Margaret Tudor was the eldest daughter of King Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth of York and the elder sister of King Henry VIII. Margaret witnessed some of the most significant moments in her father's later and her brother's early reigns. A story filled with political intrigue, personal tragedy, and drama, Margaret has been largely left on the sidelines in later interpretations of Tudor history. Seen as insignificant at best and whiney and manipulative at worst, historian Linda Porter's latest book, The Thistle and the Rose: The Extraordinary Life of Margaret Tudor looks to remedy that legacy and bring to light the truly remarkable life of Margaret Tudor. Dr Linda Porter is a historian and author who has just released her sixth book, the thistle and the rose - the extraordinary life of Margaret Tudor. She joins me today for a discussion all about King Henry VIII's older sister, who reigned as Queen of Scotland beside her husband King James IV. Margaret weathered many storms, including the difficulty of her first husband going to war against her native homeland, and then the disaster of her second and third marriages respectively. Margaret does however have a major legacy, one still extremely present in the British identity today, and in Linda's book she explores this fascinating character who for too long has been all but overlooked.

Who was King Charles II? As a controversial new drama-doc portrays him as a brutal avenger of his father's killers, Paul and Miranda go in search of the real Charles. With guest historians Linda Porter and Charlotte White as expert witnesses, we revisit Charles's childhood, his tumultuous experience of Civil War upheavals and years in exile, and his surprisingly conciliatory return to take the throne.  Charles II is a larger-than-life figure renowned for his loose living and numerous mistresses. But he was also a champion of the sciences and patron of the arts. Perhaps more than anything else, this most enigmatic of kings was a true political survivor. Linda Porter has published many books on the period including ‘Royal Renegades', about the children of Charles I, and ‘Mistresses' about the women Charles II had relationships with.  Charlotte White is an author and podcast presenter who wrote the chapter on Charles II for Iain Dale's recent ‘Kings and Queens' book and is currently writing about Barbara Villiers, Charles II's long-standing mistress. '1666 and All That' is presented by Paul Lay and Miranda Malins. The producer is Hugh Costello. Original music is by George Taylor. The episode was mixed by Sam Gunn.

Linda Porter studied history at the University of York and spent the early part of her career lecturing in the United States before changing paths to work in public relations at BT. Since leaving BT nearly fifteen years ago, she has written five books on influential but often misunderstood figures in early modern British history, including Mary I and Katherine Parr. In this episode, she discusses her newest book, a study of Charles II, his mistresses, and the making of the modern British monarchy.

According to John Evelyn, the great diarist, Charles II was ‘addicted to women’. Charles' court is infamous for tales of licentiousness and promiscuity, and I was thrilled to be joined by Linda Porter who introduced me to Charles' impressive list of mistresses. There was Frances Teresa Stuart, ‘the prettiest girl in the world’, Barbara Villiers, an ill-tempered courtier, ‘pretty, witty’ Nell Gwynn, Moll Davis, who bore the last of the king’s fifteen illegitimate children and Louise de Kéroualle, the French aristocrat – and spy for Louis XIV. Trapped in the middle of it all was Queen Catherine, the Portuguese princess, who was far from the childless, forlorn and humiliated figure we have come to imagine. Linda argues that she was likeable and resilient, and a leading cultural figure of the day. More than 100 million Americans struggle with chronic pain, according to one Institute of Medicine estimate, at an annual cost of as much as $635 billion in treatment and lost productivity. Further, the misuse of potent opioid painkillers, while increasing risk of addiction and abuse, can confuse the conversation around appropriate chronic pain management. This Forum brought together a panel of experts to discuss the causes, treatment and impact of chronic pain, exploring the neuroscience behind the pain experience. The panelists examined how clinicians can best serve their patients, highlighting the recommendations of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' recent National Pain Strategy. The Forum also looked at myriad pain management options, including marijuana and mindfulness meditation. And panelists examined relevant pain care policies, including prescription monitoring program regulations, drug development and funding for research. Part of The Dr. Lawrence H. and Roberta Cohn Forums, this event was presented jointly with The Huffington Post and in association with Harvard Health Publications on November 10, 2016.
