have a ton of offense to replace We conclude (at 53:50) with our player and pitcher of the year picks, and our teams to beat. Welcome to Episode 87 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. It's time to talk about the Mid-Atlantic -- well, half of what we've been used to being the Mid-Atlantic. We discuss (at 1:17) the changes to the region from last season before previewing all the favorites by conference. In order: AEC (at 3:57) Marymount won the first ever AEC title and look primed to defend their title Centennial (at 11:05) Johns Hopkins is loaded again but will be tested even more with a full schedule and traditionally ridiculous SOS Swarthmore is back and we're excited to see if they can challenge Hopkins immediately after a full year off F&M, Haverford, and Washington College can all be expected to be in the mix CSAC (at 32:17) Keystone runs this conference and probably always will... ...but could Wilson actually make a run at the Giants? We'd love to see it! Huge shoutout to Alexia Jorge at St. Elizabeth Shoutout to brand new program Rosemont Landmark (at 40:30) Scranton won it all last year and has some exciting young talent returning Catholic seems primed to take a huge step forward with some bona fide All-Region talent MACC (at 47:30) York (PA) is gonna be FASCINATING with two All-American sluggers that might combine for 40 HR but a TON else to replace Lebanon Valley could definitely challenge the Spartans, though We conclude (at 56:48) with our player and pitcher of the year picks, and our teams to beat. Ross Filtch, a Le Moyne midfielder scored both the game tying and eventual game winning goals for the Dolphins over host Pace. #2 Tampa had a bit of a scare put into them against undefeated Lynn, but walked away with a 7-6 win. Caleb Kueber and Devin Pipher went off for Mercyhurst, Kueber putting up 5 goals and 5 assists and Pipher chipped in 4 goals and 4 helpers. Lenoir-Rhyne bounced back nicely after suffering their first loss in 13 outings against Wingate earlier in the week. They beat up on Lincoln Memorial on Saturday 18-6. Season 1 will close on a high note with Episode 20, featuring Coach Mark Evans. I couldn't be prouder to present a guest who has brought so much to the game and the lives of those he touches.Coach Evans is currently serving as the Head Football Coach and a School Counselor for Manheim Township HS in Pennsylvania. In 2019, Mark coached the Blue Streaks to their fourth undefeated regular season in school history! Over the past three season, Coach Evans has led the team to an impressive 33-5 record enroute to three consecutive Section 1 Championships and one District 3 Championship.Amazingly, Mark didn't begin his football journey until his Senior year at Cedar Crest HS in Lebanon, PA! Upon graduation, Mark attended Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, where he honed his skills and gained valuable playing time, earning All-Conference honors as a Sophomore. Although he was offered several major Div 1 scholarships, he chose to attend the University of Miami and play for Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson. While Mark was earning a BA in History/Education, he was blessed to play on both the 1987 & 1989 National Championship teams at Miami.Mark began his coaching career as a GA at Shippensburg University, while earning a Masters in Education/Secondary School Counseling. He was eventually hired by his HS Alma Mater as a school counselor, while he simultaneously coached offensive line at Lebanon Valley College. After four years at Lebanon Valley, Mark was offered the opportunity and accepted the Head Coach job at Eastern Lebanon County HS (ELCO) and was the Head Football Coach and a school counselor there for 14 years. Mark's perineal success at ELCO landed him the job at Manheim Township, where he has continued to successfully build tradition!Throughout his career, Coach Evans has held a variety of positions that also serve the great game of football. He is a past President of the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association and has been either Head or Assistant coach on numerous All-Star Teams and Bowl Games. As if that's not enough, Mark is also a devoted husband and father of three, all of whom he has coached!Intro music "Next Level" used under license by Composer Rujay Torres.
