Billion-kroner deal set to kick-start Norwegian green ship upcycling adventure

A visionary agreement between Höegh Autoliners and green industry pioneer Nordic Circles launches a national project that will revolutionize the handling of decommissioned ships. Using Norwegian technology, labor, and industry, old ships will be upcycled in Norway into certified building materials - without melting, without export, and with up to 97% lower emissions to create green ship upcycling. Nordic Circles and Höegh Autoliners are announcing the agreement on the Blue Talks stage at Nor-Shipping, in front of maritime leaders from around the world, including high-profile speakers such as John Kerry and Andrew Forrest of Fortescue, underscoring the global significance of the initiative. Norwegian green ship upcycling adventure The project establishes a circular value chain in which decommissioned ships are repurposed as environmentally friendly building materials in Norway. The agreement covers up to eight ships from Höegh Autoliners, to complete the first upcycling in 2026. These eight ships alone could reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry by 100,000 tons of CO2. "We aim to be the greenest in deep-sea shipping and have set a net-zero target by 2040. That's why we're building the world's largest and most environmentally friendly car carriers and investing in making green ammonia a viable fuel already from 2027," says Sebjørn Dahl, COO of Höegh Autoliners. "With this agreement, we ensure sustainability from cradle to grave and lay the foundation for a new green industrial adventure in Norway. We are extremely proud of that." The agreement is worth NOK 1.3 billion. The first vessel is scheduled for decommissioning at AF Offshore Decom in Vats. Norway's Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, will comment on the agreement at the Maritime Bergen stand (C04-33) at Nor-Shipping on Wednesday 3 June from 11:15 to 12:00. There will be interview opportunities with Höegh Autoliners, Nordic Circle and the Minister. Norway as a green industrial leader in Europe Globally, the construction industry accounts for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, with steel being one of the largest contributors. That's why the core of the project is simple: Steel should not be exported and melted down - it should be reused in Norway and Europe. Norwegian shipyards and the steel industry are being developed into a competitive alternative to Turkey, which currently holds the EU's only large-scale ship recycling capacity. The result is mass-produced steel with minimal emissions, under commercial terms. The project is already supported by the full range of Norwegian public funding instruments through the Green Platform initiative. The founders of Nordic Circles are behind the initiative and lead the consortium. AF Offshore Decom is the main contractor. Participants include leading companies from across the value chain, such as Statsbygg, the municipalities of Oslo and Bergen, Skanska, Green Yard, Equinor, DNB, and SINTEF. "This is circular economy at its best - managing to build a sustainable industry from what we used to export as hazardous waste to Asia. The eight ships will save society around 100,000 tons of CO2 and pave the way for mobilizing shipyards and shipping companies across Europe," says John Jacobsen, CEO of Nordic Circles and Oppsirk. Unlocking a global potential Norway has the fifth largest merchant fleet by value, and when including the EU's share, we see a market potential covering 45% of the world's merchant fleet. A doubling in decommissioning assignments is expected, driven by new climate regulations and an aging fleet. Along the Norwegian coast, the maritime industry has developed seven EU-approved shipyards capable of decommissioning and upcycling. Among them, AF Offshore Decom at Vats is considered the world's most environmentally friendly decommissioning facility. All Norwegian yards have additional capacity, and several are equipped to handle large vessels. This agreement is therefore the first ...

