In this interview, Jeremy Lent starts by offering an overview of some key ideas he articulates in his book “The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe.” He emphasizes the importance of generating an alternative worldview based on the understanding of our deep interconnection, and the notion of flourishing, particularly flourishing as an integrated organism. On Ecological Civilization, he invites us to visualize how the world could look like if we changed the dominant underlying operating system of our current civilization from one of extraction and exploitation to one that seeks to set the conditions for all beings to flourish on a regenerative Earth. This means envisioning not just changing one aspect, but everything. He stresses that in order to get on the path to an ecological civilization, we can look at life itself and ecosystems and apply that learning to our human societies, such as by cooperating and working together for mutual benefit. Lent makes the point that deep transformation starts with the recognition that our own ways of thinking need to be questioned and changed.

Can you imagine the profound impact of searching for meaning during a life crisis?Join us as we speak with Jeremy Lent, author of "The Patterning Instinct" and "The Web of Meaning," about his personal journey of enlightenment and understanding. I met Jeremy when I worked as Interim CEO for the NGO Gaia Education. I was introduced to Jeremy through a fellow friend Daniel Christian Wahl, whom I also met through Gaia Education. After my first meeting with Jeremy, I was left with a feeling of being humble. Here I was, in the room with a great thinker with a mind you want to dive into. I can listen to Jeremy talk for hours. The result of the meeting ended on a professional level with becoming a new Gaia Education program - and I knew I wanted more time together with Jeremy. So when we started our podcast, Jeremy was among the first people I wanted us to talk to. I highly recommend his books: "The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning" and "The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe."They are profound and deep and leave you with several aha moments. One of the thoughts that affected me most strongly was his comment that: "The first thing that humans domesticated was themselves"...In this podcast episode, we explore the evolution of meaning-making in human history, the consequences of living in a disconnected society, and the power of love, kindness, and transformation in promoting change and healing. We dive into the cognitive shifts that occurred as humans transitioned from a nomadic hunter-gatherer existence to a more sedentary agricultural lifestyle and discussed the importance of connectedness, community, and kindness in finding meaning in our lives. As we discuss the implications of the ecological crisis on our civilization, Jeremy shares his insights on hope for a better future and how to begin healing from the deep-rooted conditioning we experience from a young age. Finally, we explore the Deep Transformation Network and the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and choices as we strive for a more connected and meaningful existence. Described by Guardian journalist George Monbiot as “one of the greatest thinkers of our age,” Jeremy's work investigates the underlying causes of our civilisation's existential crisis, and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. A former internet company CEO, with a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University and an MBA from the University of Chicago, Jeremy's life has followed an unexpected path, as we'll come to hear, and he has gone on to write two highly acclaimed books. Jeremy is the founder of the Deep Transformation Network, a global community exploring pathways to an ecological civilisation, and the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering an integrated worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the Earth. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 As our civilization careens toward a precipice of climate breakdown, ecological destruction, and gaping inequality, people are losing their existential moorings. Our dominant worldview tells us we're split between mind and body, separate from each other, and at odds with the natural world. This worldview has passed its expiration date: it's based on a series of flawed assumptions that have been superseded by modern scientific findings. In this talk, author Jeremy Lent will discuss themes from his new book, The Web of Meaning, revealing how another worldview is possible—based on our deep interconnectedness with all of life. Showing how modern scientific knowledge echoes the ancient wisdom of earlier cultures, the presentation weaves together findings from modern systems thinking, evolutionary biology, and cognitive neuroscience with insights from Buddhism, Taoism, and Indigenous wisdom. --- Jeremy Lent, described by Guardian journalist George Monbiot as “one of the greatest thinkers of our age.” He is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization's existential crisis and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. This week my guest is Jeremy Lent, who is the author of several books, including The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning, and his more recent work, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find our Place in the Universe. Importantly, a great deal of Jeremy's work addresses many of the topics that are near and dear to our hearts at Singularity, one of which is a sustainable, connected, and prosperous