Day 72 of the podcast, reading Joshua 12-14 NET, read along at: https://netbible.org/bible/Joshua+12-14/ This is day 72 of our journey. Today, we see a list of all the kings who were defeated by Moses (2) and Joshua (31). This is followed by a description of the inheritance of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half Manasseh on the east side of the Jordan. As Joshua prepares to divide up the land on the west of the Jordan, the 85 year old Caleb approaches to remind his leader of God's promise that Hebron would be Caleb's inheritance. He trusts God to help him clear the inhabitants of the region and claim the land as his own. Join me in Joshua 12-14 as the people are beginning to settle down. Key verses: Joshua 12:7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the Israelites defeated on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal Gad in the Lebanon Valley to Mount Halak on up to Seir. Joshua assigned this territory to the Israelite tribes, Joshua 13:32 These are the land assignments made by Moses in the rift valley plains of Moab east of the Jordan River opposite Jericho. Joshua 14:14 So Hebron remains the assigned land of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this very day because he remained loyal to the Lord God of Israel. All Scriptures are from the NET.
Head Coach Ralph Clark Prepares for the Final Home Game of the Season
Another great and generous episode this week from Pottsville native (East Side) PAT FLANNERY who had an amazing coaching career, most notably at Bucknell, where he knocked off #2 Kansas, in what was considered the biggest upset in March Madness till this year. Also he won a D3 national championship with Lebanon Valley back in 1994. Real interesting to hear how he almost become a plant manager at Stouffer's chicken in Ohio.

Mike Miller this past season became the winningest men's basketball coach in Alvernia University history. In 13 seasons, he is 236-118 with six conference titles and six NCAA Division III tournament berths. The men’s basketball program and its sustained excellence have been embraced by the Alvernia community. “Most of our games down the stretch and in the playoffs are sellouts -- the kids (his players) like to see that,” Miller says. Miller stresses fundamentals, relying on man defense and running just a few offensive sets. His teams are mentally tough, focused grinders. “You have to find a mentally disciplined kid who is going to work on it,” Miller tells Zeke. “The best thing for us right now is player development. We work on fundamentals. It’s getting tougher and tougher to find that kid who is going to be a basketball junkie and be coachable.” Miller talks about this past season with Zeke when Alvernia was 15-11, losing four of its last seven games including a loss to Lebanon Valley in a MAC Commonwealth play-in-game. “We ran into a lot of injuries last season,” Miller tells Zeke. Miller played for Lloyd Wolf at Holy Name and then was an assistant under Jim Gano, Rick Binder and Steve Hahn at Reading High. Miller took his first head coaching job at Kutztown High and left after one season to be the Reading head coach. He coached Donyell Marshall, who became an All-American at Connecticut and had an18-year NBA career. He now is the head coach at Central Connecticut. At Alvernia the past two seasons Miller coached Donyell’s son, Marquis Marshall, the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year this past season. “Donyell and Marquis are very much alike – very coachable, skills, good hands and loving to play,” Miller tells Zeke. “But Donyell is 6-11 and Marquis is 6-5.” Speaking of fathers-sons, Miller coaches his son Mike, a 6-2 guard who will be a senior next year. “I didn’t have to push him to do anything -- he’s been around the game all his life,” the elder Miller shares with Zeke. After Miller left Reading High in 1994 with a 145-31 record, he spent 10 seasons as an Alvernia assistant to Jack McCloskey before succeeding him at Alvernia. “I’m doing what I love to do and get paid to it; it can’t get better than that,” Miller tells Zeke.

It's time to discuss "The End of Religion!" Not only that but Jeff Robbins give us four theses on the radical theology of the future. Robbins is a professor of religion and philosophy at Lebanon Valley College, infamous radical theologian & the reigning "Best Hair in the Humanities" champion. Robbins returns to the podcast as one of four lectures tackling the 'end of religion' as part of a series partnering with the religion department of Villanova University. The four lectures include Jeffrey Robbins, Jack Caputo, Aaron Simmons and Merold Westphal. If you dig what Jeff is up to then check out his previous interviews here on HBC where we discuss The New Materialism and his guide to advent. Also be wise and look at all these EPIC texts he has written. There is no reason not to own and read Religion, Politics, and the Earth: The New Materialism. It's delicious reading.