Nikdo nezpochybňuje, že ta italská firma v Itálii postavila spoustu dálničních úseků. Reference na to měla. There are places where we feel calm, and others that make me feel ill at ease. And all of those feelings have a body sense to them as well. Heart rises or decreases. I sweat more or less. My chest feels tight or relaxed.  Cortisol, adrenaline, norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, and other neurochemicals and hormones are released and coursing through my body as I experience places. And many of these hormones and neurochemicals being released into my blood stream I have little control over. My brain-body reacts to environmental stimuli and biochemistry does its thing.Buildings may make me feel certain way, induce certain emotions, that we may think are just about your thoughts, brain activity, but at the core, our body too is in a relationship with conditions in the environment. We feel architecture with our bodies, we don't just intellectually experience them in our heads. The experience of buildings, and our emotional reactions to them, is as much a ‘bottom-up process' - our body's sensory processes taking in stimuli from the environment - as a ‘top-down' process – our brains processing that sensory information and making decisions about who we should behave in response to them. Our bodies and brains are in continual dialogue with the world around us. In fact, through a process of neuro plasticity, our brains are wired partly in response to our experiences. Yes we are hard wired through our millions of years of evolution to have what we consider innate responses to the environment and then there are those neuronal connections that area direct result of experiences in the here and now. As you listen to this podcast, your brain is creating new wiring shaping the neural pathways that allow for learning and behaviors. And as we repeatedly experience something, those pathways are reinforced facilitating understanding. Those pathways recognize patterns in our experiences, and they are codified so that when we experience them again our brains are not continually trying to decipher every element anew. If it weren't for our brain's ability of recognize patterns and anomalies in them, we would live a life of extreme ground hog day and would likely be immobilized with the processing necessary to analyze every element we encounter every moment of every day. Over millions of years some of these patterns have become deeply ingrained in our neurobiology. They are part of our brain structures that allow us to react instinctually. You might say that some of them operate ‘below the radar' of our conscious awareness. But because they are not front row center in our awareness doesn't mean that they don't have an influence of our mindbody state.Colors, lighting, materials, geometries, visual patterns and spatial arrangements, to name of few, have an effect on us. We might not necessarily pay attention to these elements of our environment as we move through it, but they have an effect on us. We may not consciously feel the influence of these things, but the effects are there, nevertheless. Acute angles, loud sounds, bright fluorescent lights, certain colors and texture patterns, repetitive and banal patterns, things devoid of detail and out of scale with our human body all have an effect on our sense of well-being. University of Waterloo cognitive neuroscientist Colin Ellard has worked for more than three decades in the application of psychology and neuroscience to architectural and urban design. His work illustrates the impact of ‘boring buildings' on how we feel and our sense health and well-being. We humans, it turns out, function and feel better in environments of physical and visual intricacy. We seek our variety and complexity, layered environments that pique our curiosity and sense of intrigue. And yet…far too many of our built environments at simply banal.Ellard says the  - “The holy grail in urban design is to produce some kind of novelty or change every few seconds,” “Otherwise, we become cognitively disengaged.”Imagine for a moment what is happening inside our mind-bodies when we live 8 + hours in a sea of detail-less white cubicles under a blanked of fluorescent lights. We might think this is an efficient office space, but we are creating brain numbing environments and at the same time asking people to reach optimal performance in the workplace. We may wish hotels guests a good night sleep on a heavenly bed and then we fill the room with light that completely counteracts the production of melatonin telling our brain that it is still daytime and to stay alert. And… we have built city block after city block of repetitive, banality. Efficient to build, very economical yes, but a boredom inducer for the brain. Now this doesn't mean that every environment needs to be a rollercoaster for the senses nor be pristine and bucolic. In fact, some environments are better because they are well…messier. Charles Montgomery, author of Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design suggest that successful design is about “shaping emotional infrastructure.” Montgomery argues that some of the happier blocks in New York are “kind of ugly and messy.” The energy of New York can be both energizing and exhausting. It would be perhaps unfair to heap the responsibility for inhabitants' psychological and physical well-being entirely on buildings but given that we now spend the overwhelming proportion of our days enclosed in them, it stands to reason that they have a clear effect on how we feel. For whatever it's worth, Aarhus, Denmark is the world's happiest city, according to the London-based Institute for Quality of Life's 2024 Happy City Index. The Institute for the Quality of Life identified five categories it believes have the most direct impact on happiness, including citizens, governance, economy, mobility and environment.Based on these factors, Aarhus, Denmark, achieved the highest score, particularly excelling in governance and the environment. I think Copenhagen also held the title at some point I believe due to its building stock being human scale, detailed and varied engendering intrigue and visual delight. And this is where this episode's guest Natalia Olszewska comes into the story.Natalia went to medical school but always had a fascination with architecture. When on a trip to the Venice Biennale it clicked for her that she could combine both of these interests considering that neuroscience could be linked