Where is your bullseye - the center of your heart, passion, and calling? In this episode, Jeff and Jake discuss: Lessons from a childhood around the firepit. Business and opportunities in every stage of life. Serving a God of abundance.Letting God's lamp light your next step. The importance of setting and holding boundaries with yourself. Key Takeaways: Working with kids and teens is not a 1-week thing. It is 52 weeks out of the year. Giving does not have to be prescriptive. What breaks your heart? Use that. Fundraising isn't about the money, it's about the heart of the giving partner. It is spiritual before it is mechanical.Be disciplined without haste. Rhythms of rest are necessary. There is always going to be more work to be done, but never once does the Bible say “Jesus ran.” "I don't know about you and your 20s, but for me, I wanted a beacon for the next 200 steps. I didn't want a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, right? But the beauty of that is He gives us that lamp and it's just enough light for the next step and the next step and the next step." — Jake Bland Episode References: C12: https://www.joinc12.com/Halftime Institute: https://halftimeinstitute.org/Pursuing God's Will Together: A Discernment Practice for Leadership Groups by Ruth Haley BartonThe Council: A Biblical Perspective on Board Governance by Gary G. We often anchor relational discipleship in Christ's incarnation, but is that the best biblical and theological foundation? In what ways might “Incarnational Ministry” have shaped the way we think about the Incarnation, rather than it being the other way around? For this reason, it's important to get clear on the doctrine of the incarnation as we evaluate the biblical heart of relational ministry. Discussion How did this question get on your radar and what motivated you to sink your teeth into it? When people talk about “Incarnational Ministry,” what do they tend to have in mind, and what's the typical argument for it sound like? Could you walk us through the doctrine of the incarnation and share your hesitations about continuing with “incarnational ministry” language? Is this just splitting hairs over nitpicky theology or is there something really at stake? What do you propose instead? Andy McDaniel... Leader... Ripple... Tsunami! What is a tsunami? A tsunami is a series of extremely long waves caused by a large and sudden displacement of the ocean, usually the result of an earthquake below or near the ocean floor. This force creates waves that radiate outward in all directions away from their source, sometimes crossing entire ocean basins. Andy McDaniel was born and raised in poverty in Alabama, USA (or Bama as he would say). He was 1 of 5 children. In high school, a girl he liked invited him to a Campus Life Club, which is a division of Youth For Christ. That was the first RIPPLE. This young lady had no idea that she had awakened a sleeping Giant of a Leader! She simply did the right thing. His Campus Life Director led him to Jesus and discipled him... RIPPLE #2 has now begun! Andy feels called to Campus Life Ministry with YFC and thus the ripple becomes an EARTH SHAKING event that has occurred, but no one has yet identified. He becomes a Campus Life Coordinator for Clearwater and later Orlando and that starts a quake in me (Doug) and my ministry. When a Tsunami begins it can't help but to take everything and everyone around it with them. Executive Director, (now Andy) calls the shots in Miami, Nashville, Grand Rapids, and Miami for a second time! People he has led to Jesus and the young men and women he has trained to be leaders are all over the USA and the World. Now people not only see, but feel and know the Tsunami effect cannot be stopped. 36 years in Youth For Christ and 15 years in Moriah Ministries, Andy has done his good works that God planned in advance for him to do in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:10) His wife Valerie, his 3 children, and many grandchildren know this Tsunami of a leader well. He has now gone to heaven and waiting to see all that God has done yet to come. You are the man Andy... I love you my brother! _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? Every year over 700,000 teens are referred to the juvenile justice system. YFC wants to reach teens wherever they are and their Juvenile Justice Ministry is doing just that. “I came that you might have life in ALL of its Abundance.” - John 10:10 Volunteers and student leaders… train them and educate them regularly on what is expected and consistently remind them of God's vision through you for themselves and your student ministry. During my time as a student minister, we would take our volunteer staff to various trainings hosted by student focuses groups (YPS, SLU, YFC, FCA etc.) and a few weeks before the school year would start, we would have one weekend for training at a special location (beach, mountains, etc.) with our volunteers and their families. That was the best, but one year I decided to change it up! At that time you could park at any of the Disney World hotels for free and and hold impromptu sessions in the lobby or on the outside of the property. I loved the Animal Kingdom Lodge, with the outdoor fire pits, rocking chairs, all while being surrounded by wild African animals roaming the zoo like setting onsite. If you knew someone working there, in upper management, you could even get a special room set up in the lobby or a special meeting room. Larry Stephens With CRU (episode 140 on the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast), came to train our volunteer staff and it was beyond amazing! Another time we used Disney University, because of Don Levonious (episode 06 on the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast). He was the Executive who was in charge of the University (yes it is an actual University). Several of his staff were Christians who were Professors at the University of Central Florida, UCF, and Valencia State College. They and Don became the trainers for our volunteer training weekend. Yes, living near Disney World and the ocean has its perks. However… wherever you live has its perks also! You just have to be willing to interact with your community, pay it forward, and the world around you that God is using will open up. _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? Does discipleship look the same in every culture? How does it look different? How has globalization made things similar? Is discipleship a program? A relationship? Or both? How do we disciple those who may come from a different background