Dr. Bill Smutz: Finding Our Place
Pathfinder Church | August 18, 2024 | AJ MasticOver time, people have defined what it means to be human in different ways (rationality, creativity, ethics and morals). For Christians, we have looked to the Book of Genesis to understand the place of honor we're given in and over creation. But in a world where artificial intelligence is quickly encroaching on territory that once only belonged to us, how do we understand and maintain our uniqueness in creation?Website | https://pathfinderstl.orgOnline Giving | https://pathfinderstl.org/givePodcasts | https://pathfinderstl.org/podcastsFacebook | https://facebook.com/pathfinderstlInstagram | https://instagram.com/pathfinderstlSt. John School | https://stjls.orgContact Us | churchinfo@pathfinderstl.org

As we wake up in this universe, we find ourselves in the midst of a story that is already unfolding. But what is the story about? And how do we find our place in the story? The Bible tells us we're living in God's story. It's the story of a God who is on a mission to glorify His name by redeeming all people. It is a story that began at the dawn of creation and will continue until the renewal of all things. When we discover God's Story and realize what the Story is all about, we can find our place in the story. 6 Acts Creation, Fall, Israel, Redemption, Church, Renewal Act I – Creation Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” From the very beginning, God's heart beats for the entire world. Act II – Fall Genesis 3:15 This Promised Seed will reverse the curse and restore all that has been lost. God's heart still beats for all His lost children, scattered amongst the nations. Act III – Israel Genesis 12:1-3 God is creating a people for Himself. Israel may not have embraced God's missionary call wholeheartedly, but His heart beats nonetheless for the peoples of all nations. Act IV – Redemption John 3:16-17 Jesus is the lamb who takes away the sins, not just of Israel, but of the world! Act V – Church Matthew 28:18–20 The Church is to be a missionary movement, going into all the world to share and show the Good News of Jesus. Act VI – Renewal Revelation 5:9-10, 12-13 God's mission is to glorify His name by redeeming all people for Himself from every nation, tribe, language, people, and tongue who will come alive in joyous relationship with Him through the redemption of His beloved Son by the power of His Spirit. Takeaway: What is your place in the story?
Send us a Text Message. In this episode of We Love Science, Fatu and Shekerah explore a world that few modern-day scientists have explored, the intersection of science and philosophy. Today we are speaking with Dr. Richard Summers, a theoretical biologist and emeritus professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. His career spans from chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine to vice chancellor for research. Richard has also led cutting-edge research to understand how the human body responds to zero-gravity environments, and has even worked directly with NASA. Throughout his career, between his lab research and academic leadership positions, Richard has co-authored more than 300 publications and books. His most recent book is “Science as Natural Philosophy and Finding Our Place in the Universe”. This book explores the rich history of the origins of science as a way of creating our worldview and understanding our place, as humans, in the world–natural philosophy, as it used to be called. The origin story of science is not only about how we as humans observe and experience the world; interestingly, it can also be deeply influenced by religious perspectives, especially during times in history when religious authorities strongly influenced what was accepted in broader society. “We think of science, philosophy, and religion as being completely separate and conflicting schools of thought. My book connects the dots between the scientific perspective and those of philosophy and religion–on a broad scale,” explains Richard. An overarching theme of all three is to have a better experience and understanding of our world. When it comes to writing, Richard believes that good writing just has to flow, and this means writing can be slow, arduous, and often frustrating. However, this also means that it's important to sit and try every day. Listen to the episode to learn more about Richard's work and his book. Tune in to hear Richard explain:The evolution of science from observation to experimentationWhat it means to think of science as a natural philosophy The surprising interconnectedness between science, philosophy, and religionThe strong Mississippi tradition of StorytellingWhat it takes to write a good book about scienceYou can find Richard's latest book here:Science as Natural Philosophy and Finding Our Place in the UniverseReach out to Richard: rsummers@umc.edu If you enjoyed this episode, also be sure to check out:Ep 8: The Pen is Mightier than the Pipette: The WorkEp 23: The Accidental Discovery of Penicillin Reach out to Fatu:www.linkedin.com/in/fatubmTwitter: @thee_fatu_band LoveSciencePodcast@gmail.com Reach out to Shekerah:www.linkedin.com/in/shekerah-primus and LoveSciencePodcast@gmail.com Music from Pixabay: Future Artificial Intelligence Technology 130 by TimMoorMusic from https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Holmes: Hotshot by ScottHolmesMusic
"After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean; from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue. And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized." Acts 18:1-8

Since the last episode's conversation with hannah baer about the Jewishness of therapy, I've been thinking a lot about lineage. When I first decided to do an episode on the topic, I was primarily motivated by wanting a deep sense of admiration for the Jewish pioneers of the field. Their contributions, which, like any minority group, tend to get erased as they are absorbed into the dominant culture, are invaluable and deserve explicit recognition. But our conversation and hannah's original article also helped me connect to something more than claiming therapy's Jewish roots and contributions to global culture. The American myth of being self-made or self-determined tends to alienate us from our lineages, but we are part of them whether we consciously engage with them or not. The history and context of our field matter, even when those histories are messy, ugly, and problematic. Contending with therapy's history opens a dialogue between ourselves and our forebears in ways that move the profession forward and bring us together in solidarity and kinship. And that is a project worth taking on.Listen to the full episode to hear:How the American fantasy of being self-made teaches us to ignore the lineages of our practiceThe importance of pushing back against ahistoricism and divorcing concepts from their contextHow we are in relationship with our lineages, whether we are conscious of it or notWhy critiquing and rejecting what you don't like about the field's lineage isn't enoughHow acknowledging our lineage opens the door to deeper camaraderie and kinshipLearn more about Riva Stoudt:Into the Woods CounselingThe Kiln SchoolInstagram: @atherapistcantsaythat