to how buildings make us feel. The rest as they say is history…Natalia adeptly connects these two realms, striving to improve our built environment by making it more human-centered and conducive to well-being. Natalia is an accomplished researcher and practitioner in the field of neuroscience applied to architecture, specializing in evidence-based and neuroscience-informed design. Her interdisciplinary approach transcends boundaries, allowing her to craft built environments that foster individual well-being across various dimensions - social, psychological, and cognitive. Natalia's co-founding role at IMPRONTA, a consultancy specializing in health and well-being design, underscores her commitment to leveraging neuroscience and applied sciences in architecture. Since 2020, she has also been contributing to the NAAD (Neuroscience Applied to Architecture) course at IUAV University in Venice a city that is most definitely not boring…                 *                                  *                                  *ABOUT DAVID KEPRON:LinkedIn Profile: linkedin.com/in/david-kepron-9a1582bWebsites:  https://www.davidkepron.com    (personal website)vmsd.com/taxonomy/term/8645  (Blog)Email: david.kepron@NXTLVLexperiencedesign.comPersonal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidkepron/NXTLVL Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nxtlvl_experience_design/Bio:David Kepron is a multifaceted creative professional with a deep curiosity to understand ‘why', ‘what's now' and ‘what's next'. Today's podcast is episode 99 and we are going to talk about the challenge of modern contracting. There is no doubt that we are in a world where infrastructure investment is well and truly back in fashion. That's true whether we are transforming our energy future, racing to meet a net zero goals, improving lives and community, protecting the environment, solving the housing crisis or indeed, supporting the government's lofty ambitions for an AI driven, world leading growth agenda,Yes, we hear it all the time: infrastructure investment is key to boosting growth. Yet the question still remains: how do we actually create this new world? The answer of course is contractors - the skills, the ingenuity, and innovation, passion and resource of a pretty unique bunch of folk who, rain or shine, get out there and make it happen. My guest today knows all about the pressures and delights of contracting. Katy Dowding is president and CEO of Skanska UK, one of the UK's leading and most innovative contractors and the UK division of Skanska AB, the £13bn revenue global business based in Sweden.Katy has been with Skanska for a large part of her 30 year career in the industry and has ridden the rollercoaster of boom and bust, feast and famine that has too often characterised the sector throughout that time.So where are we now? Are we moving away from the low margin dog eat dog world? Have we arrived at the new low carbon era of collaboration, quality driven value led outcomes? And critically, are we creating an industry in which the brightest and the best actually now want to work and a sector that is set up to transform the world around us and create the kind of built and natural environment that really will change lives?Let's find out.ResourcesSkanska UK websiteConstruction Leadership CouncilNational Infrastructure Commission Infrastructure and Projects Authority Wates Corporate Governance PrinciplesBartlett School of Sustainable ConstructionConstruction Youth Trust

This is a must-watch episode of “Hoots on the Ground” with No Bullshido as we highlight ‘The Manny Hoyo!' Manny is a Senior Superintendent with Skanska who works in the Boston area and shares how he spreads his gifts and talents to the world. Manny talks about how his upbringing has helped him become a better superintendent in the field. He also talks about being a senior superintendent with anxiety and being introverted, both require a daily battle. Manny dives into his recommendations for a Clemson course titled, “Building High Performing Teams” that Hoots is developing with other leaders within the university. Manny recommends that psychological safety and de-escalating tension would be at the top of the list of topics to cover in that course. Manny and Hoots dive into the hierarchy of construction and both dare to scratch the surface of this real-life concept in the industry. Manny talks about the phrase “command and control” and how there is a place and a time for that philosophy of management, but there are better ways most of the time. Those times and places where command and control matter include safety incidents or owner-strict delivery schedules and processes. Hoots coins “The Manny Rule”: Treat people like you should! Manny also challenges the phrase “hurt people,” as he comes from a hurt background and does everything he can not to spread that hurt. Manny remembers a project where he was a young assistant superintendent, and he helped come up with a much better plan to move a 22,000lb masterpiece of a painting. This painting was a Fresco painting of the men and women who built the museum that Manny's team was renovating. Instead of relocating the painting using rollers, Manny's idea of moving it with a crane proved to be the smart way to put less stress on the wall. Manny talks about the environment that was created around him that allowed him the courage to speak up in the moment with that idea. Manny says, “Be a croissant, not a bagel!” Tune in to find out exactly what that means. Hoots questions if we are starting to discuss Emotional Intelligence!?! Comment below and let us know if that's what we got into! As Manny sails boats in his free time, Hoots asks him to better understand how sailing relates to scheduling and Lean Construction. Manny and Hoots close the podcast with a quick discussion on “respect for people” and what the phrase means. Manny also shouts out Chris Kelly, one of his construction idols, who taught him the most within the industry. And don't use the phrases “I, me, or mine” or “progress over perfection” around Manny. Looking forward to the feedback from his podcast with this Master Builder, Manny Hoyo!   ABOUT HOOTS ON THE GROUND PODCAST: The Lean Builder's absolutely, positively NO Bullshido podcast. Join Host Adam Hoots and his guests as they dig deep into the topics that are relevant to those of us who “get it”: the men and women with the dirty boots, the ones who work in the field, doing the hands-on business of construction each day.
