“I am saying: reader, we're going on a journey. You are going to come with me and then I'm pulling them gently into the narrative. And then again, if I'm doing my job, I'm holding them like a hug.” - Andrea Davis PinkneyAndrea Davis Pinkney stands tall at just 4'11”, but she is still somehow larger than life. In her writing, she has what she refers to as “the page one pact,” a commitment to getting her readers' attention right away. As an interviewee, she does the same. Andrea's passion, commitment to adding to the canon of Black kid lit, and desire to inspire all kids to love reading come through from the moment she begins to talk. Drawing deeply from the writing style she honed during her early years in journalism, Andrea's goal is to craft meaningful stories for kids—often about real people—while ensuring that reading is never (ever) a chore. Instead, she strives to make it a journey young readers are eager to go on with her.Andrea Davis Pinkney is a New York Times bestselling author known for her books for children and young adults, including “The Red Pencil,” “Because of You, John Lewis,” “Duke Ellington,” “Let It Shine,” and so many more. She is the winner of many awards, including the prestigious Coretta Scott King Book Award, and a four-time NAACP Image Award nominee. She is also a beloved editor (yes, she has a day job!), a librettist, and an industry leader. The only thing she may not overachieve in is, well, sleep! In this episode, Andrea tells the story of her own introduction to the Civil Rights movement through her parents, explains how her writing career began by winning a contest she never even entered, and how changing a burger into a donut became a matter of journalistic integrity in one of her books. Settle into an uplifting conversation that goes from John-Boy in the Waltons to the iconic Faith Ringgold with the indefatigable Andrea Davis Pinkney!***If you've read her renowned story “Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down,” you've likely noticed her gift for weaving verse-like prose and rhythm into her writing. That style inspired her reading challenge, Rhythm and Muse—a curated collection of stories that celebrate the same lyrical flow and musicality.Learn more and download Andrea's recommended reading list at thereadingculturepod.com/andrea-davis-pinkney.***This episode's Beanstack Featured Librarian is the inspirational Billy Allen, the Branch Manager of Whitney Library in Las Vegas's Clarke County Library District, aka 3KingVisions on YouTube. Colt and David sit down with artist and songwriter Jordan Harvey.  Hailing from South Queensferry, a small town northwest of Edinburgh, Scotland, Jordan Harvey grew up in a working-class environment that also fostered a deep love for music. Harvey lived and breathed music - working in a local recording studio and attending Tech Music School in London, Jordan opened for Simple Minds as a member of the OK Social Club. This experience led to solo shows and an appearance on BBC One's "Let It Shine," a popular UK singing competition.Encouraged by his father to pursue his passion, Jordan moved to Nashville, where he initially couch-surfed and played the graveyard shift at some of the city's most popular honky-tonks. His hard work paid off, landing him a record deal. He gained experience opening for Garth Brooks and performing on shows like "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," "The Late Late Show with James Corden," "TODAY," "The Kelly Clarkson Show," and the internationally acclaimed "Neighbours."Harvey collaborates with some of Nashville's best talents, crafting music rooted in Nashville songwriting but enriched with global influences and personal stories. As a multi-instrumentalist (piano, drums, guitar), Jordan's natural charisma and stage presence shine through his upcoming tour dates and his storytelling.Website: www.jordanharveymusic.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/jordanharveymusicInstagram: www.instagram.com/jordanharveymusicTwitter: www.twitter.com/jordanharvey___Send us a textSupport the showCheck out our socials and follow us!Facebook: www.facebook.com/TwangTownPodcastInstagram: www.instagram.com/TwangTownPodTwitter: www.twitter.com/TwangTownPodWe would love your support to continue to bring listeners amazing content!Cash App: www.cash.app/$TwangTownPodBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2232176/support

Too often our priorities are distorted due to us living outside of our means with our energy, time, and gifts. Overworking ourselves inevitably leads to affecting the overall mental, emotional, and spiritual health of our family. On today's episode of Let It Shine, we're bringing you a conversation from The Glass House between Ben and Lynley Mandrell and Dr. Heidi Warner.Dr. Heidi Warner graduated with her undergraduate degree in psychology and writing from Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana in 2002 and her doctorate in clinical psychology in 2009 from Bowling Green State University, Ohio. Her commitment to supporting people on their journey through hardships comes from a personal Christian faith and her own journeys through difficult times.   Dr. Heidi Warner challenges us to redefine success, grow in the knowledge of our boundaries, and to ask our family the hard questions. Hope with God... with Andrew and Wendy Palau

Are you afraid to stand out? Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” We cannot live light-filled lives in our society without standing out, without people noticing. Your faith should make a difference in how you live your life. It's important to remember that Jesus did not say to live our lives in such a fashion that people will see our good deeds and say what marvelous, outstanding people we are. A lamp does not call attention to itself. Embrace the light you have as a follower of Jesus and let your light magnificently shine through good works and bold evangelism. This is Andrew Palau. Today on the Glass House we are surprising you with a really special Friday episode.  At Lifeway we have some really fantastic podcasts that we want to make sure you know about.  Angie Elkins is our producer on the Glass House, but she also has her own show called Let It Shine.  Lynley has been a co-host with her this season and they had a really interesting conversation around family rhythms.  We are sharing it with you today.  Make sure you check out Let It Shine and give it a follow too.  We think you'll love it. From Angie: As a mom of three kids, one of my favorite things to do is hear from other moms what's working and not working for them. I love hearing about the rhythms, routines, and habits that different families have creatd and formed to help them build the home and family they desire to have. One of my favorite people to talk about this topic with is Lynley Mandrell. Lynley is one of the most intentional and strategic people I know, so when it comes to habits and routines, she's the perfect person to talk to! In fact, Lynley cohosts The Glass House Podcast with her husband, Ben, and they have an entire episode on the topic of family values, rythyms, and routines! We know that no two families are the same and certainly none of us are perfect! We hope this episode encourages you and inspires you to make small changes to be intentional in building the family and home you know God wants you to have! On Fridays in April, we're dropping an extra episode to make sure you know about some other Lifeway podcasts that we think you would enjoy. Today, we're sharing an episode of Let It Shine with Angie Elkins and Whitney Capps on tending the temple versus body positivity. Body positivity is a social movement that promotes a positive view of all bodies, regardless of the shape, size, weight, and so forth. But we want to take it deeper. Yes, we can accept our bodies the way they are to an extent, but Angie and Whitney are here to talk about the fact that we also have a responsibility to our bodies.  Angie and Whitney have a vulnerable conversation about their own unique journeys, the complexities of our bodies, the messages we tell ourselves about them, and how we function in them as temples of the Holy Spirit.  Go follow Angie and Whitney on Instagram and share your thoughts on body positivity. When Mr. T threatens to beat him up, Rocky leads him to Jesus and together they scare away their real enemy, the devil. ”You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. Throughout chapters in Psalms and other passages scattered through the Bible, we see people using their entire body to worship God. Whether it's dancing undignified in the streets, wearing sackcloth and ashes, or falling on their face, we see the people of God have bodily responses to the Spirit of God. But even as we read about it, are we that comfortable, or are we that surrendered, to use our entire body for the worship of God? On today's episode, Illuminator Tiffany Casey and I discuss this topic of whole body worship. I hope this episode challenges you next time you're in worship. I pray that we can all be filled with boldness for Christ to pour out our all, just as He did so graciously for us!Links: Connect with AngieTo sign up for the Let It Shine newsletter, click HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page.
