In this wide-ranging interview, first published in 2021, Jeremy Lent discusses his fascinating new book Web of Meaning which combines findings in cognitive science, systems theory and traditional Chinese and Buddhist thought, to develop a framework that integrates both science and meaning in a coherent whole. Jeremy discusses what he sees as an essential problem at the heart of our current worldview: how man is separated from nature which is seen purely as a resource. He highlights a very different perspective, common to many indigenous peoples, how we are interrelated, not just all humans related to each other, but seeing all of the living earth around us all of life as being our relations. Jeremy also shares his long standing criticisms on the structure of the modern corporation and its role in society, in light of the recent Shell climate litigation, and the election of new directors to the board of Exxon, instigated by a small activist investor-which has been called the oil industry's “Black Wednesday.” Jeremy is an award winning author and founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering a worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the earth. His writings investigate the underlying causes and the patterns of thought that have led our civilization to its current sustainability crisis. The Patterning Instinct is a cultural history of humanity's search for meaning, traces the deepest dark of foundations of our modern worldview. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 As our civilization careens toward a precipice of climate breakdown, ecological destruction, and gaping inequality, people are losing their existential moorings. Our dominant worldview tells us we're split between mind and body, separate from each other, and at odds with the natural world. This worldview has passed its expiration date: it's based on a series of flawed assumptions that have been superseded by modern scientific findings. In this talk, author Jeremy Lent will discuss themes from his new book, The Web of Meaning, revealing how another worldview is possible—based on our deep interconnectedness with all of life. Showing how modern scientific knowledge echoes the ancient wisdom of earlier cultures, the presentation weaves together findings from modern systems thinking, evolutionary biology, and cognitive neuroscience with insights from Buddhism, Taoism, and Indigenous wisdom. --- Jeremy Lent, described by Guardian journalist George Monbiot as “one of the greatest thinkers of our age.” He is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization's existential crisis and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. His work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization's existential crisis, and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. In his own words, his work: “has been a journey of many years, during which I dedicated myself full time to deep research in disciplines such as neuroscience, history, and anthropology, and to exploring the great traditions of Buddhism, Taoism, Neo-Confucianism, and Indigenous wisdom.” In this conversation with Helena Norberg-Hodge, Jeremy unpacks many of the assumptions and world views that underpin modern society's destructive trajectory. Jeremy Lent returns to The Commonwealth Club to discuss the ideas in his new book, which weaves together the latest scientific findings with age-old philosophical insights to show how some of our most ingrained beliefs about human nature and the world are mistaken. Who am I? Why am I? How should I live? These are some of the oldest questions humans have grappled with. Our modern, high-tech society, having grown up in Darwins' shadow, assumes that humans are hardwired for selfishness, that we are separate from nature and so can exploit it, that we do best when left alone to pursue our own individual goals. Lent argues that the latest scientific research begs to differ, and that those ingrained but faulty beliefs—which got started in the 17th century and have since been updated with ideas like the “selfish gene”—underlie the environmental and social unraveling now threatening our very survival. Lent not only challenges outmoded beliefs, he also invites us to consider a new way of thinking about ourselves and the world that is both intellectually sound and spiritually vibrant. He weaves together the latest research in neuroscience and evolutionary biology with Buddhist, Taoist, and Indigenous wisdom, and shows how these seemingly disparate streams of thought are not only eminently compatible, but are the key to facing the existential problems of the 21st century. In our modern, high-tech society we may seem to have the answers. After all, hasn't science shown that humans are hardwired for selfishness? That we are separate from nature (which is ours to exploit)? That we do best when left alone to pursue our own individual goals? In his new book, “The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe,” award-winning author Jeremy Lent answers with a resounding “no”—not because he doesn't like these conclusions, but because the latest science shows them to be false. His previous book The Patterning Instinct was about deeper patterns of political and cultural developments.  This conversation was based upon his new book called 'The Web of Meaning' which is all about integrating science and traditional wisdom. He is also the founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute. Liology is a word made up from the Chinese word “li,” which means “the organizing principles” and “ology” which is the Greek-derived word for “study.”  So liology means “the study of the organizing principles.” We (quite literally) talked about life, the universe and everything, including: The difference between eastern and western perspectives, culture, language and thinking The important distinction between the scientific method and reductionism The fact that meaning is emergent and stems from the interconnection between things (and people) The pros and cons of the rise of mindfulness and it's alter-ego McMindfulness, especially in Silicon Valley How we can embed these ideas in tackling the climate emergency I loved what we said about: The connection between things are as important if not more so than the things they are connecting Life is a 4 billion year rebellion from entropy The most dangerous technology in the world is the limited liability company We need a universal declaration of natural rights To find out more about Jeremy please visit: https://www.jeremylent.com/ http://www.liology.org/ This podcast was produced by Liminal - a collective inteligence community that builds and scales net-zero ventures. (who) have to always stay on the defensive and tired and worried about losing, rather than actually sharing a space with others, where it's not a zero sum game.” The analogy of unraveling the tightly woven rug of our society and structures, to reweave into a better, resilient pattern of meaning. The benefits of a “shift away from a growth-oriented wealth-accumulating world” to “an ecological civilization... founded on connectivity, on the power of symbiosis between humans and non-human nature.”ResourcesThe Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning by Jeremy Lent: https://www.jeremylent.com/the-patterning-instinct.htmlThe Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe by Jeremy Lent: https://www.jeremylent.com/the-web-of-meaning.htmlConnect with Jeremy LentWebsite: www.jeremylent.com Facebook: facebook.com/JeremyRLent Twitter: twitter.com/JeremyRLent Follow WCPGR on Social MediaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhatCouldPossiblyGoRightPodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/buildresilienceInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/buildresilienceLearn more: https://bit.ly/wcpgr-resSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/vickirobin)