In this episode, Melissa shares her journey after high school to find her place and purpose in the world. Her employment experiences and career ambitions. Her story is one of perseverance and hope. She expresses the need for autistics to be consistently exposed to different experiences and opportunities. This helps them to figure out what may be the best fit for them. She says independence for autistics requires their parents to allow them to do life their way. There are multiple pathways to finding one's place and purpose in life. Parents must believe in their children's ability to find their way. Autistics may need more time and different opportunities to find their path. Melissa was candid on how parents can be too controlling and struggle to listen and respect their autistic young adult as an individual—respecting that they may have different desires than you. Also, to respect that they may know autism best, so their perspective and voice matter. Melissa continues to advocate for herself and her students. She deeply desires to help autistic people find a career they love and self-realize. As an advocate, she believes in and encourages her students. She emphasizes how parents can support new experiences, listen, and respect their young adult. In our next episode, Melissa will share her internship at the Social Mind Center and her new career.

On Finding Our Place in This Story.
In this wide-ranging interview, first published in 2021, Jeremy Lent discusses his fascinating new book Web of Meaning which combines findings in cognitive science, systems theory and traditional Chinese and Buddhist thought, to develop a framework that integrates both science and meaning in a coherent whole. Jeremy discusses what he sees as an essential problem at the heart of our current worldview: how man is separated from nature which is seen purely as a resource. He highlights a very different perspective, common to many indigenous peoples, how we are interrelated, not just all humans related to each other, but seeing all of the living earth around us all of life as being our relations. Jeremy also shares his long standing criticisms on the structure of the modern corporation and its role in society, in light of the recent Shell climate litigation, and the election of new directors to the board of Exxon, instigated by a small activist investor-which has been called the oil industry's “Black Wednesday.” Jeremy is an award winning author and founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering a worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the earth. His writings investigate the underlying causes and the patterns of thought that have led our civilization to its current sustainability crisis. The Patterning Instinct is a cultural history of humanity's search for meaning, traces the deepest dark of foundations of our modern worldview. His most recent book is Web of Meaning: integrating science and traditional wisdom to find our place in the universe. He is the founder of the Deep Transformation Network, a global community exploring pathways to an ecological civilization, and the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering an integrated worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the Earth.

The Becoming Podcast has been on a short hiatus while I focus on writing my book, but oh what a comeback episode I have for you! This month, I spoke to Toko-pa Turner, who many of you may know as the unofficial patron saint of many of my circles and gatherings because of the sheer number of times I've quoted from the wisdom of her book, Belonging. Toko-pa is a Canadian author, teacher, and dreamworker. Blending the mystical teachings of Sufism in which she was raised with a Jungian approach to dreams, she founded The Dream School in 2001, from which thousands of students have graduated. She is the author of the award-winning book, Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home, which explores the themes of exile and belonging through the lens of dreams, mythology, and nature. This book has resonated for readers worldwide, and has been translated into 10 different languages so far. Her work focuses on the relationship between psyche and nature, and how to follow our inner wisdom to meet with the social, psychological, and ecological challenges of our time. Here's some of what Toko-pa and I talk about in this episode: > The dream that changed Toko-pa's life, causing her to question her career and, ultimately, her identity > How we can court our dreams to support us during times of radical transformation – and the reasons so many of us have a hard time remembering and working with what shows up in our dreamscape > Toko-pa's perspective on the message of Belonging after the divisiveness our society has experienced in the years since it was published > What happened for both Toko-pa and I when we fell out of belonging from the ideologies of the "wellness world" > How to build community when you're under-resourced > "The Big Lie" when it comes to belonging, and how we can reclaim a sense of belonging to the greater family of things, as Mary Oliver so famously wrote

This week Laura talks with award-winning author, lawyer, and strategist Deepa Iyer. Deepa and the organization she works with, Building Movement Project, create building blocks for activist organizations to translate their desires to create change into concrete practices they can implement. These two activists connect on their belief that how we do the work is just as important as what the work is, and that we can't delegate social change work to people in the nonprofit sector or to activists. We all have important roles to play, no matter what our jobs and identities are. They talk about Deepa's upcoming book and how to maintain hope, even amidst all that can feel daunting and overwhelming. In fact, for many years, she was An Unhappy Vet. Despite working in wonderful practices with compassionate mentors, she always felt she didn't fit in. She found private practice draining and felt like a failure for her inability to be “a real vet”. She learned the hard way for two decades, and her mission is to provide veterinary professionals with the tools to find their happiness and to help them be comfortable if they take a nontraditional approach.