future. However, Jeremy believes that our current approach and worldview are causing humans, and therefore the technology we create, to often lead us in the opposite direction, towards a world of disconnection, destruction, and exploitation. To help us navigate these potential futures, Jeremy provides us with some incredibly well-articulated insights and metaphors that help frame the options that exist before us. In this episode of Systems and Cybernetics I had the pleasure of spending an hour with Jeremy Lent, talking with him about his newest book The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe. Lent is a former Tech CEO, and is founder of The Liology Institute. His previous book The Patterning Instinct prompted The Gaurdian's George Monbiot to comment that “almost every page caused me to rethink what I held to be true.” I'm right there with you George – I had the same reaction to this book. The Web of Meaning offers a compelling foundation for a new story of interconnectedness, showing how, as our civilization unravels, another world is possible. Lent investigates humanity's age-old questions — Who am I? Why am I? How should I live? — from a fresh perspective, weaving together findings from modern systems thinking, evolutionary biology, and cognitive neuroscience with insights from Buddhism, Taoism, and Indigenous wisdom. Jeremy and I had a fun time discussing our favorite systems thinkers from Bateson to Wiener, to Maturana and Macy. We agreed upon our preference for Margulis's cooperation theory — “life did not take over the world by combat but by networking” — over Dawkins's ‘selfish gene'. And how do spirituality and ancient knowledge systems fit into the systems conversation? Lent writes that “…we can define spirituality as seeking meaning in the coherent connections between things, rather than in the things themselves. In this sense, spirituality and systems thinking are intrinsically aligned”. Amazing. I am confident readers will have their own Monbiot reaction and make their own connections — facilitated by Lent's wise insights throughout the book. Listening to this conversation will provide a mere appetizer for readers who want to explore “patterns of sustainable flourishing” and explore questions like what is humanity's role? I encourage diving into Lent's work and asking: “can we complete, through conscious tending, what Tao and Te have generated since life began… to use the unique features of conceptual consciousness to integrate with nature rather than try to conquer her?”. Toward the symbiocene. Just imagine. Kevin Lindsay is a 25+ year Silicon Valley software product strategist and marketer, and graduate student at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Jeremy Lent, described by Guardian journalist George Monbiot as “one of the greatest thinkers of our age,” is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization's existential crisis, and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future.Born in London, England, he received a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and was a former internet company CEO. His award-winning book, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning, explores the way humans have made meaning from the cosmos from hunter-gatherer times to the present day.His new book, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe, offers a coherent and intellectually solid foundation for a worldview based on connectedness that could lead humanity to a sustainable, flourishing future. He is founder of the nonprofit Liology Institute, dedicated to fostering an integrated worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the Earth. He lives with his partner in Berkeley, California. He writes topical articles exploring the deeper patterns of political and cultural developments at his website Patterns of Meaning. In this week's podcast, we explore his most recent paper 'The End of Capitalism' and how our entire economic structure needs to change if we're to address the demands of the moment. From there, we move to the pillars of systemic change and how a shift in the world economy to one of reciprocity over extraction/abuse must be an integral part of the transition to a flourishing, interconnected future. Drawing from indigenous wisdom, and the 'Four R's' described by LaDonna Harris as the foundations of indigenous cultures across the globe, to the concept of fractal flourishing, citizens's assemblies and the crisis in sense-making, we move ever towards a model of how our world could be if we got it right. In episode 23 of Mutations, I talk with Jeremy Lent about his new book: The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe. Lent's newest work proposes an integrated worldview very much in the philosophical spirit of the scholars and teachers we explore on Mutations (integral philosophy, theory, etc.). At the time of recording this, I was just coming down from the whirl of regenerative possibilities explored in the Integrales Forum panel, "Becoming the Planetary", where Lent and others talked about framing a new narrative around a "regenerative turn." Part of this turn, however, means important breaks from traditional narratives in Western culture concerning evolutionism and progressive societal development. Lent's book articulates this regenerative narrative wonderfully, and I had to agree with Tyson Yunkaporta's blurb: "This book is a good place to sit for anybody interested in binding the wounds of thoughtless progress and allowing for the emergence of new patterns of being." I was also delighted to share some of my thoughts on the interrelationship with Lent's