Jeremy Lent's new book, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe offers a coherent worldview of deep interconnectedness by integrating ancient Taoist and Buddhist views of humanness and awakening, with a modern scientific, conceptually-oriented view of human capacity. Jeremy makes the case for reigniting lost ethical values that can shift the disconnection that has led humanity to the brink of ecological and societal destruction. We discuss deep intelligence, wise action, how to expand collective concern to include all humans, our animal and plant brothers and sisters, and our planet. Even without its being Lent, the "Five Conspiracies" program sounds, like all your shows, illuminating and provocative. But Lent -- oh my! I'm a big fan of his The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning (2017) is epic in scope. he world is awash in a deluge of dangerous conspiracy theories. One of the most harmful results of these bogus conspiracy theories is that they help deflect people's attention from the real conspiracies that are systematically damaging billions of people around the world, destroying the living Earth, and—if left unchecked—may drive our entire civilization to collapse. Jeremy Lent will explain and analyze 5 real and damaging conspiracies that we all should know about such as: 1) Conspiracy to turn the world into a giant marketplace for the benefit of the wealthy elite, 2) Conspiracy by transnational corporations to turn billions of people into addicts, 3) Conspiracy to plunder the Global South for the benefit of the Global North, 4) Conspiracy to hide the effects of climate breakdown for corporate profit, and 5) Conspiracy to grow the global economy indefinitely, while killing most of life on Earth and risking the collapse of civilization. Produced at KSQD 90.7FM “Our worldview is the set of assumptions we hold about how things work: how society functions, its relationship with the natural world, what's valuable and what's possible. It often remains unquestioned and unstated but is deeply felt and underlies many of the choices we make in our lives.” – Jeremy Lent What shaky foundations could our democratic republic currently be built upon? Do our House and Senate representatives believe “humans are fundamentally selfish” and, therefore, make legislative and funding decisions based on that assumption? Maybe that thinking creates a structural flaw and a new foundation from which to make decisions could be that “humans are fundamentally cooperative?” Could the current Administration be implementing another structural flaw by making policy based on the thinking that “humans are separate from nature?” This flaw seems to be clearly demonstrated by the selling off federal land to oil drilling and by rolling back clean air and water requirements? What federal policy decisions could be made if decision makers based policy on thinking that “humans are an integral part of nature?” These questions and more will be discussed with Jeremy Lent, author of The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Future, based on a simple but compelling theme – culture shapes values and those values shape history. So, how do those shaped values contribute to the culture wars fiercely debated and manipulated in America today? These Eight Graphs Show Why,’ which we delve into in this episode. Jeremy unpacks the underlying assumptions implicit in Pinker’s ideas presented in his work, in particular regarding Pinker’s defense (through cherry-picking of data) of the capitalist neoliberal economic order, and more broadly of the “progress narrative” that justifies (or outright ignores) the widespread ecological devastation implicit in the expansion and maintenance of industrial civilization and the institutions that uphold it. In the later part of this discussion, we discuss the balance of participating in electoral politics while simultaneously recognizing its deep systemic flaws, and the importance of generating viable alternatives that exist outside of the logic and operations of dominant political and economic institutions of our time. This week’s interview is with Jeremy Lent, an author whose writings investigate the patterns of thought that have led our civilization to its current crisis of sustainability. His book, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity’s Search for Meaning, published last year, explores the way humans have made meaning from the cosmos from hunter-gatherer times to the present day. He is founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute dedicated to fostering an integrated worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the earth. Most of humanity’s ailments can be traced back to a mind virus known to some Indigenous cultures as Wetiko. Wetiko is an Algonquin word for a cannibalistic spirit that is driven by greed, excess, and selfish consumption (in Ojibwa it is windigo, wintiko in Powhatan). With Jeremy, we will unpack the history of Wetiko spirit and its relationship to capitalism- the culmination of humanity’s hyper individualistic self destruction. Rooted in history and patterning, Jeremy explores the ancient and primeval patriarchal drive towards violence and destruction, offering us an alternative way forward based on community, collaboration and collective divestment from Wetiko through reembodying intuition and feeling sense.

In this episode, I speak with Jeremy Lent. Jeremy is the author of "The Pattering Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning" and founder and president of the nonprofit Liology Institute. The premise of "The Patterning Instinct" is that culture shapes values, and that values shape history. Through this exploration, Jeremy has examined various cultures and societies and determined the underlying premises of their cultural stories, and how the underlying premises of these stories and metaphors informs how the collective patterns meaning onto the world and their place within it. We discuss the ways, through our understanding of humanity's pattering instinct, how our culture and society can begin to move away from the underlying premises that inform our patterns of meaning and begin to adopt more holistic understandings and relationships with our fellow human beings and life on this planet. We go over the response and underlying premise of Jeremy's widely shared, recently published article "The Dangerous Delusions of Richard Dawkins" published originally in AlterNet and picked up by Raw Story and Salon. We discuss the increasingly irrelevant theory of the "selfish gene" originally proposed by Richard Dawkins, and the reductionist worldview this meme supports, beyond it's biological roots. Jeremy explains why he wrote this piece, and why the article has received the response it has.
