"Within Rajasthan's Raika culture, camels are raised in a system that's cruelty free - the calves are not separated from their mothers, camels walk around and choose their own diets and have a close relationship with humans. It's an alternative model of livestock and food production that has great value. The Raika demonstrate a way of keeping animals that's in tune with the environment and has high animal welfare standards. It should be a model for the rest of the world. Slowly, we are getting to the stage where people are recognising this. Modern India's thinking about livestock needs to be decolonised because India's traditional livestock keeping systems are a treasure. There's enormous heritage value in them and this intangible heritage also creates wealth and has a lot of commercial potential. What's missing is an appreciation of the value of this heritage. I don't regret that I've been here for the last 30 years." - Ilse Kohler-Rollefson, author, Camel Karma talks to Manjula Narayan about her work with the camel herders of Rajasthan, the great health benefits of milk from free-range camels, and why sustainable methods of livestock farming make more sense.
In this interview, Jeremy Lent starts by offering an overview of some key ideas he articulates in his book “The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe.” He emphasizes the importance of generating an alternative worldview based on the understanding of our deep interconnection, and the notion of flourishing, particularly flourishing as an integrated organism. On Ecological Civilization, he invites us to visualize how the world could look like if we changed the dominant underlying operating system of our current civilization from one of extraction and exploitation to one that seeks to set the conditions for all beings to flourish on a regenerative Earth. This means envisioning not just changing one aspect, but everything. He stresses that in order to get on the path to an ecological civilization, we can look at life itself and ecosystems and apply that learning to our human societies, such as by cooperating and working together for mutual benefit. Lent makes the point that deep transformation starts with the recognition that our own ways of thinking need to be questioned and changed.

In this wide-ranging interview, first published in 2021, Jeremy Lent discusses his fascinating new book Web of Meaning which combines findings in cognitive science, systems theory and traditional Chinese and Buddhist thought, to develop a framework that integrates both science and meaning in a coherent whole. Jeremy discusses what he sees as an essential problem at the heart of our current worldview: how man is separated from nature which is seen purely as a resource. He highlights a very different perspective, common to many indigenous peoples, how we are interrelated, not just all humans related to each other, but seeing all of the living earth around us all of life as being our relations. Jeremy also shares his long standing criticisms on the structure of the modern corporation and its role in society, in light of the recent Shell climate litigation, and the election of new directors to the board of Exxon, instigated by a small activist investor-which has been called the oil industry's “Black Wednesday.” Jeremy is an award winning author and founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering a worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the earth. His writings investigate the underlying causes and the patterns of thought that have led our civilization to its current sustainability crisis. The Patterning Instinct is a cultural history of humanity's search for meaning, traces the deepest dark of foundations of our modern worldview. His most recent book is Web of Meaning: integrating science and traditional wisdom to find our place in the universe. He is the founder of the Deep Transformation Network, a global community exploring pathways to an ecological civilization, and the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering an integrated worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the Earth.

Can you imagine the profound impact of searching for meaning during a life crisis?Join us as we speak with Jeremy Lent, author of "The Patterning Instinct" and "The Web of Meaning," about his personal journey of enlightenment and understanding. I met Jeremy when I worked as Interim CEO for the NGO Gaia Education. I was introduced to Jeremy through a fellow friend Daniel Christian Wahl, whom I also met through Gaia Education. After my first meeting with Jeremy, I was left with a feeling of being humble. Here I was, in the room with a great thinker with a mind you want to dive into. I can listen to Jeremy talk for hours. The result of the meeting ended on a professional level with becoming a new Gaia Education program - and I knew I wanted more time together with Jeremy. So when we started our podcast, Jeremy was among the first people I wanted us to talk to. I highly recommend his books: "The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning" and "The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe."They are profound and deep and leave you with several aha moments. One of the thoughts that affected me most strongly was his comment that: "The first thing that humans domesticated was themselves"...In this podcast episode, we explore the evolution of meaning-making in human history, the consequences of living in a disconnected society, and the power of love, kindness, and transformation in promoting change and healing. We dive into the cognitive shifts that occurred as humans transitioned from a nomadic hunter-gatherer existence to a more sedentary agricultural lifestyle and discussed the importance of connectedness, community, and kindness in finding meaning in our lives. As we discuss the implications of the ecological crisis on our civilization, Jeremy shares his insights on hope for a better future and how to begin healing from the deep-rooted conditioning we experience from a young age. Finally, we explore the Deep Transformation Network and the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and choices as we strive for a more connected and meaningful existence. A must listen for every human! Especially if you are going to birth a son in the near future.Circumcision is the most popular medical surgery in USA today. But somehow it got to the point of it being performed for health reasons more that religious reasons. However, the claimed “health benefits” are based on flawed science, and in contrast, circumcision has alarming health and traumatic dangers. But is there valuable ancient wisdom based in this rite of passage that religious and indigenous cultures have been performing for centuries?Or has the essence of these rite of passages been misunderstood? Is circumcision a violation of human rights? or are parents confidently making responsible and informed decisions? Our guest, filmmaker, public speaker and very passionate and active man, Brendon Marotta, made an award winning film: American circumcision, which presents science and opinions from both sides of the decision - to circumcise or not. The film presents religious leaders, doctors, lawyers and human rights spokespeople on both sides. This is one of the most important podcast episodes on the Vital Veda Show, as the act of circumcising or not is a highly influential non-reversible act.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
How do you relate to the winter season? What are the ways that you naturally support your body through this time of colder, darker days? Flavio Santi (Ayuy Yu),is from the Ecuadorian Amazon. Flavio shares his views and insight into the sacred tobacco medicine ceremony and how he sees the need for collective healing. An indepth discussion on the "healing properties of the grandfather tobacco plant medicine" direct from the Ecuadorian Jungle, traditionally cultivated by Flavio's family for generations. He says the spirit of tobacco is protective, cleansing, grounding, as well as transformative. Yachaks (elder wisdom holders, teachers) use fresh or dried tobacco leaves, liquid tobacco infusions, and tobacco smoke (never inhaled) to connect with ancestral spirits, and to heal their patients with profound universal energies. Flavio shares the wisdom of his ancestors and what the prophecy of the grandfathers tell us.Late in the 19th Century, Ayuy Yu (Spirit of the Palm), Flavio Santi's grandfather and leader of his clan in the Shuar tribe, made an ancestral pilgrimage from the Huasaga River in Peru along the forested mountains up through Ecuador to the Putumayo River in Colombia, at that time called Puturuna: ‘People of the Kapok'. Puturuna was an intercultural meeting place of knowledge exchange and spiritual teaching. Along this route, which could take years to complete, the generations of Ayuy Yu's people had planted sacred wayusa plants, as guides, titles, and places of ceremony. The Shuar people drink wayusa tea in the pre-dawn each day, to strengthen the dreams of the people, and of the forest. Some of these trees along the route are now 700 years old.See more at www.lauralee.com

Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 As our civilization careens toward a precipice of climate breakdown, ecological destruction, and gaping inequality, people are losing their existential moorings. Our dominant worldview tells us we're split between mind and body, separate from each other, and at odds with the natural world. This worldview has passed its expiration date: it's based on a series of flawed assumptions that have been superseded by modern scientific findings. In this talk, author Jeremy Lent will discuss themes from his new book, The Web of Meaning, revealing how another worldview is possible—based on our deep interconnectedness with all of life. Showing how modern scientific knowledge echoes the ancient wisdom of earlier cultures, the presentation weaves together findings from modern systems thinking, evolutionary biology, and cognitive neuroscience with insights from Buddhism, Taoism, and Indigenous wisdom. --- Jeremy Lent, described by Guardian journalist George Monbiot as “one of the greatest thinkers of our age.” He is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization's existential crisis and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. His award-winning book, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning, examines the way humans have made meaning from the cosmos from hunter-gatherer times to the present day. His new book, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe, offers a solid foundation for an integrative worldview that could lead humanity to a sustainable, and flourishing future. He is the founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute and writes topical articles exploring the deeper patterns of political and cultural developments at Patterns of Meaning. Kim Wheatley is an Ojibwe Anishinaabe Grandmother from Shawanaga First Nation Reserve who carries the spirit name Head or Leader of the Fireflower and who is Turtle Clan. She has appeared on TV, radio and in many news articles connected to her passion for Indigenous Knowledge sharing. Kim has worked with over 34 First Nation communities, having organized many Indigenous events, and she has authored 4 books, and has received multiple awards. She also volunteers on a variety of boards as an Indigenous Advisor. She also works as a Anishinaabe Cultural Consultant. In this episode, Shane and Kim discuss Kim's way of life and way of knowing. Kim spends much of her time educating people about First Nation wisdom, heritage, and integration into the world. We discuss the historical gap in knowledge about the First Nation peoples and how we can utilize ancient traditional wisdom to make the world a better place for everyone. Kim highlights that there is a strong rise of truths in the world, where people are now getting to write their own stories and tell their truths. We discuss some of Kim's traditional healing systems, governance systems, and way of life as a part of nature - not separate from it. Kim shares some ancient wisdom about balance and harmony - understanding that there is a place in creation for us to be a part of and not apart from nature in order to have a good life. Understanding the seasonal cycles of relationship and responsibility. Understanding that all parts of creation are beautiful and sentient, with a job and a purpose that benefits the greater good. Understanding that the Earth is a life-giver who gives birth to us and everything we need to lead a good, long life. Kim shows us how and where we have lost our way in this world and how we are making decisions that lead to the destruction and damage to our life-giving planet. We can make different choices to change our relationship with nature, hopefully providing some restitution and positive impact to return to a better state of balance and harmony. More of Kim:

In this episode, we explore how listening and learning have emerged as a key component of connecting with community in an authentic way. In this episode, we explore how from the lens of mainstream society, the idea of self-care can be off-putting. It is only when we slow down and see things through an alternate perspective, reminding ourselves that taking care of ourselves is where we can better care for others more effectively, that's where we are reminded to extend grace to each other (and extend it to ourselves!) in a good way. When we can care for ourselves well, we can care for each other even better. This is the power of relationship and connection exemplified. Take our survey! In this episode, we explore the idea that collective trauma requires collective healing. As co-host Briana Matrious so aptly puts it, “The most powerful healing that has happened in my life has been in community with one another.” We explore what that means for us as individuals—both personally and professionally – as we move through these current times together. One of the most potent advice you can give someone is to ask them to go within, or to know themselves. We have all heard the old sayings from eastern philosophy."Go within.""Know thyself."I try in this episode to throw some light on these beautiful sayings. Join me as I walk you through a basic introduction to what it means to go within, what is the ego, what is the self and what are some illusions surrounding them.Jiddu Krishnamurti, or Uncle JK as I fondly call him, used to say, "When I understand myself, I understand you.