writing and my own research with Jean Gebser. We discussed the convergence points across the conversation. Thanks for listening, and stay tuned with me: Mutations has a back log now, and as I continue to work on my next book, more conversations should be going up over the next few months. Philosopher, pro-activist and author Jeremy Lent joins Terry in a deep and vulnerable exploration of where we are right now as a species, the underlying nature of our ecological and civilizational crises and how we frame our work to catalyze emerging potential for a rapid collective transformation toward a sustainable future. They consider how a greater understanding of the interconnectedness and wholeness of life — both its evolutionary history and the always-active physical, biological, noetic and cultural patterns animating our reality — can inspire us into a new level of devotion to life itself, and its flourishing. They then explore how such devotion involves trusting and treasuring the difficult passages of our lives — personally and collectively. In fact, Jeremy points out that he's come to treasure them especially — as they often become the gateways of transformation and new possibility. Here are some of the questions that Jeremy and Terry explore in the episode: What are the differences between “deep adaptation” and “deep transformation”, and what role could each play in responding to our ecological crisis? How can we “trust, let go, and welcome each moment as a sacred treasure, especially the difficult ones?” How can we practice identifying with the flourishing of Life — with the processes and potentials animating all forms — and be catalyzed by Life's evolutionary will to live? How does the practice of “beginner's mind” benefit our collective project of re-envisioning culture and systems — and how can we practice it in our own lives? What kinds of relationships, communications, and social experiments can enable us, and many millions of others, to become more firmly grounded in our inherent love of life? Jeremy Lent is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization's existential crisis, and explores pathways toward a life-affirming culture. His award-winning book, The Patterning Instinct, traced the patterns of thought and deep historical foundations that have led human civilization to the current dominant worldviews and crises of sustainability. Now his new book, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe, offers a very rich and solid foundation for an integrative worldview that could be the basis for a sustainable, flourishing future. Jeremy Lent returns to The Commonwealth Club to discuss the ideas in his new book, which weaves together the latest scientific findings with age-old philosophical insights to show how some of our most ingrained beliefs about human nature and the world are mistaken. Who am I? Why am I? How should I live? These are some of the oldest questions humans have grappled with. Our modern, high-tech society, having grown up in Darwins' shadow, assumes that humans are hardwired for selfishness, that we are separate from nature and so can exploit it, that we do best when left alone to pursue our own individual goals. Lent argues that the latest scientific research begs to differ, and that those ingrained but faulty beliefs—which got started in the 17th century and have since been updated with ideas like the “selfish gene”—underlie the environmental and social unraveling now threatening our very survival. Lent not only challenges outmoded beliefs, he also invites us to consider a new way of thinking about ourselves and the world that is both intellectually sound and spiritually vibrant. He weaves together the latest research in neuroscience and evolutionary biology with Buddhist, Taoist, and Indigenous wisdom, and shows how these seemingly disparate streams of thought are not only eminently compatible, but are the key to facing the existential problems of the 21st century. Produced by KSQD90.7FM “The Web of Meaning” on "Be Bold America!" April 15, 2021 Who am I? Why am I? How should I live? These are some of the oldest questions humans have grappled with. In our modern, high-tech society we may seem to have the answers. After all, hasn't science shown that humans are hardwired for selfishness? That we are separate from nature (which is ours to exploit)? That we do best when left alone to pursue our own individual goals? In his new book, “The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe,” award-winning author Jeremy Lent answers with a resounding “no”—not because he doesn't like these conclusions, but because the latest science shows them to be false. This groundbreaking new book weaves together the latest scientific findings and age-old philosophical insights to show how some of our most ingrained beliefs about human nature and the world are mistaken—and offers a powerful alternative to help us heal a planet in peril. Jeremy Lent is an author and speaker whose work investigates the underlying causes of our civilization's existential crisis and explores pathways toward a life-affirming future. He is the Founder of the Liology Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering an integrated worldview that could enable humanity to thrive sustainably on the Earth. He addresses the question of “What Could Possibly Go Right?” with thoughts including:The increasing recognition of our shared humanity and connection, “even in the face of the forces of separation that are potentially driving us to destruction”.The potential of the Internet to shift human consciousness and provide “massive epic possibilities that we