than us? These are just some of the questions that come into our minds whenever we talk about the subject of discipleship in our modern world with special guest Ajith Fernando.Ajith serves as Teaching Director of Youth for Christ in Sri Lanka after being National Director for 35 years. These days his main responsibilities in YFC are counseling, mentoring, and teaching staff and volunteers. Today feels like a treat! I got to dive in with a former colleague of mine, Ken Allen, who is the Executive Director for Denver Area Youth For Christ. Serving almost three decades within the world of events and ministry, Ken is the real deal! He's a dad of three, a loyal husband and loves the Vikings (although we wont fault him for that;) He's also passionate about reaching young people and doing incredible things to pursue the next generation of youth. While we dive into Ken's story and a handful of reflections of pivotal moments in our lives on today's episode, we also talk about the way God connects with each one of us, how he is a God who comes to us and pursues our hearts right when and where we need it. Youth for Christ works to uncover God's story of hope. I love how they say “ When we welcome God into a pivotal moment, we invite Him to uncover His story of Hope in our lives, and to give life to our story. He, Jesus, is the life in all of our stories” and Ken does such a great job of really sharing how that's possible to see within our own lives. I hope you'll dive into our conversation today and be encouraged along the way! In this episode, Nikou speaks to Marcus Black, a fellow Breakfast of Champion, a man with a heart of gold and an inspiring soul who’s on a mission to impact millions of lives globally. If you’ve listened to previous podcasts and you love the content and conversations and they’ve changed your lives for the good, go and share this podcast with at least two friends. People need to hear Marcus’ voice, especially as we’re all juggling lots of things in preparation for the holidays. KEY TAKEAWAYS A big part of my story is my Dad trying to fight to become and find himself. He had a big hole in his heart because of the absence and lack of faith and he tried to fill that hole with all the wrong things: alcohol, gambling, women. Nothing can fill the God-sized hole in your heart except for a spiritual focus and a foundation. At nine years old I was visited by a real monster, not one from the closet or under the bed, but the same one that haunts a lot of you: Anxiety. And this kept happening up to the age of 18 where I manifested one of my worst nightmares: A high-speed car crash where I thought I was about to die without having ever lived. I began to fear death, I internalised the pain and the traumas and bullying around me and I stopped wanting to do what kids do. Look out for that in your kids, if they’re struggling you might feel like you don’t have the answers, but you do. Just being there and caring is enough. Too few people care enough to go back to where they came from and say: “I’ve been there”. Before the car crash, I had faith, but it meant nothing to me. That moment sent me on a journey because I had a lot of questions I wanted answers to. The question was never “why? And “why me?”, it was “what?” and “What is it for”. When I shifted my perspective it opened my eyes. I don’t know why I’m here, but I made a promise to God that I’m going to spend the rest of my days trying to figure out how to love, pour in, support and take care of the people around me. In the wilderness is where you want to throw in the towel and give up, but here’s what I learned about the wilderness: While I felt like I was dying and let behind, the entire time God was there giving me what I needed.’ You don’t have a good relationship if you don’t have quality time and communication. Every day I get outside (and this helps with anxiety) and get into nature, mostly around a body of water, and silence the noise. I feel the breeze on my face, the waves crashing around me and I pray, meditate and talk to God. Then I’m living in the moment. If you’ve been living in a state of depression, it’s probably because you’ve made a choice to loop your nightmares in your mind and play your traumas on repeat and you feel a perpetual state of depression. Anxiety is the opposite, where you think of all the worst situations and possibilities that could happen and you replay those on loop in your mind. These things may never come. The way you alleviate both of those is to live in this moment; yesterday’s gone and tomorrow’s not promised. You have heard the voice of God you just don’t think you have. The faith doesn’t do a good job of the way we present that to people who don’t have that type of faith. God is spirit and his spirit lives in all things. There’s a spirit that you posses and an intuition that you feel, when you’re seeking your higher purpose in the world and your heart is committed, that’s when you’ll hear his voice. If you’re busy, like a hamster on a wheel, you won’t hear it. People haven’t been turned off by It, they’ve been turned off by the people that represent It. People are imperfect and there will be people that represent God’s heart wrong, including religious leaders and teachers. God hasn’t hurt you, people hurt you. The heart of God is love in all things, he wants you to have an abundant life. To understand it, don’t start in the deepest scriptures, start with the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. If your universe revolves around you, that’s the loneliest place in the world to be and is a recipe for heartache, heartbreak and let-down. You feel the greatest when you’re giving back and serving others. People think it’s bad to have questions or doubts. Don’t believe that. No one has all the answers. Many of the closest people to Jesus had questions despite seeing the miracles he performed. It’s not about perfection, this journey’s about direction. BEST MOMENTS ‘Failing isn’t failure, it’s a vital part of the process to becoming everything you’re meant to be.’ ‘Don’t worry about the shots you miss, just stay in the game.’ ‘You’re not defined by any of the things that happen to you. As long as you’re moving forward, you’re good.’ ‘Faith is an anchor. It may not stop you from feeling the elements and getting tossed around, but it tethers you to the ground and keeps you from getting lost.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Marcus Black is a former pastor and current urban missionary providing leadership and mentoring programs to several inner-city schools through YFC international.