haven't even begun to even conceptualize”. The fear underpinning polarization and the reminder that white supremacy “doesn't just oppress the people who are not white as a result, but oppresses the white people who think that they're maintaining their privilege... (who) have to always stay on the defensive and tired and worried about losing, rather than actually sharing a space with others, where it's not a zero sum game.” The analogy of unraveling the tightly woven rug of our society and structures, to reweave into a better, resilient pattern of meaning. The benefits of a “shift away from a growth-oriented wealth-accumulating world” to “an ecological civilization... founded on connectivity, on the power of symbiosis between humans and non-human nature.”ResourcesThe Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning by Jeremy Lent: https://www.jeremylent.com/the-patterning-instinct.htmlThe Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe by Jeremy Lent: https://www.jeremylent.com/the-web-of-meaning.htmlConnect with Jeremy LentWebsite: www.jeremylent.com Facebook: facebook.com/JeremyRLent Twitter: twitter.com/JeremyRLent Follow WCPGR on Social MediaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WhatCouldPossiblyGoRightPodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/buildresilienceInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/buildresilienceLearn more: https://bit.ly/wcpgr-resSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/vickirobin)
Jeremy Lent, author and self-described "integrator," has spent years exploring the "cognitive history of humanity" as expressed in diverse civilizations. Lent continues this investigation with a new book 'The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe," which can be succinctly summarized: "Our mainstream worldview has expired. What will replace it? A world of deep interconnectedness."
Jeremy Lent's new book, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe offers a coherent worldview of deep interconnectedness by integrating ancient Taoist and Buddhist views of humanness and awakening, with a modern scientific, conceptually-oriented view of human capacity. Jeremy makes the case for reigniting lost ethical values that can shift the disconnection that has led humanity to the brink of ecological and societal destruction. We discuss deep intelligence, wise action, how to expand collective concern to include all humans, our animal and plant brothers and sisters, and our planet. Our practical and philosophical dialogue moved me at the core of my being. May it be an inspiration for shift in all who hear it! The US edition is available mid-July but you can get the UK edition now. Visit the book website. Produced by KSQD90.7FM Listener Testimonial: Oh WOW Jill, Jeremy Lent's on your show? Even without its being Lent, the "Five Conspiracies" program sounds, like all your shows, illuminating and provocative. But Lent -- oh my! I'm a big fan of his The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning (2017) is epic in scope. he world is awash in a deluge of dangerous conspiracy theories. One of the most harmful results of these bogus conspiracy theories is that they help deflect people's attention from the real conspiracies that are systematically damaging billions of people around the world, destroying the living Earth, and—if left unchecked—may drive our entire civilization to collapse. Jeremy Lent will explain and analyze 5 real and damaging conspiracies that we all should know about such as: 1) Conspiracy to turn the world into a giant marketplace for the benefit of the wealthy elite, 2) Conspiracy by transnational corporations to turn billions of people into addicts, 3) Conspiracy to plunder the Global South for the benefit of the Global North, 4) Conspiracy to hide the effects of climate breakdown for corporate profit, and 5) Conspiracy to grow the global economy indefinitely, while killing most of life on Earth and risking the collapse of civilization. Interview Guest: Jeremy Lent is an author whose writings investigate the patterns of thought that have led our civilization to its current existential crisis. Produced at KSQD 90.7FM “Our worldview is the set of assumptions we hold about how things work: how society functions, its relationship with the natural world, what's valuable and what's possible. It often remains unquestioned and unstated but is deeply felt and underlies many of the choices we make in our lives.” – Jeremy Lent What shaky foundations could our democratic republic currently be built upon? Do our House and Senate representatives believe “humans are fundamentally selfish” and, therefore, make legislative and funding decisions based on that assumption? Maybe that thinking creates a structural flaw and a new foundation from which to make decisions could be that “humans are fundamentally cooperative?” Could the current Administration be implementing another structural flaw by making policy based on the thinking that “humans are separate from nature?” This flaw seems to be clearly demonstrated by the selling off federal land to oil drilling and by rolling back clean air and water requirements? What federal policy decisions could be made if decision makers based policy on thinking that “humans are an integral part of nature?” These questions and more will be discussed with Jeremy Lent, author of The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Future, based on a simple but compelling theme – culture shapes values and those values shape history. So, how do those shaped values contribute to the culture wars fiercely debated and manipulated in America today?
